Recently the concept of uniform rotundity was generalized for real Banach spaces by using a type of “area” devised for these spaces. This paper modifies the methods used for uniform rotundity and applies them to weak rotundity in real and complex spaces. This leads to the definition of k-smoothness, k-very smoothness and k-strong smoothness. As an application, several sufficient conditions for reflexivity are obtained.

This work is a detailed analysis of the relationship between reflective subcategories of a category and factorization systems supported by the category.

We consider the function u whose Fourier transform is the positive part of the Fourier transform of a function f on Rn. If n ≤ 2 and f satisfies simple regularity conditions (in particular if f is in the Schwartz space Y(Rn), then u lies in L1(Rn). If n ≥ 3, then simple counterexamples exist; for example, if f(x) = |x|2 exp(-|x|2), then u does not lie in L1(Rn).

The classification of the nilpotent orbits in the Lie algebra of a reductive algebraic group (over an algebraically closed field) is given in all the cases where it was not previously known (E7 and E8 in bad characteristic, F4 in characteristic 3). The paper exploits the tight relation with the corresponding situation over a finite field. A computer is used to study this case for suitable choices of the finite field.

By a theorem of Fell and Tomiyama-Takesaki, an N-homogeneous C*-algebra with spectrum X has the form Γ(E) for some bundle E over X with fibre MN(C), and its isomorphism class is determined by that of E and its pull-backs f*E along homeomorphisms f of X. We describe the homogeneous C*-algebras with spectrum T2 or T3 by classifying the MN-bundles over Tk using elementary homotopy theory. We then use our results to determine the isomorphism classes of a variety of transformation group C*-algebras, twisted group C*-algebras and more general crossed products.

A Fitting class of finite soluble groups is one closed under the formation of normal subgroups and products of normal subgroups. It is shown that the Fitting classes of metanilpotent groups which are quotient group closed as well are primitive saturated formuations.

This paper discusses several properties of topological spaces and how they are refelected by corresponding properties of the associated semi-regularization topologies. For example a space is almost locally connected if and only if its semi-regularization is locally connected. Various separation, connectedness, covering, and mapping properties are considered.

A dihedral number field is a non-normal quartic field K which possesses a quadratic subfield k. That is, for some integer α of k. Integral bases of these fields were known by Sommer (1907), but the form in which they were known was of little use for computational purposes. In this paper we construct integral bases of those dihedral fields with quadratic subfield of the form , d ≢ 1 (mod 8), for which only rational quantities need be determined. Although the general theory may easily be generalized to the case d ≡ 1 (mod 8), the actual determination of integral bases in this case is left to a later paper.

If CS(respectively, O) denotes the class of all completely simple semigroups (respectively, semigroups that are orthodox unions of groups) then CS(respectively, O) is a variety of algebras with respect to the operations of multiplication and inversion. The main result shows that the lattice of subvarieties of is a precisely determined subdirect product of the lattice of subvarieties of CSand the lattice of subvarieties of O. A basis of identities is obtained for any variety in terms of bases of identities for . Several operators on the lattice of subvarieties of are also introduced and studied.

Let G be a second countable locally compact group possessing a normal subgroup N with G/N abelian. We prove that if G/N is discrete then G has T1 primitive ideal space if and only if the G-quasiorbits in Prim N are closed. This condition on G-quasiorbits arose in Pukanzky's work on connected and simply connected solvable Lie groups where it is equivalent to the condition of Auslander and Moore that G be type R on N (-nilradical). Using an abstract version of Pukanzky's arguments due to Green and Pedersen we establish that if G is a connected and simply connected Lie group then Prim G is T1 whenever G-quasiorbits in [G, G] are closed.

Let Gq be the group of permutations of the finite field Fq of odd order q that can be represented by polynomials of the form ax(q+1)/2 + bx with a, b ∈ Fq. It is shown that Gq is isomorphic to the regular wreath product of two cyclic groups. The structure of Gq can also be described in terms of cyclic, dicyclic, and dihedral groups. It also turns out that Gq is isomorphic to the dymmetry group of a regular complex polygon.

We describe the structure of the lower central factors of free centre-by-metabelian groups.

We give an explicit construction of a continuous trace C*algebra with prescribed Dixmier-Douady class, and with only finite-dimensional irreducible representations. These algebras often have non-trivial automorphisms, and we show how a recent description of the outer automorphism group of a stable continuous trace C*algebra follows easily from our main result. Since our motivation came from work on a new notion of central separable algebras, we explore the connections between this purely algebraic subject and C*a1gebras.

Centre-by-metabelian groups with the maximal condition for normal subgroups are exhibited which (a) are residually finite but have quotient groups which are not residually finite; and (b) have all quotients residually finite but are not abelian-by-polycyclic.

In this paper periodic modules over group rings and algebras are considered. A new lower bound for the p-part of the rank of a periodic module with abeian vertex is given, and results on periodic modules with odd/even and small periods are obtained. In particular, it is shown that characters afforded by periodic lattices of odd period satisfy strong properties and that irreducible periodic lattices are always of even period.

The purpose of this paper is to study the so-called canonical monoidal closed structures on concrete categories with constant maps. First of all we give an example of a category of this kind where there exists a non canonical monoidal closed structure. Later, we give a technique to construct a class of suitable full subcategories of the category of T0-spaces, such that all monoidal closed structures on them are canonical. Finally we show that “almost all” useful categories of topological compact spaces admit no monoidal closed structures whatsoever.

The central area of investigation is in the isolation of conditions on mappings which leave invariant the classes of locally finite-dimensional metric spaces and strongly countable-dimensional metric spaces. Examples of such properties are open and closed with discrete point-inverses, open and finite-to-one, or open, closed, and countable-to-one.

A left ideal P in a ring is weakly prime if L, K ⊇ P and LK ⊆ P for left ideals L and K imply L = P or K = P. A prime left ideal is weakly prime but the converse is false. Characterizations of weakly prime left ideals as well as a number of their properties are obtained. The intersection of all the weakly prime left ideals in a ring is a left ideal which in general is contained in (but not equal to) the prime radical.

In an elementary topos if R is a ring and X is a decidable object then there exists a canonical homomorphism from the coproduct of an X-family of R-modules to the product of the same family. In this paper it is shown that this homomorphisms is a monomorphism.
