Cassia acutifolia Del., known in the Sudan as ‘Senna Makka’ and in commerce as ‘Alexandrian Senna’ (Tothill, 1948), is indigenous to the Sudan and grows wild in the Northern and Central Provinces. It is used locally as a laxative and itsactive ingredient senoside is extracted for pharmaceutical purposes in England, U.S.A. and Germany. The Sudan has been exporting pods and leaves of Senna for many years and the crop has been steadily growing in economic importance. The exported produce is obtained from wild or cultivated Senna plants. Recently a breeding programme has been initiated to provide improved varieties that can both meet the growers’ need for high yield and satisfy the market's demand for uniform high quality produce. Before a proper plant breeding programme can be established, the mode of reproduction must be known since crop breeding procedures are largely determined by the reproductive system. This paper reports on studies made to determine the breeding system in Alexandrian Senna.

The digestibility of the crude-protein equivalent (N × 6·25) of rations containing urea conforms with the general equation, y = 70 log x − 15, correlating the dry-matter crude-protein content (x) with its coefficient of digestibility (y), irrespective of whether the urea nitrogen is absorbed as ammonium salts or converted to microbial protein prior to digestion.

In the breeding of animals like cattle which reproduce slowly relative to the working life of a breeder, time is a factor of major importance. A study has therefore been made of the duration of samples of pedigree herds in order to obtain some indication of the time actually spent by breeders in the selective breeding of dairy cattle.

The samples consisted of pedigree Ayrshire, Jersey and Shorthorn herds, (a) established at various fixed times in the past; and (b) existing in 1939. The former were traced forwards, and the latter backwards, by means of herdbook registrations. Each sample contained not less than 300 herds, and the distribution of durations in each was considered in relation to the movement of population numbers in the whole breeds from which they were drawn.

In the last two decades significant progress has been made in understanding the factors and processes affecting the K requirement of crops. Simultaneously analytical techniques to study the behaviour of K in soil have been developed, on the understanding that soil controls the supply of nutrients to crop plants by adsorbing and sometimes fixing nutrients. As in solution culture, the concentration of K in the soil solution governs the uptake of K by plants. The soil matrix serves as a reservoir from which the soil solution is replenished. Monitoring K status of the soil solution under fixed crop sequences can provide a useful basis for improving fertilizer recommendations. Kconcentrations in the soil solution have, therefore, been measured on a soil in which a number of crops have been grown in fixed annual sequences in field experiments.

A field experiment was carried out on soyabean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) to measure the effect of planting date (soil temperature) on seedling emergence. Seeds were sown at weekly intervals on seven planting dates from April until the end of May in SE England in 1997. Planting date had no significant effect on final percentage emergence but had a highly significant effect on time to emergence. The coefficients of variation (c.v.) for the number of days to emergence (calendar days) were high (43–45%), and therefore not a reliable method for predicting emergence. Three accumulated heat unit (AHU) methods based on air and soil temperatures were compared with the calendar day method to determine the most reliable system for predicting seedling emergence. Accumulated soil temperatures above a base of 9·0 °C had the lowest c.v.s (8–15%) and were shown to be the most reliable predictor of emergence.

Ticks are considered in Europe to be the most important arthropod group responsible for vector-borne diseases in humans, while in the tropics mosquitoes take over this position with ticks being the second most important. Over the last decade, vector-borne diseases have proliferated within Southern Europe (Blue tongue and West Nile viruses, both mosquito-borne diseases) while human ehrlichiosis (a tick-borne disease) has increased dramatically in Eastern Europe.

In an earlier paper (Little, McLean & Winter, 1977) we reported a technique for the measurement of the phosphorus content of the diet consumed bygrazing cattle, which recently has been used successfully to measure the dietary intake of phosphorus by sheep grazing Mitchell grass (Astrebla spp.) pastures in western Queensland (Beale & McMeniman, 1978). In this technique, phosphorus of salivary origin is distinguished from that of plant origin in samples extruded by oesophageally nstulated animals by prior labelling of salivary phosphorus with the isotope 32P following the intravenous infusion of Na2H32PO4. The difference in specific activity between saliva and extruded bolus is used as the basis of the calculation of the phosphorus content of consumed herbage. Oesophageally nstulated animals may graze experimental pastures for an hour or more while samples are collected from them. It is important to have an accurate measure of saliva speoific activity, representative of that secreted during the grazing period; therefore, application of the technique is facilitated if the rate of change in saliva specific activity during collection periods is slow and linear.

A study of the birthcoat and its relation to kemp succession in the adult fleece of coarse-wool Awassi and Hamdani sheep was carried out, as an aid to early selection. Lambs were covered, at the age of 2 months up to 15 months, by fixing patches of canvas on six body positions.

Both Awassi and Hamdani birthcoats had high halo hair grades. The animals played the dominant role in affecting different traits of the birthcoat which indicated the importance of genetic factors in further development of the birthcoat. The birthcoat of both types of lambs showed only coarse (plateau) and less coarse (saddle) fibre type arrays.

Hamdani had more kemp as Gt and G2 (first and second generations respectively) than Awassi sheep. The shed Gx following the different fibre type arrays, showed some overlapping between plateau and saddle. The same arrays of the birthcoat behaved differently on the different positions, where generally the anterior positions had less kemp than those posteriorly. Percentages of shed fibres were 100, 17·14, 2·38 and 0·35 of halo hairs, super sickles, sickles and chalky curly tips respectively in Awassi. Corresponding figures were 100, 29·26, 5·87 and 7·73 in Hamdani. In Awassi, halo hairs, of the birthcoat, showed a relatively high correlation (P < 0·01) with G1 kemp on the hip and britch. Within saddle array, in Awassi, the correlation between halo hairs and Gx kemp showed the highest values (P < 0·01), whereas in Hamdani the correlation between super sickles in the birthcoat and G2 kemp showed medium values (P < 0·05).

Selection of high halo hair grade lambs, in the birthcoat, that have saddle arrays, with high percentage of sickle fibres in Awassi and with low percentage of super sickles in Hamdani, would result in low percentages of kemp in the adult fleece. High halo hair grades would be necessary for early survival of lambs.

The major portion of nitrogen nutrition of flooded rice is met through the mineralization of organic forms of N present in soil. This is true even when fertilizer nitrogen is added. The mineralization of organic matter under waterlogged conditions is governed mainly by the prevailing chemical and biological conditions. In recent years, attempts have been made to characterize the products of hydrolysis of soil organic nitrogen (Asami & Hara, 1970; Shinde, 1978; Subba Rao & Ghosh, 1981). Information on different fractions of nitrogen in waterlogged rice soils is scanty.

Two field experiments examined the nutritional responses of the white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) agronomic cultivar Lucyanne to lime-amended soil. In the first, plots and boundaries of a pre-existing lime-rate experiment were sampled in 1993. The maximum shoot dry matter production occurred between soil pH 4·9 and 7·2. Whole-shoot Al concentrations increased below soil pH 4·9, and plants died at pH 4·4. Although dry matter production declined in soil above pH 7·2, no chlorosis or plant death was seen. Only the whole-shoot soluble Ca concentration changed from neutral to alkaline pH soil: it was greatest when grown in the alkaline-pH soil. In the second experiment, plants were grown in neutral pH or limed soil in 2000. Shoots were divided into specific tissue types and analysed for Fe III and Fe II, as well as soluble and insoluble Ca fractions. When sampled in April after over-wintering, the higher Ca concentration in the limed compared with neutral-pH soil-grown plants was due mainly to insoluble Ca. No plants were chlorotic and no differences between the treatments in the concentrations of either form of Fe were found. In June no plants were chlorotic, however the concentrations of both total and soluble Ca fractions were greater in the limed than the neutral-pH soil-grown plants, and there was more stem Fe III and less leaf Fe II in these plants. The present study shows that the cultivar Lucyanne is not a reliable crop plant above pH 7·2, and the loss of shoot dry matter can be attributed to nutritional responses at a sub-chlorotic level of stress.

Two experiments investigated the effects of raising crisp lettuce seedlings under different environmental conditions prior to transplanting, on transplant size and weight and head weight at maturity.

The use of tungsten lighting for 4 h after the end of a 12 h period of fluorescent and tungsten lighting increased transplant size and weight and the weight of heads at maturity compared with fluorescent and tungsten lighting only. Glasshouse-raised transplants were larger than those raised under artificial lighting but gave heads of similar weight to transplants which had supplementary tungsten lighting for 2 weeks. Both these treatments gave significantly heavier heads than a drilled crop or plants raised without supplementary tungsten lighting. Increasing the number of weeks of the supplementary lighting treatment tended to increase the coefficient of variation (c.v.) of head weight. Nevertheless the drilled crop had a higher c.v. of head weight than any transplanted treatment.

The variety Pennlake produced pointed (‘coned’) heads when grown in the open and its leaves were shorter and broader than those of plants grown in polyethylene tunnels, which did not show ‘coning’. It is suggested that ‘coning’ occurs primarily as a result of either lower mean temperatures or a lower amplitude of temperature when grown in the open. It occurred most frequently with glasshouse-raised plants indicating that a higher raising temperature may also contribute to the problem.

The current work was designed to compare 13 agronomic and four physiological traits in mungbean isogenic lines (ILs) with different leaflet sizes and numbers. The IL population was developed from a cross made in 2006 at Kasetsart University, Thailand, between two pure lines (one with five small and the other with seven large leaflets), followed by continuous selfing of the progenies until F6. The resulting four IL families each exhibited seven leaflet types, viz. three normal-sized leaflets per leaf, seven large leaflets, nine large, five small, seven small, nine small or 11 small. A trial was conducted in 2008 to compare the 28 ILs using a randomized complete block design with three replications. The large multiple-leaflet lines gave higher values for seeds/pod, pod size, seed weight, seed yield, leaf area, leaf area index and proportion of light interception, but fewer clusters of pods, branches and pods per plant than the small multiple-leaflet ILs. Seed yield/plant was positively correlated with pods/plant, seeds/pod, mean seed weight, light interception, leaf area and plant height at maturity. Leaflet size showed association with more traits than did leaflet number.

1. Two basic slags differing widely in solubility and phosphate content have been treated for long periods with boiling ammonium chloride solution.

2. The low-grade slag lost 70 per cent. of the total lime and very little phosphoric acid; a residue with nearly 40 per cent. phosphate was obtained from an 18 per cent. slag.

3. The high-soluble slag also lost a large percentage of the total lime but large amounts of phosphoric acid were also found in solution. The residue from the 30 per cent. slag after 24 hours' treatment contained nearly 46 per cent. phosphate.

4. It is shown that a silico-phosphate is present in the high-soluble slag, but not in the low-grade slag.

5. The solubility in citric acid of the phosphates in the various residues has been determined.

6. The value of basic slags in supplying exchangeable calcium is discussed.

7. The effect of hydrofluoric acid on the slag residues has been investigated.

8. Experiments with fluorspar slags are described which confirm the view that the phosphate present is fluorapatite of very low solubility in citric acid.

The growth of 120 Friesian heifers born into one herd over a period of 12 years was studied for the period from 6 months of age to calving at about 30–35 months of age. Live weights were recorded weekly and rates of live-weight gain were calculated for each 3-month period for each animal. Δt 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of age the heifers weighed 360, 590, 800 and 950 lb. The coefficients of variation of live weight did not vary with age and averaged ±10·0%. Coefficients of variation of live-weight gain increased from ± 20% at 6–9 months of age to ±60% at 24–27 months of age. Growth rate declined by 0·02 lb/day from 12 months to 30 months of age for animals under constant managerial conditions. Heifers wintered indoors grew faster than those wintered outdoors. The growth of younger animals was decreased more by outdoor wintering (a reduction of 0·6 lb/day at 15 months) than was the growth rate of older animals (a reduction of 0·3 lb/day at 21 months of age). When live-weight gain was low in winter there was marked compensatory growth at grass the following summer. Pregnant heifers grew 0·1 lb/day faster in early pregnancy and 0·6 lb/day faster in the last 4 months of pregnancy than did barren heifers.

There was no appreciable difference between the live-weight gain of spring- and autumn-born heifers. With an autumn calving policy spring-born heifers were served and conceived 135 days earlier and weighed 106 lb less at calving than did autumn-born heifers. There was little difference in the milk yield of the two groups in 305 days of the first lactation.

The regression equation of live weight (lb) on age (months) to 3rd calving was W = 1449 – 2027 e-0·042t. It was concluded that in the interests of economic rearing the dairy farmer could with advantage exercise greater control of the relationship between nutrition and growth during high cost winter periods and low cost summer periods.

A total of 1659 ejaculates was collected from four Friesian bulls imported from Europe and ten of their offspring born in Iraq while in regular artificial service at the Abu-Ghraib Experiment Station. The work covered a period from 1 January 1965 to 30 June 1967.

The five semen characteristics, volume, density, mass activity, individual motility and pH were studied and the influence of age of bull and season on these characters was investigated. The relationships between the characters were also investigated.

Deterioration was observed in volume of ejaculate, density, mass activity and individual motility in the Iraqi Friesians. Influence of season on all semen characters lacked significance with the exception of mass motility in the European Friesian bulls (P < 0·05). Highly significant positive correlations were found between most of the characters studied.

The effects of several dietary regimens on the fat-free mass and the dry-matter, ash and potassium-40 content of selected bovine muscles were estimated. Muscle data from 104 half-sib Angus steers were secured at several stages of growth and after several feeding regimens. The results indicated that a hay diet, by comparison to a higher energy silage diet in the early feeding period (216–340 kg live weight), suppressed the fat-free weight, reduced the dry-matter content and increased the ash content of several muscles. These effects of early diet were reversed, however, when the animals were subsequently fed higher-energy rations and slaughtered at heavier weights (409 and 454 kg live weight). Data on potassium-40 gamma emissions by composite muscle samples confirmed the existence of age- or weight-associated decreases and suggested possible dietary influences on potassium levels in bovine muscles. The trends in these data indicated that low dietary energy (hay feeding) in the early feeding period delayed the decline in muscle potassium that normally accompanies maturation.

The working group, which is concerned with operational research methods and applications to agricultural science in its broad meaning (i.e. including Forest Management and Fisheries), was formed in 2003 within the European Association of Operational Research Societies (EURO). The first meeting of the group was held at the former Silsoe Research Institute in 2004. The group intends to have regular meetings in Europe at approximately yearly intervals, usually within the EURO Conferences. However, the next meeting will be held in 2008 within the British Operational Research Society's OR50 Conference in York, followed by the EURO XXIII Conference in Bonn in 2009 and the EURO XXIV Conference in Lisbon in 2010. The third meeting of the working group, chaired by Dr L. M. Plà of the University of Lleida, with the assistance of D. L. Sandars of Cranfield University and organized as a stream within the XXII EURO Conference, was held at the University of Economics in Prague from 8 to 11 July 2007 where the following papers were read in a set of 10 sessions.
