The present paper is concerned with particular cases, obtained by suitably restricting the spaces involved, of the following general problem.

Given a topological space X, we ask whether there exist integers n ≥ 2 and non-contractible spaces X1, …, Xn such that X has the homotopy type of the Cartesian product X1, × … × Xn or of the union X1, v … v Xn.

Let G be a locally finite connected graph and c be a positive real-valued function defined on its edges. Let D(ξ) denote the sum of the values of c on the edges incident with a vertex ξ. A particle starts at some vertex α and performs an infinite random walk

in which (i) the ξj are vertices of G, (ii), λj. is an edge joining ξj–1 to ξj (j = 1, 2, 3, …), (iii) if λ is any edge incident with ξj, then

Let υ be a set of vertices of G such that the complementary set of vertices is finite and includes α. A geometrical characterization is given of the probability (τ, say) that the particle will visit some element of υ without first returning to α. An essentially equivalent problem is obtained by regarding G as an electrical network and c(λ) as the conductance of an edge λ; the current flowing through the network from α to υ when an external agency maintains α at potential I and all elements of υ at potential 0 is found to be τD(α).

A necessary and sufficient condition (of a geometrical character) for the particle to be certain to return to α. is obtained; and, as an application, a new proof is given of a conjecture of Gillis (3) regarding centrally biased random walk on an n–dimensional lattice.

1. Introduction. Since the first proofs by Kolmogorov (13) and Smirnov ((14), (15)) of their well-known results on the limit distribution of the deviations of the sample distribution function, many alternative proofs of these results have been given. For example, we may cite the various approaches of Feller (4), Doob (3), Kac (8), Gnedenko and Korolyuk(7), and Anderson and Darling (1). The approaches of (3), (8) and (1) rest on a probabilistic computation regarding the Wiener process, and are justified by the paper of Donsker (2) (see also (11)). Of all these approaches, only those of (8) and (1) can be extended to obtain the limit distributions of the ‘k–sample’ generalizations of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistics suggested in (9), and the author ((9), (10)) and Gihman(6) carried out such proofs.

1. The object of this note is to deduce some self-reciprocal functions and kernels for Hankel transforms. We denote by Rμ the class of functions which are self-reciprocal for Hankel transforms of order μ; that is, those that satisfy

where Jμ(x) is a Bessel function of order μ. In particular we write R8 for R½ and Rc for R−½.

It is our purpose in this paper to present concise proofs of four theorems which take up the greater part of a paper due to Brudno (1). The proofs of Theorems 1 and 2 have appeared already ((2), (3)), but we present them again so that comparisons can be made with the other two.

Quantum mechanics is formulated in terms of the sequences introduced in earlier papers of the series. This reformulation resolves some difficulties in the foundations of quantum theory and gives a new picture of an elementary particle.

1. Introductory discussion and summary. Consider a sequence {ui} of independent real or complex-valued random variables such that E(ui) = 1, and a sequence of mutually exclusive events S1, S2,…, such that Si depends only on u1, u2, …,ui, with ΣP(Sj) = 1. Define the random variable n = n(u1, u2,…) = m when Sm occurs. We shall obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions under which

referred to as the product theorem.

A new and exact solution is given for the diffraction of the field of an electric line current by an imperfectly conducting wedge of exterior angle . Previous attempts at solving this problem assumed that the solution could be expressed as a series in inverse powers of the conductivity of the wedge, but this approach can only be applied to wedges of exterior angle less than π as the solution obtained is singular at the edge of the wedge for angles exceeding π. It is shown that in the present case no such expansion is uniformly valid; at large distances from the wedge, however, the present solution agrees with that obtained by assuming an expansion in inverse powers of the conductivity, even though this latter solution is singular at the edge, to order (conductivity of the wedge)−1; the next term in the expansion of the present exact solution is O(conductivity). The case of an incident plane wave may be obtained by letting the source tend to infinity.

The Wigner 6j–symbol, written in the form

is shown to be invariant under separate permutations of A, B, C alone, separate permutations of α, β, γ alone and separate change in sign of any pair of α, β, γ; results equivalent to the new symmetry relations of Regge. Alternatively, written in the form

with J0 + J1 + J2 + J3 = K1 + K2 + K3, Jr(r = 0, 1, 2, 3) and K3 (s = 1, 2, 3) integral, it is invariant for separate permutations of the Jr and of the Ks. If Jm = max (J0, J1, J2, J3), then each 6j-symbol with distinct value may be associated with an ordered partition of Jm into 6 integral parts: Jm = n1 + n2 + n3 + p1 + p2 + p3, n1 ≥ n2 ≥ n3; p1 ≥ p2 ≥ n3. The 6j-symbol is proportional to the Saalschützian

of unit argument.

Some years ago M. Jackson(5) obtained the sum of a particular 3H3 series which generalized the theorems of Whipple and Watson on sums of a 3F2 series, and later she(6) deduced the sum of a particular well-poised 6H6( – 1) series. In this note sums of certain particular bilateral hypergeometric series of the same type are given. They are believed to be new. In the sequel, the sum of a particular 8Ψ8 series has been obtained. The existence of a particular case of this sum was pointed out earlier by Slater and Lakin (11).

It is well known that there is no static axisymmetric two-body solution of Einstein's gravitational field equations, if it is assumed that the bodies are separated in a certain definite sense. In this paper it is shown, by the construction of a complete physically sensible model, that static two-body solutions do exist for systems in which one body is hollow and contains the other. The stability of the particular system described is briefly discussed.

1. Introduction. The subject of this paper is the propagation of small disturbances in a compressible fluid which is also a conductor of electricity, in the presence of a magnetic field. The characteristic feature of the problem is that it combines sound waves and magneto-hydrodynamic waves. The theory is based on linearized equations which generalize the equations of motion of the theory of sound. The disturbances with which it deals might therefore be called magneto-acoustic waves. Energy dissipation by viscosity, heat conduction and Joule heat is neglected, and so is the displacement current. Even so, a hyperbolic system of seven partial differential equations of the first order is obtained, whose solution requires analysis of considerable complexity.

A recent investigation of the interaction between the Maxwell radiation field and neutral atoms or molecules has led us to consider the relation between the straightforward interaction Hamiltonian

between particle (k) and the radiation field, and the more physical, and explicitly gauge invariant, couplings of the form q. E and µ. H, etc., where q and µ are the electric and magnetic dipole moments of a system of particles. That these latter form of interaction energies follow from well-formulated approximations for atoms in external fields has been known for many years (Goeppert-Mayer(1); see also Rosenfeld(2)). When the Maxwell field is an internal and dynamical field further discussion is necessary, especially concerning the Coulomb interactions. Their advantage has recently been shown in dealing with dipole interactions in the long range Van der Waals force between two neutral systems where the complete coupling, in dipole approximation, is given by — q.ET for each neutral system, where ET is the transverse electric field. The short-range London limit is contained in this coupling despite the absence of longitudinal electric fields (Power and Zienau (3)). In this note we extend these arguments to higher electric multipoles and magnetic multipoles. We also demonstrate their use in the quantum theory of scattering of light, and in particular the derivations of Stephen (4) of the phase angle between emergent beams in optical double refraction phenomena are shown to follow immediately.

There is perhaps some methodological interest in developing the theory of quadratic forms over the rational field using only the methods of elementary arithmetic. Hitherto it has appeared necessary to use theorems of a fairly deep nature, most often Dirichlet's theorem about the existence of primes in arithmetic progressions (e.g. Minkowski(1), Hasse(2), Dickson(8), Skolem(9), Burton Jones(6)). Skolem(5) uses a weaker form of Dirichlet's theorem which is rather easier to prove and Siegel(4) uses instead the machinery of the Hardy-Littlewood circle method. In this note I indicate how it is possible to develop the theory of quadratic forms over the rationals without using extraneous resources. Pall(10) states that he has also found such a development of the theory but he does not appear to have published it.

The following result has recently been proved by Lewis (3), Davenport (2) and Birch (1).

There exists an integer n0 such that every cubic form with rational coefficients and at least n0 integral variables represents zero non-trivially.

The arguments of Lewis and Birch are simple, and yield also various generalizations of this result. Davenport's proof is complicated, but it shows that the minimal n0 satisfies

It has been shown recently that a fruitful method of studying the formation of waves on the sea surface is through the average intensity of reflected sunlight, as seen from different angles ((3), (4)). This gives, in effect, the statistical distribution of the components of surface slope.

Following the same line of thought, we may inquire what information could be derived from the distribution of the sizes of the reflected images of the sun. The size of an image depends essentially on the total curvature of the surface at the point of reflexion (see § 2).
