A compact ultra-wideband (UWB) square and circular slot ground plane planar antenna with a modified circular patch for UWB communication is presented. This antenna has a low reflection coefficient and high gain in the range of 8.94 GHz, starting from 2.85 to 11.79 GHz. The proposed antenna demonstrates UWB behavior with electrically small dimensions of 0.18 λ0×0.14 λ0×0.015 λ0 (λ0 is the free-space wavelength at 2.85 GHz). The fractional bandwidth of the antenna is 122.1%, with stable radiations. The antenna's maximum gain stands at 2.79 dBi, and the antenna's peak efficiency stands at 72%, respectively. It is lightweight, compact, and easy to manufacture. Hence, it can be used for the complete range of UWB applications and covers Wi-Max/WLAN/ X-Band and Ku-Band.

We present a tunable planar groove gap waveguide (PGGWG) resonant cavity at Ka-band. The cavity demonstrates varactor loading and biasing without bridging wires or annular rings, as commonly is required in conventional substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) resonant cavities. A detailed co-simulation strategy is also presented, with indicative parametric tuning data. Measured results indicate a 4.48% continuous frequency tuning range of 32.52–33.98 GHz and a Qu tuning range of 63–85, corresponding to the DC bias voltages of 0–16 V. Discrepancies between simulated and measured results are analyzed, and traced to process variation in the multi-layer printed circuit board stack, as well as unaccounted varactor parasitics and surface roughness.

In this paper, an unconditionally stable time-domain method is proposed to investigate the external electromagnetic (EM) field illumination on the nonlinearly loaded transmission lines. In the proposed algorithm, the field to line coupling equations and linear/nonlinear boundary conditions are incorporated and expressed in a matrix form. The derived differential matrix equations are then discretized and solved using the proposed finite difference time domain (FDTD) method approach. The discretized nonlinear matrix equations are also solved by applying a globally convergent iterative method to ensure the stability of the method. Moreover, the experimental investigations are conducted using a transverse EM (TEM) cell for a single microstrip line and a power detector circuit as a nonlinearly loaded transmission line to confirm the accuracy and stability of the proposed method. With the merit of satisfactory accuracy and unconditional stability for the entire range of time steps, the presented approach would be applicable for analyzing the microwave linear/nonlinear circuits subjected to the external incident EM wave.

In order to encrypt/encode data based on the magnitude level of the radar cross-section (RCS), we propose an approach with a precise estimation considering the resonant characteristics of a multipatch backscatter-based chipless radio frequency identification (RFID) dedicated for chipless tags depolarization. The working principle is based on the polarization mismatch between the tag and the reader antenna to control the magnitude of the backscatter, which allows a reliable detection in real environments. We introduce in this paper a new 4-bit chipless RFID tag with an enhanced RCS, based on a triangular patch antenna with multiple resonators. Additionally, we propose an ultra-wideband impulse radar (UWB-IR)-based reader that interrogates the chipless tag with a UWB pulse, and the received backscatter was studied in both time- and frequency-domains. The antenna was operating from 4.7 to 6.1 GHz, a band allocated for RFID systems. The obtained experimental measurement results in the environment of anechoic chamber were exceptionally relevant to validate the simulation results.

This paper presents the parameter estimation of the fractal antenna array with the virtual instrument model designed in laboratory virtual instrument engineering workbench software. In this work resonant frequency, gain and voltage standing wave ratio have been used as an output parameter with the change in three input parameters such as radius of a circular patch, height of substrate, and dielectric constant of the material. Measured output parameters have been compared with neural network outputs and error has been represented in a graphical way for each output parameter of the antenna array. Along with output parameter estimation, a designing parameter such as radius of the circular patch has also been estimated with virtual instrument model and absolute error for radius has been shown in the display window of the designed model. The proposed antenna array has been fabricated and simulated results have been validated with measured results.

In this paper, a wideband ultrathin metasurface absorber is investigated. The proposed absorber comprises a periodic array of a unit cell ring structure. The ring structure and patch inside are tuned to realize the desired frequency bandwidth. The structure has a frequency bandwidth of 7.4 GHz with a center frequency of 15 GHz and fractional bandwidth of 50%. Simulated and measured results show that the absorption at normal incidence is above 90% in the frequency range of 11.3–18.7 GHz. Furthermore, the thickness of the structure is 1.6 mm. The physical mechanism of the metasurface absorber has been analyzed and justified experimentally.

A cost-effective millimeter-wave measurement setup for narrowband path loss and angle-of-arrival measurements is presented in this paper. The setup consists of ubiquitous radio-frequency lab equipment and additional low-cost components. An algorithm is developed, which improves the measurement accuracy and reduces the required measurement time. An uncertainty analysis is performed, including a noise analysis, amplifier linearity, antenna misalignment and general system impairments. A theoretical model of the received signal plus noise is developed, which is used in Monte Carlo simulations to show the impact of snapshot averaging on the uncertainty. The estimated combined uncertainty with a 95.45% confidence level is 1.1 dB at the maximum measurable path loss and 0.3 dB in the case of low path loss, where the uncertainty due to receiver noise is negligible. The measurement setup is used in outdoor specular building reflection measurements at 24.00–24.25 GHz. The measured single-building reflections show a 1–9 dB excess loss compared to the free-space path loss. The measured excess loss is 9–20 dB for double-building reflections. These results indicate that buildings could potentially be used as effective millimeter-wave specular reflectors to extend millimeter-wave coverage.

In this study, we present a comprehensive dual-band ambient radio-frequency (RF) energy harvesting system, consisting of rectenna and power management circuit, to harvest energy from 2.45 and 5.8 GHz Wi-Fi. The rectenna employs a metamaterial antenna based on a split-ring resonator, which possesses omni-directional radiation pattern at both frequencies and compact size (0.18λ × 0.25λ at 2.45 GHz). The dual-band rectifier yields the highest efficiency of 42% at 2.45 GHz and 1 dBm input power, 30% at 5.8 GHz and − 7 dBm input power. The maximum RF-DC efficiency for each band is 72% at − 5 dBm and 27% at − 2 dBm, respectively. The power management circuit, consisting of a storing capacitor and a boost converter, is integrated to produce a stable, sufficient output voltage. The energy harvesting system, with its comprehensiveness, is suitable for supplying low-power wireless sensor nodes for indoor applications.

The manuscript reports on additively-manufactured (AM) coaxial-resonator-based bandpass filters (BPFs) and RF diplexers. A monolithic integration concept using stereolithography apparatus (SLA) is proposed and discussed in detail. Coupled-resonator-based synthesis alongside full-electromagnetic-based design methods is used for the design of the monolithic filters and RF diplexers. In particular, the paper discusses a new external coupling mechanism for dual-band BPFs that allow to independently control the coupling in each of the BPF passbands. Furthermore, a novel coaxial transmission line-type T-junction is proposed for the design of single- and dual-band RF diplexers. For practical validation purposes, multiple BPF and RF diplexer prototypes were designed, manufactured and tested at S- and C-band demonstrating the applicability of the proposed concept to low-cost, low-loss and low-weight RF components with complex geometrical features.

This article presents a highly miniaturized dual-band electrically small antenna (ESA) for on-demand 3.6 and 5.8 GHz wireless applications. A partial rectangle-shaped structure is printed on the back face of the dielectric material, forming the antenna's ground (GND) plane. The radiating structure of the antenna consists of a C-shaped structure and a U-shaped ring connected to it, which is printed on the dielectric material's front face. The overall dimensions of the designed antenna are 0.160λo × 0.160λo × 0.02λo at the lowest operating frequency. The proposed antenna has a ka value of 0.56 at the lowest operating frequency, which is 3.59 GHz. Thus, the proposed antenna is considered as electrically small. The characteristic mode analysis is adopted to provide a clear understanding of the antenna's resonance behavior. The antenna has been fabricated and the simulation results were validated through measurements. Good agreement between simulated and measured results was obtained. Dual-band operation at 3.62 and 5.75 GHz was achieved, according to the measured reflection coefficient. The proposed antenna offers an adequate performance in terms of gain and efficiency, based on simulation and measurement results. Because of these characteristics, the antenna is well-suited to new wireless applications.

This paper presents a polarization-independent 11-bit chipless RFID tag based on frequency-selective surface which has been designed for encoding and relative humidity (RH) sensing applications. The 10 exterior U-shaped resonators are used for item encoding whereas Kapton has been incorporated with the interior resonator for RH sensing. This radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag operates in S- and C-frequency bands. The proposed design offers enhanced fractional bandwidth up to 88% with the density of 4.46 bits/cm2. Both single- and dual-layer tags have been investigated. The simulated results are in good agreement with measured results and a comparison with existing literature is presented to show the performance. Simple geometry, high code density, large frequency signature bandwidth, high magnitude bit, high radar cross-section, and angular stability for more than 75° are the unique outcomes of the proposed design. In addition, RH sensing has been achieved by integrating the Kapton on the same RFID tag.

A compact coplanar waveguide-fed monopole antenna is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna is composed of three monopole branches. In order to achieve the miniaturization, the longest branch was bent. The antenna is printed on an FR4 dielectric substrate, having a compact size of 0.144λ0 × 0.105λ0 × 0.003λ0 at its lowest resonant frequency of 900 MHz. The multiband antenna covers five frequency bands: 820–990 MHz, 1.87–2.08 GHz, 2.37–2.93 GHz, 3.98–4.27 GHz, and 5.47–8.9 GHz, which covers the entire radio frequency identification bands (860–960 MHz, 2.4–2.48 GHz, and 5.725–5.875 GHz), Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) bands (890–960 MHz and 1.850–1.990 GHz), WLAN bands (2.4–2.484 GHz and 5.725–5.825 GHz), WiMAX band (2.5–2.69 GHz), X-band satellite communication systems (7.25–7.75 GHz and 7.9–8.4 GHz), and sub 6 GHz in 5G mobile communication system (3.3–4.2 GHz and 4.4–5.0 GHz). Also, the antenna has good radiation characteristics in the operating band, which is nearly omnidirectional. Both the simulated and experimental results are presented and compared and a good agreement is established. The proposed antenna operates in five frequency bands with high gain and good radiation characteristics, which make it a suitable candidate in terminal devices with multiple communication standards.

In the proposed research paper, a novel compact, ultra-wideband electronically switchable dual-band omnidirectional to directional radiation pattern microstrip planar printed rectangular monopole antenna (PRMA) has been presented. The proposed antenna system has an optimum size of 0.26 λ0 × 0.28 λ0. A combination of radiators, reflectors, and two symmetrical grounds does place on the same layer of the rectangular microstrip PRMA. The frequency agility and the radiation pattern from omnidirectional to directional are achieved using two SMD PIN diodes (SMP1340-04LF). The directional radiation patterns with 180° phase shifts are achieved at the C-band frequency spectrum. The parametric study of the proposed antenna system was performed for different design parameters, and the antenna characteristics were analyzed. An antenna prototype is fabricated using the printed circuit board etching method by using RMI UV laser etching and cutting tools. The measurements of the proposed antenna are conducted in an anechoic chamber to validate the simulations. There are three states of operations due to two SMD PIN diodes being used in switching circuits. In state-I, the proposed antenna radiates at 6.185 GHz (5.275–6.6 75 GHz) in the Ф = 270° direction with a gain of 2.1 dBi, whereas in state-II, it radiates at 5.715 GHz (5.05–6.8 GHz) in the Ф = 90° direction with a gain of 2.1 dBi. In state-III, the antenna exhibits the X-band frequency with center frequency at 9.93 GHz (8.845–10.49 GHz), and the omnidirectional pattern offers a gain of 4.1 dBi. The features of the proposed antenna are suitable for high-speed wireless sensor network communication in industries such as chemical reactors in oil and gas and pharmaceuticals. It is also well suited for IoT and 5G-sub-6-GHz applications.

We present the design steps of a coaxial dipole antenna for telemetry applications under extreme conditions of accelerations and centrifugal forces. Both, electromagnetic and mechanical designs are explained, as well as performance compromises that have to be made between both domains. The experimental results are given in the following part of the article, before some details on the instrumented firings and the receiving station; at last a few examples of projectiles equipped with such antennas are presented.

In this paper, a small ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with two stop bands by a compact electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) cell loaded with two new open meander slots is presented. With the coupling of the EBG cell to the feedline, the stop bands are formed. The designed EBG cell is a mushroom type that has the advantages of being able to independently control the stop bands, high responsiveness selectivity of stop bands, easy switching, the need for fewer EBG cells, and low impact on the working characteristics of the antenna. To have a better understanding of the proposed EBG mechanism, characteristic mode analysis is used. The size reduction of the suggested antenna is obtained by halving the reference antenna relative to the axis of symmetry. The measurement results for −10 dB adaptation are from 2.73 to 13 GHz with stop bands at 3.51 GHz (12.9%) and 5.34 GHz (14.1%). The radiation behavior of the minimized antenna is similar to that of a reference antenna. Minimized UWB antenna with transmission function and group delay with small variations in the operating frequency range is suitable for small multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) and diversity systems.

In this work, a printed ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna has been proposed exhibiting band notch characteristics. The proposed design covers the entire UWB band except for the 3.5 GHz band providing the band notch for the WiMAX band. This design consists of two-quarter elliptical patches placed symmetrically over the FR4 substrate. The elliptical shape of the patch is responsible for the UWB band achieved. The slot has been created on the optimized patch area to achieve the desired characteristics providing a notch for the WiMAX band. The slot in the patch is so perfectly designed that it gives the patch a perfect shape of butterfly wings. After designing, the proposed antenna was simulated and then fabricated. The fabricated and simulated results are in close agreement with each other which shows, the proposed UWB antenna is good enough for biomedical applications.

In this paper, a compact 4-port band-notched multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) antenna with asymmetric coplanar strip (ACS) feed is presented for ultra-wide band (UWB) applications. The MIMO antenna is comprised of four semi-elliptical radiators with ACS feed for UWB applications and it is printed on inexpensive FR4 substrate of size 48 × 52 mm2 with ɛr = 4.4 and 1.6 mm height. The impedance characteristics of the suggested MIMO antenna ranges from 2.7 to 11 GHz with a band-notched behavior from 3 to 4 GHz to reduce the interception with WiMAX applications, and the isolation level over the achieved band is more than 20 dB between any two adjacent elements. Moreover, the radiation pattern of the proposed UWB antenna is almost omnidirectional with an average realized gain of 3.5 dBi over the entire achieved frequency band. The proposed ACS-fed antenna is confirmed by fabricating and measuring it's impedance and radiation characteristics. Finally, good consistency between simulation and measured outcomes is obtained confirming the validity of the MIMO antenna for real-life UWB wireless systems.

The novel acoustic transversal topology has demonstrated to be a potential candidate for the development of the next generation of communication filters. The major asset of this topology is its capacity to achieve any filter response without the detriment of limited electro-acoustic coupling. Additionally, this topology prompts for an easy connection of different filters to create multiband and multiplexing responses. This study recalls and further details on the design of multiplexers based on transversal topology using bulk acoustic wave (BAW) or surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators. An important practical aspect of this topology is the need of a BALUN stage at one port of the filter.

The use of the transversal topology is then applied to another type of acoustic resonator configuration, coupled resonator filter (CRF). Such a resonator configuration offers control over the phase of each transversal path, allowing us to eliminate the BALUN stage. CRF resonators are modeled by means of a different circuit model than BAW or SAW, which calls for a new synthesis procedure. This paper describes the synthesis approach and circuit transformation for the development of multiplexers based on the transversal arrangement of the CRF resonators. An example of a fully simulated 9-plexer is provided to verify this procedure.

An analysis about the backscattering characteristics of a metamaterial coated magnetodielectric sphere covered with a metasurface has been presented. The effects of various types of metamaterial coatings and surface reactances of lossless metasurface upon the backscattering cross-section of a metamaterial coated magnetodielectric sphere covered with a metasurface have been studied. It is shown that the negligible backscattering cross-section from a double near-zero metamaterial coated magnetodielectric sphere can be enhanced significantly by using specific types of lossless metasurfaces. These types of enhanced backscattering cross-section find applications in the radar detection problems. The proposed theory is also extended to the lossy double negative metamaterial coated magnetodielectric sphere covered with a lossless metasurface. During the study, it is found that for a specific part of the lossy double negative metamaterial bandwidth, two specific types of lossless metasurfaces can be used to reduce the backscattering cross-section as compared to the backscattering cross-section of a lossy double negative metamaterial coated magnetodielectric sphere without metasurface.

In this paper, an ultra-compact implantable antenna for biomedical applications is proposed. The proposed implanted meandered compact patch antenna is implanted inside the body at a depth of 2 mm. The proposed antenna was designed with Roger RO3003 (ɛr = 3) as substrate with an overall size of dimensions 5 × 5 × 0.26 mm3. The radiating element is a square patch antenna with different size rectangular slots and coaxial feeding. The proposed implantable antenna resonates at 2.45 GHz (from 2.26 to 2.72 GHz) frequency with a bandwidth of 460 MHz and a gain of −22.6 dB. The specific absorption rate has been considered for health care considerations, and the result is within the limits of the federal communication commission. The measured and simulated scattering parameters are compared, and good agreements are achieved. The proposed antenna is simulated and investigated for biomedical applications suitability.
