For the Andes Cordillera, where observed mass-balance records are sparse, long-term glacier velocity measurements potentially represent a useful tool for assessing glacier health. Utilising manual and automatic feature-tracking techniques applied to Corona, Landsat and ASTER satellite imagery, this paper presents surface velocity fluctuations for Glaciar Universidad between 1967 and 1969, and 1985 and 2015, the longest such time series available for the Andes Cordillera, outside Patagonia. This time series reveals an increase in the surface velocities of the main glacier trunk between 1967 and 1987 (~90%) followed by a deceleration between 1987 and 2015 (~80%), with ice velocities observed between 2014 and 2015 possibly representing a 48 a low. In response to the surface velocity fluctuations, the glacier front advanced between 1985 and 1992 (cumulative change of 137 ± 14 m), and again to a lesser magnitude during the 1996–98 and 2004–08 periods. Although having exhibited possible surge behaviour during the 1940s, the synchrony of the glacier changes presented for Glaciar Universidad with those reported for nearby glaciers, suggests that this glacier is responding to climatic trends. If the above scenario is true, the results indicate a general pattern of increasingly negative glacier mass-balance conditions since the late 1980s.

The only complete inventory of New Zealand glaciers was based on aerial photography starting in 1978. While there have been partial updates using 2002 and 2009 satellite data, most glaciers are still represented by the 1978 outlines in contemporary global glacier databases. The objective of this project is to establish an updated glacier inventory for New Zealand. We have used Landsat 8 OLI satellite imagery from February and March 2016 for delineating clean glaciers using a semi-automatic band ratio method and debris-covered glaciers using a maximum likelihood classification. The outlines have been checked against Sentinel-2 MSI data, which have a higher resolution. Manual post processing was necessary due to misclassifications (e.g. lakes, clouds), mapping in shadowed areas, and combining the clean and debris-covered parts into single glaciers. New Zealand glaciers cover an area of 794 ± 34 km2 in 2016 with a debris-covered area of 10%. Of the 2918 glaciers, seven glaciers are >10 km2 while 71% is <0.1 km2. The debris cover on those largest glaciers is >40%. Only 15 glaciers are located on the North Island. For a selection of glaciers, we were able to calculate the area reduction between the 1978 and 2016 inventories.

The roughness of the bed beneath ice streams exerts an important control on their dynamics. Here the first in-depth analysis of roughness beneath the Greenland ice sheet is presented. Much of the interior is underlain by a smooth bed, while the margins are much rougher; this is particularly pronounced in the east where more mountainous topography dominates and fast-flow features are laterally constrained in deep narrow valleys. In contrast, fast flow in the west is much less laterally constrained and areas of high roughness are less extensive and pronounced. It is proposed that there is a major geological control on the distribution of bed variability since a significant thrust-fault coincides approximately with the boundary between rough terrain in the east and the smooth central region. Furthermore there is an abrupt change in roughness approximately coinciding with the crossing of this fault line. This suggests a limiting factor on the extent of fast flow in the east, which is lacking in the west. The size of many glaciers draining Greenland makes their local bed conditions difficult to determine with great confidence. However, the much larger Petermann Glacier lies in a deep trough characterized by a smooth bed that extends some distance into the ice sheet. The smooth bed may be due to deformable marine sediments which facilitate faster flow, although smoothing could also result from ice dynamics and subglacial erosion. That the smooth bed of Petermann Glacier extends some considerable distance raises concerns about the possible stability of this feature, and perhaps others in Greenland too.

Lake-calving Yakutat Glacier in southeast Alaska, USA, is undergoing rapid thinning and terminus retreat. We use a simplified glacier model to evaluate its future mass loss. In a first step we compute glacier-wide mass change with a surface mass-balance model, and add a mass loss component due to ice flux through the calving front. We then use an empirical elevation change curve to adjust for surface elevation change of the glacier and finally use a flotation criterion to account for terminus retreat due to frontal ablation. Surface mass balance is computed on a daily timescale; elevation change and retreat is adjusted on a decadal scale. We use two scenarios to simulate future mass change: (1) keeping the current (2000–10) climate and (2) forcing the model with a projected warming climate. We find that the glacier will disappear in the decade before 2110 or 2070 under constant or warming climates, respectively. For the first few decades, the glacier can maintain its current thinning rates by retreating and associated loss of high-ablating, low-elevation areas. However, once higher elevations have thinned substantially, the glacier can no longer counteract accelerated thinning by retreat and mass loss accelerates, even under constant climate conditions. We find that it would take a substantial cooling of 1.5°C to reverse the ongoing retreat. It is therefore likely that Yakutat Glacier will continue its retreat at an accelerating rate and disappear entirely.

A model subglacial drainage system, coupled to an ice-dammed reservoir that receives a time-varying meltwater input, is described and analysed. In numerical experiments an ice-marginal lake drains through a subglacial channel, producing periodic floods, and fills with meltwater at a rate dependent on air temperature, which varies seasonally with a peak value of Tm. The analysis reveals regions of Tm parameter space corresponding to ‘mode locking’, where flood repeat time is independent of Tm; resonance, where decreasing Tm counter-intuitively increases flood size; and chaotic dynamics, where flood cycles are sensitive to initial conditions, never repeat and exhibit phase-space mixing. Bifurcations associated with abrupt changes in flood size and timing within the year separate these regions. This is the first time these complex dynamics have been displayed by a glaciohydraulic model and these findings have implications for our understanding of ice-marginal lakes, moulins and subglacial lakes.

Glaciers are an important element of the environment in the source regions of the Yangtze and Yellow rivers on the Tibetan Plateau. Using Geographical Information System techniques, we have studied changes in the location of glacier margins in two areas: the Geladandong area in the headwaters of the Yangtze, and the A’nyêmaqên Shan mountains in the headwaters of the Yellow River. Marginal positions during the Little Ice Age (LIA) maximum, in 1969 in the Geladandong area, in 1966 in the A’nyêmaqên Shan, and in 2000 in both areas, were determined using aerial photographs, satellite images, topographical maps and digital elevation models. Extrapolating the results to the entire source regions of the Yangtze and Yellow rivers, we estimate that the total glacierized area decreased about 1.7% between 1969 and 2000 in the Geladandong area and about 17% between 1966 and 2000 in the A’nyêmaqên Shan. Glaciers were stable or advanced slightly between 1969 and 1995 in the Geladandong area, and between 1966 and 1981 in the A’nyêmaqên Shan, but have retreated since the mid-1990s in the former and since the 1980s in the latter. Significant increases in summer air temperature and decreases in annual precipitation are the causes of the present retreat. As a consequence of the retreat, water storage, as ice, in the Yangtze and Yellow river drainages is decreasing by 65–70 × 106 m3 a−1.

Information about the ice volume stored in glaciers is of high importance for sustainable water management in many arid regions of Central Asia. Several methods to estimate the ice volume exist. However, none of them take the specific characteristics of flat terminus debris-covered glaciers into account. We present a method for deriving spatially-distributed ice thickness for debris-covered dendritic glaciers, which are common not only in Central Tien Shan but also in several other mountain ranges in High Asia. The method relies on automatically generated branch lines, observed surface velocities and surface topographic parameters as basic input. Branch lines were generated using Thiessen polygons and Dijkstra's path algorithm. Ice thicknesses for four debris-covered glaciers – South Inylchek, Kaindy, Tomur and Koxkar glaciers – have been estimated along the branch line network solving the equation of laminar flow. For Koxkar and South Inylchek glaciers, respectively, maximum thicknesses of ~250 and 380 m were estimated. These results differ by ~50 m compared with GPR measurements with an uncertainty for the debris-covered parts of ~40%. Based on geodetic mass balances, we estimate that the investigated glaciers lost between 6 and 28% of their volume from 1975 to the early 2000s.

A multitude of extensive layers have been observed by radio-echo soundings in Greenland. By comparison with the stable isotope profile from Camp Century it is found that layering in the lop of the ice has been formed in the period since the last glaciation. Radio-echo layers observed at greater depths in central Greenland may have been created in the period of the interstadials and further down possibly in the period prior to the last glaciation. Further investigations are needed to prove this.

A water table appearing every summer where the ice begins, at a gerpth of approximately 30 m, accelerates the transformation of firn into ice during the summer (80% of the ice formed every year appears in less than 2 months). The ice formed in this way contains from 0 to 0.6% water. The average water content increases gradually with the gerpth because of the heat of gerformation. But, near bedrock, between 180 and 187 m, the permeability of the blue ice is such that the water content drops (0.3% as compared to 1.3% between 160 and 180 m).

From a gerpth of 33 m, a foliation of sedimentary origin gradually gervelops in the ice. Its dip increases regularly to a gerpth of 145 m. At 145 m it jumps sudgernly freom 20° to 40°, then at 170 m freom 40° to 65°, which can be explained by old modifications in the bergschrund. This foliation disappears near bedrock (180-187 m), where there are no bubbles in the ice.

The average size of an ice crystal increases slowly in the firn, shows seasonal fluctuations between 30 and 50 m, then jumps freom a diameter of 1 or 2 mm to 10 or 20 mm between 50 and 80 m. Between 180 and 187 m, the ice is mager of large crystals (3-10 cm diameter; the figure, however, is probably inexact due to a recrystallization of the samples).

The very strong sub-vertical orientation of the optic axes of the firn crystals disappears quickly, and freom 66 m on, in ice with large crystals, a fabric of multiple maxima appears (generally, 3 or 4 directions, forming a triangle or a rhombus). On the other hand, in the small crystals that form bands parallel to the plane of foliation, only one direction of preferential orientation can be seen, or two close to one another. Crystals of intermediate size (10 to 50 mm) generally have two directions of preferred orientation at an angle of approximately 50° to one another. No matter how big the crystals are, the angle between the most common c-axis orientation and the vertical does not change freom 60 to 170 m gerpth.

During a motion event on Unteraargletscher, Bernese Alps, Switzerland, in spring 1996, surface velocities were measured up to eight times a day at four different locations along the central flowline using global positioning system equipment. In addition, accumulated vertical strains over the uppermost 50 and 100 m were measured at a location where the total ice thickness is 260 m. The motion event was accompanied by high horizontal and vertical strain rates as compared to annual mean values. A reversal in strain regime was observed, with horizontal strain rates changing to extension while vertical strain rates became compressive. This strain-rate reversal coincided, within the temporal resolution of the data, with a maximum in vertical ice displacement at the surface.Within a day, variations in vertical strain from 0.04 a−1 to −0.06 a−1 were observed over the uppermost 100 m. Vertical stretching is estimated to have contributed to at least 20% of the anomalous vertical ice movement at the surface. There were significant differences between measured longitudinal strain, averaged over a distance corresponding to a few ice thicknesses, and measured vertical strain. In spring 1997 a similar, but more detailed, set of measurements was collected at the same measuring site, and vertical strain rates were found to vary non-uniformly with depth, with the largest values closest to the surface.

Information on snow-cover stability is important for predicting avalanche danger. Traditionally, stability evaluation is based on manual observations of snow stratigraphy and stability tests, which are time-consuming. The SnowMicroPen (SMP) is a high-resolution, constant-speed penetrometer to measure penetration resistance. We have analysed the resistance signal to derive snow stability. The proposed stability algorithm was developed by comparing 68 SMP force–distance profiles with the corresponding manual profiles, including stability tests. The algorithm identifies a set of four potentially weak layers by taking into account changes in structure and rupture strength of microstructural elements that make up snow layers as derived from the SMP signal. In 90% of the cases, one of the four potentially weak layers proposed by the algorithm coincided with the failure layer observed in the stability test. To select the critical layer from the four potential weaknesses was more difficult. With fully automatic picking of the critical layer, agreement with the failure layer observed in the stability test was reached in 60% of the cases. To derive a stability classification, we analysed weak-layer as well as slab properties. These predictor variables allow the SMP signal to be classified into two stability classes, poor and fair-to-good, with an accuracy of ∼75% when compared with observed stability. The SMP, in combination with the proposed algorithm, shows high potential for providing snow-cover stability information at high resolution in time and space.

Each summer, surface melting of the margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet exposes a distinctive visible stratigraphy that is related to past variability in subaerial dust deposition across the accumulation zone and subsequent ice flow toward the margin. Here we map this surface stratigraphy along the northern margin of the ice sheet using mosaicked Sentinel-2 multispectral satellite imagery from the end of the 2019 melt season and finer-resolution WorldView-2/3 imagery for smaller regions of interest. We trace three distinct transitions in apparent dust concentration and the top of a darker basal layer. The three dust transitions have been identified previously as representing late-Pleistocene climatic transitions, allowing us to develop a coarse margin chronostratigraphy for northern Greenland. Substantial folding of late-Pleistocene stratigraphy is observed but uncommon. The oldest conformal surface-exposed ice in northern Greenland is likely located adjacent to Warming Land and may be up to ~55 thousand years old. Basal ice is commonly exposed hundreds of metres from the ice margin and may indicate a widespread frozen basal thermal state. We conclude that the ice margin across northern Greenland offers multiple opportunities to recover paleoclimatically distinct ice relative to previously studied regions in southwestern Greenland.

The physical requirements for proposed frazil-ice nucleation theories are reviewed in the light of recent observations on frazil-ice formation. It is concluded that spontaneous heterogeneous nucleation in a thin supercooled surface layer of water is not a viable mechanism for frazil-ice nucleation. Efforts to observe crystal multiplication by border ice have not been successful. The mass-exchange mechanism proposed by Osterkamp and others (1974) has been generalized to include splashing, wind spray, bubble bursting, evaporation, and material that originates at a distance from the stream (e.g. snow, frost, ice particles, cold organic material, and cold soil particles). It is shown that these mass-exchange processes can account for frazil-ice nucleation under a wide range of physical and meteorological conditions. It is suggested that secondary nucleation may be responsible for large frazil-ice concentrations in streams and rivers.

This study clarifies changes in the chemical forms of microparticles during Termination I, the period of drastic climate change between the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the Holocene. We determine the chemical forms of individual water-soluble microparticles through micro-Raman spectroscopy and compare the relative frequencies of different types with the ion concentrations in melted ice. Micro-Raman spectroscopy shows that Na2SO4·10H2O and MgSO4·11H2O are abundant in Holocene ice, while CaSO4·2H2O and other salts are abundant in LGM ice. Further, the number of CaSO4·2H2O particles is strongly correlated with the concentration of Ca2+ during Termination I. Taken together, the evidence strongly suggests that most of the Ca2+ exists as CaSO4·2H2O. The different compositions of microparticles from the Holocene and LGM can be explained by ion balance arguments.

We estimate Antarctic ice-flow balance velocities, which are the average speeds that ice must flow downslope through a volume assuming that there are equal amounts of ice entering and leaving the ice volume. We use the OSU (Ohio State University) digital elevation model of Antarctica, recent ice accumulation rate data and the BEDMAP ice-thickness data compilations for Antarctica to characterize the physical properties of the ice sheet that are included in the balance-velocity calculation. We adapt a flux algorithm from the hydrology literature that enables us to calculate the flux distribution from any cell in any order. Flux from one cell to its neighbors is partitioned as a simple function of surface slope direction. Digitized flow-stripe directions from satellite images minimize errors in flow direction where surface slopes are low or complex. We estimate errors in balance velocity arising from errors in the data and show semi-quantitatively how properties of the algorithm bias the balance-velocity result. We find a favorable comparison between our model and observed velocity data as well as the balance-velocity patterns reported by other researchers.

Bending shear was observed to produce nearly vertical shear bands in a calving ice wall standing on dry land on Deception Island (lat. 63.0°S., long. 60.6 W.), and slabs calved straight downward when shear rupture occurred along these shear bands (Hughes, 1989). A formula for the calving rate was developed from the Deception Island data, and we have attempted to justify generalizing this formula to include ice walls standing along beaches or in water. These are environments in which a wave-washed groove develops along the base of the ice wall or along a water line above the base. The rate of wave erosion provides an alternative mechanism for controlling the calving rate in these environments. We have determined that the rate at which bending creep produces nearly vertical shear bands, along which shear rupture occurs, controls the calving rate in all environments. Shear rupture occurs at a calving shear stress of about 1 bar. Our results justify using the calving formula to compute the calving rate of ice walls in computer models of ice-sheet dynamics. This is especially important in simulating retreat of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets during the last deglaciation, when marine and lacustrine environments were common along retreating ice margins. These margins would have been ice walls standing along beaches or in water, because floating ice shelves are not expected in the ablation zone of retreating ice sheets.

Ice stream discharge responds to a balance between gravity, basal friction and lateral drag. Appreciable viscous heating occurs in shear margins between ice streams and adjacent slow-moving ice ridges, altering the temperature-dependent viscosity distribution that connects lateral drag to marginal strain rates and ice stream velocity. Warmer ice deforms more easily and accommodates faster flow, whereas cold ice supplied from ice ridges drives advective cooling that counteracts viscous heating. Here, we present a two-dimensional (three velocity component), steady-state model designed to explore the thermal controls on ice stream shear margins. We validate our treatment through comparison with observed velocities for Bindschadler Ice Stream and verify that calculated temperatures are consistent with results from previous studies. Sweeping through a parameter range that encompasses conditions representative of ice streams in Antarctica, we show that modeled steady-state velocity has a modest response to different choices in forcing up until temperate zones develop in the shear margins. When temperate zones are present, velocity is much more sensitive to changes in forcing. We identify key scalings for the emergence of temperate conditions in our idealized treatment that can be used to identify where thermo-mechanical feedbacks influence the evolution of the ice sheet.

Modulation of the flow of Rutford Ice Stream, Antarctica, has been reported previously at semi-diurnal, diurnal, fortnightly and semi-annual periods. A model that includes non-linear response to tidal forcing has been shown to fit closely observations at fortnightly frequencies. Here we examine that model further and test its fit at a larger set of observed frequencies, including the large semi-annual displacement. We show analytically that, when forced by major tidal terms, the model (using a basal shear stress exponent m = 3) predicts several discrete response periods from 4 hours to 0.5 years. We examine a 1.5 year GPS record from Rutford Ice Stream and find that the model, when forced by a numerical tide model, is able to reproduce the reported semi-annual signal. We confirm that about 5% of the mean flow is due solely to the (m = 3) non-linear response to tidally varying basal shear stress. Our best-fitting set of model parameters is similar to those originally reported using a much shorter data record, although with noticeably improved fit, suggesting these parameters are robust. We find that m ≈ 3 fits the data well, but that m ≈ 2 does not. Furthermore, we find that a small variation in flow over the 18.6 year lunar node tide cycle is expected. Fits to semi-diurnal and diurnal terms remain relatively poor, possibly due to viscoelastic effects that are not included in the model and reduced GPS data quality at some discrete periods. For comparison, we predict the response of Bindschadler Ice Stream and Lambert Glacier and show, given identical model parameters, a similar response pattern but with ∼1–2 orders of magnitude smaller variability; these may still be measurable and hence useful in testing the applicability of this model to other locations.

The plane-strain fracture toughness of fresh-water ice was measured at various loading rates and temperatures. The fracture toughness of ice decreases as loading rate increases and as the test temperature approaches the melting point. The presence of liquid water seems to reduce the fracture toughness. The fracture toughness for crack arrest is slightly lower than the static fracture toughness.

Simple models of glacier volume evolution are important in understanding features of glacier response to climate change, due to the scarcity of data adequate for running more complex models on a global scale. Two quantities of interest in a glacier's response to climate changes are its response time and its volume sensitivity to changes in the equilibrium line altitude (ELA). We derive a simplified, computationally inexpensive model of glacier volume evolution based on a block model with volume–area–length scaling. After analyzing its steady-state properties, we apply the model to each mountain glacier worldwide and estimate regionally differentiated response times and sensitivities to ELA changes. We use a statistical method from the family of global sensitivity analysis methods to determine the glacier quantities, geometric and climatic, that most influence the model output. The response time is dominated by the climatic setting reflected in the mass-balance gradient in the ablation zone, followed by the surface slope, while volume sensitivity is mainly affected by glacier size, followed by the surface slope.
