Kribi is a seaside town that welcomes thousands of tourists each year. However, the poor sanitation condition of its beaches along the Atlantic coast is not without risk for visitors. In this study, we used the formol-ether concentration technique to identify and quantify larvae or eggs of intestinal helminths in waters of three regularly visited Kribi beaches (Mpalla, Ngoyè, and Mboamanga). Results revealed that all identified larvae and eggs were cestodes (Hymenolepis nana) and nematodes (Strongyloides sp., Ascaris sp., Ancylostoma duodenale and Trichuris trichiura). All the helminth eggs and larvae showed high abundance at low tide during rainy seasons. Ancylostoma duodenale eggs, totally absent at Mpalla, were densely present at low tide at Ngoyè (301 ± 15 eggs/L). Trichuris trichiura eggs showed the lowest abundance (0 to 62 eggs/L) at all sites. Abiotic variables indicated that waters at the various beaches were basic (pH: 8.75–9.77), generally warmer (32.44°C at Mpalla in the Short Rainy Season), more oxygenated at low tide, and moderately mineralized at high tide. Positive and significant correlations were observed at Ngoyè at low tide between Strongyloides sp. larvae and dissolved oxygen (P ˂ 0.05); and between Ancylostoma duodenale eggs and temperature (P ˂ 0.05). The overall results indicated that the beaches studied are subjected to fecal pollution. This pollution is more accentuated during low tides than during high tides. Depending on tidal movements, swimmers risk exposure to helminth eggs and larvae known to be responsible for gastroenteritis.

A morphological study of adult liver flukes and eggs from sheep in a human fascioliasis endemic zone in the Northern Bolivian Altiplano showed that they belong to the species Fasciola hepatica. An exhaustive morphometric comparison with a F. hepatica population from Spanish sheep was made using image analysis and an allometric model: (y2m - y2)]#x002F;y2 = c[(y1m - y1)/y1]b, where y1 = body surface or body length, y2 = one of the measurements analysed, y1m, y2m = maximum values towards which y1 and y2 respectively tend, and c, b = constants. Only slight allometric differences in worms were observed despite the geographic distance between both Spanish and Bolivian sheep populations and the very high altitude of the Bolivian Altiplano.

The type species of the genus Epacrolaimus, Epacrolaimus declinatoaculeatus, is studied from the re-examination of type material of Aporcelaimus vorax, its junior synonym, and the observation of several Iberian populations and a few Iranian specimens. Morphologically, it displays a recognizable morphological pattern characterized by, among other features, the incurved nature of its odontostyle aperture, presence of perioral liplets or lobes, lip region 24–31 μm wide, odontostyle 21–25 μm long and comparatively anterior location of S2N pharyngeal gland nuclei. Nevertheless, variations in some morphological traits (vagina shape and tail shape) and in several morphometrics (body length, uterus length, vulva position, tail length and spicule length) are also noted. Sequences of D2–D3 domains of the 28S rDNA, 18S rDNA and COI mtDNA were obtained from several Iberian populations. Their analyses, in particular those from D2–D3 sequences, revealed the existence of a highly supported clade ((Epacrolaimus + Sectonema) + Metaporcelaimus), with a closer relationship between Epacrolaimus and Palaearctic populations of Sectonema, whereas the remaining aporcelaimid genera occupied placements in other clades. These results are discussed, with especial emphasis on the intricate separation of Epacrolaimus and Sectonema, which display significantly different protruding stomatal structure in spite of their close evolutionary relationship as derived from molecular trees.

The spirurid nematode Thubunaea schukurovi Annaev, 1973 (Physalopteridae) is redescribed by means of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy from Ablepharus chernovi collected in Çamlıyayla, Turkey. This is the first record of the species from this host and the first record of the genus Thubunaea from Turkey. The taxonomic status of the species of the genus Thubunaea from the Palaeacrtic and Indomalayan realms is reviewed based on their original morphological descriptions; as a result, Thubunaea dessetae Barus & Tenora, 1976, a parasite of Saara hardwickii (Gray) (Agamidae) in Afghanistan, is transferred to the genus Pseudabbreviata as Pseudabbreviata dessetae (Barus & Tenora, 1976) n. comb. Several species described in India, that is, Thubunaea singhi Deshmukh, 1969 and Thubunaea brooki Deshmukh, 1969, both from Hemidactylus brookii Gray (Gekkonidae), and Thubunaea aurangabadensis Deshmukh, 1969 and Thubunaea syedi Deshmukh, 1969, both from Hemidactylus giganteus Stoliczka, are considered members of the genus Physalopteroides; therefore, the following new combinations are proposed: Physalopteroides singhi, Physalopteroides brooki, Physalopteroides aurangabadensis and Physalopteroides syedi. Thubunaea hemidactylae Oshmarin & Demshin, 1972 from Hemidactylus frenatus Duméril & Bibron in Vietnam is considered a member of the genus Physalopteroides as P. hemidactylae (Oshmarin & Demshin, 1972) n. comb.

1. The infective stage larvae of Bunostomum trigonocephalum (Rudolphi, 1808) penetrate the intact skin and undergo skin-lung migration in the mouse and skin-lung-intestine migration in the guineapig. After percutaneous infection in guineapigs, they moult in the lungs to the fourth stage and to the fifth stage in the intestine. Relatively few of them undergo this partial development in the guineapig and they are stunted in growth.

2. In the abnormal hosts, the penetrating larvae cause extensive tissue disorganisation. The histopathology of the skin and lungs is described. There is a cellular reaction to the parasites.

3. In guineapigs, the infective stage larvae reach the lungs after per os infection but they are few in number do no persist for more than six days.

Excretory–secretory (ES) products of nematodes and other helminths are the first molecules to interact with cell surfaces and soluble proteins within the host. In the present study, ES products of the filarial nematode Onchocerca ochengi were investigated as a model for Onchocerca volvulus, the causative agent of river blindness. These products were collected from adult and larval stages in vitro over a period of 7 days, to compare their immunological recognition in cattle and human sera, infected with species of Onchocerca. From the 156 sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) ES products or extracts, protein bands showed different patterns between female and male products. A comparison of antibody recognition of the different ES products by sera from infected cattle and humans, when analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), revealed a relatively higher reactivity of the female somatic extract to human and cattle sera compared to ES products of both genders. Nevertheless, similar reactivity of the O. ochengi male and female ES products to human and cattle sera was noticed. As a result, the interaction of ES products with the surface of the host and immune system often led to host responses, including the generation of antibodies. The O. ochengi ES products are therefore good sources of potential immunogenic proteins. The identification of these ES products is in progress, with the aim of developing vaccine candidates against human onchocerciasis.

Urban rodents are associated with parasites and pathogens, which present health risks for humans, but information on factors related to parasite and pathogen infection in rodents in cities of Latin America is scarce. This study analyzes the hosts, host community structure and environmental characteristics of parasite and pathogen fauna present in the three species of urban rodents in an urban area of South America. Rodents were captured seasonally in seven different neighborhoods. Digestive tracts were dissected under stereoscopic microscopy and feces were processed using a sedimentation technique. Protozoa and bacteria were detected through polymerase chain reaction and indirect immunofluorescence techniques. In Rattus norvegicus, Rattus rattus and Mus musculus, ten helminths, three protozoa and two bacteria were found. Six were zoonotic: Toxoplasma gondii; Hymenolepis diminuta; Rodentolepis nana; Strobilocercus fasciolaris; Leptospira borgpetersenii; and Leptospira interrogans. The parasite and pathogen infections were influenced by the host species, the host community structure, the season, and the presence of streams in the neighborhood. Urban rodents may be the infection source of many zoonotic diseases and it is important to generate public policies for this problem. This study is one example of the situation of many cities of Latin America, where peripheral neighborhoods are growing dramatically.

Kapsulotaenia tidswelli is a proteocephalidean cestode that utilizes varanid lizards as definitive hosts. Fresh specimens of this cestode were observed with endogenous red pigmentation in the neck region that disappeared rapidly if specimens were not preserved in glutaraldehyde. The ultrastructural characteristics of the red pigment, which are described, suggest it is a carotenoid. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed a close relationship between K. tidswelli and other species of Kapsulotaenia for which sequence information is available. There is thus no reason to consider that the red pigmentation is because K. tidswelli is atypical, and it is proposed the carotenoids are likely to be associated with the diet of its varanid host.

In a flock of 20 ewes naturally infected with those parasites of sheep most common in Greece, and kept indoors during the whole trial, oxfendazole at the dose rate of approximately 2–9 and 2–8 mg/kg body-weight was tested as a 4 g bolus containing 112 mg active ingredient and a 2–265% suspension. The evaluation of its efficacy was based on the necropsy findings which were also supported by faecal egg counts. No differences in efficacy were noticed between the two formulations of the drug. Both bolus and suspension proved to be 100% effective against Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia circumcincta, Trichostrongylus axei, T. colubriformis and Chabertia ovina. The efficacy against Cooperia oncophora, Nematodirus spathiger, Bunostomum trigonocephalum, Oesophagostomum columbianum and Moniezia expansa could not be evaluated, because these species, though not found in any of the treated animals, were found in fewer than three controls.

Yakusu lies on the North bank of the river Congo twelve miles below Stanleyville and the termination of the rapids of Stanley Falls. One of largest tributaries, the Lindi, joins the main stream just above the settlement.

Mature hens were induced to moult and were subsequently found to be resistant to both primary and secondary infections of Raillietina cesticillus, whereas non-moulting birds that continued to lay were susceptible to primary and secondary infections.

1. To determine the upper limit of the abomasal worm infestation of healthy lambs was the main object of the investigation. The results show that a lamb slaughtered fat before or shortly after weaning and therefore presumably a healthy lamb, may contain up to 2,100 Haemonchus and up to 4,670 Ostertagia.

2. Infestation with Haemonchus conlortus is negligible until August.

3. Infestation with Ostertagia remains almost steady from early May until mid-September.

4. Infestation with Trichostrongylus axei occurs from May until mid-September, but is never a heavy one.

5. The evidence suggests, but does not prove, that in mid-summer there is a wide difference in the infestation of single and twin lambs.

6. The results, so far as they affect the seasonality of infestation are, strictly speaking, applicable only to the flock of the Duthie Experimental Stock Farm, but are probably true for the North-East area of Scotland.

In the routine examination of stray dogs in a country area near Shanghai, a large percentage were found to be infected with Dirofilaria immitis. The microfilariae were easily found in blood films stained with Leishman's or Giemsa's stain. In some cases only a moderately heavy infection was found, but in some hyper-infection was present. (See fig.)

In cats infected with normal, or irradiated, infective (L3) larvae of Brugia pahangi counterimmunoelectro-phoresis revealed the presence of antibody to soluble antigens derived from microfilariae, adults and infective larvae of the same parasite. Infected cats with a persistently high to moderate microfilaraemia gave positive precipitin reactions to L3, microfilarial and adult worm antigens. Cats which had become amicrofilaraemic had antibody to L3 and microfilarial antigens but not to adult worm antigen. Serum from cats inoculated with irradiated L3 larvae produced a precipitin reaction only to the L3 antigen.

A study of larval development of Schistosoma haematobium in the snail Planorbarius metidjensis infected by transplanted sporocysts showed that some embryos in daughter sporocysts have characters intermediate between cercariae and sporocysts. These embryos are interpreted to be nearly mature cercariae that have partially reverted to be secondary sporocysts. If this explanation is correct, it would mean that the embryos which develop within trematode daughter sporocysts can differentiate either into cercariae or into a new generation of sporocysts, but originate from a single type of germinal cell.

Gould (1970) stated that “asyet,roentgenographic technics cannot demonstrate trichinae in skeletal muscle”. We have found no report of X-ray film demonstration of Trichinella cysts in muscle in the literature to date. Rogers et al. (1975) used the technique of xeroradiography to show living and calcified filarial worms (Brugia pahangi) in the infected lymphatics of cats and we have had an opportunity to use this method to examine calcified Trichinella cysts in infected muscle.

Third-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus costaricensis were cultured to young adult stages in Waymouth's chemically defined medium MB 752/l, which comprises higher concentrations of the essential components histidine, lysine, methionine, tryptophan, choline chloride and glucose than various other chemically defined media. The present study has shown that choline chloride and tryptophan are required at relatively higher concentrations for worm development than those of the other essential components.

One male and four females were recovered from the anterior part of the intestine of the house rat, Rattus rattus kijabius in Kenya. They were found to belong to an undescribed species of trichostrongyloid for which the name Longistriata (Brevispiculoides) kenyae is proposed. I wish to thank my friend Mr. W. F. J. Five Swainson's spurfowl collected in Free State Province, South Africa, were examined for helminth parasites, and the nematodes Acuaria gruveli, Cyrnea parroti, Gongylonema congolense, Subulura dentigera, Subulura suctoria and a new Tetrameres species were recovered. Their respective prevalence was 100, 20, 80, 20, 20 and 20%. These nematodes are all new parasite records for Swainson's spurfowl, and Acuaria gruveli constitutes a new geographical record as well. A single specimen of Cyrnea eurycerca was found in an Orange River francolin, representing a new host and geographical record for this parasite. The new species, for which the name Tetrameres swainsonii is proposed, can be differentiated from its congeners by a combination of the following characters of males: two rows of body spines, a single spicule which is 1152–1392 μm long, and eight pairs of caudal spines arranged in two ventral and two lateral rows of four spines each. The single female has the globular shape typical of the genus.
