Twenty-one insecticides were tested for acute toxicity by surface film contact method against the grasshopper, Zonocerus variegatus (L.) in the laboratory. Decamethrin, cypermethrin, lindane o, o-diethyl(p-methyl sulfinyl) p′-phosphorothioate, and dieldrin were highly potent. Moderately potent insecticides were propoxur, bioallethrin, telodrin, isodrin, heptachlor and rotenone. A toxic symptom common to all potent insecticides in the female was the opening and closing of ovipositor valves which remained wide open at death. Five insecticides—dieldrin, telodrin, p, p′-DDT, chlorobenzilate, DMC and chlordimeform induced cannibalism among the treated females.

During foraging, parasitoids of insect herbivores are aided by chemical compounds generally termed ‘infochemicals’, to locate their hosts. The origin of the infochemicals varies; they may be derived from the herbivore itself or activities related to the biology of the herbivore, the host plant, or from interactions between the plant and the herbivore. This paper reviews the status of research in this area, and presents an account of the infochemicals used by African stemborer parasitoids during foraging, as well as recommending possible areas for further investigation. The information generated has potential for application in behaviour modification of parasitoids species in biological control programmes.

The effects of climate on the diurnal biting pattern of Simulium damnosum s.s. were measured at Jos Plateau, Nigeria. Rain in the hours prior to the catch inhibited morning activity by lowering the temperature and light intensity, and raising the humidity. Under shade there were no remarkable fluctuations in the light intensity, and no obvious peaks in activity; in sunny places, activity was bimodal, with a small morning peak and a pronounced afternoon one. The fastest changing climatic factor relative to an increase in the biting activity of flies was light intensity; followed by temperature.

In Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) (Coleoptera, Bruchidae) several first instar larvae can use a hole made in the seed coat by a conspecific to enter the seed. The present study tests whether there exists different seed-coat piercing abilities related to the hatching rank. The hatching rhythm was found to be well synchronized with the periodic conditions. The hatching rank had no influence on the piercing behaviour. On the basis of these observations the hypothesis of a behavioural dimorphism as has been suggested in the literature may be rejected.

The life cycle and development of Zonocerus variegatus (variegated grasshopper) from southern Benin was studied at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Benin Station, from March 1992 to August 1994. Hoppers of the 1st to the 5th stage were collected from uncultivated fields in the Atlantic Province and placed in cages and their development evaluated by counting the number of insects in each stage every two days until the adult stage. Mating and the number of egg pods were also recorded. The study showed that Z. variegatus has only one generation in southern Benin, running from September/October to July/August. Hatching occurs between September/ October and February/March. Zonocerus variegatus females can oviposit up to five times and the interval between ovipositions varies from 14 to 32 days. The variegated grasshopper has an egg diapause and egg hatching is not synchronised. These observations explain the almost perennial presence of the variegated grasshopper in southern Benin.

Three designs of pheromone-baited flight trap for the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) were compared in a daily-trapping trial in Ghana. Japanese-beetle (JB)-type traps, composed of a funnel surmounted by a cross-vane, captured two to three times more beetles than delta- and box-type sticky traps, which are currently the most commonly used designs. Japanese beetle traps have now been adopted by the Ghana National Trapping Network for P. truncatus. The higher efficiency of the JB traps has led to the discovery of the borer in two important maize-growing areas which had previously recorded zero catches using sticky delta-type traps. Analysis of correlation between replicates suggested that JB traps were the most consistent of the three trap designs (r = 0.88). The mode of entry of P. truncatus adults into different trap types, which may explain variations in catches from the different traps, is discussed.

The chitin synthesis inhibitor lefenuron [N-{2,5-dichloro-4-(1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3-hexafluoropropoxy)-phenylaminocarbonyl}-2, 6-difluorobenzamide] was found to have a negative effect on the encapsulation responses of Spodoptera littoralis larvae towards supernumeraries of Microplitis rufiventris parasitoid. Superparasitised hosts fed on compound-free diet showed strong encapsulation reaction (ca. 40.8%) to surplus parasitoid larvae having scars of physical combat. Treated hosts exhibited a significant reduction in either capsule thickness or encapsulation rate to the excess parasitoid larvae. Even when a capsule was formed, it had a thinner haemocy tic layer than tha t of control hosts. Studies on the differential haemocyte counts showed that failure of treated larvae to encapsulate injured surplus parasitoid larvae could be attributed to the following factors: (1) disturbance in plasmatocytes-granular cells (GR) ratio, e.g. abnormal increase in GR levels possibly causing faint haemocytic reaction to injured parasitoid larva(e); (2) the parasitoid surface becoming less attractive to the granulocytes and plasmatocytes; (3) the haemocytes involved in capsule formation (granulocytes, plasmatocytes) losing their ability to spread out over the surface of parasitoid larvae; and (4) the blood cells of the treated host failing to recognise wounded larvae as foreign bodies. Reduced encapsulation capacity might be due to a secondary effect(s) of IGR treatment inducing a suppression of adhesive activity of the plasmatocytes. These results may be useful for improving our understanding of insect immune reaction and/or manipulating parasitoids activity against nonhabitual Parasitoida.

The leucaena psyllid, Heteropsylla cubana, was studied under constant temperatures ranging from 21.5 to 35.0°C. Total mean development time was 11.2, 9.6 and 8.1 days at 21.5, 25.0 and 30.0°C respectively. For these temperatures, the mean number of eggs laid was 532.3, 758.3 and 374.7 with hatch rates of over 90%. At 35.0°C, a mean of only 4.5 eggs/female were laid in 24 h, egg hatch (9.0%) was very low and nymphs did not complete their development. Nymphal survival was only 65% at 30.0°C, compared to 84.2 and 87.6% at 21.5 and 25.5°C, respectively. Adult longevity was highest at 25.0°C; females outlived males at all temperatures. Age-specific life table statistics are given for the three temperatures. The calculated intrinsic rates of natural increase (rm) at 21.5, 25.0 and 30.0°C were 0.226, 0.293 and 0.324 respectively. Relative humidities in the range of 25 to 84% did not affect egg hatching, nymphal survival, or adult emergence of H. cubana.

Eggs and larvae of the bollworms Earias spp. followed a uniform distribution on G 27, LD 133, LD 230 (Arboreum) and F 414 (hirsutum) cotton varieties in Ludhiana (Punjab). Clump distribution of Earias eggs and larvae on the four cotton varieties may result from environmental heterogeneity. Although Earias gravid females laid maximum eggs at the top (41–50 cm) plant canopy mostly, examination of the whole length of the plants is suggested for sampling Earias on the four varieties.

Sample sizes of 10 plants in arboreum and seven in the hirsutum variety resulted in reliable estimates of population at 5% risk level. Injured fruiting bodies and larval numbers were significantly and positively correlated.

A millet farm was divided into five treatment plots of three replicates. The population of the grasshoppers was assessed by flushing and the percentage leaf damage on the millet was estimated by visual grading of the defoliated area. Weeding discouraged oviposition and reduced the vegetative shelter and the population of the grasshoppers. The unweeded plots had high levels of defoliation and low grain yield of millet relative to the weeded plots. Oedaleus spp were the most numerous grasshoppers and probably caused the greatest damage on pearl millet. The common weeds on the farm were Brachiaria xantholeuca, Cenchrus biflorus, Ipomoea vagans and Mitracarpus scaber.

A list of 88 nominal taxa of mosquito species (Diptera: Culicidae) originally described from Uganda is given. The list includes 68 valid species, 7 subspecies, 6 varieties, and 7 synonyms, within 10 tribes, 14 genera, and 13 subgenera. All 3 subfamilies of Culicidae (Anophelinae, Toxorhynchitinae, and Culicinae) are represented. The type localities of the different species are updated for quick identification based on the present political boundaries within Uganda. The species stages that are as yet not fully described in the literature, and those species whose breeding habitats are unknown are indicated.

Electrophoretic studies of Guatemalan blackflies, Simulium ochraceum, the main vector of Central American onchocerciasis, were performed using isozyme patterns. A total of six larval and adult populations originating from four localities (a non-endemic area, Finca La Ruda, a low-endemic area, Finca Rincon, and two high-endemic areas, Finca Brote and Finca Recreo) were analyzed. The enzymes examined were adenylate kinase (AK), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI), hexokinase (HK), isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), malic enzyme (ME), and phosphoglucomutase (PGM). Of these, six enzymes, AK, ALP, HK, IDH, LAP, and ME showed no variation either within or among populations. GPI and PGM were found to be highly polymorphic in all of the six populations. χ2-test for fit to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) revealed that the distribution of the phenotypes of the two polymorphic enzymes was not significantly out of the HWE. A verages of values of proportion of polymorphic loci (P) and heterozygosity per individual (H) of the six populations were 0.234 and 0.084, respectively, each of which was similar to the values reported for different groups of organisms (Nei, 1975). Genetic diversity among populations was measured by FST and GST and both parameters showed that the non-endemic population from the Finca La Ruda (Dl) was greatly differentiated genetically from the other five populations. Estimates of genetic distance (Nei, 1975) showed that the Dl population was furthest from the other populations.

Laboratory reared populations of Spodoptera exempta (Wlk.) had higher net reproductive rate and capacity for increase on maize, Zea mais L. and star grass, Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. than on Kikuyu grass, Pennisetum clandestinum Chiov., Guinea grass, Panicum maximum Jacq. and Setaria plicatilis (Hochst.) Hack. These parameters were greatly influenced by the larval mortality, but in all cases they were greater than one demonstrating that S. exempta populations can multiply on all the host plants tested. Since no populations with stable age distributions are known for S. exempta the net reproductive rate is more appropriate than the capacity for increase in estimating its population growth.

Occurrence of mortality due to bacterial infection by a gram negative bacterium and the hymenopteran entomophagous parasite Apanteles glomeratus (L.) was observed in a natural population of Catopsilia crocale Cramer, a defoliator of the ornamental and medicinal plant Cassia alata. On regular field observation during the seasons 1980–1981 and 1981–1982, it was found that mortality due to these factors was mostly confined to the Final larval instar and the pupa of C. crocale. A direct correlation was obtained between population density of C. crocale and the number of larvae'pupae killed due to these factors. As the incidence of the hymenopteran parasite and bacteria fluctuate along with the C. crocale population, consideration of the foregoing factors as potential biological control agents for the pest population of C. crocale, is suggested.

The behavioural process by which a mosquito finds a potential host organism is mediated by olfactory receptors on the insect's antennae. Lactic acid (LA) is a host-related odour common to all potential hosts. On the antennae of the female are two LA-sensitive neurons; one of these is excited by LA but the other is inhibited by LA. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the LA-excited neuron is correlated 1:1 with the presence of host-seeking behaviour such that when host-seeking behaviour is inhibited following a blood meal, the sensitivity of the LA-excited neuron is markedly decreased. The inhibition of host-seeking behaviour and the decrease in LA-sensitivity are induced by a hemolymph-borne factor released during oocyte maturation. The source of this factor is the fat body of blood-fed females, which requires a vitellogenic ovary for its production and/or release. The combined activity of the two types of LA-sensitive neurons together with the shift in sensitivity of the LA-excited neuron from a range where host levels of LA are present to a range exceeding LA levels expected from a host are sufficient to account for the inhibition of host-seeking behaviour following a blood meal.

Gravid Lucilia treated topically with ivermectin (0.05μg/g, which represented approx. 4% of the 48 hr LD50) laid fewer viable egg batches (less than 50% of controls) and more sterile ones, when compared to untreated (P = 0.019) and acetone-treated flies (P = 0.028). This effect was also seen when mature third instar larvae were dosed with 7.6 μ g ivermectin/g (P = 0.0075 and 0.016 respectively); number of viable egg batches produced were only 25% of the number laid by the progeny of untreated larvae.

Dosage with fenthion stimulated an increase in the number of viable egg batches laid when incorporated in the original larval feeding medium at 0.2 μg/g liver; fewer viable egg batches were laid by the flies which developed from mature larvae treated with 7.6 μ g fenthion/g. Acetone solvent alone had a mild stimulatory effect on topically dosed flies.

The length of the reproduction cycle of Lasioderma serricorne (F.) under ambient laboratory conditions (temperature range 28.0–32°C and 72.5–80.5% r.h.)was shown to depend on the identity and state of division of various cereal grains, cowpeas, groundnuts and dried root crops. Cut dried yams allowed the shortest cycle andwholericethelongest.The rate of population increase by L. serricorne was also assessed and this was maximal when cut wheat and minimal when whole rice was provided. Fecundity was highest with sorghum and lowest with rice as food source. Females of the species lived longer than males.

Maize is the single most important food cereal in eastern and southern Africa. Yield levels, however, are among the lowest in the world. Among the major constraints limiting production are the insect pests. Objective assessment of damage and losses caused by these pests are lacking in several countries within the region. This paper discusses some of the methodologies available, and how they can be used to estimate the losses caused by insect pests under different situations. It emphasizes the need for standardization of the methodologies, so that information generated from different countries can be compared. This will promote collective action to combat the pest menace and increase food security.

In tomato, infestation by the natural population of the fruit borer, Heliothis armigera (Hubner), on number basis was positively correlated with infestation on weight basis. Infestation was negatively correlated with the number of flowers per inflorescence. Surface texture of calyx also affected the susceptibility of the genotype. Reducing sugars in fruits were positively correlated, while zinc and iron content in foliage and ascorbic acid contents in fruits were negatively correlated with degree of infestation. Coefficient of determination revealed that 87% variability in borer infestation was due to zinc, iron, ascorbic acid and reducing sugar content.

Investigations were conducted in six farm fields (1.5 to 3 ha each) in Burkina Faso with objectives to (1) study adult Smicronyx spp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) population dynamics during Striga hermonthica (Scrophulariaceae) seed-pod production, (2) assess the impact of different population levels of Smicronyx spp. on St. hermonthica capsule production and, (3) estimate Smicronyx female reproductive success in seed-pod galls. A Univac portable sampler was used to sample adult Smicronyx spp. and St. hermonthica densities were assessed using aim2 metal quadrat. Fifty St. hermonthica shoots per field were sampled each week. Before the emergence of St. hermonthica, Smicronyx adults were found on nearby Striga éspera (Willd) Benth. fields. Striga hermonthica shoots produced on average ca. 24 seed capsules each, while each female Smicronyx galled from 12 to 32 seed pods. Seed-pod galling alone was not sufficiently high to be considered as a successful reduction factor for St. hermonthica seed production in natural conditions. Smicronyx spp. adult population levels decreased during the St. hermonthica capsule production period. Increased population levels of Smicronyx spp. resulted in higher percentages of St. hermonthica seed-pod galls, suggesting that a ugmentative techniques, if used as part of an integrated control programme could be a worthwhile strategy.
