The crustacean microcoprolite Palaxius floridanus n. isp. is described from shallow-water carbonate platform deposits of Pleistocene limestones of south Florida. Palaxius floridanus n. isp. occurs in moderate-energy packstones and grainstones of the oolite facies of the Miami Limestone, and in skeletal packstones of the Key Largo Limestone, ranging in age from marine isotope stage (MIS) 11 to MIS 5a (ca. 400–80 kyr BP). The new ichnospecies resembles P. decemlunulatus, which has been described previously from Oligocene deposits. Late Jurassic and Late Cretaceous forms described as P. decemlunulatus belong to a new ichnogenus and new ichnospecies, respectively, yet to be described.

A preliminary comparison of Early Cretaceous paleocommunities in the Caribbean and contiguous Southern Western Interior provinces of North America suggests that the important factors for the differences were climate, basinal tectonics, sedimentation rates and the resulting substrates, environmental heterogeneity, evolution rates, and migration paths. Some paleocommunities were endemic to one province, and others were found in both provinces but differed in relative abundance patterns, species composition, diversity, and trophic structure.

Significant new occurrences of Devonian articulate brachiopods retaining color patterns including Stringocephalus burtini Defrance from the Givetian of southern England with both concentric and radial bands, an undetermined stringocephalid brachiopod with concentric bands from the Givetian of the western Brooks Range, Alaska, Beachia cf. B. thunii (Clarke) from the mid-Early Devonian Oriskany Sandstone of Schoharie, New York, with a prominent pair of radial color bands, and Athyris vittata Hall from the early Givetian Ferron Point Formation of Michigan with numerous radial color bands are illustrated. The presence of preserved color patterns is documented for the first time in members of the family Stringocephalidae King and in the family Athyrididae McCoy.

A large and abundant columnar stromatoporoid, Quasiaulacera n. gen., from the Ellis Bay Formation, up to 3 m long and 40 cm in diameter, marks the Hirnantian (latest Ordovician) of Anticosti Island. Two species are present: Quasiaulacera stellata n. sp. from the basal Ellis Bay Formation (basal Prinsta Member, lower Hirnantian) along the northeastern coast of the island, and the type species Q. occidua n. sp. from the upper Ellis Bay Formation (Lousy Cove Member, upper Hirnantian) in the western carbonate facies of the island. Quasiaulacera is rare or absent in the reefal Laframboise Member (uppermost Hirnantian) of the formation. The new genus differs from Aulacera in the underlying Vaureal Formation (upper Katian) in having a large central axial zone marked by a single stack of large, convex-up cyst-plates, that is surrounded by a middle layer of small, concentric microcyst-plates, in places denticulate, and an outer layer composed of concentric laminae with dense pillars, in which microcyst-plates are either absent or rare. The outer two layers are defined by longitudinal fluting; there are no branching forms. Both species demonstrate a ball-like holdfast system, some with diameters of 30 to 70 cm, microbially cemented into the substrate. Quasiaulacera “gigantism” in the paleotropical Anticosti Basin evolved at a time of global cooling associated with the Hirnantian glaciation in south polar Gondwana, but terminated in mass extinction of the aulaceratids at the O/S boundary in Laurentia. This supports other evidence that the Hirnantian featured not only generic loss, but also innovation and migration in tropical latitudes.

A faunule of silicified hypercalcified “sphinctozoan” sponges has been recovered from a clast of Upper Ordovician limestone out of the Early Devonian Karheen Formation on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. Included in the faunule are abundant examples of the new genus Girtyocoeliana, represented by Girtyocoeliana epiporata (Rigby and Potter), and Corymbospongia adnata Rigby and Potter, along with rare Corymbospongia amplia n. sp., and Girtyocoelia(?) sp., plus common Amblysiphonella sp. 1 and rare Amblysiphonella(?) sp. 2. The assemblage is similar to that from Ordovician clasts from the eastern Klamath Mountains of northern California. This indicates that the Alexander terrane of southeastern Alaska is related paleogeographically to the lithologically and paleontologically similar terrane of the eastern Klamath Mountains.

This lithology and fossil assemblage of the clast cannot be tied to any currently known local rock units on Prince of Wales Island. Other clasts in the conglomerate appear to have been locally derived, so it is inferred that the limestone clasts were also locally derived, indicating the presence of a previously undocumented Ordovician limestone unit on northern Prince of Wales Island.

The Hadim Nappe, which is one of the allochthonous tectonic units in the Tauride Belt, in southern Turkey, includes a continuous stratigraphic succession from the Middle(?)–Late Devonian to Late Cretaceous. A relatively complete succession of the upper Serpukhovian to Bashkirian is exposed in the Central Taurides, where two sections (Yassıpınar and Gölbelen) have been selected for detailed biostratigraphic investigations. The Mississippian-Pennsylvanian boundary in these sections was determined by the first appearance datum of the Plectostaffella jakhensis and located in the oolitic limestone facies indicating a shallow-water depositional environment. The uppermost Serpukhovian and regional Bashkirian substages (Syuranian, Akavasian, Askynbashian, and Arkhangelskian) were determined by index taxa, namely Plectostaffella jakhensis, P. bogdanovkensis, P. varvariensis, Pseudostaffella antiqua, Staffellaeformes staffellaeformis, Tikhonovichiella tikhonovichi, and Verella spicata. Fifty fusulinid species belonging to fourteen genera were determined in two sections, in which two species are new: Depratina turani Akbaş new species and Tikhonovichiella praetikhonovichi Akbaş new species. The taxonomic positions of two fusulinid species (Depratina convoluta n. comb. and Staffellaeformes parva robusta n. comb.) are revised. The studied fusulinid assemblages correlate with fusulinid assemblages from the southern Urals, Russian Platform, Donetz Basin, Darvaz, Spain, central Iran, and some other regions of the Tethyan Realm.

Previously unknown ontogenies of five lichid genera, Dicranopeltis, Platylichas, Borealarges, Dicranogmus and Radiolichas, are described and placed in the context provided by a review of known lichid ontogenies. Lichid phylogenies have been based on holaspid morphology alone without reference to ontogeny. To broaden knowledge of lichid phylogeny, an analysis, based on the last protaspid instar of lichids and possible sister group taxa, is conducted. The results of this analysis show that, within the lichids, the traditional subfamily groupings are not supported, and the sister group of lichids is more likely to be found within the Proetida than the Odontopleurida. Tubercles, a prominent feature of lichid morphology, have not been considered taxonomically significant. An examination suggests that tubercle arrangement and the pattern of change of tubercle arrangement through ontogeny could be important in defining taxa. It is recommended that future work on lichid phylogeny include ontogenetic information and patterns of change in development.

Alcymene n. gen. comprises a monophyletic group of calymenids known from the Ludlow Series of Sweden and the British Isles. The sister species Alcymene alveus and A. lindstroemi n. gen. and spp. (Hemse Beds, Gotland, Sweden) are most closely related to the type species A. neointermedia (Richter and Richter), which occurs in overlying and underlying strata at nearby localities. Structural modification of A. alveus and A. lindstroemi, especially the development of a greatly broadened and troughed librigenal border, can be interpreted as “snowshoe” adaptations for increased stability on an offshore mud substrate.

Sciadiocrinus Moore and Plummer is synonymized with Schistocrinus Moore and Plummer, with the name Sciadiocrinus retained by the Law of Priority. This synonymy is based on a reexamination of the type material, study of a previously undescribed ontogenetic sequence in S. tegillum Strimple and Moore, and close inspection of separate radial plates and anal-sac spines. The holotype specimen of the type species of Sciadiocrinus was incorrectly illustrated in the original description of the genus, and appears to be immature. The basal plates of this specimen are shown to be separated from each other by the junction of the radial plates with the infrabasals—a principal character in the original concept of Schistocrinus. The Sciadiocrinus tegillum hypodigm now includes specimens which also have relatively large radial–infrabasal sutures as well as individuals with little or no contact between these plates. Examination of this collection and previously described material shows that mode of arm branching, details of radial-plate articular facets, and some features of the anal-sac spines are also equivalent in the two genera.

Sciadiocrinus, presently classified in the family Pirasocrinidae, is distinct from all known pirasocrinid taxa in a number of morphological characters. We believe the genus should be removed from the Pirasocrinidae, and recommend its assignment to the family Anobasicrinidae based primarily on similarities in arm structure. The remarkable convergence between Sciadiocrinus and the Pirasocrinidae emphasizes the adaptive significance of the spinose, umbrella-like anal-sac roof, which apparently served as a deterrent to predators.

The Chilean species traditionally assigned to the genera Chlamys Röding, 1798 or Zygochlamys Ihering, 1907 are now placed in two new endemic South American taxa: Dietotenhosen n. gen. (middle Miocene–early middle Pliocene), to include the southeastern Pacific Ocean species D. hupeanus (Philippi, 1887) n. comb. and D. remondi (Philippi, 1887) n. comb., and Ckaraosippur n. gen. (earliest middle Miocene–Pliocene), for C. calderensis (Möricke, 1896) n. comb. (Chile) and C. camachoi n. sp. (Argentina). Both genera are the youngest survivors of the tribe Chlamydini in southern South America. None of them is related to the circumpolar genus Psychrochlamys Jonkers, 2003, and the previous proposal of the dispersal through the Antarctic Circumpolar Current for the species included herein in Dietotenhosen is rejected.

Two new eurypterids, a pterygotid Erettopterus qujingensis n. sp., and a slimoniid, Slimonia sp., are described from the upper Silurian (Pridolian) Yulongsi Formation of Yunnan Province, China. Erettopterus qujingensis n. sp. is characterized by several inversely curved ramus denticles and a metastoma with a deep notch in the center. The discovery not only extends the geographic extent of the genus Erettopterus and Slimonia from Euramerica to southwest China, but also gives insight into the similarity of ecosystem structures across the Silurian world.

Large collections of well-preserved specimens of the ammonite Baculites inornatus Meek (1862) from two lower to middle Campanian localities on the Pacific coast of North America are analyzed quantitatively to examine both variability and evolutionary change of species-level distinguishing characters. To this end, we present a new method of describing the morphology of the biostratigraphically important Upper Cretaceous zonal index fossil Baculites, using five independent shell characters that can be measured quantitatively. We then use this method to test hypotheses of phyletic evolutionary change in B. inornatus specimens collected from Sucia Island, Washington, USA, and Punta San Jose, Baja California, Mexico.

The greatest observed character change is in mature shell size: baculitids from the older of the two outcrops (Sucia islands) show a smaller mean diameter at maturity compared to those of the younger of the two outcrops (Punta San Jose). Other than this phyletic size increase, no other directional changes were observed from specimens collected at sub-meter precision from the 90 m-thick measured stratigraphic section of the Rosario Formation located at Punta San Jose. Importantly, neither the younger nor older baculitid assemblages show a size distribution of mature specimens that can be attributed to sexual dimorphism. We observed fluctuating proportions of individuals with ribs and/or keels through this section; since both characters have been used in previous taxonomic studies to define, or differentiate between, other Baculites species, our results indicate that no single character is sufficient to discriminate species within this lineage, and that there is far more variation of these characters than has previously been accepted. Our methodology can also be used to assess morphologic variation and taxonomic assignments of Baculites species in other biogeographic provinces, as well as to evaluate ecological influences on population variation and to test hypotheses of lineage evolution.

Brachiopods suffered high levels of extinction during the Permian–Triassic crisis, and their diversity failed to return to Permian levels. In the aftermath of the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, brachiopods were extremely rare worldwide, especially in the southern hemisphere. Here, we report a new Early Triassic brachiopod fauna from the Selong section in southern Tibet, China. A new genus and three new species have been identified: Selongthyris plana Wang and Chen n. gen. n. sp., Piarorhynchella selongensis Wang and Chen n. sp., and Schwagerispira cheni Wang and Chen n. sp., which are typical. The ontogenies and internal structures of these three new species are described in detail. This brachiopod fauna corresponds to the Neospathodus pakistanensis and Neospathodus waageni conodont biozones and Kashmirites and Anasibirites ammonoid biozones, indicating a late Dienerian to late Smithian age. The post-extinction recovery of brachiopods in the Himalayas may have begun by the early Smithian of the Early Triassic. In addition, these species did not persist into the Spathian substage, suggesting that the newly evolved brachiopods in the southern Tethys were severely affected by the late Smithian extinction event.

Harpactocarcinus punctulatus istriensis Bachmayer and Nosan, 1959 is elevated to species level. Analysis of the larger foraminiferans associated with specimens of H. istriensis suggests a habitat preference for off-shore, clear, shelf environments below fair-weather wave base and an age of early to middle Lutetian (Eocene). A review of the paleoenvironmental indicators for nearly all species within the genera referred to the Zanthopsidae Via, 1959 suggests that all exhibit similar habitat preferences. Description of the paleoenvironmental preference for an entire extinct decapod family has not before been possible.

Previously described faunas of Early Silurian through Late Pennsylvanian age from the Alexander terrane have been endemic, or have variously suggested North American or Asiatic affinities, leaving the paleogeographic history of the terrane uncertain although indicating a location closer to North America than to Asia (Armstrong, 1970; Douglass, 1971; Savage, 1981, 1985, 1989; Savage et al., 1978; Savage and Barkeley, 1985; Soja, 1988; Vaskey, 1982). The occurrence reported here of the Canadian Arctic brachiopods Nanukidium cf. N. cunninghamensis and Atrypoidea scheii in the Alexander terrane during the Late Silurian could be additional evidence supporting the view that the Alexander terrane was not far removed from the North American craton during middle Paleozoic time.

The purpose of this note is to point out the similarities between Protosalvinia (Foerstia) and Sidetes (Spathiocaris) and to discuss characters that can be used to distinguish the two taxa. Protosalvinia Clarke, 1885 (Figure 1.1-1.4), also commonly referred to by the junior subjective synonym Foerstia, is a plant fossil that is frequently noted as occurring in Upper Devonian black shale sequences of North America. This taxon has been of great interest to stratigraphers, paleoecologists, plant taxonomists, and plant morphologists over the years (see, for example, Winslow, 1962, p. 7, p. 22, fig. 3; Barron and Ettensohn, 1981, p. 30-31; Matthews, 1983; and Romankiw et al., 1988). Most workers in recent years have considered Protosalvinia to be a marine alga, but there is also evidence for a land plant affinity (Romankiw et al., 1988).

A bivalve faunule of six species is described from the Upper Triassic Jiapila Formation at the headwaters of the Yangtze River, southern Qinghai, China. The new species, Neomegalodon cornutus and Quemocuomegalodon circularis, are described. The type species of Quemocuomegalodon, Q. orientus, is revised. Quemocuomegalodon orientus Yao, Sha, and Zhang (2003) is now known from abundant, well-preserved specimens that show great variation in shape, size, thickness of shell, and dentition, and the species Q. longitatus, Yao, Sha, and Zhang (2003) is now placed in synonymy with Q. orientus. There are significant morphologic differences between the external appearance of shelled specimens and the internal molds of species of Quemocuomegalodon. This suggests the need for the re-evaluation of many megalodontid species from elsewhere that are known only from internal molds.

Metoposaurids are temnospondyl amphibians that are well known from Upper Triassic deposits in North America, Europe, India, and Africa. Two species of metoposaurids, Koskinonodon perfectus and Apachesaurus gregorii, are among the most common fossils found in the Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) of the southwestern United States. The two are distinguished on the basis of several cranial traits and the morphology of their intercentra, and are more informally distinguished by their overall size and biostratigraphic range. While material of adult metoposaurids is extremely common in Upper Triassic deposits, described material of juveniles is very rare, which limits the study of ontogenetic trajectories that would assist in assessing whether diagnostic traits of the smaller A. gregorii are also ontogenetically influenced traits in juveniles of K. perfectus. Here we report on material from a juvenile specimen of K. perfectus from the Petrified Forest Member (Norian) of the Chinle Formation in the PEFO. This specimen is significant because it represents the highest known occurrence of the species within the PEFO, documents a rare occurrence of a juvenile specimen of a North American metoposaurid, and records a rare North American metoposaurid specimen that includes associated cranial and postcranial material. Additionally, the combination of cranial features diagnostic of K. perfectus and intercentra of proportions intermediate between K. perfectus and A. gregorii in this specimen raises questions about the utility of several characters for species discrimination in North American metoposaurids.

Representatives of the ancestral cyclolobin ammonoid Demarezites Ruzhencev (Cyclolobidae) are known from only a few localities in North America where they occur as rare faunal elements. Demarezites furnishi n. sp. is based on a single specimen from “Middle” Permian (Roadian) strata in the Meade Peak Member of the Phosphoria Formation in eastern Idaho. Several specimens of the closely comparable Demarezites n. sp., described herein, are known from the Pipeline Shale Member of the Brushy Canyon Formation in West Texas.

Museum and field restudy of Cryptolithus from all known geographic and stratigraphic occurrences in eastern North America shows that the principal variable character in this genus is the number of fringe pit arcs. Because this character varies within populations and even single individuals, it cannot be used to distinguish the earlier, typologically defined species of the genus. Instead, a neotype is designated here for the type species, Cryptolithus tessellatus Green, 1832, and morph designations are used for all pit arc variants. Over the time span considered, the species increased the number of pit arcs, but the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms responsible cannot be identified with certainty.
