A steady-state analysis of an M/G/1 queue with a finite capacity (K) and a finite population (N) of customers is given. The queue size distribution in this M/G/1/K/N system can be derived from the known queue size distribution in the corresponding M/G/1//N system. The system throughput, the mean response time, and the blocking probability are then calculated. The joint distributions of the queue size and the remaining service times are used to obtain the distributions of the unfinished work in the service facility and the waiting time of an accepted customer.

A two-parameter Ehrenfest urn model is derived according to the approach taken by Karlin and McGregor [7] where Krawtchouk polynomials are used. Furthermore, formulas for the mean passage times of finite homogeneous Markov chains with general tridiagonal transition matrices are given. In the special case of the Ehrenfest model they have quite a different structure as compared with those of Blom [2] or Kemperman [9].

Burn-in is a procedure used for eliminating weak components in a mixed population. In this paper we focus on general mixed populations. Three types of results are established. First, it is shown that any mixed population displays a type of monotonicity property which is appropriate for burn-in. Second, it is shown that if, asymptotically, components have constant failure rates, then the mixed population will also asymptotically have a constant failure rate and this will correspond to the rate of the strongest subpopulation of the mixture. Finally, it is shown for a reasonable cost function, that if one mixture distribution dominates another in a strong sense, the resulting mixture of the dominant distribution will have larger optimal burn-in time.

In this paper we introduce the concept of repair replacement. Repair replacement is a maintenance policy in which items are preventively maintained when a certain time has elapsed since their last repair. This differs from age replacement where a certain amount of time has elapsed since the last replacement. If the last repair was a complete repair, repair replacement is essentially the same as age replacement. It is in the case of minimal repair that these two policies differ. We make comparison between various types of policies in order to determine when and under which condition one type of policy is better than another.

Let denote a rectangular lattice in the Euclidean plane E2, generated by (a × b) rectangles. In this paper we consider the probability that a random ellipse having main axes of length 2α and 2ß, with intersects . We regard the lattice as the union of two orthogonal sets and of equidistant lines and evaluate the probability that the random ellipse intersects or . Moreover, we consider the dependence structure of the events that the ellipse intersects or . We study further the case when the main axes of the ellipse are parallel to the lines of the lattice and satisfy 2ß = min (a, b) < 2α = max (a, b). In this case, the probability of intersection is 1, and there exist almost surely two perpendicular segments in within the ellipse. We evaluate the distribution function, density, mean and variance of the length of these segments. We conclude with a generalization of this problem in three dimensions.

Interacting particle systems provide an attractive framework for modelling the growth and spread of biological populations and diseases. One problem with their use in applications is that in most cases the existing information about their critical values and equilibrium densities is too crude to be useful. In this paper we describe a method for estimating these quantities that does not require very much computer time and produces fairly accurate results.

This paper is devoted to the study of a stationary G/G/1 queue in which work input is gradually injected into the system and the work load is processed at unit rate. First, assuming that the input process is stationary, the key formula for the stationary distribution of work in system is derived by appeal to the waiting time of the associated regular G/G/1 queue. The main contribution of this paper is the derivation of Laplace-Stieltjes transforms (LSTs) for the stationary distributions of work in system and related random variables in terms of integrations with respect to a waiting time distribution of the associated regular queue. The results are exemplified by giving explicit formulas for the LST of total work for M/Ek/1 and M/H2/1. The results generalize the results of Pan et al. (1991) for the M/M/1 gradual input queue.

n unreliable machines are maintained by m repairmen. Assuming exponentially distributed up-time and repair time we find the optimal policy to allocate the repairmen to the failed machines in order to stochastically minimize the time until all machines work. Considering only one repairman, we find the optimal policy to maximize the expected total discount time that machines work. We find the optimal policy for the cases where the up-time and repair time are exponentially distributed or identically arbitrarily distributed up-times and increasing failure rate distribution repair times.

The first-order autoregressive semi-Mittag-Leffler (SMLAR(1)) process is introduced and its properties are studied. As an illustration, we discuss the special case of the first-order autoregressive Mittag-Leffler (MLAR(1)) process.

We consider the Klimov model for an open network of two types of jobs. Jobs of type i arrive at station i, have processing times that are exponentially distributed with parameter µi, and when processed either go on to station j with probability pij, or depart the network with probability pi0. Costs are charged at a rate that depends on the number of jobs of the two types in the system. It is shown that for arbitrary arrival processes the policy that gives priority to those jobs for whom the rate of change of the cost function is greatest minimizes the expected cost rate at every time t. This result is stronger than the Klimov result in two ways: arrival processes are arbitrary, and the minimization is at each time t. But the result holds for only two types.

The class of new better than used in convex ordering (NBUC) is shown to be closed under formation of parallel systems with independent and identically distributed components.

We consider the problem of routing jobs to parallel queues with identical exponential servers and unequal finite buffer capacities. Service rates are state-dependent and non-decreasing with respect to queue lengths. We establish the extremal properties of the shortest non-full queue (SNQ) and the longest non-full queue (LNQ) policies, in systems with concave/convex service rates. Our analysis is based on the weak majorization of joint queue lengths which leads to stochastic orderings of critical performance indices. Moreover, we solve the buffer allocation problem, i.e. the problem of how to distribute a number of buffers among the queues. The two optimal allocation schemes are also ‘extreme', in the sense of capacity balancing. Some extensions are also discussed.

Past work relating to the computation of time-dependent state probabilities in M/M/1 queueing systems is reviewed, with emphasis on methods that avoid Bessel functions. A new series formula of Sharma [13] is discussed and its connection with traditional Bessel function series is established. An alternative new series is developed which isolates the steady-state component for all values of traffic intensity and which turns out to be computationally superior. A brief comparison of our formula, Sharma's formula, and a classical Bessel function formula is given for the computation time of the probability that an initially empty system is empty at time t later.

The skeleton of a (super-) critical Galton-Watson process with offspring mean 1 + r, r ≧ 0, and finite offspring variance, is considered. When r = 0 it is trivial. If r > 0 is small and the time unit is taken as α /r generations (α > 0) then the skeleton can be approximated by a Yule (linear pure birth) process of rate α. This approximation can be used to study the evolution of genetic types over a long period of time in an exponentially growing population.

We propose an AR(1) model that can be used to generate logistic processes. The proposed model has simple probability and correlation structure that can accommodate the full range of attainable correlation. The correlation structure and the joint distribution of the proposed model are given, as well as their conditional mean and variance.

A Markovian stochastic model for a system subject to random shocks is introduced. It is assumed that the shock arriving according to a Poisson process decreases the state of the system by a random amount. It is further assumed that the system is repaired by a repairman arriving according to another Poisson process if the state when he arrives is below a threshold α. Explicit expressions are deduced for the characteristic function of the distribution function of X(t), the state of the system at time t, and for the distribution function of X(t), if . The stationary case is also discussed.

In this article, we generalize results by Dimitrov and Khalil (1990), Khalil et al. (1991), and van Harn and Steutel (1991) and obtain some characterizations of the exponential and geometric laws.

It is shown that the convex polygons are uniquely determined (up to translation and reflection) by their covariograms. The covariogram can be represented by the ‘orientation-dependent chord length distribution', i.e. the distribution of the length of chords which are generated by random lines parallel to fixed directions. Thus the result contributes to answer Blaschke's question about the content of information comprised in chord length distributions.

The well-known Cameron–Martin formula allows us to calculate the mathematical expectation where Ws is a Wiener process. This paper extends this result to the case of piecewise continuous martingales. As a particular case the mathematical expectations of a functional of generalized Ornstein– Uhlenbeck processes and pure jump processes are calculated.

An optimal allocation of subsystems depending on the system structure and reliability ordering of inherent subsystem components is determined, in the presence of various external influences on the reliability of components in different locations. It is carried out with the help of L-superadditive functions and Schur-convex functions.
