Pseudoeffect (PE-) algebras generalize effect algebras by no longer being necessarily commutative. They are in certain cases representable as the unit interval of a unital po-group, for instance if they fulfil a certain Riesz property.

Several infinitary lattice properties and the countable Riesz interpolation property are studied for PE-algebras on the one hand and for po-groups on the other hand. We establish the exact relationships between the various conditions that are taken into account, and in particular, we examine how properties of a PE-algebra are related to the analogous properties of a representing po-group.

For any positive integer q≧2, let Fq be a finite field with q elements, Fq ((z-1)) be the field of all formal Laurent series in an inderminate z, I denote the valuation ideal z-1Fq [[z-1]] in the ring of formal power series Fq ((z-1)) normalized by P(l) = 1. For any x ∈ I, let the series be the Engel expansin of Laurent series of x. Grabner and Knopfmacher have shown that the P-measure of the set A(α) = {x ∞ I: limn→∞ deg an(x)/n = ά} is l when α = q/(q -l), where deg an(x) is the degree of polynomial an(x). In this paper, we prove that for any α ≧ l, A(α) has Hausdorff dimension l. Among other thing we also show that for any integer m, the following set B(m) = {x ∈ l: deg an+1(x) - deg an(x) = m for any n ≧ l} has Hausdorff dimension 1.

For a simply connected planar domain D with 0 ∈ D and dist(0, ∂D) = 1, let hD(r) be the harmonic measure of ∂ D ∩{|Z| ≤ r} evaluated at 0. The function hD(r) is the distribution of harmonic measure. It has been studied by B. L. Walden and L. A. Ward. We continue their study and answer some questions raised by them by constructing domains with pre-specified distribution.

The higher Lie characters of the symmetric group Sn arise from the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt basis of the free associative algebra. They are indexed by the partitions of n and sum up to the regular character of Sn. A combinatorial description of the multiplicities of their irreducible components is given. As a special case the Kraśkiewicz-Weyman result on the multiplicities of the classical Lie character is obtained.

Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring with nonzero identity and let M be a finitely generated R-module. In this paper, we prove that if an ideal I of R is generated by a u.s.d-sequence on M then the local cohomology module (M) is I-cofinite. Furthermore, for any system of ideals Φ of R, we study the cofiniteness problem in the context of general local cohomology modules.

Let 1 < p < + ∞ or p = 0 and let A = (an)n be an increasing sequence of strictly positive weights on I. Let F be a Fréchet space. It is proved that if λp(A) satisfies the density condition of Heinrich and a certain condition (Ct) holds, then the (LF)-space LBi(λp(A), F) is a topological subspace of Lb(λp(A), F). It is also proved that these conditions are necessary provided F = λq(A) or F contains a complemented copy of Iq with 1 < p ≤ q < +∞.

Let A be a uniformly complete vector sublattice of an Archimedean semiprime f-algebra B and p ∈ {1, 2,…}. It is shown that the set ΠBp (A) = {f1 … fp: fk ∈ A, k = 1, …, p } is a uniformly complete vector sublattice of B. Moreover, if A is provided with an almost f-algebra multiplication * then there exists a positive operator Tp, from ΠBp(A) into A such that fi *…* fp = Tp(f1 …fp) for all f1…fp ∈ A.

As application, being given a uniformly complete almost f-algebra (A, *) and a natural number p ≧ 3, the set Π*p(A) = {f1 *… *fp: fk ∈ A, k = 1…p} is a uniformly complete semiprime f-algebra under the ordering and the multiplication inherited from A.

We investigate the asymptotical behaviour of the transition probabilities of the simple random walk on the 2-comb. In particular, we obtain space-time uniform asymptotical estimates which show the lack of symmetry of this walk better than local limit estimates. Our results also point out the impossibility of getting sub-Gaussian estimates involving the spectral and walk dimensions of the graph.

Characterisations of finite groups in which normality is a transitive relation are presented in the paper. We also characterise the finite groups in which every subgroup is either permutable or coincides with its permutiser as the groups in which every subgroup is permutable.

We consider algebras for which the operation PC of pure closure of subsets satisfies the exchange property. Subsets that are independent with respect to PC are directly independent. We investigate algebras in which PC satisfies the exchange property and which are relatively free on a directly independent generating subset. Examples of such algebras include independence algebras and dinitely generated free modules over principal ideal domains.

Generalizing earlier results of Katriňák, El-Assar and the present author we prove new structure theorems for l-algebras. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the decomposition of an arbitrary bounded lattice into a direct product of (finitely) subdirectly irreducible lattices.

This paper is concerned with the well-known and long-standing k(G V)-problem: If the finite group G acts faithfully and irreducibly on the finite GF(p)-module V and p does not divide the order of G, is the number k(GV) of conjugacy classes of the semidirect product GV bounded above by the order of V? Over the past two decades, through the work of numerous people, by using deep character theoretic arguments this question has been answered in the affirmative except for ρ = 5 for which it is still open. In this paper we suggest a new approach to the k(G V)-problem which is independent of most of the previous work on the problem and which is mainly group theoretical. To demonstrate the potential of the new line of attack we use it to solve the k(G V)-problem for solvable G and large ρ.

It is well known that c0(Z) is amenable and so its global dimension is zero. In this paper we will investigate the cyclic and Hochschild cohomology of Banach algebra c0 (Z, ω-1) and its unitisation with coefficients in its dual space, where ω is a weight on Z which satisfies inf {ω(i)} = 0.Moreover we show that the weak homological bi-dimension of c0 (Z, ω-1) is infinity.

In this paper we present a short definition of the Witten invariants of 3-manifolds. We also give simple proofs of invariance of those obtained for r = 3 and r = 4. Our definition is extracted from the 1993 paper of Lickorish and the Prasolov-Sossinsky book, where it is dispersed over 20 pages. We show by several examples that it is indeed convenient for calculations.

We prove that in the character group of an abelian topological group, the topology associated (in a standard way) to the continuous convergence structure is the finest of all those which induce the topology of simple convergence on the corresponding equicontinuous subsets. If the starting group is furthermore metrizable (or even almost metrizable), we obtain that such a topology coincides with the compact-open topology. This result constitutes a generalization of the theorem of Banach-Dieudonné, which is well known in the theory of locally convex spaces.

We also characterize completeness, in the class of locally quasi-convex metrizable groups, by means of a property which we have called the quasi-convex compactness property, or briefly qcp (Section 3).

The main aim of this paper is to obtain optimality conditions for a constrained set-valued optimization problem. The concept of Clarke epiderivative is introduced and is used to derive necessary optimality conditions. In order to establish sufficient optimality criteria we introduce a new class of set-valued maps which extends the class of convex set-valued maps and is different from the class of invex set-valued maps.

In this paper, we prove that two homogeneous quasi-invariant subspaces are similar only if they are equal. Moreover, we exhibit an example to show how to determine the similarity orbits of quasi-invariant subspaces.

In this paper, we shall show that the constant in Smale's mean value theorem can be reduced to two for a large class of polynomials which includes the odd polynomials with nonzero linear term.

Given two m-tuples of commuting spectral operators on a Hilbert space, T = (T1,…, Tm) and S = (S1,…, Sm), an extended version of Henrici perturbation theorem is obtained for the joint approximate spectrum of S under perturbation by T. We also derive an extended version of Bauer-Fike theorem for such tuples of operators. The method used involves Clifford algebra techniques introduced by McIntosh and Pryde.
