Paleozoic corals are very rare in rocky shore settings. The only Paleozoic encrusting coral so far reported from this environment is Favosites sp. from Ordovician rocky shore deposits in Manitoba, Canada (Johnson and Baarli, 1987). Reading and Poole (1961) reported corals and brachiopods that occur between, and “coating,” boulders from a Silurian rocky shore in England, but it appears that the corals and brachiopods only occur in the sediment enveloping the boulders, not as encrusters on the surfaces of the boulders. One reason for the sparse record of Paleozoic corals in rocky shore settings is the scarcity of described Paleozoic rocky shore deposits themselves. Johnson (1988) found only 20 examples of Paleozoic rocky shores in a compilation of references on ancient rocky shores from the literature. The paucity of described ancient rocky shores has been attributed to the prevalence in the past of epicontinental seas with little relief upon which to develop rocky shores and with higher wave attenuation farther from shore (Boucot, 1981; Harland and Pickerill, 1984). Johnson (1988) concluded that the major reason for the rarity of ancient rocky shores in the literature is the difficulty with which they are recognized and studied, owing to the relatively poor exposure of most unconformity surfaces. The rocky shore environment was also probably hostile to many Paleozoic coral genera. Recent scleractinian corals may serve as analogues because they are also not very abundant in rocky shore settings despite their great abundance in similar shallow-water, high-wave-energy reefal environments. Turbidity and relative substrate stability may be important limiting factors for corals in rocky shore environments. Many corals are known to be highly sensitive to sediment in the water column. Substrate stability (Wilson, 1987) and the scouring effects of sand in high-energy environments (Palmer and Palmer, 1977) also have been shown to affect the abundance and diversity of organisms encrusting cobbles and boulders.

Ferugliotherium windhauseni Bonaparte, 1986, the only species of the genus Ferugliotherium, was based on an isolated m2 and placed in a new family, the Ferugliotheriidae, which was tentatively assigned to the order Multituberculata, subclass Allotheria (Bonaparte, 1986a). Additional specimens subsequently referred to F. windhauseni by Bonaparte et al. (1989), Bonaparte (1990), and Krause et al. (1992) include isolated upper and lower incisors, anterior upper and lower premolars, a complete M1, and an anterior fragment of m1. These remains, if correctly associated, serve to confirm the multituberculate affinities of Ferugliotherium, the first known multituberculate from Gondwanaland (Krause et al., 1992).

The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 1990, Op. 1609) ruled that A catalogue of the organic remains of the County of Wilts by Benett (1831b) is an available work for the purposes of taxonomic nomenclature. Prior to the ruling, there was some question about the availability of her privately printed catalogue, in which she erected many validly proposed taxa by name and figure or by indication to previously available works. The ICZN Opinion cited the paper by Spamer et al. (1989) as documentation of the taxonomic nomenclature used by Benett and the disposition of her collection in which there is type material for species proposed by her and by other authors.

In the year ending October 1, 1992, editorial decisions were made on 58 manuscripts. Of these, 22 (38%) were accepted and 36 (62%) were initially rejected for publication. Many of the papers in the latter category were recommended for resubmission, and several were subsequently accepted. The actual acceptance rate is therefore close to 50 percent of submitted papers. An additional 10 manuscripts are currently under review.

The crinoid column is a paradox of crinoid paleontology. The crown is required for taxonomic identification and, therefore, prerequisite for phylogenetic, paleoecologic, or other studies. However, column elements (columnals and pluricolumnals) are by far the most common crinoidal fossil remains. The biostratigraphic utility of crinoid columns has been demonstrated in some cases (e.g., Donovan, 1984), but this is done with the risk of developing a parataxonomy among crinoids because in most cases columnals are not associated with crowns and, therefore, cannot be assigned to crown species with certainty.

Dr. E. I. Schornikov (Institute of Marine Biology, Far East Branch, Academy of Sciences of Russia, Vladivostok) has kindly sent comparative specimens informing us that two of our species described from the Gulf of Alaska are junior synonyms of species that Schornikov described in 1974. Leptocythere klutinensis Forester and Brouwers, 1985, p. 364–366, figures 4.1–4.8, 7.6 is a junior synonym of Leptocythere polymorpha Schornikov, 1974, p. 155–157, text-figure 10, Plate 2, figure 3. Cytheromorpha knikensis Forester and Brouwers, 1985, 357–362, figures 5.1–5.8, 6.3–6.6, 7.1–7.2, is a junior synonym of Cytheromorpha lagunae Schornikov, 1974, 153–155, text-figure 9.

Rosette-shaped problematica are relatively common structures in the Phanerozoic rock record. Historically, they have been accorded a variety of names and documented from various shallow to deep marine environments. Unfortunately, the detailed interpretation of many such structures as biogenic (trace fossils, medusoids, or other body fossils; see, for example, Häntzschel, 1970, 1975) or nonbiogenic (for example, Pickerill and Harris, 1979) in origin still remains to be resolved. However, a detailed analysis of one such structure by Fürsich and Bromley (1985), namely Dactyloidites Hall, 1886, convincingly demonstrated its biogenic origin. The distinctive morphology of Dactyloidites and its synonyms was interpreted by Fürsich and Bromley (1985) to result from successive probings of an essentially stationary deposit-feeding, worm-like organism, possibly possessing a proboscis, to produce a rosetted, vertical spreiten with a centrally located, vertical or subvertical shaft.

I have the great pleasure to be the citationist for presentation of the 1992 Paleontological Society Medal to Dr. Malcolm C. McKenna. Malcolm McKenna has had a profound influence on our profession, both as a research scientist and a mentor. He is one of the most broadly trained and interested scientists I know, and he has a consuming passion for learning. He loves all aspects of paleontology—field work, literature, laboratory analysis of specimens, theory, even fossil preparation (in his enthusiasm to uncover critical specimens, or trusting only himself to perform delicate preparation of unique fossils). Malcolm has never been afraid to propose controversial ideas, to change his mind when wrong, to tackle problems that others consider insoluble, or to incorporate new scientific techniques in his work before others realize their significance.

Fossil barnacles are poorly known from the West Indies in general and Jamaica in particular. The only records from Jamaica to date have been of occasional balanomorphs collected from Neogene deposits (Newman and Ladd, 1974; Morris, in press). It is therefore significant to report what may be the first fossil lepadomorph from the island, preserved as a scaled peduncle. This is also the oldest known Jamaican, and probably Caribbean, barnacle, coming from the Upper Cretaceous. This specimen was discovered by the junior author in the Geology Museum, University of the West Indies at Mona. Barnacle terminology used herein follows that of Newman et al. (1969).

Several specimens of biogenic structures somewhat resembling plug-shaped ichnofossils have been collected in two muddy deposits, Sicilian (Early Pleistocene) in age (Bossio et al., 1987), outcropping near Lecce, southern Apulia, Italy. One sequence is exposed in an unused quarry located at the eastern side of the Cutrofiano–Supersano road, 31 km post; the other one is in an active quarry, southwest of Lecce, near the village of San Pietro in Lama (Figure 1). The diagnostic features of the traces differ from those of the five ichnogenera recognized by Pemberton et al. (1988) for plug-shaped ichnofossils. The minor ichnogenera related to plug-shaped trace fossils, as indicated by those authors, are also different from the present structure. A new ichnogenus is proposed to cover this form.

In recognition of the renaissance enjoyed in the field of vertebrate morphology and the success of the previous European congresses, we are now planning our 4th International Congress for Chicago, July 31–Aug. 4, 1994. Plenary lectures and symposia as well as contributed posters and talks will be presented.

The fossil brachiopods of the Caribbean region are reasonably well known following publication of Cooper's (1979) monograph; however, the Jamaican fauna was not considered in this volume. Until recently, only Trechmann (1927, 1930) had described and figured fossil brachiopods from the island. Harper (1993; Harper and Donovan, 1990) has recently revised Trechmann's identifications and added to the still small faunal list, which includes two Cretaceous and 11 Cenozoic species (excluding those discussed below). Further specimens continue to be found and the present communication is a description of a significant collection of small terebratellaceans from the top of the Paleocene to Eocene Richmond Formation of eastern Jamaica. One of the two species described herein was originally recognized on the basis of three brachial valves as Argyrotheca sp. 1 in Harper (1993). The availability of superior material has confirmed the uniqueness of this species and has permitted adequate description and diagnosis. All specimens described herein are deposited in the James Mitchell Museum of University College, Galway (JMM), and the British Museum (Natural History), London (BMNH).

Retiolitid graptolites are a very common component in Silurian graptolite faunas of the Canadian Arctic, both in flattened form on shale surfaces and in uncompressed form in limestone concretions found in the enclosing shales (Lenz and Melchin, 1987). Upper Wenlock and Ludlow rocks are particularly prolific, having yielded about 20 species of retiolitids to date. One of the collections made during the summer of 1991 was a single piece of talus-derived shale containing 10 complete and slightly fragmented retiolitids. These specimens are morphologically unique, and their description is the purpose of this note.

President Kaesler, John Flynn, members of the Society, and guests, this has come as a very pleasant surprise. I am only sorry not to be here in person to blush at the remarks of my friend and former student. Or is it student and former friend? At the moment I'm in the hinterlands of China. In case John has said anything he shouldn't, rest assured that I'll get even!
