The effect of ammonium ions on artificially imposed water flux and trans-root potential difference was studied in excised sunflower roots. Water movement through the root system decreased and the potential of the xylem sap became less negative with respect to the external medium as the ammonium ion concentration in the external medium increased. It is suggested that ammonium ions appeared to inhibit water uptake either wholly or partially through a general or specific blockage of root metabolism which reflected on the permeability of water through root membranes. The reduction in the trans-root potential was due to the effect of ammonium ions on the original trans-root potential of epidermal root cells. This may indicate that the site of water uptake inhibition lies within the root epidermis.

The effects of direct drilling, shallow cultivation and ploughing on the growth of winter cereals (wheat and oats) are reported for the first 4 years of long-term experiments on two non-calcareous clay soils (stagnogleys), representative of soils occupying a large proportion of the cereal growing area of the U.K. These 4 years have been characterized by extreme contrasts in rainfall and wetness of the soil.

On a Lawford series soil, with 35% clay, although the treatments affected average grain yields none of the differences was large. With additional nitrogen fertilizer, the yield after direct drilling was significantly heavier by 6% than after ploughing. On the Denchworth series, with 50% clay, 4 year average yields were also similar after direct drilling and ploughing, but in individual years the treatments had large effects. In two wet years grain yields after direct drilling were 89 and 82% of those after ploughing, but in another year they exceeded by 16% those after ploughing, where lodging had restricted grain filling. In the unusually dry season of 1975–6 yields of winter wheat after direct drilling exceeded those after ploughing (by 14 and 6% on the Lawford and Denchworth soils respectively) and this was attributed to greater availability of water and deeper rooting in the spring. In a year of heavy wheat yields (1977–8) about 10t/ha was achieved on both soils irrespective of the method of cultivation. In this year, after prolonged wet soil conditions in winter, the response to additional nitrogen fertilizer was greater after direct drilling and shallow cultivation than after ploughing.

The concentration of nitrogen in the crops tended to be smaller throughout the growing season after direct drilling than after ploughing, especially on the Denchworth soil in the wettest season. The method of cultivation had no effect on the uptake of either phosphorus or potassium except on the heavier soil in the wettest year, when potassium uptake was restricted after direct drilling.

The results are discussed in relation to information on soil conditions and root growth also being obtained in these experiments.

Two poorly digested materials, barley straw and grass cell wall residues recovered from sheep faeces, were treated with sodium ethoxide, methoxide or hydroxide under various conditions and the effects on their digestibilities studied by the nylon bag technique in the sheep rumen.

Acetyl groups were removed during these treatments and the degree of deacetylation could be controlled by adjusting the amounts of reagents used, about 25 m-mole of base/g being required to produce the maximum effect. Sodium ethoxide in ethanol was the least effective of the reagents used: it did not remove acetyl groups from barley straw and left a larger proportion untouched in faeces cell walls than did sodium methoxide in methanol.

Irrespective of the reagent employed digestibility increased with the progress of deacetylation and the two processes reached a maximum together, but there was not a linear relation between acetyl content and digestibility. In the case of straw treated with sodium hydroxide there appeared to be a linear relationship between digestibility and the amount of reagent applied, up to 20 m-moles/g straw.

Phenolic ester groups were less susceptible to the reagents tested than acetyl groups. It is concluded that the action of the basic reagents is probably upon polysaccharides other than cellulose, that access to some regions of the cell walls may be limited by the solvent present, and that the linkages that restrict digestibility have a sensitivity to basic reagents similar to that of the acetyl ester groups present.

Large populations of bees often continue to forage on oil-seed rape crops until flowering ceases. Applications of insecticide to crops in the late flowering stage could be hazardous to these bees.

During the dry summer of 1976, measurements were made of the photosynthesis, transpiration, respiration, and growth of irrigated (I) and non-irrigated (NI) spring barley growing in large field plots. Using a field enclosure, the photosynthesis of the irrigated barley was measured on 19 separate days during the latter two-thirds of the growing season when the plants were large enough to have measurable gas exchanges. The response of photosynthesis to water stress was determined from 3 days' comparative measurements on the I and NI crops, using both the field enclosure and, on 2 days only, a single-leaf photosynthesis chamber.

Water stress in the NI crop caused large decreases in yield: the dry-matter yields of grain and straw were respectively reduced by 19 and 27%; number of grains (but not grain mass) was also reduced. Field enclosure measurements, which were in good agreement both with values for canopy net photosynthesis derived from the leaf chamber measurements and with estimates of dry-matter production derived from plant weighings, indicated that the net CO2 uptake per unit leaf area was little affected by water stress. Results from the plant weighings and mensurations showed that, during the growing season, the main effect of water stress, mediated by the survival of fewer tillers and the premature senescence of leaves, was a reduction of leaf area (by 40%).

Two experiments, involving a total of 112 sheep, are described, in which ewes at different reproductive states were given complete diets with a varying grain: straw ratio. In Expt 1 ewes at three reproductive states (dry, pregnant and lactating) were given diets with four levels of coarsely ground oat straw (10, 25, 40 and 55% straw). In Expt 2 ewes in five reproductive states (early pregnancy, mid pregnancy, late pregnancy, lactation and dry) were given a basal diet similar to that given in Expt 1 but with five levels of straw (15, 25, 36, 45 and 55% straw).

The results showed that the intake of ewes varied with reproductive state, the highest intakes occurring during lactation. No significant diet × reproductive state interaction was observed which suggests that in ewes the physiological state can override some of the physical limitations to intake imposed by increased dietary roughage concentration.

We present results from an experiment at Saxmundham measuring the effects of growing different numbers of successive winter wheat crops, each year, from 1971 to 1976; it followed five cropping sequences introduced from 1966 to 1970.

From 1971 to 1973 four seed rates, two row spacings and three nitrogen rates were tested in all combinations with four of the previous cropping sequences. The remaining sequence was sown traditionally for continuity. Number of ears, leaf area, yield and nutrient content showed little benefit from increasing or decreasing seed rate, around that usually sown. Rows 15 cm apart gave the largest yield independently of N, because they produced most ears. There was no loss in yield from growing up to eight consecutive crops of winter wheat. 100 kg N/ha was sufficient for maximum yield.

From 1974 to 1976 two varieties of different potential (Cappelle-Desprez and Maris Huntsman), chlormequat chloride (CCC), three amounts of N, as single, or as divided dressings, were tested in all combinations with the four cropping sequences. The fifth sequence again was sown traditionally, but with or without autumn-applied N. Maris Huntsman gave a grain yield only 0·22 t/ha larger (4·5%) than that of Cappelle-Desprez, and mean yields were larger (also by 4·5%) where CCC was given. Divided dressings of N increased yields by 0·11 t/ha (2·2%). The mean increase in yield from adopting all three improvements was 0·5 t/ha (or 11%). Yields of the 10th and 11th consecutive wheats declined, probably because black grass (Alopecurus myosuroides) became abundant. There was a good inverse relationship between losses of N in drainage during winter and subsequent yield and grain nitrogen uptake, which helped to explain large yield variations from year to year.

One hundred and seventy-seven female Ayrshire cattle from approximately 6 months to 6 years of age were sampled on one occasion to determine the concentrations in plasma of Cu, P, Ca, Mg, Na, K and glucose. Eighty-nine adults, either lactating or dry, were re-sampled 2 months later to estimate concentrations of ketone bodies and free fatty acids. The data were analysed to estimate the contributions of various factors to variation in the concentrations.

The combination of age and stage of pregnancy or lactation significantly affected variation in all the constituents although some of this variation was accounted for by milk yield. The concentrations of Cu, Mg, glucose and ketones were significantly affected by milk yield. The presence of ketone bodies in milk (recorded in relation to the first occasion of bleeding only) was associated with a significant increase in the plasma concentrations of Na and Mg and a significant decrease of K and Ca.

The herd comprised pairs of genetically related animals. However, the estimates of heritability had large standard errors and only those for P and Ca were significantly positive.

The rate of leaf extension (LER) in swards of perennial and Italian ryegrass was examined in relation to daily mean air temperature. Cultivars studied were an Italian, an Italian-perennial hybrid, a tetraploid perennial and diploid perennial cultivars in three maturity groups. A range of response to temperature was apparent. The Italian, the hybrid and the tetraploid perennial cultivar showed higher LER values than those of the diploid perennials. Amongst perennial cultivars the tetraploid cv. Reveille was shown to have a lower rate of photorespiration than the diploid cv. Gremie. These data are discussed in relation to the use of daily temperature observations in predicting leaf growth.

The leaf growth, carrying capacity and dairy production of four summer-growing pastures were measured in a subtropical area of Australia. The growing season was subdivided into ten 4-week periods and the production was estimated for each period. Carrying capacities were determined by rotationally grazing four paddocks of each pasture over the 4-week period, and varying the stocking density so that a target weight of leaf material remained on the pasture at the conclusion of each grazing.

A non-limiting rate of nitrogen fertilizer increased total leaf production of kikuyu by 97% over a control treatment without nitrogen, but the response was not evenly distributed throughout the season. It fell to 50% during autumn when growth on the nitrogen-fertilized pastures was restricted following heavy defoliation during late summer. The use of the tropical legumes, siratro and glycine, in a mixed sward with kikuyu, did not increase leaf production over a kikuyu control pasture. The legumes grew poorly and this appeared to be due to the combined effects of their poor adaptability to the krasnozem soil, a high plant mortality especially during the first winter after sowing, the 4-week grazing interval and strong grass competition.

The carrying capacity of the nitrogen-fertilized pasture was 1·3–5·3 cows/ha at the beginning (September–October) and end (April–mid June) of the growing season, and increased to a peak of 7·4–9·7 cows/ha during February-mid March. Nitrogen fertilizer increased the carrying capacity by an average of 131% over that on a kikuyu pasture without nitrogen. The carrying capacities were similar on kikuyu and on a mixed carpet grass-kikuyu pasture, both without nitrogen, but were less on a tropical legume-kikuyu pasture which was grazed at a lighter grazing intensity during autumn to aid legume persistence.

Reflecting the experimental method of adjusting the stocking density according to the pasture available, differences in dairy production per cow were small relative to differences in the carrying capacity. Consequently seasonal variation in total dairy production/ha mirrored the carrying capacity. Nitrogen fertilizer increased the average production of 4% fat-corrected milk to 13·2 t/ha/40 weeks, an increase of 133% over the control without nitrogen.

The results illustrate the marked seasonal imbalance in growth and carrying capacity for a given pasture, and emphasize the need to use mixed feeding systems to provide a uniform level of nutrition for a fixed number of cows.

A tetraploid wheat breeding programme was initiated at the Plant Breeding Institute in 1970. Hexaploid × tetraploid wheat crosses were expected to contribute to the improvement of the tetraploid wheats but severe hybrid necrosis caused the death of the pentaploid Fxhybrid plants in most crosses. The genotypes of tetraploid wheat selections derived from crosses involving Rampton Rivet, a non-carrier of Neu were determined by test crossing to hexaploid wheat varieties which were known to carry the Neim allele. Similarly, hexaploid wheat selections which did not carry Ne2 were identified from crosses involving Maris Ranger by test crossing to durum selections which carried the Nef allele. By the careful choice of one parent, hexaploid x tetraploid wheat crosses were then made which avoided the hybrid necrosis problem. Segregation of the Ne% gene was as expected but selection for agronomic characters appeared to favour the retention of the dominant allele of the Ne1gene. Nevertheless, test crossing on a relatively small scale still identified many non-carriers.

Two genetic strains of white turkeys were reared together in a large flock under conditions allowing optimal growth from hatching to 20 weeks. Birds of both strains followed similar growth curves with males of both strains growing heavier than females. In one strain, however, the yield of breast meat as a proportion of live weight was greater in both males (287 v. 225 g/kg) and females (276 v. 201 g/kg). When expressed in ratio to breast width, maximum meat depth was greater in the strain which yielded the higher proportion of breast meat. However, with this index of breast plumpness, females scored higher than males in both strains (high yield, 0·45:1·00 v. 0·37:1·00; low yield, 0·33:1·00 v. 0·31:1·00). In the superficial anterior region of the pectoralis muscle in both strains and sexes, there were strong adenosine triphosphatase and weak succinate dehydrogenase reactions in nearly all muscle fibres. Differences in the radial growth of muscle fibres were found between the two strains and, by 20 weeks, birds of the lower yield strain had reached only 0·85 (males) or 0·82 (females) of the mean diameters attained in birds of the higher yielding strain.

Relations were developed between the carrying capacity or production of fat-corrected milk (FCM)/ha and various measures of pasture growth for six pasture treatments grown in a subtropical environment. The pasture and animal production variables were obtained from pastures grazed on a weekly rotation using stocking densities which were varied so that a target weight of leaf material remained on the pasture at the conclusion of each grazing.

Within a treatment, there was a curvilinear relation between the rate of leaf growth and carrying capacity, with the greatest efficiency of conversion at the lowest leaf growth rates. This relation generally varied between pasture treatments because of differences in grazing intensity. There was little variation in the production of FCM per cow between grazing periods within a treatment, reflecting the experimental technique of matching the stocking density to the amount of forage. Consequently FCM/ha largely mirrored the stocking density with some adjustment for differences in production per cow caused by differences in grazing intensity between treatments. Production of FCM/ha was affected more by a unit change in residue leaf yield than by a unit change in leaf yield before grazing.

Using the rate of leaf removal (intake plus grazing losses) per cow as an inverse index of grazing intensity, it was apparent that the use of variable stocking densities to obtain specified residue yields after grazing did not necessarily equalize the grazing intensity because the rate of leaf removal per cow varied according to the before-grazing leaf yield. Also soiling by dung caused differences in the acceptability of forage for grazing, resulting in differences in grazing intensity between pastures with the same yield and stocking density.

Domesticated cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) have larger seeds than their wild relatives. The effects of this increase in seed size on seedling emergence and growth were investigated. In shallow sowings, to 5 cm, seed size had no effect on emergence, but in deeper plantings ahigher proportion of the larger-seeded accessions emerged, and they emerged earlier than smaller-seeded accessions. The size of seedlings just after emergence was inversely related to depth of planting and directly related to seed size. The greater size of the seedlings of larger-seeded accessions was maintained until at least 40 days after sowing, despite the higher relative growth rates of smaller, wild seedlings. When compared at the same size there was no general difference in the growth rate of wild accessions and that of domesticates. During the evolution of domesticated cowpeas, large seeds have probably been advantageous because of their better emergence and establishment under agricultural conditions, and because of the greater size of plants arising from them.

Experiments were carried out to assess the increase in yield potential of winter wheat in the U.K. due to variety improvement since the early years of this century. The effects of other genetic changes were minimized by applying fungicide to control eyespot and foliar diseases, and by using nets to prevent lodging. The experiments were carried out in 1978 at Cambridge. One, on soil of high fertility in Camp Field, received 104 kg N/ha and the other, on soil of lower fertility in Paternoster Field, received 38 kg N/ha. Twelve genotypes were tested. Eight were varieties which formed a chronological series beginning with Little Joss, introduced in 1908. The remaining genotypes were recently developed selections from the Plant Breeding Institute and a line bred by the French breeders, Benoist.

The average yield of the 12 varieties and lines tested was 3·96 t/ha in Paternoster Field and 6·40 t/ha in Camp Field. In both fields the two highest yielding entries, Hobbit and the advanced breeding line 989/10, outyielded Little Joss by close to 40%. Benoist 10483 was the only entry for which the percentage yield advantage depended on high soil fertility.

The newer, high yielding, varieties were shorter and reached anthesis earlier than the older varieties. They had lower stem weights/m2 than the older varieties but similar maximum leaf area indices and leaf weights/m2. Within each experiment the total dry-matter production of the varieties was similar, the increase in grain yield due to variety improvement being associated mainly with greater harvest index (ratio of grain yield to grain + straw yield).

It is argued that by a continuation of the trend towards reduced stem length, with no change in above-ground biomass, breeders may be able to increase harvest index, from the present value of about 50% to about 60%, achieving a genetic gain in yield of some 25%. As the limit to harvest index is approached, genetic gain in yield will depend on detecting and exploiting genetic variation in biomass production.

In experiments on winter barley in 1975–6 and 1977–8 early or late sowing, full or half seed rate, nitrogen applied in March or April and tridemorph spray applied in autumn, early spring and late spring were assessed factorially in all combinations for their effects on mildew development, crop growth and grain yield.

Date of sowing had the biggest effect on yield. Early-sown crops (24 September 1975, 6 October 1977) greatly out-yielded the late-sown; by 79·8% in the first year and 53·9% in the second. Late sowing (6 November 1975, 2 November 1977) approximately halved plant emergence. Although late-sown plants developed more tillers, more grains per ear and larger grain this failed to compensate for the thinner stand.

Sowing at half seed rate did not decrease yield when compared with the crop sown at the full seed rate on the same date. In contemporaneous crops extra tillering and larger ears generally compensated for fewer plants.

The effect of date of applying N was variable. April N gave the best yield in the early· and late-sown crops in 1975–6 and in the late-sown crop in 1977–8. However, in the early-sown crop in the second year March N was best. Number of ears was increased in early-sown crops by March N but date of N application had no influence on number of ears in late-sown crops or on the number of grains per ear in any crop.

The winter of 1975–6 was mild and mildew developed on both early· and late-sown crops throughout their growth.

Single tridemorph sprays applied in autumn (14 November) to the early-sown crop or winter (25 February) to the late-sown crop or early spring (9 April) to both crops gave significant yield increases of 6·3–7·6%. Applying two sprays, one in autumn or winter plus one in early spring gave an increase equal to the sum of each applied separately. A late spring spray (14 May) had no significant effect on yield. The 1977–8 winter was colder and although mildew was moderate on the early-sown crop in autumn it was almost absent from this experiment after winter. Spraying failed to increase yield significantly.

A model for predicting the various transformations undergone in the soil by nitrogen applied in farm wastes, in response to variations in soil and climatic factors, is presented. The soil is divided into layers and a simple mass balance model is used to describe the movement and redistribution of water within the soil profile, as a function of rainfall, evapotranspiration and soil moisture characteristics.

Ammonification of native and applied organic N is assumed to follow first-order reaction kinetics and nitrification and denitrification are treated as zero-order reactions. The rates or rate constants for all three reactions were related separately to soil temperature, moisture content and pH.

Uptake of nitrogen by a grass crop, dry-matter production, removal of dry matter and N through harvests, addition to soil of C and N through dead plant material and stubble and the consequent immobilization of mineral N are allowed for. Some of the predictions of the model are compared with the results of a lysimeter experiment.

Circadian variation in the apparent digestibility of diets having different physical characteristics was measured in samples taken from the terminal ileum using simple cannulae and marker ratios. Six pigs were used in three latin squares involving three iso-nitrogenous diets (30 g N/kg D.M.). Diet A was based on barley, weatings, soyabean meal and fish meal, diet B included barley, weatings and oats and diet C was purified. The allocation of diet provided 100 g D.M./kg Weg0·75/24 h and in each latin square a different pattern of feed intake was used; diets were given at intervals of either 1 or 12 h, or ad libitum.

Differences in the digestibility of the diets were consistently distinguished by the technique. The circadian variation in digestibility was related to the type of diet and could be modified by changing the number and distribution of feeds per day. The results show that an understanding of the variation associated with different diets and feeding methods is necessary for optimizing the strategy for sampling from the terminal ileum.

An assessment was made of the relative merits in the short term of KH2PO4and pig slurry as sources of orthophosphate. This involved a comparison of these two sources of P with regard to (1) adsorption of P by the soil from solution, (2) maintenance of the solid-phase P in labile form and (3) rate of release of the solid-phase P into solution.

The adsorption isotherms made with two soils revealed that the amount of orthophosphate adsorbed from pig slurry was much higher than that from KH2PO4 at all levels of application. Conversely, in order to raise the orthophosphate concentration in the soil solution to a given level, much larger applications of orthophosphate would be required as pig slurry than that in the form of KH2PO4. Therefore, the risk of direct orthophosphate-P pollution of ground water from pig slurry is likely to be even less than that from soluble P fertilizers.

Determinations of exchangeable-P in treated soils after different times from treatment showed that a larger fraction of the solid-phase P derived from slurry orthophosphate remains in an exchangeable form than that from KH2PO4.

The rate of desorption of solid-phase P into solution measured using an anion exchange resin was higher in the KH2PO4-treated soil than that in the slurry-treated soil at different times from addition of equal amounts of orthophosphate-P.

Pod yield of groundnut and grain yield of wheat grown in that sequence was compared as affected by date of sowing and response to direct, residual and cumulative P application over 3 years in a field experiment. Total yield of groundnut and wheat was higher when groundnut was sown on 22 June and the following wheat on 1 November than when groundnut was sown on 6 July, followed by wheat sown on 16 November. Limited P requirement of groundnut was indicated by the small and inconsistent response to applied P on soil low in available P. Wheat responded to the second increment of P and direct application to wheat proved more effective than residual effects of previous application. Differential response of wheat to direct and residual P application in the groundnut-wheat cropping sequence indicates that P applications are more effective for wheat than groundnut, and groundnut can grow well on the residual P that remained in the soil.
