This work provides information about the fish assemblage structure along the estuarine gradient of Baía da Babitonga, south Brazil. The seasonal and spatial dynamics of fish and their relationship with physical–chemical variables were investigated. A total of 70,085 fish of 70 taxa were collected. Late larva and early juveniles of Engraulidae, Eucinostomus spp. and Mugil spp. dominated in abundance, representing 62% of all fish captured. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance identified distinct fish assemblages within the bay and during the year. The marine straggler species Harengula clupeola, Oligoplites saliens and Trachinotus carolinus and the estuarine migrant Anchoa tricolor were characteristic of the outer-most bay area, while the estuarine resident and migrant species Atherinella brasiliensis, Anchoa januaria, Sphoeroides greeleyi and Citharichthys spilopterus, and the marine migrant Diapterus rhombeus were characteristic of the inner portion of the estuary. The seasonal changes in community structure observed were mainly related to the greater abundance of T. carolinus in the warm/wet season, Micropogonias furnieri in the transition season and Oligoplites saliens in the cold/dry season. Depth, followed by salinity, explained the greater part of the variability in the abundance of dominant species and was found to be important in shaping the assemblages. Nevertheless, the amount of variation unexplained by the measured abiotic variables was relatively high (73%), suggesting the effect of additional regulatory factors. Many fish species use the shallow waters of the bay in transitory or permanent ways, and knowledge about their relationship with the environment is necessary for the success of conservation strategies for this ecosystem.

Direct observations of sex change were made on Patella vulgata, which has long been considered a protandrous hermaphrodite based on indirect methods. Thirty per cent of the male limpets that were marked during the spawning season in 2003 were female when they were re-examined during the spawning season in 2004. This confirms that protandry does occur within the superfamily Patellidae.

Large catches of sole (Solea solea) were made in early 1996 from the south-western North Sea. Sole suffer physiological damage in waters below 3–4 C. In February 1996 cold water of 3–4 C unusually extended from the Continental coast onto the Dogger Bank. It is likely that the increased catches were due to the consequential distribution and behaviour of the sole, making them more susceptible to capture.

Exceptionally large catches of mature sole (Solea solea (L.)) were made in February 1996 by Lowestoft fishermen from the south-western North Sea. Surprisingly this was not welcome. The UK allocation of the North Sea sole is -4 % of the EU Total Allowable Catch (TAC), and fishermen are restricted nationally, and by the fishing companies, to a tightly managed ration. The Lowestoft Journal (8 March 1996) reported the suspension of a local fishing skipper for not throwing back 5000 kg of sole caught in the Silver Pits. We will show that the abnormal catches were due to exceptionally cold waters.

Sole in the North Sea are at the northern extremity of their range, with sole seldom living in waters below 5°C (Horwood, 1993). In fact, North Sea sole were successfully introduced into Lake Quarun, Egypt, where they lived in temperatures in excess of 30°C (El-Zarka, 1965). Young sole migrate from their shallow inshore nursery grounds, such as the Waddensea, as winter approaches (Creutzberg & Fonds, 1971).

Plasmids and phages influence bacterial phenotype and may serve as vectors for transferring genes between bacteria. In the present study, we examined 130 marine bacterioplankton isolates for the presence of plasmids and prophages. Samples were obtained in spring, summer and autumn in the Baltic Sea proper. Plasmids and inducible prophages were found in 19% and 28% of the isolates, respectively. During spring, plasmids and prophages were 41–55% and 30% more common compared to the summer and autumn measurements and prevalence varied up to five-fold between bacterial phylogenetic groups, with the highest plasmid prevalence found in Bacteriodetes (41%), and lysogeny being common in α-, β-, and γ-Proteobacteria (32–50%). Plasmid genome sizes ranged from 1.5–15 kb with most in the 2.1–4.0 kb size-range. No plasmids showed identity to the broad-host-range incompatibility groups N and P. Phage genomes ranged in size from 8–87 kb, with 57% being 35–45 kb in size. Strain typing of phages with similar genome sizes by means of DP-RAPD (degenerated primer randomly amplified polymorphic DNA) showed that all were different (except two that were not resolved). In PFGE (pulsed-field gel electrophoresis) 34% of the lysates produced multiple bands. Transmission electron microscopy suggested that these originated from several phage morphotypes indicating that polylysogeny is common. The widespread distribution of small cryptic plasmids as well as of lysogeny and polylysogeny in Baltic Sea bacterioplankton may have important implications for bacterial phenotype and for lateral gene transfer; hence, the ecological significance of these vectors in marine environments requires further study.

The ‘detergent’ BP 1002 at concentrations of 1 ppm was detected immediately by the larvae of Sabellaria spinulosa which were intensely irritated by it. In loosely covered vessels, allowing the solvent fraction to evaporate, larvae seemed at first to recover but died several weeks later, the control larvae remaining active and normal. The surfactant and stabilizer fractions at concentrations of 2·5 ppm killed the larvae within a day or two.

Sagitta has been several times noticed as a host for various parasitic worms, notably a larval nematode and several trematodes. Larval cestodes have also been seen in it. It is exceeding voracious and apparently eats almost any animal food, especially its own species and small Crustacea, so that it is not to be wondered at if it forms a convenient intermediate host for many worms, and as Sagitta itself is an important fish food it naturally follows that the adults of these parasitic worms are usually found in fish as their final hosts. So far, however, the life histories of the larval forms hitherto found have not been determined, so we are pleased to be able to identify two trematodes belonging to well-known species which inhabit Sagitta as intermediate host and fish as the final host.

In the absence of chemical or physical gradients, random displacement of organisms can result in unpredictable distribution patterns. In spite of a limited locomotive capability, marine nematodes may choose where to settle after re-suspension and may maintain their position in the sediment under calm conditions, leading to small-scale (<1 m) spatial variability. However, in more energetic environments, nematodes become re-suspended with sediments and re-distributed at distances dependent on prevalent hydrodynamic regimes, from metre- to decametre-scale or more. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that micro-habitats (i.e. runnels and sandbars) in a macrotidal sandy beach influence the distribution patterns of free-living marine nematodes by exhibiting contrasting hydrodynamic regimes. Specifically, we predicted patchier distributions in the calmer environment (runnel). We sampled nematodes in each habitat from <1 m to decametre scales. Our results show more heterogeneous spatial distributions in the runnel, presumably owing to a predominance of active displacement under calmer conditions and sediment cohesion by algal films. Biological similarity among runnel replicates was low, whereas replicates from the sandbar exhibited higher similarity, presumably because of homogenization of the sediment and inhabiting fauna by tidal currents. A significant negative correlation between biological similarity and sampling distance was found in the runnel, but not in the sandbar. The most similar samples were the closest in the runnel and the most distant in the sandbar. More patchily distributed taxa were found in the runnel and a larger fraction of homogeneously or randomly distributed taxa in the sandbar. We conclude that different hydrodynamic regimes in contrasting intertidal micro-habitats significantly influenced the nematofaunal distribution, resulting in different spatial patterns next to one another in the same beach. This has significant implications for sampling and monitoring designs and begs the need for detailed studies about the physical and biological processes governing meiobenthic communities.

The growing interest in farming rainbow trout in the sea (MacLeod, 1977) or in brackish water (Tatum, 1973, 1976) is economically important because it involves the use of readily available sites and resources, and provides solutions to problems related to fresh water scarcity or its increased salinity (Al-Hamed, 1971; Al-Daham & Bhatti, 1977) in certain parts of the world.

The diet and the trophic level of the Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi was investigated in the south-west Atlantic Ocean. Stomachs from 3405 specimens, ranging from 10 to 94 cm total length, collected on three research cruises carried out during winter 2011 and summer 2012, were examined at the laboratory. Dietary shifts related to sex, maturity stage, size, age, season, region and hour were examined using generalized linear models. The Argentine hake M. hubbsi fed mainly on zooplankton crustaceans (Themisto gaudichaudii, Euphausia lucens and Munida spp.), followed by fish and cephalopods. During summer, cephalopods (mainly Illex argentinus) were the main prey of M. hubbsi, indicating spatio-temporal changes in the diet. This work also revealed ontogenetic dietary changes associated with size, from zooplankton crustaceans during early life stages (E. lucens, T. gaudichaudii and Munida spp.) to fish and cephalopods. The trophic level of M. hubbsi ranged from 3.43 to 4.51 according to season and region. Cannibalism increased with predator length and contributed a maximum of 8.14% to the diet of M. hubbsi during winter on the inner Patagonian continental shelf.

This is the first detailed analysis of cephalopod beaks from the stomach of a northern bottlenosed whale, Hyperoodon ampullatus (Forster, 1770). The digestive action of many predators barely affects the chitinous beaks of cephalopods and some cetaceans accumulate the beaks in considerable numbers in their stomachs. The present beaks are clean and unbroken.

Identification of cephalopod beaks from stomachs of predators such as sperm whales (see Clarke, 1977), seals (Clarke & Trillmich, 1980) and albatrosses (Clarke, Croxall & Prince, 1980) throws considerable light on the biology and relative ecological importance of the species of cephalopods concerned as well as providing useful information on the diet of the predators.

In recent years much information has accumulated on the composition and distribution of algal populations in the Isle of Man, with increased knowledge of their ecological relationships (Knight & Parke, 1931, 1950; Jones, 1948; Lodge, 1948,1954; Burrows & Lodge, 1949, 1951; Southward, 1953). This, however, has mostly come from studies made in the intertidal region, and even here many problems remain for which, at present, no satisfactory explanation can be found. The mostdimcult of these, perhaps, relates to the appearance of algal species for a limited period of the year only: it is not known where and in what form their life-histories are continued for the rest of the year. The littoral and sublittoral regions are known to have many species in common. This means that the differences between the regions, as environments for the growth of algae, can be bridged by the plasticity of the species concerned. It seemed likely, therefore, that a detailed study of the sublittoral algal populations might help towards an understanding of the ecology of both regions and also of the interactions between them.

The zonation of four species of the genus Bathyporeia, from high-water mark to low-water mark, in Kames Bay, Millport is given. B. pilosa occurs above the high-water mark of neap tides, B. pelagica is a mid-tidal form and B. elegans a low-water form. The latter, together with B. guilliamsoniana, extend beyond low-water mark. Of the population, as it occurs in the sand, 15 % are adult males, 26 % adult females, giving a proportion of adult to immature forms of 4 1 : 59.

The analysis of forty-five tow-net samples taken across the bay at night shows that the same zonation of the species is maintained; the proportion of adults to immature forms in these samples, however, is as 57: 43, and of the 57 % of adults, 42 % are adult males, 15 % adult females.

When the samples are related to the day of the lunar month it is shown that the numbers increase in the tidal waters in the periods immediately preceding the full moon and preceding and partly overlapping the new moon. A nocturnal vertical movement appears to be a marked feature of a few benthic amphipdd families, but the factors which cause this migration are problematical and require much further investigation.

To examine the specific features of trench communities, spatial changes in the assemblages of harpacticoids were investigated at the family level around the Ryukyu Trench (the Ryukyu region) and Kuril Trench (the Kuril region). In the Ryukyu region, there were high average dissimilarities in the harpacticoid assemblages among the trench, trench slope and abyssal plain, indicating that the assemblage structures differ substantially between these topographic settings at the family level. Conversely, in the Kuril region, the average dissimilarities in harpacticoid assemblages between the trench and the trench slope and between the trench and the abyssal plain were lower than that between the slope and the abyssal plain. This result suggests that the hadal assemblage is a transition zone between the slope and the abyssal plain in this region. In addition, the analyses indicate that the composition of harpacticoid assemblages is influenced by the quantity of organic matter in the Ryukyu region, while sediment properties play a key role in the Kuril region. Comparisons of the assemblages between the two regions, however, revealed that the average dissimilarities between the trenches and between the abyssal plains were higher than that between the adjacent slopes. This result suggests that interchange among regions is difficult for deep-sea benthic animals, including harpacticoid copepods, likely due to the presence of physical barriers around trenches.

The regular sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus, a species previously reported from areas of reduced salinities, and Arbacia lixula, a species unreported from diluted waters, were submitted to seawater dilution or seawater dilution in magnesium-supplemented waters. Seawater (35 psu) was either proportionally diluted with filtered dechlorinated tap water (30 psu, 25 psu), or diluted and supplemented with magnesium as MgCl2 (30+Mg, 25+Mg), up to full-strength seawater Mg2+ levels (35 psu, ~54 mM Mg2+). Magnesium supplementation was intended to verify the interfering effect of magnesium on osmo-ionic concentrations of the coelomic fluid (CF) of two ecologically distinct species of sea urchins. After 6 h in control (35 psu) or experimental seawater, CF samples were withdrawn by puncturing through the peristomial membrane. Coelomic fluid osmolality ([Osm]), and concentrations of ([Na+]), ([Cl-]), ([Mg2+]) and ([K+]) were measured for both species. Under all conditions, L. variegatus displayed higher CF osmolality, [Na+], and [K+] values than the water (and A. lixula). Comparatively, L. variegatus is designated as a‘hyper-conformer’, while A. lixula is an ‘iso-conformer’. The CF [Mg2+] showed no evidence of being controlled by either species. Mg2+ supplementation in diluted seawater affected Mg2+ and Cl- levels only. Na+ appears to be taken up actively by L. variegatus, rendering its CF mostly hyper-ionic for Na+ (and hyperosmotic) relative to external seawater. The different gradients observed with the different ions suggest selective permeabilities or ion regulation by L. variegatus.

The myxinoid cyclostomes, of which the hagfish Myxine glutinosa L. is one of the best known examples, are of unique biological interest as representatives of a group of jawless vertebrates which probably had their origin in the pteraspidomorph ostracoderms of the Ordovician era (Nybelin, 1973). They have been much studied by comparative anatomists and physiologists but somewhat neglected by ecologists. There is, for instance, very little critical information on their normal feeding biology. Perhaps one reason for this is that, although hagfish may be extremely abundant locally (their principal habitat requirements are stable, soft muddy sediments and a salinity in excess of 31 %, (Gustafson, 1935)), they tend to be missed by most exploratory fishing and biological sampling programmes. This is because benthic sampling techniques are often ill-adapted for the capture of large active organisms capable of swimming and burrowing and because, unless blocked by the catch, the cod-end mesh sizes of the trawls used by most British commercial fishermen would easily permit the escape of even the largest hagfish. However, the research otter trawls used by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland (D.A.F.S.) for surveying the North Sea stocks of the deep water pink shrimp, Pandalus borealis Krøyer, are fitted with cod-end covers of small mesh, and it is found that the catches frequently include small numbers of hagfish, presumably caught while swimming close to the bottom, or possibly when buried in the surface of the sediments. The present study is largely based on the examination of hagfish collected during the D.A.F.S. Pandalus surveys of 1975 and 1976. The remaining material was kindly provided by Dr J. B. Buchanan of the Dove Marine Laboratory at Cullercoats, Northumberland.

The information received by a fish about a vibrating source will depend on the patterns of excitation of various groups of receptors. Sprats, herrings and other clupeoids have bullae containing gas which are closely related to the sense organs of the utriculi, sacculi and the lateral lines. Structures of particular relevance to the functioning of thissystem are described and an account of their mechanical responses to low frequency pressure stimuli is given.

In this study we describe community parameters such as densities, biomasses, species composition, feeding modes and normalized biomass size-spectra (NBSS) of macrobenthic invertebrate communities from three stations located in the Baker Fjord obtained on four seasonal campaigns in 2008 and 2009. The macrobenthic communities were dominated by small-bodied polychaetes (Paraonidae, Capitellidae and Cirratulidae) characterized by continuous year-round breeding, short life-spans, and fast turnover rates, which in turn regulated the standing stock in the communities. Principal component analysis and multiple-regression analysis demonstrate the distribution of macrobenthic communities in the study area to be mainly controlled by few local environmental conditions. Macrofaunal densities, diversity and feeding modes were significantly correlated with the total organic carbon (TOC; R2 = 0.74; P < 0.001) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a; R2 = 0.55; P < 0.05) content in the sediments. This study also suggests that feeding modes and NBSS can be used to detect and follow possible changes caused by natural perturbations such as glacial lake outburst floods or anthropogenic stressors associated with ecological impacts generated by the construction and operation of hydroelectric power stations in the Baker River.

The spermatophore in the Copepoda is an elongated flask-shaped object produced by the male copepod in which are contained the sperm and associated secretions. The male must attach the spermatophore to the female genital segment in such a position that the opening to the neck of the spermatophore, through which the sperm come out, is in contact with the opening of the female cavity. Placement of the spermatophore elsewhere, in such a manner that connexion with the female genital cavity is not achieved, may not cause fertilization and will waste sperm.

Burrow morphology and mating behaviour of Upogebia noronhensis was studied using resin casting of burrows in the field and observation of laboratory maintained animals. Burrows of U. noronhensis showed a typical Y-shaped pattern in over 70% of the cases analysed. The remaining 30% comprised U-shaped burrows lacking the lower tunnel (shaft) and burrows with long additional branches projecting from the U portion. Results from animals left to construct burrows in the aquarium closely matched those found in nature. Field and laboratory burrows showed that different shapes are related to the collapse of the burrow walls, the burrowing activities of other individuals and species, and to the behaviour of the species itself. U-shaped burrows form as a result of the partial construction of the burrow (the U part is always built first) or owing to the collapse of the shaft. Burrows with additional branches always belonged to males and result from their search for a female with which to reproduce. This process also produced connected burrows. Mating occurs within the female burrow and this is the only time when two animals occupy the same burrow. After mating, the male returns to its burrow and immediately closes the connection. Larvae are planktonic and probably settle in adult areas, since the smallest juvenile burrows were always associated with adult burrows. This may contribute to the high population densities found in the field (∼200 ind m−2), which in consequence facilitates fossorial encounters for reproduction. This is the first time fossorial encounters for reproduction are reported for an Upogebia species and probably for all Thalassinidea.

In the coxal region of Palinurus vulgaris Latr. the following proprioceptors are present: (1) a thoracico-coxal muscular receptor, (2) two innervated elastic strands (depressor and levator receptors), and (3) a coxo-basipodite receptor. Thus, Palinurus has the same number of these organs as some Brachyura and Anomura, but differs from Homarus and Astacus, which have five of them.

In all the five thoracic segments carrying the legs the receptor organs in Palinurus originate on special receptor rods which are thin projections of the endophragmal skeleton.

The muscle elements of the muscular receptor are surrounded by connective tissue which in the proximal part of the muscle forms a thick sheath. To the receptor rod the muscle is attached by a short tendon. The motor fibres reach the receptor muscle at about the midpoint of its course.
