Field trials in commercial cereal crops were carried out over three growing seasons between 1988 and 1991 on farmland near Basingstoke, Hampshire to monitor the effects of reduced agrochemical use on crop quality. The lack of highly competitive weeds on the study sites gave little benefit in yield from the use of herbicide. In some cases no weed control or half rate applications gave significantly better yields than the full recommended rate. Herbicide applied at the full recommended rate significantly increased grain N in two of the experiments, despite no notable yield benefit from weed control. Grain N was the only aspect of grain quality to show a consistent decline with even moderate reductions in N application rate.

A constant rate of change in harvest index (dHI/dt = k) has recently been incorporated into several crop simulation models, so that final grain yield can be calculated from final biomass and the duration of grain growth. Implicit is the assumption that dHI/dt is conservative across treatments and environments. This assumption was tested using data from five experiments grown in the United Kingdom (1973, 1978, 1994) and New Zealand (1992, 1993). The experiments included commercial spring and winter wheat cultivars introduced during the last 100 years and nitrogen, irrigation, sowing date, temperature and CO2 treatments. In all cases, the time course of harvest index (HI) had an initial lag phase, a linear phase and a maturation phase. The linear phase was stable in field-grown crops, except for a reduction in slope after lodging in some crops. Values for dHI/dt, taken as the slope of the linear phase, varied with variety and available nitrogen, were stable for a given variety among years, and were unaffected by water stress. Variation in dHI/dt among varieties was independent of their year of introduction, although those with the Rht2 semi-dwarfing gene generally achieved a higher final HI due to a reduced lag phase. Differences in the duration of the linear phase also caused differences in the final HI after drought. The upper and lower limits of dHI/dt for fieldgrown crops were 1·37 and 0·64% d-1 but, under normal fertility conditions, the variation was between 0·90 and 1·19 % d-1. Results indicated that dHI/dt could provide an effective semi-empirical relationship for predicting grain yield in simulation models. The consistent, linear nature of this relationship suggests a physiological maximum for dHI/dt, for a given species and variety. It may be possible to exploit varietal differences in dHI/dt, and in the lag phase, for yield improvement.

Mass selection (MS) and bulk selection of a single character (CS) were used for the improvement of a base population, Bl, which was composed of Tai Gu male-sterile progenies of ten high protein content and four high yielding parental lines of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), transferred by 6–10 backcrossing generations, with equal numbers of plants from each line. Backcross mass selection (BS) was used for the improvement of a second base population, B2, which was formed by Tai Gu malesterile plants of four high yielding parental lines, again with equal numbers of plants from each line. Three cycles of selection were conducted for both population Bl and B2. Direct genetic advances of sterile plants for six traits were studied. The results indicated that use of the Tai Gu male-sterile single dominant gene is effective for recurrent selection of wheat. For improvement of a single character, CS was the most effective method, of which the selective effect in the first cycle (Cl) was greater than in the second (C2) and the third cycle (C3), although multivariate analysis snowed that the CS method was not conducive to the maintenance of variation in a population. The greatest response to selection was found in C2 with the MS method. Multivariate analysis also indicated that both the MS and BS methods increased the variation in the population, but MS was found to be the best selective method as judged by the mean response over three cycles of selection.

Differences amongst wheat cultivars in the rate of reproductive development are largely dependent on differences in their sensitivity to photoperiod and vernalization. However, when these responses are accounted for, by growing vernalized seedlings under long photoperiods, cultivars can still differ markedly in time to ear emergence. Control of rate of development by this ‘third factor’ has been poorly understood and is variously referred to as intrinsic earliness, earliness in the narrow sense, basic vegetative period, earliness per se, and basic development rate. Certain assumptions are made in the concept of intrinsic earliness. They are that differences in intrinsic earliness (i) are independent of the responses of the cultivars to photoperiod and vernalization, (ii) apply only to the length of the vegetative period up to floral initiation (as suggested by several authors), (iii) are maintained under different temperatures, measured either in days or degree days. As a consequence of this, the ranking of cultivars (from intrinsically early to intrinsically late) must be maintained at different temperatures. This paper, by the re-analysis of published data, examines the extent to which these assumptions can be supported.

Although it is shown that intrinsic earliness operates independently of photoperiod and vernalization responses, the other assumptions were not supported. The differences amongst genotypes in time to ear emergence, grown under above-optimum vernalization and photoperiod (that is when the response to these factors is saturated), were not exclusively due to parallel differences in the length of the vegetative phase, and the length of the reproductive phase was independent of that of the vegetative phase. Thus, it would be possible to change the relative allocation of time to vegetative and reproductive periods with no change in the full period to ear emergence.

The differences in intrinsic earliness between cultivars were modified by the temperature regime under which they were grown, i.e. the difference between cultivars (both considering the full phase to ear emergence or some sub-phases) was not a constant amount of time or thermal time at different temperatures. In addition, in some instances genotypes changed their ranking for ‘intrinsic earliness’ depending on the temperature regime. This was interpreted to mean that while all genotypes are sensitive to temperature they differ amongst themselves in the extent of that sensitivity.

Therefore, ‘intrinsic earliness’ should not be considered as a static genotypic characteristic, but the result of the interaction between the genotype and temperature. Intrinsic earliness is therefore likely to be related to temperature sensitivity. Some implications of these conclusions for plant breeding and crop simulation modelling are discussed.

Yields and hardseed breakdown of underground and aerial seeds in subterranean vetch (Vicia sativa ssp. amphicarpa) and lathyrus (Lathyrus ciliolatus) and aerial seeds of Medicago rigidula and M. noeana were compared at Tel Hadya, near Aleppo, in north Syria between 1990 and 1992. Underground and aerial seed and straw (mature herbage) yields were measured at maturity in the first spring, and hardseed breakdown over the following summer, autumn and winter. Regenerating herbage production was measured in the second spring.

In the establishment year (292 mm rainfall) the medics produced twice as much straw as the amphicarpic species. In contrast, seed yields were less than half: M. rigidula and M. noeana produced 412 and 110 kg/ha respectively, while subterranean vetch and lathyrus produced 1174 and 736 kg/ha. More than 95 % of the total seed yield of the amphicarpic legumes was underground. Underground seeds of the amphicarpic legumes were larger than aerial seeds, and almost 10 times as large as the medic seeds.

Seeds of all species were > 90% hard when newly set in summer. At the first seasonal rains > 95% of underground seed had softened, compared with 5 and 40% of the aerial seeds of vetch and lathyrus respectively. The medics remained > 90% hardseeded. In laboratory tests, embryo dormancy was observed in all species prior to the onset of first seasonal rains. For the amphicarpic legumes, but not for the medics, embryo dormancy persisted into winter. In the field, and after all germination events, 900–1430 seeds/m2 of subterranean vetch seed remained in the soil. This was considerably more than expected, based on the low levels of hardseededness and embryo dormancy observed in the laboratory. The results suggest that dormant seeds of the amphicarpic legumes need light to germinate.

In the second year (353 mm rainfall), regenerating M. rigidula produced 5·3 t/ha compared with 3·4 t/ha by the best subterranean vetch from approximately equal numbers of seedlings. The amphicarpic legumes germinated later and over a more extended period than the medics, indicating that they could become weeds in a cereal/pasture rotation. However, the results suggest that in drier areas or in drier years the vetches will compare favourably with the medics in most respects. Clearly, subterranean vetch and lathyrus have great potential for pasture improvement in dry areas.

Potato seed tubers inoculated with Rhizoctonia solani and Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica, to induce stem canker and blackleg respectively, were planted with uninoculated seed tubers in field experiments designed to measure the effects of the diseases and of neighbouring plants on tuber yield. Gaps were also included. The plant variables total and ware (> 150 g) yields and tuber numbers were affected by disease, and also by competition from the two plants on either side in the same row (first neighbours), and increased as competition from neighbouring plants decreased. Plants adjacent to the first neighbours also influenced yields of plants with stem canker but those in adjacent rows did not have a significant effect with either disease. Both diseases altered the tuber size distributions, which were also modified by neighbouring plants. The data were used to predict total and ware yields for crops containing different proportions of healthy, diseased and missing plants.

The recombinant genotypes generated with a potato breeding scheme cannot always be evaluated over the range of environments for which cultivar development is aimed. At the Scottish Crop Research Institute, the cultivar breeding programme aims to develop genotypes which perform well in one or more environments in the UK and/or countries around the Mediterranean basin. In each of three years (1984, 1985 and 1986) between 40 and 50 potato genotypes were selected solely on their phenotypic performance in an environment just south of Edinburgh in Scotland. These were then trialled at sites in four environments in the typical ware-producing regions of England and four environments around the Mediterranean region. Despite significant genotype x environment interactions for many traits, the superior genotypes tended to perform well over a wide range of environments.

The biology of some host-adapted populations of A. gossypii and the comigration band mobilities of aphid enzyme extracts were studied in 1992 in Kochi, Japan. Results indicated that biologically there are no significant differences between eggplant, cucumber and watermelon aphid populations with regards to longevity and the number of offspring produced per female aphid. However, in all populations, adult survival declined significantly within 5 days of introduction onto a new host from the original. No genetic differences were observed between populations since they scored equally at seven different enzyme loci: malic enzyme (ME), glucosephosphate isomerase (GPI), isocitrate dehydrogenase (1DH), phosphoglucomutase (PGM), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGD), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and naphthylacetate linked esterase (EST). Also, protein bands, as revealed by SDS-PAGE, as well as carboxylesterase banding patterns, showed no differences between populations. These results indicate that the various host-adapted populations of A. gossypii infesting a wide range of solanaceous and curcubitaceous crops can be treated as single species devoid of genetic variability. The slight differences in biology and behaviour found between the various hostadapted populations can be attributed to physiological variations, differences in host nutrient composition, and possibly to some unknown co-existing biotic factors.

The effects of three planting patterns (ridge, furrow and flat) and three population densities (31800, 47600 and 71400 plants/ha) on the growth and yield of three sunflower hybrids, Flamme, Upsolveraflor and Isostar, were investigated at the Sultan Qaboos University Experiment Station, 1990–93. Seed and oil yields were higher in the ridge-planted sunflower than those planted in furrow or flat patterns, the order being ridge > flat > furrow. However, the magnitude of yield differences between ridge-planted and flat-planted sunflower was not sufficiently high to compensate for the additional labour and materials required for making ridges. Based on this, planting in the flat was recommended. Although increased population density resulted in taller plants, lodging was generally low and did not constitute a serious problem. Biomass/plant, head weight, receptacle weight, head diameter, number of seeds/head and 1000-seed weight decreased with increase in plant population density. Flamme had its highest seed and oil yield at 71400 plants/ha, while Isostar attained its highest yield at 47600 plants/ha. Isostar outyielded the other two hybrids and appeared to have a potential for commercial production in a desert climate.

Two field experiments were conducted at Giza, Egypt in the winter seasons of 1990 and 1991, to study the effects of two fungicides (Dithane M45 and Saprol), two insecticides (Rogor and Pirimor), two acaricides (Tedifol and Comite) and two herbicides (Lancer and Cobex) on some morphological characters and yield of broad bean. The investigated pesticides were used at the recommended doses.

All pesticidal treatments reduced the percentage of missing plants at harvest. They also, except Lancer, led to an increase in the total yield of green pods and dry seeds. Individual treatments of Saprol, Dithane M45 and Cobex significantly increased the number and weight of green pods/plant and yield of dry seeds/plant. The individual treatment by Pirimor or Rogor also led to an increment in yield of dry seeds/plant. Lancer proved to be toxic to broad bean plants, as it caused a reduction in the number of branches and plant productivity of green pods and dry seeds.

Experiments were designed to assess the effects of cover crops, compared with bare stubble, on the establishment and yield of a following crop of vining peas sown in March. The cover crops of winter wheat (to simulate self-sown wheat) or winter rye, and bare stubble, were ploughed in on different dates: 1 December, 1 February or 1 March. Cover crops were destroyed with or without the use of herbicide. The three experiments in 1990/91, 1991/92 and 1992/93 were sited on a free-draining, sandy loam soil at Thornhaugh, Cambridgeshire.

The cover crops, sown as soon as possible in September following a winter wheat crop, had low dry matter (DM) production and nitrogen uptake in the dry autumns of 1990 and 1991, but in the third experiment (1992/93), autumn rainfall was higher than the long-term average and DM production and N uptake were greater. Cover crops reduced the overwinter soil mineral nitrogen (SMN) content in all 3 years compared with bare stubble. However, in spring, SMN increased where cover crops had been incorporated, due to the mineralization of the cover crop residues. Rye captured more nitrogen than wheat.

Vining pea vigour and maturity at quick-freezing harvest stage were not affected by cover crop, destruction date or method in any of the three seasons.

On the light soil, satisfactory seedbeds were achieved after ploughing at all three timings for experiments in 1990/91 and 1992/93 and vining pea yields were not reduced by cover crops or by destruction date or method. However, delayed ploughing in February and March in the 1991/92 experiment resulted in lower vining pea yields compared with ploughing in December. This was due to poor seedbeds after late ploughing rather than cover crop, stubble treatment or method of destruction.

Ammonia volatilization and denitrification were measured in a ryegrass field in Denmark after direct injection and application with trail hoses of an untreated cattle slurry and an anaerobically digested slurry in late May-early June 1993 and 1994. Ammonia volatilization was measured using a windtunnel system for a period of 8 days after slurry application. Denitrification was measured for a period of 21 days after slurry application. In an adjacent field experiment, nitrogen-uptake (N-uptake) was determined in the first two cuts of the ryegrass harvested after slurry application. N losses through ammonia volatilization were larger in 1993 than in 1994 due to differences in climatic conditions. Ammonia volatilization was lowered substantially (47–72%), when slurry was injected compared with surface application. In 1993 the loss from surface-applied digested slurry was only 35% of total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN), while the loss from the raw slurry was 47%. There were no significant differences in ammonia volatilization from the two slurry types in the other experiments. N losses through denitrification were low (< 2% of TAN), but there were clear differences in the losses, depending on slurry type, application method and experimental year. Injection of the slurry gave a larger N-uptake in the first cut of grass compared to the trail-hose application. In 1993 N-uptake from the digested slurry treatment gave significantly larger N-uptake compared to the raw slurry in the first cut.

In a 15-week animal-house experiment, 24 steers were offered one of six diets based on molasses and ad libitum barley straw. Three levels of dietary nitrogen (N) and three levels of dietary phosphorus (P), in factorial combination, were formulated by the addition of urea, formaldehyde-treated wheat gluten and monosodium orthophosphate. Food intake, liveweight gain, plasma metabolites and P kinetics were measured under dietary regimens similar to those experienced by cattle grazing Australia's northern semi-arid rangelands.

The adverse effect of the low dietary N on both liveweight change and feed intake was greater and more immediate than that of the dietary P deficiency. The reduction in feed intake due to the P deficiency approached that caused by the N deficiency after 10 weeks. Under conditions of adequate dietary N, there was a trend for the effects of P deficiency on liveweight gain to be exacerbated. Dietary N and P deficiency reduced the concentrations of plasma urea-N and inorganic P respectively. Dietary N deficiency had no effect on cortical rib bone thickness but P deficiency markedly decreased bone thickness. Faecal endogenous loss of P and P absorption efficiency ranged from 9 to 21 mg/kg LW and 0·63 to 0·82 respectively for P intakes from 6 to 41 mg·kg LW. Faecal endogenous losses were closely related to dry matter intake and plasma inorganic P together. Dietary N deficiency affected the efficiency of absorption of P.

The results of this experiment indicate that cattle consuming diets containing low levels of N and P require supplementary N and P in combination to avoid severe depletion since an increase in N intake alone exacerbated the P deficiency. The results are also discussed in relation to the published findings regarding P metabolism and the implications for the calculation of P requirements.

The results of six experiments on growing cattle weighing 140–480 kg, and with liveweight gains of —0·46 to 1·11 kg/day, were reanalysed to provide estimates of their phosphorus (P) requirements. The 158 data sets were from individually penned cattle offered barley straw-based diets ad libitum with dry matter digestibilities of 0·53–O·65, or from cattle grazing tropical pastures with in vitro dry matter digestibilities ranging from 0·50 to 0·62. Various concentrations of dietary energy, nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca) and P were imposed during the course of the experiments with the penned cattle and various rates of application of P fertilizer changed the botanic and nutrient composition of the forages available to the grazing cattle. The P balances and P kinetics of the cattle were studied using 32P as a tracer.

Over the range of P intakes normally observed in cattle consuming forage diets (10–60 mg/kg LW), the coefficient of P absorption was high and not affected by age or liveweight. The regression coefficient relating P intake to P absorption was 0·77 for unsupplemented grazing cattle and 0·82 for penned supplemented cattle. When the plasma inorganic P concentrations were < 50 mg/1, urinary P excretion of the penned cattle was low, as were the endogenous faecal P losses of both the penned and grazing cattle. These losses were concluded to represent obligatory losses and were related to dry matter intake (r = 0·73) in the range 9–17 mg P/kg LW.

The total P requirements of growing cattle were estimated as g/day and g/kg DM intake from this data. The requirements of cattle consuming forage diets were 40–50% lower than those published by the Agricultural and Food Research Council (AFRC 1991), even though the same equation for the net requirements for growth was utilized.

Four lambs (mean 27 kg liveweight) offered 900 g/day lucerne chaff were prepared with catheters in the portal vein (PV), cranial mesenteric vein (CMV), femoral artery (FA) and abomasum. L-[2,6-3H]phenylalanine (Phe) and 14C-(Phe)casein were infused into the abomasum in separate experiments. Concurrent samples of blood from the PV, CMV and FA were prepared as four fractions: plasma, deproteinized whole blood, free Phe in deproteinized whole blood, and whole blood. Ratios of net label uptakes in different blood fractions indicated that red blood cells and blood proteins were unlikely to contribute to net Phe uptake into the PV or CMV. Small peptides may have contributed up to 20% to total appearance of Phe in the PV and CMV. However, net uptake of peptides from the lumen was probably zero. It was concluded that the Phe uptake and, by implication, total amino acid uptake from the lumen of the small intestine into the PV and CMV were as free amino acids.
