For a prime ℓ and an abelian variety A over a global field K, the ℓ-parity conjecture predicts that, in accordance with the ideas of Birch and Swinnerton–Dyer, the ℤℓ-corank of the ℓ∞-Selmer group and the analytic rank agree modulo 2. Assuming that char K > 0, we prove that the ℓ-parity conjecture holds for the base change of A to the constant quadratic extension if ℓ is odd, coprime to char K, and does not divide the degree of every polarisation of A. The techniques involved in the proof include the étale cohomological interpretation of Selmer groups, the Grothendieck–Ogg–Shafarevich formula and the study of the behavior of local root numbers in unramified extensions.

Let Σg be a compact, connected, orientable surface of genus g ≥ 2. We ask for a parametrisation of the discrete, faithful, totally loxodromic representations in the deformation space Hom(π1(Σg), SU(3, 1))/SU(3, 1). We show that such a representation, under some hypothesis, can be determined by 30g − 30 real parameters.

We study character varieties of symmetric knots and their reductions mod p. We observe that the varieties present a different behaviour according to whether the knots admit a free or periodic symmetry.

We establish that any subset of ℝd of positive upper Banach density necessarily contains an isometric copy of all sufficiently large dilates of any fixed two-dimensional rectangle provided d ⩾ 4.

We further present an extension of this result to configurations that are the product of two non-degenerate simplices; specifically we show that if Δk1 and Δk2 are two fixed non-degenerate simplices of k1 + 1 and k2 + 1 points respectively, then any subset of ℝd of positive upper Banach density with d ⩾ k1 + k2 + 6 will necessarily contain an isometric copy of all sufficiently large dilates of Δk1 × Δk2.

A new direct proof of the fact that any subset of ℝd of positive upper Banach density necessarily contains an isometric copy of all sufficiently large dilates of any fixed non-degenerate simplex of k + 1 points provided d ⩾ k + 1, a result originally due to Bourgain, is also presented.

We give a characterisations of toposes which admit a generating set of objects which are internally cardinal finite (i.e. Kuratowski finite and decidable) in terms of “topological” conditions. The central result is that, constructively, a hyperconnected separated locally decidable topos admit a generating set of cardinal finite objects. The main theorem is then a generalisation obtained as an application of this result internally in the localic reflection of an arbitrary topos: a topos is generated by cardinal finite objects if and only if it is separated, locally decidable, and its localic reflection is zero dimensional.

We construct graph selectors for compact exact Lagrangians in the cotangent bundle of an orientable, closed manifold. The construction combines Lagrangian spectral invariants, developed by Oh, and results, by Abouzaid, about the Fukaya category of a cotangent bundle. We also introduce the notion of Lipschitz-exact Lagrangians and prove that these admit an appropriate generalisation of graph selector. We then, following Bernard–Oliveira dos Santos, use these results to give a new characterisation of the Aubry and Mañé sets of a Tonelli Hamiltonian and to generalise a result of Arnaud on Lagrangians invariant under the flow of such Hamiltonians.

The zeta function of a curve C over a finite field may be expressed in terms of the characteristic polynomial of a unitary matrix ΘC. We develop and present a new technique to compute the expected value of tr(ΘCn) for various moduli spaces of curves of genus g over a fixed finite field in the limit as g is large, generalising and extending the work of Rudnick [Rud10] and Chinis [Chi16]. This is achieved by using function field zeta functions, explicit formulae, and the densities of prime polynomials with prescribed ramification types at certain places as given in [BDF+16] and [Zha]. We extend [BDF+16] by describing explicit dependence on the place and give an explicit proof of the Lindelöf bound for function field Dirichlet L-functions L(1/2 + it, χ). As applications, we compute the one-level density for hyperelliptic curves, cyclic ℓ-covers, and cubic non-Galois covers.

The initial value problems for some semilinear wave and heat equations are investigated in two space dimensions. By proving the existence of ground state, strong instability of standing waves for the associated wave and heat equations are obtained.

Various types of local zeta functions studied in asymptotic group theory admit two natural operations: (1) change the prime and (2) perform local base extensions. Often, the effects of both of the preceding operations can be expressed simultaneously in terms of a single formula, a statement made precise using what we call local maps of Denef type. We show that assuming the existence of such formulae, the behaviour of local zeta functions under variation of the prime in a set of density 1 in fact completely determines these functions for almost all primes and, moreover, it also determines their behaviour under local base extensions. We discuss applications to topological zeta functions, functional equations, and questions of uniformity.

We give general estimates for the approximation numbers of composition operators on the Hardy space on the ball Bd and the polydisk ${\mathbb D}$d and of composition operators on the Bergman space on the polydisk.

Let f be an entire transcendental function of finite order and Δ be a forward invariant bounded Siegel disk for f with rotation number in Herman's class $\mathcal{H}$. We show that if f has two singular values with bounded orbit, then the boundary of Δ contains a critical point. We also give a criterion under which the critical point in question is recurrent. We actually prove a more general theorem with less restrictive hypotheses, from which these results follow.

We associate to a group G a series that generalises the cogrowth series of G and is related to a random walk on G. We show that the series is rational if and only if G is finite, generalizing a result of Kouksov [Kou]. We show that when G is finite, the series determines G. There are naturally occurring ideals and varieties that are acted on by Aut(G). We study these and generalize this to the context of S-rings over finite groups. There is an associated representation of Aut(G) and we characterize when this is irreducible.

For any metric space X, the predual of Lip(X) is unique. If X has finite diameter or is complete and convex—in particular, if it is a Banach space—then the predual of Lip0(X) is unique.

Magyar has shown that if B ⊂ ℤd has positive upper density (d ⩾ 5), then the set of squared distances {||b1 − b2||2 : b1, b2 ∈ B} contains an infinitely long arithmetic progression, whose period depends only on the upper density of B. We extend this result by showing that B contains locally isometrically embedded copies of every tree with edge lengths in some given arithmetic progression (whose period depends only on the upper density of B and the number of vertices of the sought tree). In particular, B contains all chains of elements with gaps in some given arithmetic progression (which depends on the length of the sought chain). This is a discrete analogue of a result obtained recently by Bennett, Iosevich and Taylor on chains with prescribed gaps in sets of large Haussdorf dimension. Our techniques are Ergodic theoretic and may be of independent interest to Ergodic theorists. In particular, we obtain Ergodic theoretic analogues of recent optimal spherical distribution results of Lyall and Magyar which, via Furstenberg's correspondence principle, recover their combinatorial results.

We study entire functions whose zeros and one-points lie on distinct finite systems of rays. General restrictions on these rays are obtained. Non-trivial examples of entire functions with zeros and one-points on different rays are constructed, using the Stokes phenomenon for second order linear differential equations.

Answering a question of Gowers, Tao proved that any A × B × C ⊂ SLd(𝔽q)3 contains |A||B||C|/|SLd(𝔽q)| + Od(|SLd(𝔽q)|2/qmin(d−1,2)/8) three-term progressions (x, xy, xy2). Using a modification of Tao's argument, we prove such a mixing result for three-term progressions in all nonabelian finite simple groups except for PSL2(𝔽q) with an error term that depends on the degree of quasirandomness of the group. This argument also gives an alternative proof of Tao's result when d > 2, but with the error term O(|SLd(𝔽q)|2/q(d−1)/24).

Let K be an algebraically closed field and $\mathbb{A}$n ≅ Kn affine n-space. It is known that a finite group $\frak{G}$ can only act freely on $\mathbb{A}$n if K has characteristic p > 0 and $\frak{G}$ is a p-group. In that case the group action is “non-linear” and the ring of regular functions K[$\mathbb{A}$n] must be a trace-surjectiveK − $\frak{G}$-algebra.

Now let k be an arbitrary field of characteristic p > 0 and let G be a finite p-group. In this paper we study the category $\mathfrak{Ts}$ of all finitely generated trace-surjective k − G algebras. It has been shown in [13] that the objects in $\mathfrak{Ts}$ are precisely those finitely generated k − G algebras A such that AG ≤ A is a Galois-extension in the sense of [7], with faithful action of G on A. Although $\mathfrak{Ts}$ is not an abelian category it has “s-projective objects”, which are analogues of projective modules, and it has (s-projective) categorical generators, which we will describe explicitly. We will show that s-projective objects and their rings of invariants are retracts of polynomial rings and therefore regular UFDs. The category $\mathfrak{Ts}$ also has “weakly initial objects”, which are closely related to the essential dimension of G over k. Our results yield a geometric structure theorem for free actions of finite p-groups on affine k-varieties. There are also close connections to open questions on retracts of polynomial rings, to embedding problems in standard modular Galois-theory of p-groups and, potentially, to a new constructive approach to homogeneous invariant theory.

We obtained a “decomposition scheme” of C*-algebras. We show that the classes of discrete C*-algebras (as defined by Peligard and Zsidó), type II C*-algebras and type III C*-algebras (both defined by Cuntz and Pedersen) form a good framework to “classify” C*-algebras. In particular, we found that these classes are closed under strong Morita equivalence, hereditary C*-subalgebras as well as taking “essential extension” and “normal quotient”. Furthermore, there exist the largest discrete finite ideal Ad,1, the largest discrete essentially infinite ideal Ad,∞, the largest type II finite ideal AII,1, the largest type II essentially infinite ideal AII,∞, and the largest type III ideal AIII of any C*-algebra A such that Ad,1 + Ad,∞ + AII,1 + AII,∞ + AIII is an essential ideal of A. This “decomposition” extends the corresponding one for W*-algebras.

We also give a closer look at C*-algebras with Hausdorff primitive ideal spaces, AW*-algebras as well as local multiplier algebras of C*-algebras. We find that these algebras can be decomposed into continuous fields of prime C*-algebras over a locally compact Hausdorff space, with each fiber being non-zero and of one of the five types mentioned above.

For a C*-algebra A and a set X we give a Stinespring-type characterisation of the completely positive Schur A-multipliers on κ(ℓ2(X)) ⊗ A. We then relate them to completely positive Herz–Schur multipliers on C*-algebraic crossed products of the form A ⋊α,rG, with G a discrete group, whose various versions were considered earlier by Anantharaman-Delaroche, Bédos and Conti, and Dong and Ruan. The latter maps are shown to implement approximation properties, such as nuclearity or the Haagerup property, for A ⋊α,rG.

We give presentations of the asymptotic expansions of the Kashaev invariant of the knots with 6 crossings. In particular, we show the volume conjecture for these knots, which states that the leading terms of the expansions present the hyperbolic volume and the Chern--Simons invariant of the complements of the knots. As higher coefficients of the expansions, we obtain a new series of invariants of these knots.

A non-trivial part of the proof is to apply the saddle point method to calculate the asymptotic expansion of an integral which presents the Kashaev invariant. A key step of this part is to give a concrete homotopy of the (real 3-dimensional) domain of the integral in ℂ3 in such a way that the boundary of the domain always stays in a certain domain in ℂ3 given by the potential function of the hyperbolic structure.
