Based on the systematic study of the nature of symptoms and extent of damage, a rating scale of 1 (healthy plant) to 9 (deadheart) was developed to allow the screening of maize genotypes for resistance to the pink stemborer, Sesamia inferens (Walker). The maize plants were separated into three distinct groups, namely least susceptible (1–3 score), moderately susceptible (4–6) and highly susceptible (7–9).

In North Africa, the potato tubermoth Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) is an important pest in traditional, non-refrigerated potato stores. A collaborative research programme of the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique de Tunisie (INRAT) and the International Potato Center (CIP) investigates the relationships between, (a) the dynamics of the field populations, (b) the harvest date, (c) the economic damage in the field, and (d) the subsequent damage in stores under Tunisian conditions. Emphasis was given to the identification of cultural practices that allowed reduction of pesticide applications and to the replacement of the commonly used parathion with less toxic products.

Potato tubermoth control was achieved by applying a synthetic pyrethroid (permethrin) or Bacillus thuringiensis at the beginning of the storage period. The latter, however, seemed to be less effective on tubers with a high initial infestation (over 20%). The studies showed that tuber damage could be avoided by an early harvest and insecticide applications in the field were not indicated.

An integrated control approach including an early harvest date (to reduce initial tuber infestation), and the application of B. thuringiensis or a synthetic pyrethroid is being developed.

Short and long dry spells occur throughout the year and limit the access of gravid mosquitoes to oviposition sites. Using simulations in laboratory conditions, we explored the possible consequences of a long duration of egg retention on reproductive capacity, trophic behaviour, life expectancy and gonotrophic cycle in a context of breeding-site absence. KISUMU and wild gravid females of Anopheles gambiae were subjected to a delay in egg-laying following the preset modalities as immediate egg-laying versus retention for 5, 10 and 15 days. The egg batch size and the hatching rate were measured. In addition, blood-feeding patterns and life expectancy were investigated. Our study showed that oviposition occurs much faster in the standard susceptible laboratory strain An. gambiae KISUMU with a lapse of 2.2 days than in the wild females of An. gambiae with an average of 5 days between the second blood meal and egg-laying. In this experiment, the egg-retention time did not significantly affect the number of eggs laid. In the absence of breeding sites, the rate of egg-hatching decreased in proportion as the retention time became longer. The study also showed that gravid females deprived of oviposition sites continue to take blood meals. The average longevity of non-gravid females was estimated to be lower than that of gravid females. The oviposition-site deprivation has no impact on female fecundity and blood feeding, but influences egg-hatching.

Inheritance of resistance to sorghum midge, Contarinia sorghicola Coq. was studied on a set of 21 diallel crosses involving four midge-resistant and three susceptible sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench cultivars under natural midge infestation at Dharwad during the late rainy season (August to November) 1983. Both additive and nonadditive genetic variances were important for midge resistance. The parents, DJ 6514 and TAM 2566, proved as better general combiners. Mean performance of the parents and their general combining ability (GCA) effects were strongly correlated. Crosses with positive specific combining ability (SCA) effects in both F1 and F2 generations had at least one parent with high GCA effects and better per se midge resistance. Midge-resistant parents, DJ 6514 and TAM 2566, with high per se resistance and GCA effects should be utilized in breeding for midge resistance.

In a series of field experiments conducted since 1977, various cultural pest management techniques have been tested to reduce damage by the sweetpotato weevil, Cylas formicarius formicarius F. Planting rice after harvest of the weevil-infested crop does not reduce weevil damage in the ensuing sweetpotato crop if the source of weevil is present in the vicinity. Rice rotation initiated away from the weevil source, coupled with removal of the common wild-host Ipomoea sp., can reduce weevil infestation and maximize the effectiveness of carbofuran transplant dip treatment. In order to reduce the weevil source from the weevil-infested sweetpotato of the previous season, a 2-week flooding of the field soon after harvest practically eliminated the number of volunteer sweetpotato plants and the weevil. Covering the planted area with rice straw or plastic mulch reduced weevil infestation.

The feeding traces in fossil ginger leaves and the conserved phylogenetic relationships seen today in certain clades of hispine beetles on their monocot hosts point towards a long and intimate plant–insect evolutionary relationship. Studies in the 1970s and 1980s documented the rich fauna of rolled-leaf hispine beetles and their association with the Neotropical monocot family Heliconiaceae in Central America. In this report, the taxonomic breadth of these early studies is expanded to include species in the families, Marantaceae, Poaceae, Arecaceae and Costaceae, all with species occurring sympatrically with the Heliconiaceae in lowland Panama. Additionally, the analysis is widened to include open-leaf scraping and internal leaf-mining clades of hispoid Cassidinae. The censuses add more than 5080 Cassidinae herbivore occurrence records on both open and unfurled new leaf rolls of 4600 individual plants. Cluster analysis reveals that while many Hispinae species tend to group with plant species in only one of the three monocot orders, 9 of 16 Hispinae species on Zingiberales hosts were recorded in substantial numbers on both the Heliconiaceae and the Marantaceae, indicating an underlying pattern of feeding flexibility at the host plant family level.

A 2-year study in a vegetable-growing area (Tori, Hla Avamé) in Benin has shown that the invasive aphid parasitoid Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) was attacked by three species of native hyperparasitoids. On several occasions, hyperparasitoids emerged from more than 90% of the mummies collected. The dominating hyperparasitoid was Syrphophagus africanus (Gahan). Two species in the genera Pachyneuron (Pteromalidae) and Aphanogmus (Ceraphronidae), respectively, were also recorded as hyperparasitoids. Charipinae hyperparasitoids were lacking. The only aphid host present at Hla Avamé was Aphis gossypii Glover, a dominating species in vegetable agroecosystems in Benin.

Three generations of the maize stalk borer, Busseola fusca (Fuller) per year were observed in maize fields in Southern Ethiopia. However, the third generation was not important on maize. The first generation developed on young maize plants during the wet season (April–July). The second generation occurred in July and majority of larvae went into diapause from September to February while a small proportion pupated in the months of September and October and gave rise to a third generation. Pupation of the diapause larvae was observed in April.

Female moths from the first (non-diapause) generation laid significantly more eggs than those coming from a diapause generation. Longevity of these moths was also significantly longer than the diapause generation. Despite the indicated differences, female moths from both generations laid most of their eggs between the second and fifth nights after emergence. The number of eggs laid and rates of hatching declined with age of moths irrespective of generations.

Protease inhibitors (PIs) retard growth and development and cause mortality in a range of insect pests belonging to various orders. Some transgenic plants expressing PI genes have also been effective against insect pest attack. The effects of two purified soybean PIs, i.e. trypsin inhibitor (Kunitz type; SBTI) and trypsin–chymotrypsin inhibitor (Bowman-Birk type; SBBI), were investigated on first and third instar larvae of the melon fruit fly Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) in laboratory feeding bioassays. The larval period of both the first and third instar larvae was prolonged when the larvae were treated with various concentrations of SBTI and SBBI. The total development period prolonged significantly in both the instars of larvae treated with SBTI, but in SBBI-treated larvae, the development period was delayed significantly only in the third instar larvae. A decrease in percentage pupation and adult emergence was observed in the first and third instar larvae treated with different concentrations of both SBTI and SBBI. The present studies showed that SBTI and SBBI have a potential in inhibiting the growth and development of melon fruit fly, but further detailed and molecular level studies are required before their use in transgenics.

A morphological diversity study was conducted on African rice gall midge Orseolia oryzivora Harris & Gagné and two other African species, Orseolia bonzii Harris and Orseolia nwanzei Harris & Nwilene, sp. n. Morphological differences between adult and immature stages of the three species are slight and mainly evident in pupal characters. Due to limited differences in morphological characters, genomic DNA fingerprinting of these three insect species was carried out using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and sequence-characterized amplified region (SCAR) methods. Out of 90 operon primers, 15 showed polymorphism among the three species tested, generating 86 bands, 60 (70%) of which were polymorphic. Primer OPV6 produced three RAPD markers that distinguished the three Orseolia species. These markers were cloned and sequenced. Their sequence was then used to design six SCAR primer pairs. Each SCAR primer pair amplified and distinguished the three Orseolia species at genomic DNA level. Both SCAR and RAPD genomic DNA fingerprinting revealed that O. oryzivora and O. bonzii are most closely related and O. nwanzei is distinct. Each of the six SCAR primer pairs produced a specific DNA fragment size specific for O. nwanzei, O. oryzivora and O. bonzii. The DNA fingerprints will be useful for entomological survey, identification of new species and differentiating aggressive from non-aggressive species, aimed at the effective development of rice cultivars with durable resistance to African rice gall midge.

The movement of Cicadulina storeyi China (Homoptera: Cicadellidae), vector of maize streak geminivirus, within maize (Zea mays L.) fields was studied using mark, release and recapture experiments. Cicadulina storeyi, marked with fluorescent dye, were released at dusk and monitored for 14 days using yellow sticky traps placed at different distances (5–160 m) and directions from the release point. The suitability of maize growth stage for settling by C. storeyi was also investigated. Catches decreased steadily with distance from the release point and exponentially with time following the release. The mean leafhopper dispersal rate varied between 2.6 and 2.8 m/day for dry season and rainy season tests, respectively. The dispersal rate increased with distance from 1.4 m/day at 5 m to 13.6 m/day at 160 m. Wind was a major factor affecting direction of leafhopper movement with the largest proportion of C. storeyi collected downwind. Investigations on the suitability of maize growth stage for settling by C. storeyi revealed that the leafhopper preferred young plants (2–6 weeks after planting) to old ones.

Lepidopterous stem borers constitute one of the major constraints to cereal crop production in southern Africa. Chilo partellus Swinhoe, is an economically important stem borer of maize and sorghum. Current research status on C. partellus is reviewed and substantial advances in the distribution, bioecology and control strategies are discussed. Present work on the assessment of crop losses, elucidation of mechanisms of resistance, development of resistant crop cultivare, feasibility of biological control measures and the implementation of other stem borer management methods are reported. Further areas of research into the management of C. partellus are identified.

The paper which covers a two season study from 1981 through 1982, major and minor cropping seasons, describes an improved methodology of sampling for stem-/pod-borer pests within an intercropping farming system involving maize, cowpea and sorghum as target crops. The authors' approach to the intercropping study has been from a holistic angle in an attempt to gain an understanding of the processes which lead to intercropping advantages under the different cropping patterns. The target pests reported were categorized into three trophic levels: firstly, specialist feeders which were Maruca testulalis (Geyer) on cowpea and Atherigona seccata (Rondani) on sorghum; secondly, the relative specialist feeders as Chilo partelhts (Swinh.), Busseola fusca (Fuller), Eldana saccharina (Wlk.) and Sesamia calamistis (Hmps.) on maize and sorghum; and thirdly the generalist feeders represented by Heliothis armigera (Hbn.) which subsists on cowpea, maize and sorghum plants respectively. The entomological data assayed included levels of borer attack on plant spatial and temporal patterns. The population of C. partellus, the dominant stem-borer within the study area was significantly regulated within the intercropping systems. The borer incidence on the maize and sorghum monocrops and the maize/sorghum dicrop was earlier (>14 days after germination, DAG) and accentuated with time, whereas intercropping of the cereals with non cereals caused significant delay (>42 DAG) in the borer colonisation and establishment within the intercropping systems. Incidence of ‘dead hearts’ caused by the borers was significantly higher (P < 0.05) within sorghum than maize stands; a factor related to the significantly higher borer attacks on late tillers which suggest that plant ventrical heights within stands influenced borer attacks. Sorghum shootfly was restricted to within 42 DAG and very much regulated by intercropping. Maruca testulalis attack on cowpea plants was confined between 30 through 60 DAG of cowpeas. Presence or absence of non-preferred cereal hosts within the cropping patterns did not seem to interfere with the M. testulalis colonisation and establishment processes within the cropping patterns. Pod damages resulting from Maruca attack were however influenced by the cropping patterns with mixed maize–cowpea–sorghum intercrop, producing significantly higher healthier pods. The paper concludes that some intercropping patterns have many advantages over monocropping patterns with respect to pest colonisation and establishment.

Glossina pallidipes, a widely but discontinuously distributed African savanna species, is one of the economically important tsetse flies because it is a vector of trypanosomiasis, a lethal disease of cattle and other domestic animals. DNA sequences of ribosomal (r16S2, 249 bp) and cytochrome oxidase I (COI, 421 bp) concatenated mitochondrial genes were analysed in 23 geographically diverse samples of G. pallidipes from Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Among 873 flies, we detected 181 composite haplotypes and found that their spatial diversities and frequency distributions were heterogeneous. Haplotype and nucleotide diversities were greatest in Ethiopia and least in southern Africa. We observed little haplotype and nucleotide diversity among regions, and detected severely limited maternal gene flow among the sampled populations (ΦST= 0.42). Tests for demographic stability and analysis of mismatch distributions revealed regionally contrasting demographic histories. The Ethiopian populations were phylogenetically the oldest and genetically the most diverse, and exhibited successive waves of contraction and expansion. The southern African populations were phylogenetically the youngest and genetically the least diverse, and showed only a single, recent expansion. Likely ecological correlates of historical tsetse fly demography include population suppression trials in East Africa and recurring rinderpest epizootics in southern Africa, beginning in the late nineteenth century that reduced host mammalian populations.

Orseolia oryzae, the rice gall midge, is a major pest of rice in many areas of tropical Asia and is becoming an important pest in Africa. A chronological review of the progress made in various national programmes on varietal resistance, sources of resistance and breeding for resistance is given. Many resistant varieties have been identified and have been utilized in breeding programmes to develop high yielding varieties with multiple resistance to the gall midge and other insect pests and diseases. Mechanisms and inheritance of resistance in rice varieties are discussed. Rice varieties resistant in various countries and sources of resistance used in breeding programmes are listed. Biotype variations in different countries and within the countries are revealed, and a preliminary classification of gall midge biotypes based on varietal reactions is proposed.

Three 9-acridone alkaloids, melicopicine, tecleanthine and 6-methoxy tecleanthine were isolated from the bark of Teclea trichocarpa. Melicopicine and tecleanthine exhibited mild antifeedant activity against the African armyworm, Spodoptera exempta. All the three alkaloids showed antimicrobial activity against the fungus, Cladosporium cucumerinum and the bacterium, Bacillus subtilis.

Pesticide spray thresholds, as a component of Integrated Pest Management, must be integrated with the world of smallscale farmers if they are to be useful to them. The capacity and desire to spray have specific features of significance for threshold control. Threshold use may be encouraged by maximising the divisibility of pesticide technology. Farmers' perception of thresholds, often subjective and personal, may be enhanced by information learned from outsiders, as complementing, rather than supplanting, their existing knowledge and experience.

Genetic variation of resistance and tolerance to stem-borer, Chilo partellus, was studied in three sorghum crosses. Parents, F1 and F2 progenies were evaluated for per cent foliar damage and stem tunnelling as a measure of resistance or susceptibility. The parental cultivars involved in the crosses represented a fairly distinct range of character expression for plant height, foliar damage, stem tunnelling, stem lodging and grain yield. Means, degrees of dominance in F1 and inbreeding depression in F2 suggested that susceptibility was dominant over resistance in crosses susceptible x resistant and susceptible × tolerant, while resistance was dominant over susceptibility in the cross tolerant × resistant. The variation patterns of foliar damage and stem tunnelling in parents, F1 and F2 progenies suggested that they are different and are independently inherited. Both resistance and tolerance mechanisms are operating in sorghum resistance to stem-borers and these mechanisms are independently inherited. Estimates of heritability (broad-sense), genetic coefficient of variation and expected genetic advance, indicated that the cross Serena (tolerant) x IS 2146 (resistant) provides maximum chances of selecting resistant and tolerant plants in the segregating populations. Recurrent selection (population breeding) is suggested to improve the level of stem-borer resistance and tolerance and yield in sorghum.

A random sample of 90 small scale cotton growers was selected and interviewed in three target areas, to investigate the perceptions of farmers towards cotton insect pest management in Zambia. Information is given on farmers control practices, their perceptions of insect damage and the effectiveness of control. All farmers interviewed were knowledgeable about the common insect pests of cotton. The American bollworm (Heliothis armigera), red bollworm (Diparopsis castanea), and aphids (Aphis gossypii) were reported to be the worst pests. Some farmers use more insecticide applications than is locally recommended probably because they overestimate potential losses. Many farmers felt that the insecticides they use (pyrethroids) are very effective against pests. In some cases, the ED formulation of cypermethrin was reported to be more effective than EC formulations. The commonly practised nonchemical methods of insect control are growing cotton in rotation with other crops and destruction of cotton plants after harvest. Only a few farmers were aware of the role of biological control and the significance of weeding in cotton pest management. Many farmers inspected their crops to decide the timing of spray applications but did not follow the recommended scouting methods.

We studied the distribution of wild Mediterranean fruit flies, Ceratias capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) in different environments of trimedlure-baited Jackson traps during high fall season populations in Southern Egypt. We found that 98% of females attracted to within aim radius of standard trimedlure (TML)-baited Jackson traps remained on the surrounding foliage without approaching the trap. Also about 30 % of males aggregated there, calling and competing for matings with approaching females. The closest mating occurred 25 cm from a standard trap. The nearest lek formation away from a trap was observed at a distance of 2 m on the same trap tree. The highest captures of males were recorded in the morning after male calling on the foliage reached its daily peak. Jackson traps baited with both protein hydrolyzate and TML on cotton wicks caught as many males, but significantly more females than traps with TML only.
