A triple-frequency operated concentric annular ring microstrip antenna which is single fed is presented. The proposed antenna with three concentric annular rings and two symmetrical notches on its outer ring and having a cross slot in its ground surface shows triple band at resonance frequency 1.22760, 1.57542, and 2.18 GHz, respectively. At the first two bands (GPS L2 and GPS L1), circular polarization characteristic is observed and the third band observes linear polarization finding its application in Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS). The complete dimension of the antenna designed and fabricated is only 51.6 × 51.6 × 1.6 mm3. Experimental results depict the proposed antenna gain of 3.31, 3.55, and 3.50 dBi in three bands, respectively, and closely matches with the theoretical results.

A new type of closed square ring decoupling structure is proposed in this letter, which can effectively reduce the coupling of antennas. The designed antenna is composed of two elliptical monopoles and a common ground loaded with a broadband parasitic decoupling structure. Considering the impedance matching, each antenna element is changed from the original rectangular microstrip feed to a tapered microstrip feed and etched a circular slot on the elliptical monopole patch. By comparison with the original antenna without any decoupling structure, through loading the broadband decoupling structure on the ground, the antenna isolation is improved by 10 dB in most frequency bands. Comparing simulation and measurement results, the antenna achieves better than 25 dB isolation over the whole operating band (3.3–12 GHz). By manufacturing and testing the antenna designed in this article, the excellent performance parameters obtained also prove that the antenna can be used in portable devices.

An efficient analysis of time-modulated array (TMA) toward realizing less-attenuating radiation patterns with simultaneously suppressed sidelobe and sidebands is presented in this paper. In this framework, an optimal outer element-controlled time sequence is derived. The proposed time scheme, along with optimized array excitations, is profitably applied for the desired solution. TMAs are considered unconventional alternatives to the phased arrays. The desired array radiation features can be attained by periodically enabling and disabling the array elements through high-speed switches. Despite the advantages of architectural simplicity and real-time reconfigurability of periodic time sequences, time-domain antenna arrays inherently generate unavoidable sideband radiations (SRs). The undesired SRs obtained at multiple harmonics around the carrier frequency of the array resembles power loss in unintended directions. This paper aims to minimize the SRs as well as the sidelobe level (SLL) for an efficient analysis of time-modulated linear array (TMLA) with high-directive radiation patterns. The starting instants and the period of on-times are optimized to generate a unique shifted time scheme for the edge elements of the TMLA to reduce the sideband levels (SBLs). The array excitations and the uniform spacing between the elements are also optimized together with the shifted time scheme for the coveted solution. Other methods of suppressing SLLs and SBLs with shifted pulse schemes and sub-sectioned pulse schemes are also presented for a fair comparison. Modified versions of the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) are applied for the desired solutions. The optimal results attained by wavelet mutation-based novel PSO is compared with the conventional PSO and the modified novel PSO-based results. The representative results are reported, and the superior performance abilities of the proposed method compared to other published studies are assessed.

This review paper explores the potential use of the planar miniaturized antenna for wireless capsule endoscopy application: one of the promising fields in the current era. The paper highlights the design strategy, various optimization techniques with respect to system realization, material compatibility issues and finally the mandatory EM radiation effect analysis for the said application. It compares amongst various currently reported structures in context with different performance metrics. Inherent challenges of this emerging field of bio-medical engineering have also been detailed here along with futuristic approaches for enhancing the throughput.

Designing miniaturized multiband antennas to cover both the 5G new radio frequencies (FR1 and FR2) simultaneously is a challenge for wireless communication researchers. This paper presents two antenna designs : a dual-band printed antenna of size 18 × 16 × 0.285 mm3 operating at FR1–5.8 GHz and FR2–28 GHz and a triple-band printed antenna with dimensions 30 × 25 × 0.543 mm3 operating at FR1–3.5 GHz and 5.8 GHz (sub-6 GHz microwave frequency bands) and FR2–28 GHz (mm-wave frequency band). The final projected triple-band antenna has a compact size with an impedance bandwidth of 12.71%, 11.32%, and 18.3% at 3.5 GHz, 5.8 GHz, and 28 GHz, respectively with the corresponding gain of 1.86 dB, 2.55 dB, and 4.41 dB. The measured radiation characteristics of the fabricated prototypes show that the proposed designs are suitable for trendy 5G-RFID and mobile Internet of things (IoT) applications.

A continuously tunable Ku-band waveguide diplexer is proposed in this paper. This diplexer is based on a hybrid coupler topology and is composed of an input filter centered at 11.9 GHz with a 200 MHz bandwidth, a pair of ladder-type hybrid couplers, and a pair of tunable filters. This diplexer can provide two bandpass channels (channels 1 and 2) that can continuously go from a state where the bandwidths of channels 1 and 2 are maximum (up to 140 MHz) and minimum (down to 40 MHz), respectively, to another configuration where the bandwidth of channel 1 is the largest and the bandwidth of channel 2 is the narrowest. We propose a tunable filter based on TE012 mode circular cavities that are perturbed by low-loss dielectric inserts to obtain such performance. The resonant frequency of these cavities can be continuously tuned between 11.8 and 12 GHz due to the linear movement of the dielectric perturber. The design process for these components is presented and a breadboard device has been manufactured and measured to prove the concept. Different measured configurations of the diplexer are demonstrated, showing that the 200 MHz operating bandpass between 11.8 and 12 GHz can be efficiently separated into two tunable channels. The measured bandwidth of channels 1 and 2 in the manufactured diplexer can be tuned from 135 to 40 MHz (and vice versa) while maintaining an average guard band between the channels of approximately 26 ± 7 MHz. The obtained bandwidth tuning ratios are 3.2 for the highest channel and 3.1 for the lowest channel.

This paper presents a compact dual-band filtering antenna without extra employing of filter structures. The antenna is designed using a planar dual-composite right/left-handed (D-CRLH) transmission line unit cell, where the filtering function is achieved through current cancellation between the D-CRLH resonators. The antenna is designed to function at 3.0 and 5.1 GHz, which can serve different WLAN applications. The antenna is a co-planar waveguide fed with a very compact size of only 30 × 16 mm2. Compared to the conventional patch antenna, the antenna size is only 17% at 3.0 GHz and 31% at 5.1 GHz. Despite the small size, the antenna preserves a good omni-directional radiation pattern at the two resonant frequencies with a measured realized gain of 2 and 2.7 dB, respectively. At the stopband in-between the two resonant bands, the reflection coefficient is almost 0 dB at 4.25 GHz and complete non-radiation is proved with a −11 dB measured realized gain. The different antenna filtering functions are verified by full-wave simulation and measurements.

The dumbbell-shaped longitudinal slot antennas are employed as a replacement for the round-ended longitudinal slot antennas. Each dumbbell-shaped slot is excited by an iris and a septum that have offsets from the waveguide centerlines. All the slots are also cut along the waveguide centerlines. It is demonstrated that the resonant length of the proposed dumbbell-shaped slot antennas is much smaller than the round-ended longitudinal slot antennas. Hence, the end-to-end spacings between the adjacent radiating slots as well as the end-to-end spacings between the coupling and the radiating slots increased noticeably in comparison with the arrays consist of the round-ended longitudinal slot antennas. This fact indicates that one can neglect the mutual coupling between the neighboring slots that are associated with the exciting higher-order modes at the slot positions. To better demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed dumbbell-shaped slot antennas, a planar array antenna consists of the proposed dumbbell-shaped slot antennas have been designed, implemented, and tested. The measurement and the simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed slot antennas.

The design, analysis, fabrication, and testing of a four-port multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is reported in this paper for automotive communications. The MIMO antenna is constructed using the basic antenna element exploiting a slot geometry. Two such antennas are developed on the same microwave laminate to develop a two-port MIMO antenna. Two such microwave laminates are interlocked to create the four-port MIMO scheme. The most distinct feature of the proposed architecture is that the inter-port isolation is well-taken care without the need for an external decoupling unit. The four-port MIMO antenna has an overall volume of 32 × 15 × 32 mm3. The prototype MIMO antenna is fabricated and the measurements are carried out to validate the simulation results. The antenna offers ultra-wideband (UWB) characteristics covering the frequency range of 2.8–9.5 GHz. The average boresight gain of the antenna ranges from 3.2 to 5.41 dBi with the peak gain at 8 GHz. The simulated efficiency of the antenna is greater than 73% within the operating bandwidth. The MIMO parameters such as envelope correlation coefficient, diversity gain, and mean effective gain are evaluated and presented. The appropriateness of the proposed antenna for deployment in the shark fin housing of the present-day automobiles is verified using on-car performance estimation.

Conventional multiband antennas suffer from strong interactions among different operating frequencies, complex configurations, low bandwidth, and reduced efficiencies. A design concept for a multibeam multiband antenna in wireless devices is proposed in this paper. The design concept provides a promising approach to augment transmission and reception. The principle of design involves a primary radiating element embedded in a triplate conformation which excites a passive array of multiple frequency secondary radiators, forming a frequency selective structure in triplate (FSST). The higher order mode behavior of the parent antenna characterizes the design of FSST placed in its nearfield. The mathematical modeling and analysis of the design methodology is also presented. As proof of concept, the proposed design methodology is validated with simulations and experiments at four unlicensed communication bands and the results are compared.

This study presents a novel configuration of a cuboidal quad-port ultra-wideband multiple-input and multiple-output antenna with WLAN rejection characteristics. The designed antenna consists of four F-shaped elements backed by a partial ground plane. A 50 Ω microstrip line is used to feed the proposed structure. The geometry of the suggested antenna exhibits an overall size of 23 × 23 × 19 mm3, and the antenna produces an operational bandwidth of 7.6 GHz (3.1–10.7 GHz). The notched band characteristic at 5.4 GHz is accomplished by loading a pair of spiral electromagnetic bandgap structures over the ground plane. Besides this, other diversity features such as envelope correlation coefficient, and diversity gain are also evaluated. Furthermore, the proposed antenna system provides an isolation of −15 dB without using any decoupling structure. Therefore, to validate the reported design, a prototype is fabricated and characterized. The overall simulated performance is observed in very close agreement with it's measured counterpart.

Current designs of space IMUX filters are based on dual-mode circular waveguide cavities, on dielectric resonators or, at the lower end of the frequency spectrum, on coaxial resonators. This paper presents a new kind of IMUX filter aimed at high operating frequencies (Ka, Q, and V bands) which was developed in the frame of an ESA funded study named KALOS-DEVAQ. The new filter implements a quasi-elliptic frequency response and is characterized by simple geometry. The mechanical structure is composed of stacked metallic plates and it is well suited to be manufactured, at a low cost, with high accuracy. Despite the lower unloaded Q factor, the new configuration allows achieving a comparable flatness of insertion loss and group delay, thanks to the application of the pre-distortion technique. The increased insertion loss does not affect the system performances because it can be compensated by the amplification stages in the RF chain.

This paper explores an original study of bandpass (BP) negative group delay (NGD) robustness applied to the ring-stub passive circuit. The proof of concept (PoC) circuit is constituted by a ring associated with the open-end stub implemented in microstrip technology. An innovative experimental setup of a temperature room containing the NGD PoC connected to a vector network analyzer is described. Then, the electrothermal data of S-parameters are measured by varying the ambient or room temperature range from 20 to 60°C, i.e. 40°C maximal variation. The empirical results of the group delay (GD), transmission and reflection coefficient mappings versus the couple (temperature, frequency) highlight how the temperature affects the BP NGD responses. An innovative electrothermal calibration technique by taking into account the interconnection cable influence is developed. The electrothermal robustness analysis is carried out by variations of the NGD center frequency, cut-off frequencies and value in function of the temperature.

All textile integrated dual-band monopole antenna with an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) is proposed. The proposed design operates at 2.4 and 5.8 GHz for wearable medical applications to monitor the heartbeat. A flexible and low-profile E- shaped CPW dual-band textile antenna is integrated with a 4 × 4 dual-band textile AMC reflector to enhance the gain and specific absorption rate (SAR). The SAR is reduced by nearly 95% at both 1 and 10 g. The design was measured on the body with a 2 mm separation. The simulated and measured results appear in high agreement in the case of with and without AMC array integration. The measurement was performed in the indoor environment and in an anechoic chamber to validate the design based on reflection coefficient and radiation pattern measurements.

This article introduces a cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (CDRA) fed with a rhombic ring-shaped tapered feed for Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) applications. The proposed hybrid MIMO CDRA resonates at four frequency bands 2.5, 5.09, 6.8, and 9.0 GHz with isolation levels of 22, 34.22, 30.55, and 18.55 dB. Isolation enhancements are achieved by introducing “L” shaped slots on the partial ground plane. Parametric analysis is performed to validate the optimized dimensions of the tapered feed without and with DRA and defected ground structure. Diversity performance is examined by using envelope correlation coefficient and diversity gain. The proposed antenna operates in the S, C, and X-bands and is suitable for RF communication mobile broadband services, Wi-Fi, radar, and satellite applications. Good agreement is observed between simulated and measured results.

In this article a compact circular monopole antenna is represented with dimensions of 38.87 × 24.00 × 1.60 mm3 applicable for WLAN/Wi-MAX and satellite band rejection characteristics. The impedance bandwidth is 9.42 GHz (3.12–12.54 GHz) for the final antenna with an equivalent fractional bandwidth of about 120.31%, producing triple notched bands centered at 3.95, 5.20 and 8.90 GHz with assistance of Archimedean spiral slot and incorporation of defected ground structure allowing WLAN (5.2 GHz), WiMAX (3.5 GHz) and higher satellite X-band (8.5 GHz) filtering abilities. Simulations of the antenna are performed to attain preferable return loss properties as well as gain and omni-directional radiation patterns. The suggested antenna yields a peak gain of about 7.46 dBi at 11.30 GHz and experimental values are in good obedience with simulated ones.

This article presents the design of an ultra-compact cavity-backed self-diplexing antenna with high isolation employing quarter-mode substrate integrated waveguide (QMSIW). The proposed antenna is constructed by using QMSIW, slot, and two 50Ω feed lines. Two eighth-mode cavity resonators are designed by inserting a slot on the top side of the rectangular substrate integrated waveguide to operate at 2.6 and 4.9 GHz for long-term evolution and public safety band applications, respectively. The proposed design allows to tune any frequency band independently by keeping other bands unaltered. The size of antenna is ultra-compact, due to the use of QMSIW cavity. The isolation between two ports is >35 dB. The antenna achieves 5.34 and 5.68 dBi peak gains at 2.6 and 4.9 GHz, respectively. The efficiency of the antenna is >85% at both frequency bands. The antenna provides more than 20.9 dB front-to-back-ratio and better than 21 dB separation between co-to-cross polarization levels. The designed antenna is validated through fabrication and measurement.

A circularly polarized stub-matched inverted L-shaped antenna for C-band applications is presented in this communication. Antenna parameters of inverted L-shape on the radiating patch and slits, notch, square strips and stub on the ground plane and the effect of these are analyzed. The proposed optimized antenna (A5: 0.54λ0 × 0.54λ0 × 0.02λ0 mm3) is selected among antennas (A1 – A5) with 5.1 GHz design frequency after simulation through high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS). Circular polarization is obtained by introducing stub/perturbation on the ground plane. By introducing stub, the highest measured (S11 < − 10 dB) impedance bandwidth of 50.9% (3.48 – 5.86 GHz) is observed amongst the reported and compared bandwidths. Peak gain of 5.32 dBi and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 16.2% (4.71 – 5.54 GHz) is reported in the present work. An antenna is useful in the entire downlink frequency (3.7 – 4.2 GHz) of the C band.

To satisfy the increasing requirements of wireless communication, a compact dual band MIMO antenna is presented in this paper. The presented antenna consists of two symmetric radiating elements operating at both 3.5 and 4.5 GHz bands. To enhance the isolation between the two radiating elements, an I-shaped decoupling structure is introduced. The measured −10 dB reflection coefficients frequency bands are 3.3–3.8 and 4.3–5.8 GHz. The measured isolation S21 between the two radiating elements are better than 15 and 17 dB at the lower and higher frequency band, respectively. The overall dimension of the proposed antenna is 50 × 22 × 1.59 mm3. The measured result indicates that the proposed antenna can be a good candidate for 5 G/WLAN wireless communication.
