The family Thorectidae includes 23 valid genera and 130 species, characterized by the presence of laminated fibres and diplodal choanocytye chambers. Currently the genus Thorecta comprises approximately 20 valid species, distributed mainly in the Indo-Pacific. We describe here a new species of Thorecta that is the only valid species of the genus described in the Atlantic Ocean so far. Samples were collected by trawling on board of the RV ‘Astro Garoupa’ in Potiguar Basin, on the northern coast of Rio Grande do Norte State, north-eastern Brazil. Thorecta atlantica sp. nov. is greyish-brown to dark brownish-grey and presents a distinctive globular or clavulate shape, with 1–2 large apical oscules that open to deep atria. It was found between 61 and 160 m depth. A literature survey suggests that many species referred to Thorecta should be relocated to different genera due to absence of diagnostic characters, and that the genus Thorecta should group only 11 species: T. carteri, T. marginalis, T. prima, T. lata, T. farlovi, T. meandrina, T. polygona, T. reticulata, T. tuberculata, T. vasiformis and T. atlantica sp. nov. The tortuous history of the genus is an example of the damage that poorly-described species can cause to classification. Detailed descriptions of fresh material, well illustrated by photographs and including as many characters as possible, are essential tools for the clarification of the systematics of Thorecta in the future.

Diel rhythms in feeding and spawning were investigated in Centropages tenuiremis from Xiamen Bay in March to May, 2006. Circular statistics were used to determine the peak time of spawning. The results showed that the feeding activities of females were stably higher at night-time, and there was a remarkable earlier shift in spawning peak time with warmer seawater. Thus, the lag times between peak times of gut pigment content and spawning were shortened with the increase of temperature. It suggested that there was a direct effect of feeding rhythms on egg production variations in copepods, and the seawater temperature would work on the converting time and then influence the spawning peak time. So the effect of temperature cannot be ignored in the investigation of the effects of feeding on egg production.

There was a time, and that not many years ago, when the fishing-hoats of Brixham sailed round to the east coast of England and joined with the fleets of London, Lowestoft, Yarmouth, and Grimsby in exploiting the fishing-grounds of the North Sea. This carries us back at least two generations, but if one chose to hunt through old records, one might find mention of Brixham and its fishing many centuries ago. The records may even go back to an earlier date than the Armada, but its past history, though of exceptional interest, is of no importance to our present purpose, and we may turn to the doings of the men of Brixham at the present day.

Saroma-ko Lagoon, the largest body of water that has complete ice coverage during winter in Japan, was not completely covered by ice in the winter of 2009. This condition is considered to be a result of the progression of global warming. A bloom of large diatoms was observed in the ice-free area between February and April. This early spring bloom seemed to have started in the latter part of January, and lasted for about three months. The maximum chlorophyll-a (Chl a) concentration of about 10 mg m−3 was observed in March, and was similar to the level of 5–20 mg m−3 previously reported for the ordinary spring bloom in Saroma-ko Lagoon. The maximum primary production of 786 mgC m−2 day−1 and the maximum Chl a-specific primary production, an index of the phytoplankton growth rate, were also found in March. Species changes from Thalassiosira spp. to Chaetoceros spp. were observed during the bloom. This early spring bloom could extend into the ordinary spring bloom period. Its duration was obviously longer than that of the spring bloom, which is typically about one month. These results show the phytoplankton condition that could be expected during winter and spring as global warming progresses.

A new species of Cerapopsis (Cerapopsis takamado) is described from the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The genus Cerapopsis, synonymized with Photis Kröyer for nearly a quarter of a century is re-established and now known to contain two species.

Benthic communities, critical to the health and function of marine ecosystems, are under increasing pressure from anthropogenic impacts such as pollution, eutrophication and climate change. In order to refine predictions of likely future changes in benthic communities resulting from these impacts, we must first better constrain their responses to natural seasonality in environmental conditions. Epibenthic time series data (July 2008–May 2014) have been collected from Station L4, situated 7.25 nautical miles south of Plymouth in the Western English Channel. These data were analysed to establish patterns in community abundance, wet biomass and composition, and to link any observed patterns to environmental variables. A clear response to the input of organic material from phytoplankton blooms was detected, with sediment surface living deposit feeders showing an immediate increase in abundance, while predators and scavengers responded later, with an increase in biomass. We suggest that this response is a result of two factors. The low organic content of the L4 sediment results in food limitation of the community, and the mild winter/early spring bottom water temperatures allow the benthos to take immediate advantage of bloom sedimentation. An inter-annual change in community composition was also detected, as the community shifted from one dominated by the anomuran Anapagurus laevis to one dominated by the gastropod Turitella communis. This appeared to be related to a period of high larval recruitment for T. communis in 2013/2014, suggesting that changes in the recruitment success of one species can affect the structure of an entire community.

The aim of this study is to determine the phytoplankton species found on the shores of Burgaz Island and the basic ecological variables that affect their seasonal distribution between May 2013 and February 2014. Water samples were collected from four stations at six different depths and plankton samples were gathered horizontally and vertically. The analysis of phytoplankton community composition revealed 101 phytoplankton taxa belonging to five classes. As a result of the study, two taxa belonging to the Dinophyceae (Corythodinium frenguellii and Gonyaulax scrippsae) were new records for Turkish coastal waters. Additionally, a taxon belonging to Dinophyceae (Pronoctiluca pelagica) and a taxon belonging to Bacillariophyceae (Nitzschia reversa) were new records for the Sea of Marmara. Prorocentrum micans, was the dominant species throughout all sampling periods. During the study, the highest phytoplankton abundance was observed at 0.5 m depth in May 2013 (138,500 cells l−1) and February 2014 (52,620 cells l−1). Primary ecological variables, such as temperature (9.0–21.5 °C), salinity (15.23–37.22‰) and dissolved oxygen (4.89–15.84 mg l−1), were recorded on each sampling occasion. In addition, nitrite + nitrate–N (NO2 + NO3–N) (0.01–7.37 μg-at N l−1), phosphate (PO4–P) (0.05–51.95 μg-at P l−1) and silicate (SiO4–Si) (0.01–0.20 μg-at Si l−1) concentrations were measured. Chlorophyll a and suspended material values ranged between 0.01–3.17 μg l−1 and 10.0–61.5 mg l−1, respectively. Spearman's rank correlation was used to determine the relationship between phytoplankton species and ecological variables, and Bray–Curtis analysis and Euclidean distance were applied to bring out the similarity between stations.

During recent cruises of R.R.S. ‘Discovery’ in the eastern North Atlantic an investigation has been made of the depth distribution and diurnal migration of the pelagic fauna in selected oceanic areas. This continuing programme has entailed intensive mid-water sampling with opening-closing nets, fishing discrete depth horizons mainly within the upper 1000 m but also on occasion at greater depths. Hauls made during the cruise of January-April 1968 in a position 11°N, 20°W, south-east of the Cape Verde Islands, yielded 43 specimens of an apparently new species of the genus Acanthephyra. A further 113 specimens were taken during a subsequent cruise to the same area and the species has also been recorded in a sample collected in the Indian Ocean during the International Indian Ocean Expedition.

Having examined the literature and concluded that the species was undescribed the author referred to the large collection of decapod Crustacea that had been amassed as a result of cruises of ships of the Discovery Committee made prior to 1939. This material, together with that taken on the Dana Expeditions, had formed the subject of Dr Stanley W. Kemp's extensive studies on the Oplophoridae (Kemp, 1939), consequently the carefully preserved, labelled, and identified specimens represent a unique reference collection. It proved to contain five specimens identical to those taken at 11°N in 1968. Not unexpectedly Kemp had realized their uniqueness and had not only designated the type but named it. A description, however, was never published although it was prepared and has in part survived.

The swimming and buoyancy of the gelatinous pteropod, Cymbulia peroni, was observed and recorded on videotape from a submersible in the western Mediterranean. When not swimming Cymbulia peroni hangs neutrally buoyant, with its parapodia outstretched and motionless. Two modes of swimming were observed, slow swimming and rapid or ‘escape’ swimming. Slow swimming predominated, at speeds between 2 and 11 cm s−1. Most slow swimming was directed vertically up or down. Slow swimming is probably used for vertical migration and the avoidance of turbulence. Turbulence frequently occurs both at epipelagic and mesopelagic depths in the Mediterranean. Escape swimming was more rapid, and speeds up to 40 cm s−1 were measured. Differences between slow and escape swimming appear to be quantitative rather than qualitative, in contrast to other cymbuliids. Cymbulia peroni is an active and vigorous swimmer, clearly capable of vertical migration, and probably attains speeds greater than the highest measured in this study. Its behaviour in the field differs dramatically from its behaviour in the laboratory.

Mitochondrial dehydrogenases, antioxidant enzymes, transaminases and cytochrome P450 activity have been studied from the digestive gland of Mytilus galloprovincialis, reared in a non-polluted area of the Mar Grande of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Mediterranean).

The spawning period of the nudibranch mollusc Onchidoris bilamellata (L.), although generally extending from December to May, has occasionally been reported to occur also in summer and early autumn. Preliminary data are presented here on the larval development of summer and early autumn spawnings and compared to previous studies of the larval development of ‘normal’ (winter-spring) spawnings. The possible causes and consequences of the rare summer and early autumn spawnings are discussed.

The nudibranch mollusc Onchidoris bilamellata is distributed around the British Isles, the Atlantic coast of France, Iceland, Greenland, and the coasts of North America and Japan (Thompson & Brown, 1976). It exhibits an annual life cycle with a single spawning season, generally extending from December to May in which the adults spawn repeatedly. At the end of May/June the post-spawning mortality of the adults is usually complete (Todd, 1979). Summer and early autumn spawnings have been recorded in intertidal populations only occasionally (Todd, 1979 and references therein; present study). Larval development has been studied previously on larvae hatching from eggs laid during the ‘normal’ spawning season. No information is available on the larval growth and development of summer and early autumn spawnings. In the present study two key points were addressed: the occurrence of individuals and spawn masses in the field throughout the year; and the identification of any distinctive traits of the July and September offspring.

The field observations were carried out on the south-eastern coast of Scotland (56°18′N 2°39′W) from July 1993 to August 1994. The surface sea-water temperatures were recorded from January 1993 to August 1994 in St Andrews (56°20′N 2°47′W), seven miles from the location under study (Figure 1).

During high-tide, the majority of Gobius cobitis exhibit a microhabitat shift, moving up to the mid-intertidal walls and cliffs, a typical blenniid habitat that is not used by this species during low-tide. Observations on feeding behaviour that showed that fish behave as an ambush predator, being capable of hunting fish of considerable size, combined with its movements to typical blenniid habitats, suggest that this species may have a predatory role as a fish predator on the rock intertidal.

Accurate discrimination of two morphologically similar species of Patella limpets has been facilitated by using qPCR amplification of species-specific mitochondrial genomic regions. Cost-effective and non-destructive sampling is achieved using a mucus swab and simple sample lysis and dilution to create a PCR template. Results show 100% concurrence with dissection and microscopic analysis, and the technique has been employed successfully in field studies. The use of highly sensitive DNA barcoding techniques such as this hold great potential for improving previously challenging field assessments of species abundance.

The Council of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom has determined to issue to its members notes and reports concerning the work of the Association in the form of a Journal, which will appear at intervals, determined by the amount of material ready for publication. It is not proposed to limit the contents of this Journal to formal reports, nor to publish in it lengthy scientific memoirs, but to include within its pages, besides the official statements of the Council, brief records of observations relating to the marine biology and fisheries of the coasts of the United Kingdom which may appear to have a definite bearing upon the work actually in progress under the auspices of the Association. With this object in view the Council of the Association invite communications from fishermen and naturalists, which may either be printed in full in this Journal or form the subject of a note.

Sponges together with associated bacteria form complex holobionts governed by various relationships established between the partners. Molecules of communication may participate in the homeostasis of these biological associations. Bacteria produce N-acyl homoserine lactones to communicate. In the present study, we characterized 102 cultivable bacteria isolated from the sponge Suberites domuncula at the genus level and described their production of AHLs during 96 h of culture in a Marine Broth medium. The presence of AHLs was monitored using the Escherichia coli pSB406 reporter strain. Sixty-seven bacteria were AHLs positive. Among them, 46 were related to the Gammaproteobacteria, eight to the Alphaproteobacteria, seven to the Firmicutes and six to the Flavobacteria. The kinetic production of AHLs was determined and compared with a reference bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 (pDA224). We established three profiles of AHLs production with no definitive pattern related to an order, a family or a genus of bacteria.
