In this paper we analyze the relationship between o-minimal structures and the notion of ω-saturated one-dimensional t.t.t structures. We prove that if removing any point from such a structure splits it into more than one definably connected component then it must be a one-dimensional simplex of a finite number of o-minimal structures. In addition, we show that even if removing points doesn’t split the structure, additional topological assumptions ensure that the structure is locally o-minimal. As a corollary we obtain the result that if an ω-saturated one-dimensional t.t.t structure admits a topological group structure then it is locally o-minimal. We also prove that the number of connected components in a definable family is uniformly bounded, which implies that an elementary extension of an ω-saturated one-dimensional t.t.t structure is t.t.t as well.

In this paper we try to apply universal algebraic geometry to MV algebras, that is, we study “MV algebraic sets” given by zeros of MV polynomials, and their “coordinate MV algebras”. We also relate algebraic and geometric objects with theories and models taken in Łukasiewicz many valued logic with constants. In particular we focus on the structure of MV polynomials and MV polynomial functions on a given MV algebra.

Glivenko’s theorem states that an arbitrary propositional formula is classically provable if and only if its double negation is intuitionistically provable. The result does not extend to full first-order predicate logic, but does extend to first-order predicate logic without the universal quantifier. A recent paper by Zdanowski shows that Glivenko’s theorem also holds for second-order propositional logic without the universal quantifier. We prove that Glivenko’s theorem extends to some versions of simple type theory without the universal quantifier. Moreover, we prove that Kuroda’s negative translation, which is known to embed classical first-order logic into intuitionistic first-order logic, extends to the same versions of simple type theory. We also prove that the Glivenko property fails for simple type theory once a weak form of functional extensionality is included.

We characterize the effective content and the proof-theoretic strength of a Ramsey-type theorem for bi-colorings of so-called exactly large sets. An exactly large set is a set $X \subset {\bf{N}}$ such that ${\rm{card}}\left( X \right) = {\rm{min}}\left( X \right) + 1$. The theorem we analyze is as follows. For every infinite subset M of N, for every coloring C of the exactly large subsets of M in two colors, there exists and infinite subset L of M such that C is constant on all exactly large subsets of L. This theorem is essentially due to Pudlák and Rödl and independently to Farmaki. We prove that—over RCA0 —this theorem is equivalent to closure under the ωth Turing jump (i.e., under arithmetical truth). Natural combinatorial theorems at this level of complexity are rare. In terms of Reverse Mathematics we give the first Ramsey-theoretic characterization of ${\rm{ACA}}_0^ +$. Our results give a complete characterization of the theorem from the point of view of Computability Theory and of the Proof Theory of Arithmetic. This nicely extends the current knowledge about the strength of Ramsey’s Theorem. We also show that analogous results hold for a related principle based on the Regressive Ramsey’s Theorem. We conjecture that analogous results hold for larger ordinals.

We show that Shelah’s Eventual Categoricity Conjecture for successors follows from the existence of class many strongly compact cardinals. This is the first time the consistency of this conjecture has been proven. We do so by showing that every AEC with LS(K) below a strongly compact cardinal κ is < κ-tame and applying the categoricity transfer of Grossberg and VanDieren [11]. These techniques also apply to measurable and weakly compact cardinals and we prove similar tameness results under those hypotheses. We isolate a dual property to tameness, called type shortness, and show that it follows similarly from large cardinals.

We study the long-standing open problem of giving $\forall {\rm{\Sigma }}_1^b$ separations for fragments of bounded arithmetic in the relativized setting. Rather than considering the usual fragments defined by the amount of induction they allow, we study Jeřábek’s theories for approximate counting and their subtheories. We show that the $\forall {\rm{\Sigma }}_1^b$ Herbrandized ordering principle is unprovable in a fragment of bounded arithmetic that includes the injective weak pigeonhole principle for polynomial time functions, and also in a fragment that includes the surjective weak pigeonhole principle for FPNP functions. We further give new propositional translations, in terms of random resolution refutations, for the consequences of $T_2^1$ augmented with the surjective weak pigeonhole principle for polynomial time functions.

Our results in this paper increase the model-theoretic precision of a widely used method for building ultrafilters, and so advance the general problem of constructing ultrafilters whose ultrapowers have a precise degree of saturation. We begin by showing that any flexible regular ultrafilter makes the product of an unbounded sequence of finite cardinals large, thus saturating any stable theory. We then prove directly that a “bottleneck” in the inductive construction of a regular ultrafilter on λ (i.e., a point after which all antichains of ${\cal P}\left( \lambda \right)/{\cal D}$ have cardinality less than λ) essentially prevents any subsequent ultrafilter from being flexible, thus from saturating any nonlow theory. The constructions are as follows. First, we construct a regular filter ${\cal D}$ on λ so that any ultrafilter extending ${\cal D}$ fails to ${\lambda ^ + }$-saturate ultrapowers of the random graph, thus of any unstable theory. The proof constructs the omitted random graph type directly. Second, assuming existence of a measurable cardinal κ, we construct a regular ultrafilter on $\lambda > \kappa$ which is λ-flexible but not ${\kappa ^{ + + }}$-good, improving our previous answer to a question raised in Dow (1985). Third, assuming a weakly compact cardinal κ, we construct an ultrafilter to show that ${\rm{lcf}}\left( {{\aleph _0}} \right)$ may be small while all symmetric cuts of cofinality κ are realized. Thus certain families of precuts may be realized while still failing to saturate any unstable theory.

We extend our work on difference randomness. Each component of a difference test is a Boolean combination of two r.e. open sets; here we consider tests in which the kth component is a Boolean combination of g(k) r.e. open sets for a given recursive function g. We use this method to produce an alternate characterization of weak Demuth randomness in terms of these tests and further show that a real is weakly Demuth random if and only if it is Martin-Löf random and cannot compute a strongly prompt r.e. set. We conclude with a study of related lowness notions and obtain as a corollary that lowness for balanced randomness is equivalent to being recursive.

Varieties of the Fan Theorem have recently been developed in reverse constructive mathematics, corresponding to different continuity principles. They form a natural implicational hierarchy. Some of the implications have been shown to be strict, others strict in a weak context, and yet others not at all, using disparate techniques. Here we present a family of related Kripke models which separates all of the as yet identified fan theorems.

We show the existence of noncomputable oracles which are low for Demuth randomness, answering a question in [15] (also Problem 5.5.19 in [34]). We fully characterize lowness for Demuth randomness using an appropriate notion of traceability. Central to this characterization is a partial relativization of Demuth randomness, which may be more natural than the fully relativized version. We also show that an oracle is low for weak Demuth randomness if and only if it is computable.

We establish several results regarding dividing and forking in NTP2 theories. We show that dividing is the same as array-dividing. Combining it with existence of strictly invariant sequences we deduce that forking satisfies the chain condition over extension bases (namely, the forking ideal is S1, in Hrushovski’s terminology). Using it we prove an independence theorem over extension bases (which, in the case of simple theories, specializes to the ordinary independence theorem). As an application we show that Lascar strong type and compact strong type coincide over extension bases in an NTP2 theory.

We also define the dividing order of a theory—a generalization of Poizat’s fundamental order from stable theories—and give some equivalent characterizations under the assumption of NTP2. The last section is devoted to a refinement of the class of strong theories and its place in the classification hierarchy.

We investigate some common points between stable structures and weakly small structures and define a structure M to be fine if the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the topological space ${S_\varphi }\left( {dc{l^{eq}}\left( A \right)} \right)$ is an ordinal for every finite subset A of M and every formula $\varphi \left( {x,y} \right)$ where x is of arity 1. By definition, a theory is fine if all its models are so. Stable theories and small theories are fine, and weakly minimal structures are fine. For any finite subset A of a fine group G, the traces on the algebraic closure $acl\left( A \right)$ of A of definable subgroups of G over $acl\left( A \right)$ which are boolean combinations of instances of an arbitrary fixed formula can decrease only finitely many times. An infinite field with a fine theory has no additive nor multiplicative proper definable subgroups of finite index, nor Artin-Schreier extensions.

The set theory ΚΡΠN+1 for ΠN+1-reflecting universes is shown to be ΠN+1-conservative over iterations of ΠN-recursively Mahlo operations for each N ≥ 2.

Let κ be the cardinality of some saturated model of Peano Arithmetic. There is a set of ${2^{{\aleph _0}}}$ saturated models of PA, each having cardinality κ, such that whenever M and N are two distinct models from this set, then Aut(${\cal M}$) ≇ Aut ($${\cal N}$$).

We prove a p-adic, local version of the Monotonicity Theorem for P-minimal structures. The existence of such a theorem was originally conjectured by Haskell and Macpherson. We approach the problem by considering the first order strict derivative. In particular, we show that, for a wide class of P-minimal structures, the definable functions f : K → K are almost everywhere strictly differentiable and satisfy the Local Jacobian Property.

We consider the model theoretic notion of convex orderability, which fits strictly between the notions of VC-minimality and dp-minimality. In some classes of algebraic theories, however, we show that convex orderability and VC-minimality are equivalent, and use this to give a complete classification of VC-minimal theories of ordered groups and abelian groups. Consequences for fields are also considered, including a necessary condition for a theory of valued fields to be quasi-VC-minimal. For example, the p-adics are not quasi-VC-minimal.

Given a class ${\cal C}$ of subgroups of a topological group G, we say that a subgroup $H \in {\cal C}$ is a universal${\cal C}$subgroup of G if every subgroup $K \in {\cal C}$ is a continuous homomorphic preimage of H. Such subgroups may be regarded as complete members of ${\cal C}$ with respect to a natural preorder on the set of subgroups of G. We show that for any locally compact Polish group G, the countable power Gω has a universal Kσ subgroup and a universal compactly generated subgroup. We prove a weaker version of this in the nonlocally compact case and provide an example showing that this result cannot readily be improved. Additionally, we show that many standard Banach spaces (viewed as additive topological groups) have universal Kσ and compactly generated subgroups. As an aside, we explore the relationship between the classes of Kσ and compactly generated subgroups and give conditions under which the two coincide.

In the first part we show a counterexample to a conjecture by Shelah regarding the existence of indiscernible sequences in dependent theories (up to the first inaccessible cardinal). In the second part we discuss generic pairs, and give an example where the pair is not dependent. Then we define the notion of directionality which deals with counting the number of coheirs of a type and we give examples of the different possibilities. Then we discuss nonsplintering, an interesting notion that appears in the work of Rami Grossberg, Andrés Villaveces and Monica VanDieren, and we show that it is not trivial (in the sense that it can be different than splitting) whenever the directionality of the theory is not small. In the appendix we study dense types in RCF.

Regular groups and fields are common generalizations of minimal and quasi-minimal groups and fields, so the conjectures that minimal or quasi-minimal fields are algebraically closed have their common generalization to the conjecture that each regular field is algebraically closed. Standard arguments show that a generically stable regular field is algebraically closed. Let K be a regular field which is not generically stable and let p be its global generic type. We observe that if K has a finite extension L of degree n, then P(n) has unbounded orbit under the action of the multiplicative group of L.

Known to be true in the minimal context, it remains wide open whether regular, or even quasi-minimal, groups are abelian. We show that if it is not the case, then there is a counter-example with a unique nontrivial conjugacy class, and we notice that a classical group with one nontrivial conjugacy class is not quasi-minimal, because the centralizers of all elements are uncountable. Then, we construct a group of cardinality ω1 with only one nontrivial conjugacy class and such that the centralizers of all nontrivial elements are countable.

If X0 and X1 are both generic, the theories of the degrees below X0 and X1 are the same. The same is true if both are random. We show that the n-genericity or n-randomness of X do not suffice to guarantee that the degrees below X have these common theories. We also show that these two theories (for generics and randoms) are different. These results answer questions of Jockusch as well as Barmpalias, Day and Lewis.
