During the austral spring (December 1996), numerical abundance of copepod species (Crustacea: Copepoda) was estimated from 53 sampling stations scattered over the coastal waters off Mejillones Peninsula, northern Chile. Samples were obtained from two depth strata; 0-50 m and 50-200 m depth. Oceanographic data over the three-day cruise indicated that coastal upwelling was actively occurring during the survey.

A total of 19 species was identified, of which four of them, Paracalanus parvus, Oncaea conifera, Oithona similis and Calanus chilensis, accounted for more than 80% of the whole copepod assemblage in terms of numerical abundance. Using the K-means exploratory analysis the 53 locations were grouped into two clusters: an upwelling type and a non-upwelling type. The former characterized by locations nearshore, with low temperature (<17°C) and high chorophyll-a (>13.4 mg m−3), while the latter had warmer waters (>18°C) and low chlorophyll-a (<4.8 mg m−3). Chlorophyll-a (chl-a), distance to shoreline and temperature at 10 m depth (T10) were all significant variables ( P<0.05) for clustering analysis. There was a strong negative correlation between T10 and chl-a ( P<0.01). The same clustering technique, based on species abundance, suggested the presence of a unique cluster, whose composition was dominated by P. parvus, O. similis, Acartia tonsa and Centropages brachiatus. Stepwise multiple regression showed that these species were also strongly correlated to chl-a and T10. Together these analyses suggest that water mass circulation during upwelling is the driving force for structuring spatial patterns of copepod distribution. In addition, a vertical distribution parameter suggested that copepods, independently of time of the day, tended to remain in a large proportion in near surface waters, possibly constrained by a shallow oxygen minimum layer. This implies that advection during active upwelling may cause large fractions of populations being transported offshore, allowing zooplankton export to more oceanic waters. Rapid turnover rates of copepods growing continuously year-round, may act as a mechanism to compensate population losses during persistent coastal upwelling.

The long term effects of macroalgal canopy removal on community composition were investigated over a 12 year period. Experimental removal of the dominant Ascophyllum nodosum canopy led to short term changes in community composition, the major features of which were still apparent 12 years later. Ascophyllum was slow to recover despite high recruitment, and experimental plots were dominated by Fucus species. After 12 years a mixed assemblage of Fucus serratus, Fucus vesiculosus and Ascophyllum had developed. Canopy removal resulted in a change in the balance between grazing limpets and the cover of red algal turf in the understorey community. The cover of turfing algae declined significantly allowing the area grazed by limpets to extend. This led to a 3–6 fold increase in the limpet population 12 years after canopy removal.

The Crustacea play an important economic role in the marine and aquatic environments not only as a food source but also in the productivity of the fisheries. Exploitation of these resources has led to a need for intensive culture methods which impose physiological stress on the animals and consequently increase the incidence of disease. The need to reduce the lethal and debilitating effects of pathogens has stimulated a renewed interest in the defence mechanisms of the Crustacea.

Diet of common dolphins off the Portuguese coast was studied based on the examination of stomach contents of 50 stranded and incidentally caught animals. The relative importance of each prey species was assessed through occurrence, numerical and biomass indices. Common dolphins preyed on a large variety of items but four fish and two cephalopod species appeared to form the basis of their diet. Overall, sardine (Sardina pilchardus) was the most important prey, as given by all the indices used to measure prey relative importance. Although common dolphins preyed mostly on pelagic species, they seemed able to explore habitats with distinct features and employ various foraging strategies. A comparison between the diet of dolphins of different sex and size groups was not indicative of major differences. Common dolphins incidentally caught in fishing nets had taken a higher proportion of sardines, the target species of the fishery.

Stomach contents and carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stable isotope analysis were used to evaluate trophic relationships of jumbo squid, Dosidicus gigas. Buccal masses, beaks and stomach contents of large and medium maturing-sized jumbo squid and muscle from its main prey, the myctophid Benthosema panamense, were collected in the Gulf of California, Mexico during 1996, 1997 and 1999. Both the quantified C and N-isotope ratios in muscle, and stomach content analysis revealed that larger-sized maturing squid showed a higher trophic position than medium-sized individuals. However, a discrepancy between stomach contents versus stable isotope analyses was found in evaluating trophic relationships. Simple dilution models as a function of growth were used to estimate the C and N renewal dietary shift for jumbo squid. Estimates of the initial C and N pools in D. gigas with an initial age of 70 days and 210 days indicated isotopic shifts of 32% after a threefold biomass increase and 25% after a fourfold biomass increase, respectively. Additionally, beak samples of jumbo squid were evaluated as an alternative tissue to estimate squid trophic position using stable isotopes. The results showed a significant correlation between stable isotope ratios from muscle and beak samples. Muscle isotope values were higher than beak by 1% and 4% for δ13C and δ15N respectively. A test with jumbo squid beaks collected from a stomach of a stranded sperm whale confirmed the viability of this method.

Experiments on yolk utilization were done with developing herring eggs and larvae from races spawning in the Clyde, North Sea, Atlantic and Baltic. The range of mean dry weight of unfertilized eggs varied from o·126 to o·366 mg in the different races.

Solidified adhesive (cement) of three balanid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia) was dissolved using different concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulphate containing a reducing agent. The proteins were separated using SDS-PAGE and blotted onto polyvinylidene difluoride membrane for sequencing. Commonly occurring bands in the cement of each species were identified. One particular protein of 39 kD, found in the cement of Balanus perforatus, has the following N-terminal sequence: TYFPVLSYG?SSSLAPVI, where the? is most likely cysteine. Quinones were not identified in the cement by either infra-red, ultraviolet-visible or solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and the successful dissolution and sequencing of cement proteins mitigates against their presence. Cement contains a mixture of highly hydrophobic proteins which are cross-linked through cysteine residues. It is the combination of these two components which makes cement highly resistant to chemical degradation. As a result bacteria are usually absent from the cement, possibly further excluded from the porous core of the cement by its smooth outer crust.

The use of natural plankton and other foods, and of transfer techniques during phases of mortality before metamorphosis, has made it possible for substantial numbers of herring larvae to be reared beyond this stage, thus supplying requirements for experimental work. A survival to and beyond metamorphosis of over 10% of larvae passing the yolk-sac stage (3–4% of hatched larvae) has been obtained.

The dynamics of clearance, segregation and elimination of a marine bacterium, Moraxella sp., by the shore crab, Carcinus maenas (L.) has been studied utilizing fluorescent and radiolabelling techniques. In addition to the gills, the hepatopancreas was a major site of bacterial accumulation with sequestration occurring within haemocyte clumps and groups of stationary cells in this organ. The heart, excretory organ and subcuticular tissues also incorporated bacteria, but to a lesser extent. By the first day post-injection, many of the segregated micro-organisms had been removed from the organs. This latter process was not due to the exodus of laden haemocytes or of intact cell clumps from the host but seemed to result from lytic action by the host blood cells. Little material arising from such bacterial/haemocytic interaction was, however, immediately excreted, and much was relocated in the general body tissues as well as the gill nephrocytes.

INTRODUCTION

The problems involved in the identification of freeliving marine nematodes have stood in the way of ecologists for some time. Although considerable advances are now being made on the continent (particularly in Kiel Bay and the Mediterranean) and in North America, our lack of knowledge of the British species is still lamentable. In order to rectify this state of affairs to some extent, a study of the distribution of nematodes in the Exe estuary was planned to cover as wide a spectrum of physical and chemical conditions as possible, ranging from fine muds with a low interstitial salinity at the head of the estuary to coarse sands with a high salinity at the mouth. It is hoped that the characterization of the fauna of various habitats in the estuary will form a basis for further ecological studies in other areas. Not surprisingly, a large proportion of the species found were new British records, and some new to science. The fourteen species of this latter group discussed in this paper are described elsewhere (Warwick, 1970).

One of the most obvious effects of eutrophication in sheltered coastal areas and estuaries is enhanced growth of opportunistic macroalgae, which may form extensive mats over intertidal mudflats during the spring and summer. In the Ythan estuary, densities of the amphipod Corophium volutator (Pallas) in the sediment underlying weed mats were significantly lower than those in weed-free sediments, and are dominated by species characteristic of organically enriched, low oxygen environments such as Capitella capitata. Long-term data sets on Corophium abundance in the Ythan suggest that this species has declined dramatically throughout those parts of the estuary affected by weed mats.

1. Experiments have been done to determine the oxygen utilisation by male, female and Stage V Calanus under different environmental conditions.

2. An initial fall in the respiration of adult Calanus was observed during the first few hours after capture. Stage V do not show this clearly. It is found more often in winter than in summer.

3. The lethal temperature varies from 24° C. in winter to 26° C. in summer. Stage V Calanus are more resistant to high temperatures than adults.

4. Respiration rises with increase of temperature from 0° C. to 20° C. The increase does not follow van't Hoff's law. The oxygen consumption of males and females is about the same, while that of Stage V is lower. Above 20° C. there is a harmful effect.

5. Within the limits studied (pH 7.4–pH 8.5) change in hydrogen-ion concentration has no effect on respiration.

6. Calanus are unaffected by an increase in the oxygen content of the water, but are sensitive to low oxygen tensions. Below a concentration of about 3 ml. per litre the respiration decreases. At concentrations between 1 and 2 ml. per litre they are killed. They are more resistant at 5° C. than at 15° C. and Stage V are more resistant than adults at both these temperatures.

7. Calanus can become acclimatised to salinities as low as 35–40% seawater (S=12‰–13.6‰), but their respiration is lowered at a salinity of 50%.

8. Light has a striking effect on Calanus. It may increase the respiration by 100% or more. This effect can be detected also in the sea, but not below 5 metres. Continuous exposure to light is harmful.

9. The bearing of these results on the distribution of Calanus is discussed.

10. From the amount of oxygen used in respiration, calculations of the food required are made and these are compared with the results given by Putter for Calanus and other copepods.

Results from recent biological studies (including three Alvin dives in July 1997) of the southernmost deep-sea hydrothermal area known on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), the Logatchev hydrothermal area, are described. The Logatchev area includes three vent fields, each with a different geological setting corresponding to: (1) a large sulphide mound with ‘smoking craters’; (2) an active chimney complex (known as ‘Irina-2’); and (3) a diffuse flow through soft sediment (‘Anya's Garden’). Hydrothermal communities found at these fields differ considerably: Anya's Garden is dominated by vesicomyid clams, Ectenagena sp. aff. kaikoi, Irina-2 by mytilid mussels, Bathymodiolus sp. aff. puteoserpentis, with swarms of shrimps and other rich associated fauna, whereas on the main mound the fauna as a whole is less abundant and less diverse. This is the first record of a living clam population on the MAR. Other bivalves found on the clam field included thyasirids, Thyasira (Parathyasira) spp., not reported previously from deep-sea hot vent communities. The biomass on the mussel bed at Irina-2 exceeds 70 kg m−2 (wet weight with shells) and is the highest known on the MAR. The large shrimp population at Irina-2 includes swarms of Rimicaris exoculata. A diverse shrimp fauna (including a new species Alvinocaris sp. aff. muricola) on the mussel bed is dominated by Mirocaris keldyshi. Overall the Logatchev area is dominated by mussels which may be attributable to the presence of both methane-oxidizing (dominant type) and sulphur-oxidizing bacterial symbionts in their gills. The diversity of vent organisms and biotopes at Logatchev appears to be the highest on the MAR.

Mats of articulated coralline algal turf are common on many rocky intertidal shores. The dense fronds provide a habitat for extremely diverse and abundant macrofaunal assemblages. Despite a large contribution to faunal biodiversity of rocky shores, little has been published about these assemblages. This study describes patterns of distribution and abundance of macrofauna in coralline turf on rocky shores around Sydney. In addition, the potential of environmental variables (sediment, epiphytes, length and density of coralline fronds) for determining these patterns was also investigated. Relatively consistent differences were found between macrofauna in low- and mid-shore areas at all times of sampling and on all shores. Although there was some variation among shores, there was generally significant variation in macrofauna between sites separated by tens of metres. Generally, a relatively small number of taxa were responsible for the great majority of dissimilarity between assemblages. Apart for the small bivalve Lasaea australis, however, these taxa varied between heights on the shore, among times of sampling and among shores. These data illustrate the important contribution that coralline turf has for biodiversity of faunal assemblages on rocky shores around Sydney. They also provide a basis for investigating biological processes and physical factors responsible for structuring patterns of biodiversity of macrofaunal assemblage in coralline turf.

Sponge communities were sampled at 3 m depth intervals at six sites experiencing different flow regimes at Lough Hyne, Ireland. Sponges were identified and classified within the following morphological groups: encrusting, massive, globular, pedunculate, tubular, flabellate, arborescent, repent and papillate morphological types on both vertical (≈90°) and inclined (≈45°) surfaces.

Differences in the proportional abundance of the sponge body forms and density (sponge m−2) were observed between sites and depths. The density of sponges increased with depth at sites of slight to moderate current flow, but not at the site where current flow was turbulent. Morphological diversity of sponge communities decreased with increasing current flow due to the removal of delicate forms such as pedunculate and arborescent shaped sponges. Massive and encrusting morphologies dominated at the high-energy sites (fast and turbulent flow regimes) due to a high basal area to volume ratio, which prevents removal from cliff surfaces. However, pedunculate, papillate and arborescent types dominated at the low current sites as these shapes may help to prevent the settlement of sediment on sponge surfaces. Bray–Curtis Similarity analysis and Correspondence Analysis were used to distinguish between five different morphological communities.

The bivalve mollusc Scrobicularia plana (da Costa) is very common in the estuaries of South-West England and lives in permanent burrows in intertidal sediments ranging from soft mud to fairly hard sand and sometimes gravel. Although it obtains some of its food by filtering the overlying water, Scrobicularia is mainly a deposit feeder (Hughes, 1969). In addition to its widespread distribution, Scrobicularia has several features which make it attractive as a possible indicator organism for metallic contamination. It is more tolerant of low salinities than most common estuarine bivalves, usually penetrating farther upstream than Macoma balthica, Mytilus edulis and Cerastoderma edule (Percival, 1929; Spooner & Moore, 1940; Bryan & Hummerstone, 1977). Also, it lives for over ten years, usually attaining a length of 4–5 cm, and its rate of growth can be estimated from rings on the shell (Green, 1957; Hughes, 1970).

Humans who eat fish are exposed to mixtures of healthful nutrients and harmful contaminants that are influenced by environmental and ecological factors. Marine fisheries are composed of a multitude of species with varying life histories, and harvested in oceans, coastal waters and estuaries where environmental and ecological conditions determine fish exposure to both nutrients and contaminants. Many of these nutrients and contaminants are thought to influence similar health outcomes (i.e., neurological, cardiovascular, immunological systems). Therefore, our understanding of the risks and benefits of consuming seafood require balanced assessments of contaminants and nutrients found in fish and shellfish. In this paper, we review some of the reported benefits of fish consumption with a focus on the potential hazards of mercury exposure, and compare the environmental variability of fish oils, selenium and mercury in fish. A major scientific gap identified is that fish tissue concentrations are rarely measured for both contaminants and nutrients across a range of species and geographic regions. Interpreting the implications of seafood for human health will require a better understanding of these multiple exposures, particularly as environmental conditions in the oceans change.

1. The brackish-water prawn Palaemonetes varians and the marine prawns Leander serratus and L. squilla are hypotonic in normal sea water, the blood of these species showing osmotic pressures equivalent to 2·3, 2·8 and 2·6 % NaCl respectively, in an external medium of 3·5 % NaCl.

2. Palaemonetes varians is isotonic in water of about 2·0 % NaCl and the species is practically homoiosmotic, the difference in its osmotic pressure over a range of 5·0 % NaCl in the external medium being only 0·8–1·0 %. The species has a very wide range of tolerance from water that is nearly fresh to concentrated sea water equivalent to 5·2 % NaCl.

3. Leander serratus is much less homoiosmotic than Palaemonetes, and has a limited tolerance to dilution and concentration of the environment. Homoiosmoticity is maintained up to a dilution of 2·5 % in the external medium when isotonicity is reached; but in lower dilutions there is a steady decline in osmotic pressure and the regulatory mechanism evidently breaks down.

4. The osmotic behaviour of Leander squilla is very similar to that of L. serratus, but the homoiosmotic behaviour is more marked and it has greater tolerance to dilution of the environment.

5. When Leander and Palaemonetes are transferred to very dilute sea water, the internal osmotic pressure falls gradually for about 14–24 hr., varying according to the size of the individual. After the lowest value has been registered there is a slight rise, and a steady state is thereafter maintained.

6. Studies on the changes of weight of prawns when transferred to diluted media indicate that the integument (gills) is permeable to water and that, at least in Leander serratus, the amount of water entering is mainly responsible for the dilution of the blood. There is a similar fall in weight when prawns are transferred to concentrated media, due to loss of water.

Experiments were carried out to assess the importance of desiccation during tidal exposure upon the vertical distribution of the intertidal limpets Patella aspera and P. vulgat vulgata. The rate at which water is lost during desiccation varies inversely with body size.

The Council of the Marine Biological Association appointed me, in 1889, to make observations on the perceptions of fishes, and especially on those which constitute the modes by which they hunt for and recognise their food. It was suggested that this subject should be treated in as wide a manner as possible, and in accordance with this suggestion I have endeavoured to utilize any opportunities which presented themselves of getting an insight into the natural history of marine animals. In addition to this I have also made some experiments towards the practical solution of the bait question, both by making artificial baits, and by endeavouring to preserve materials which are already in use for bait.
