The mechanisms responsible for moving K from soil to root were studied by growing perennial ryegrass in pots containing a flinty silt loam from Rothamsted and a sandy Woburn soil, with and without added K, at 0.75 water-holding capacity. More water was taken up from the Rothamsted soil than from the Woburn soil, and less was taken up when K was added without affecting dry-matter production. After 25, 52, 83, 122, 194 and 276 days, K uptake, water uptake and the K concentration in the soil solution were measured and the mass-flow contributionto K uptake calculated.

Without added K, mass-flow accounted for only about one-sixth of the K taken up from the Rothamsted soil and about one-third from the Woburn soil. Except at first, diffusion probably accounted for the remainder of uptake but was the rate-controlling step for uptake from the Woburn soil only. With added K, mass-flow became much more important relative to diffusion in both soils, and transported more than enough K to account for the measured K uptake. Root interception probably did not contribute to K uptake after the early part of the experiment, because the pots used were small.

Mulching polybag oil-palm seedlings with bunch refuse, shredded polythene, sawdust, grass, wood shavings and kernel shells ‘all-year’ or throughout the nursery period (May–May), in the ‘wet-season only’ (May-November), and in the ‘dry-season only’ (November–May) resulted in soil temperature differences which did not exceed 1 °C at 5 cm polybag depth. This was attributed to the high rainfall which reduced considerably the soil temperature differences between mulched and unmulched soil in the wet season and to the enhanced leaf canopy in ‘all-year’ and ‘wet season only’ mulchings which shaded soil in polybags in the dry season.

The mulch materials and times of their application significantly influenced growth variables like number of leaves, plant height and stem girth, and number of blast-affected seedlings at 6 months after sowing (wet season). By 12 months after sowing, all growth characters measured were similar in the various treatments, indicating compensatory growth at the latter half of the growing period (dry season).

N, P, K, Mg and Ca contents of seedlings were not significantly affected by either mulch materials or times of their application. The results emphasize that mulching for at least 6 months during the early or late nursery period and the use of various mulches may be beneficial to oil-palm seedling growth.

Two changeover experiments, each on eight buffalo heifers, were conducted in two different years to determine the effect of wilting lucerne herbage (Exps. 1 and 2) and berseem herbage (Exp. 2 only) on voluntary dry-matter intake. The dry-matter content of the herbages increased by field wilting from 27 to 50 and from 26 to 44% for lucerne in Exps. 1 and 2 respectively, and from 21 to 31% for berseem. The drymatter intake, nutrient digestibility coefficients, nutritive value index and retention time of undigested residues were determined for each fresh and wilted herbage.

Wilting increased the dry-matter intake of lucerne from 2·3 to 2·8 and from 2·1 to 3·5 kg per 100 kg body weight in Exps. 1 and 2 respectively. Berseem dry-matter intake was increased from 2·2 to 3·1 kg per 100 kg body weight. Digestibility coefficients of all nutrients of both herbages increased by 6–20%. Retention times were unaffected by wilting. The nutritive value indices for lucerne and berseem in Exp. 2 increased by 160 and 60% respectively. In Exp. 2, the average loss of herbage dry matter due to wilting was 3·8%. The higher consumption of the wilted herbages is ascribed to their lower water content. The practical implications of these results are discussed.

Between 1972 and 1976 a series of 15 trials was carried out at various climatically favoured sites throughout Scotland to assess the potential of new hybrid maize varieties of European origin under Scottish conditions. No meaningful differences were found between varieties in respect of dry-matter yield or maturity.

Seed rates ranged from 100 to 200 × 103 seeds/ha giving final stands from 40 to 194 × 103 plants/ha. Regression analyses for the variety Dekalb 202 included in 54 treatments indicated that the relationship between plant population density and dry-matter yield was partly linear with an important quadratic function, suggesting an optimum of 179 × 103 (± 80 × 103) plants/ha. Plant population density accounted for 65·9% (P < 0·01) of the variance in dry-matter yield but was not significantly related to dry-matter content.

Climatic variation between years had no overriding influence on growth and development. Dry-matter production for the variety Dekalb 202 sown in mid-May ranged from 2·86 (1972) to 14·54 t/ha (1975) with associated dry-matter contents of 15·1 and 24·1% respectively. In a few instances slightly higher dry-matter contents (maximum 28·6%) from mid-May sowings were associated with lower yields.

Neither date of sowing nor accumulated temperature to harvest measured as Ontario Heat Units was significantly related to yield but date of sowing accounted for 29·5% (P < 0·01) of the variance in dry-matter content. Accumulated Ontario Units at harvest were not significantly related to dry-matter content.

An interesting relationship between dry-matter yield and the date on which the crop had received 1379 Ontario Units was found. This relationship may be useful in selecting sites at which maize may be grown or to predict maximum potential final yield in any given season.

Body-weight gain, protein efficiency ratio (PER), standardized protein efficiency ratio (Std PER) and gross protein value (GPV, GPV1 and GPV2) bioassays were compared with nitrogen incorporation efficiency (NTE) for their accuracy and precision to determine protein quality of fish meal (FM), groundnut cake (GN), mustard cake (MS) and cottonseed cake (CS) for poultry. Results showed that all the bioassays were significantly (P < 0·05) correlated with NIE and were equally effective in ranking the samples of FM, GN, MS and CS according to their protein quality although body-weight gain procedure was less sensitive.

The effects of different severities of continuous grazing imposed during the spring, followed by a uniform continuous grazing management from mid-summer onwards, were examined in relation to changes in tiller demography and leaf growth of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Two grazing severities were imposed, based upon maintaining a constant sward height of either 35 mm (severe) or 75 mm (lenient). From 1 June onwards, a uniform grazing pressure with a sward height of 60 mm was imposed.

Differences in the age class structure of the tiller populations developed during the spring between the two grazing treatments, principally through the suppression of daughter tiller development under the more lenient grazing. The demographic differences between the treatments were further increased during the remainder of the grazing season, under the common grazing management, largely because of the greater production of secondary daughter tillers in the sward which had been leniently grazed. The demographic differences between the swards had little effect on net pasture production during the treatment season, with lamina growth rates being virtually unaffected across a wide range of steadystate, continuous-grazing pressures. However, longer-term effects on pasture development, due to the demographic differences between the swards, did appear in the following season; the more severe grazing pressure treatment resulted in earlier inflorescence development in the subsequent season.

The device of split-plot confounding for introducing additional factors into a field experiment can only give a balanced design when the number of whole plots per block and the number of replications of each whole-plot treatment are multiples of the number of sub-sets into which the combinations of the additional factors are divided. When this condition is not satisfied it may still be possible to arrange that the design shall be partially or nearly balanced in such a way as to be useful in practice and to require a reasonably simple statistical analysis. Nevertheless, the experimenter should always bear in mind the desirability of balance, and should have recourse to unbalanced designs only when the exigencies of space or material, or an unforeseen necessity of introducing extra factors during the course of an experiment, leave him with no alternative. No attempt has been made to give a comprehensive account of designs of this kind, but the numerical analysis of the yields from a typical experiment has been discussed in detail. Though the lack of balance leads to some non-orthogonality of treatment contrasts, the more important comparisons can usually be satisfactorily estimated. The details of this estimation vary from one experiment to another, but the example given should make the principles clear to those who are familiar with the analysis of variance. Four of five ‘hairy’ Wiltshire lambs had fibre type arrays (as defined by Dry, 1965) of Plateau (P0 and P1) type, whereas in five ‘woolly’ lambs there was only one Plateau (P3) array, the arrays of the remaining lambs being Ravine or Saddle. In terms of Dry's theory that the severity of pre-natal check determines persistence of wool growth in adults, it appears that the amount of checking in these Saddle and Ravine arrays was insufficient to prevent the casting of the adult coat.

1. Eighty counts of soil bacteria and actinomycetes, made on mannite-asparagine agar and dextrose-casein agar, showed that the latter medium gave significantly higher numbers of bacteria in 76 per cent. of cases, and significantly higher numbers of actinomycetes in 60 per cent. of cases.

2. On mannite-asparagine agar the values of χ2 of the bacterial counts were as a whole in agreement with expectation. The counts of actinomycetes colonies on this medium showed a tendency to subnormal variation.

The tubers of Dioscorea composita Hemsl. contain a high level of diosgenin, and hence there is economic interest in this plant. Levels of diosgenin vary greatly in different clones of the species. Vegetative propagation was studied with a view to obtaining plants with high levels of diosgenin. In this study cuttings from 1-year-old vegetative plants were used for propagation. The cuttings were treated with a single application of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and several applications of 6 benzyladenine (6-BA). Rooting was never observed in untreated cuttings. Cuttings treated with IBA produced callus and roots. Early application of 6-BA delayed senescence but inhibited callus and root formation. New plants were obtained with one application of IBA followed by applications of 6-BA at 48 h intervals initiated 2 weeks after IBA application. In some experiments, all cuttings treated this way produced new plants.

Eighteen bulls were used to investigate the influence of feeding frequency on feed consumption, nutrient utilization and nitrogen metabolism in growing zebu cattle.

Results indicated higher feed intake, nutrient utilization and average daily live-weight gains for animals fed two or three times daily compared with those fed once daily. Feed efficiency and feed cost per kg gain as well as nitrogen metabolism also increased as the frequency of feeding increased from once to three times daily.

More frequent feeding could evidently be of practical advantage in intensive beef cattle production where zebu cattle are raised on tropical hay diets.

The nutrition of the carrot in a light gravel soil of known analysis with high available phosphate has been studied by statistical pot-culture methods, and the responses, linear and curvature components, etc., due to nitrogen, phosphate, and potash, have been calculated.

No hard and fast rule can be made as to the adequacy or otherwise of any particular fertilizer in a soil, as the different parts of the plant (top and root) were shown to be capable of responding quite differently to that fertilizer.

The electrical potential difference between exuding sap of detopped sunflower plants and rooting media containing different NH4 ion concentrations was measured, together with the Na and K concentrations in root tissue and their fluxes in the xylem exudate. It was found that adding NH4 ions to the medium made the electrical potential difference less negative with respect to the external solution and decreased the water conductivity of roots. Moreover, fewer K and Na ions were transported to the xylem sap and the K concentration in root tissue after 3 h had decreased whereas that of Na had increased. These results suggest that the sunflower root acts as an efficient accumulator for Na rather than simply as a barrier to Na transport. It is suggested that NH4 ions caused a decrease in charge separation across one of the barriers where Na is actively transported so that adding NH4 ions to the medium increased Na accumulation in root cells. This barrier may have been at the symplast.

A natural rock phosphate, ‘Kodjari” (RP), sparingly soluble, indigenous to Burkina Faso, and a commercial single superphosphate (SSP) fertilizer were studied at Farako-Bâ in the Northern Guinea Savannah (NGS) and at Oipasse in the Sudan Savannah (SS) regions of Burkina Faso. A 3-year crop sequence either of cowpea, maize and sorghum or of cowpea, sorghum and sorghum was used, respectively, in the NGS and SS regions. The sorghum crop in the third year was not fertilized with any phosphorus (P) source. The objectives of the research were to study the direct and residual effects of the P fertilizers on soil fertility improvement in order to boost agricultural productivity in both regions.

Cowpea daylength-insensitive cultivars, in both regions, and maize and sorghum in the NGS and SS regions, respectively, responded more strongly to SSP than to RP fertilizer treatments. The optimum rate of SSP and RP source was 21·8 kg P/ha and 43·6 kg P/ha, respectively, for cowpea in both regions. The optimum rates of phosphorus fertilizer applied in the second year to maize in the NGS and to sorghum in the SS region, in addition to the optimum rate of P applied to cowpea the previous year, was 10·9 kg P/ha of SSP or 43·6 kg P/ha of RP, and 21·8 kg P/ha of SSP or 43·6 kg P/ha of RP, respectively. Both P sources had significant residual effects for up to 2 years. The agronomic effectiveness of RP relative to SSP, in the year of application of both fertilizers, was greater for cowpea than for maize in the NGS region and similar for cowpea and sorghum in the SS region; it increased markedly for the two subsequent cereal crops in both regions. Cowpea fertilization with both P sources proved, therefore, to be effective in improving the soil fertility and boosting the productivity of cereal crops in the 3-year crop sequence.

1. Some data are given for the relative buffer-index values of saps from underground parts of wheat, barley, oats, potatoes and turnips.

2. The correlation of these values with limits of tolerances of soil-pHranges by the plants is discussed.

3. Some possible practical applications for these data are indicated.

A convenient method of introducing into a field experiment additional factors which can be applied to smaller areas than that of the whole plots is to use split plots: each whole plot is split into sections, and the different combinations of the additional factors are randomized over each set of sub-plots. An extension of this idea is the device of split-plot confounding, by which not all the combinations of the additional factors are used in every whole plot; instead, the possible combinations are subdivided into two or more sets which are then assigned to blocks and whole-plot treatments in a balanced manner, in such a way as to confound certain interactions of the additional factors between whole plots and certain higher order interactions between blocks.

Two hundred and forty mature Merino ewes were used in a factorial experiment to investigate the effects of single injections of either 0, 40, 80 or 160 mg progesterone on the length of the subsequent oestrous cycle. Equal numbers of ewes (15 per group) received subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, and equal numbers were treated either on the day of oestrus or the following day.

Oestrous cycle length was significantly reduced in all treated groups, with a minimum cycle length of 7–10 days following treatment with 80 or 160 mg progesterone. Neither route of administration nor day of treatment significantly affected the response. The conception rate achieved by treated ewes at the first post-treatment oestrus did not differ significantly from that in comparable controls.

The results suggest that a single massive dose of progesterone on the day of oestrus is an effective means of shortening the oestrous cycle of the ewe without loss of fertility.

Photosynthetic electron transport, osmotic volume changes and protein loss on osmotic shock were measured in isolated pea chloroplasts after treatment with a range of aldehyde concentrations at various temperatures and times. ADP+Pi-stimulated oxygen production was the most sensitive to inhibition by the aldehyde treatment. With suitable conditions, osmotic volume changes could be prevented and protein losses on osmotic shock reduced to about 1% of the control value, whilst NH3-uncoupled electron transport retained about 40% of its activity. Results showed that basal, ADP + Pi-stimulated and NH3-stimulated O2 production could be used together to indicate the extent of chloroplast fixation thus providing a way of assessing fixation in preparations where osmotic changes are difficult to measure.

Glutaraldehyde (M.W. 100) was found to be 60–80 times as effective as formaldehyde (M.W. 30), on a molar basis, in preventing osmotic volume changes and protein loss on osmotic shock.

The application of this work for the production of large amounts of glutaraldehyde fixed chloroplasts and of fixed herbage for use as a tool in nutritional studies in ruminant animals is discussed.

1. By separating the sources of variability in an experiment involving haematological observations it has been shown how to estimate the usefulness of repeated observations on each animal.

2. In the illustration provided it is concluded that when monozygous twin calves are used, random variability accounts for so much of the total variability that a great improvement in accuracy can be achieved by taking repeated observations on each animal. When unrelated calves are used, little additional accuracy is obtainable by taking more than about three observations on each.

3. It is shown that, in consequence, the relative efficiency of monozygous twin and unrelated calves is likely to vary, depending upon the number of observations on each animal. Thus, to benefit fully from the increased efficiency offered by monozygous twins, more observations are required on each animal than in the case of unrelated animals.

4. Although the figures refer to haematological measurements on calves, the statistical method evolved is of wider application.

Grain yield in wheat, as in other crops, is a complex character, made up of many subcharacters. In the present investigation the study of genotypic and phenotypic correlations and path-coefficient analysis indicated that 250-grain wt. and ear number were two important component characters in wheat. Under these circumstances it would be desirable to select those plants which produce large number of tillers and very large and bold sized grains. The greater the number of tillers on a plant the greater would be the number of grains/plant. Again large and bold type of grain would obviously give higher seed wt.

With the use of discriminant functions it was observed that a maximum genetic gain of 7·44% was obtained when grain yield/plant, 250-grain wt., no. of ears/plant and ear length were included in the function. This would suggest that the discriminant function is superior to straight selection in wheat. However, an expected gain of 4·13% was realized when only 250-grain wt. and grain yield/plant were taken into account. In the present analysis it appeared that relatively more emphasis should be given to grain wt. during selection. To make proper use of such characters in selection, their importance must be considered in the definition of economic worth. Progress measured in terms of yield alone will be less when the economic importance of plant type is ignored.
