Broadband transitions are presented in this paper for capacitively grounded coplanar waveguide to coupled microstrip (CMS) lines. These transitions are realized on both thick Rogers RO3003 substrate (thickness of 10 mils) and a thin benzocyclobutene (BCB) polymer film (thickness of 20 µm). A flat bandwidth of 4–20 GHz and 3.2 to over 40 GHz are measured for the RO3003 and BCB polymer substrates, respectively. These performances are obtained without making via-hole in the substrate or patterning the bottom ground plane, which makes this broadband transition easier to fabricate compared with the via-hole-based grounded CPW–CMS transitions.

The correlation coefficient (ρ) is an important metric for the evaluation of multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems because it describes the relationship between the channels in a particular propagation environment. Highly correlated channels will degrade the MIMO system performance. Various methods to calculate ρ are analyzed in this work using three different types of antennas with different efficiencies and radiating properties. While the field-based method for finding ρ gives the most accurate results and should be used all the time. It is independent of antenna efficiency. The the S-parameter-based method might give reasonable results only when the antenna efficiency is very high and the patterns are separated in space, but in most cases, it underestimates ρ values and thus is not a reliable method and should be avoided. Incorporating the antenna efficiency can improve the ρ estimates using the S-parameters method under some specific conditions. The equivalent circuit method provides reasonable results for symmetric antenna structures only, and is the most complex in formulation. As part of the evaluation, two existing methods incorporating the radiation efficiency of the antennas are generalized to N-ports for the first time. Although less accurate than the field-based method, these extensions allow the evaluation of ρ for N-port antennas using only the radiation efficiency and the S-parameters of the antenna. The effect of the beam tilts on ρ estimation is investigated for the first time.

A novel design of planar dual-band microstrip crossover operating at small and large frequency ratios is presented. These features of the proposed dual-band crossover are achieved by a cross-shaped transmission line. To obtain the dual-band characteristics, the required closed form design formulas are computed using the ABCD matrix method. Based on the design formulas, the realizable small and large band ratios are calculated as 1.65–2.14 and 4.1–8.76, respectively. To validate the computed band ratios, three examples of dual-band crossovers are presented. Finally, two prototypes of dual-band crossover working at smaller and larger frequency ratios are fabricated and tested. The fabricated dual-band crossovers exhibit good return loss and isolation of over 20 dB with minimal insertion loss.

A methodology is presented to predict odd-mode instability in power amplifiers under output mismatch effects, as in the case of amplifiers connected to an antenna. This kind of instability is often observed in multi-device configurations, due to their symmetry properties. Unlike the single-ended situation, there is a cancellation of odd multiples of the oscillation frequency at the circuit output, so there is no impact of the load-impedance values at the sideband frequencies. The odd-mode instability only depends on the impedance terminations at the fundamental frequency and its harmonic terms, and can only be detected within the circuit unstable loop, instead of the antenna-connection terminals. The possible unstable modes are related with the eigenvectors of an outer tier conversion matrix accounting for the symmetry properties of the circuit topology. Under sufficient low-pass filtering of the amplifier output network, the analysis parameters can be limited to the magnitude and phase of the reflection coefficient at the fundamental frequency. This analysis involves a computationally efficient graphical technique to detect potential instabilities and a bifurcation-detection method to determine the instability boundaries in the Smith chart. The two main types of instability from periodic regime are considered, respectively associated with incommensurable and subharmonic oscillations. Results have been validated through pole-zero identification and experimental measurements.

In urban target localization, the presence of walls creates virtual radars (VRs), which can be exploited to aid in localization process. The fact that multipath changes with the radar locations, which are referred to as aspect dependence property, enable us to find a radar location, which reduces wall uncertainties. This paper proposes single-antenna target localization in an enclosed structure taking advantage of VRs. Using ultra-wideband signals, we can resolve the target returns and estimate the correct location by solving monostatic loci at real and VR locations. Simulation results show that the method can precisely and accurately localize the target for a wide range of timing errors.

This paper of lettering reveals about a modified Koch snowflake fractal multiband antenna for cognitive radio applications. Multiband antennas can be employed for spectrum sensing in cognitive radio. This new microstrip-modified Koch fractal antenna exhibits multiple actions in four dissimilar resonant frequencies at 3.2, 5.2, 6, and 9.5 GHz correspondingly that covers the frequency bands such as S, C, and X bands. Its multiband behavior was analyzed by designing and simulating in ADS EMDS software. Three iterations were carried out to study the performance of modified Koch snowflake fractal antenna. The outer ring and a small rectangular slot in the center of the antenna are used for 50 Ω impedance matching and to increase the number of resonant frequencies. The fractal antenna parameters such as gain, directivity, and its radiation pattern are also analyzed in this paper. The measured results show good agreement with the simulated results.

Specifications of the substrates are among the most important and problematic parameters that still do not have proper models in the design procedures of metasurfaces. In this paper, a new fast and exact algorithm based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) is presented, which makes it possible to design frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs) on various kinds of standard substrates. Also for the first time, designing FSSs on uniaxial anisotropic substrates can be easily done in short time and without any optimization algorithms. During this paper, first equivalent geometry approach (EGA) is demonstrated as a new method of preparation the ANNs. Then EGA is used to train geometry transformation ANNs. The advantage of this approach is to reduce the size of training datasets by about 98% and prevent from superfluous simulations. Hence, the time needed for training of the networks is much less than before. Numerical results are used to show that the required time for developing FSSs is <200 ms on average, and errors are <2%. For the final validation, a prototype sample of FSS is fabricated on the RO4003 substrate with 20 mil thickness. Both analytical and experimental results confirm the correctness of the predicted values.

A compact coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed wideband metamaterial-inspired antenna is designed and developed in this paper. The proposed structure is an asymmetric structure in which three rectangular stubs are employed between signal patch and CPW ground plane. It is demonstrated that these stubs provides lumped parameters of conventional epsilon-negative transmission line (ENG-TL). As an advantage of these stubs proposed antenna operates on 1.67–2.76 GHz with −10 dB impedance bandwidth of 49.2%. The proposed antenna having small electrical size of 0.17λ0 × 0.35λ0 × 0.01λ0 at fo = 2.21 GHz. The simulated average gain and radiation efficiency of the proposed antenna is 1.61 dB and 96.33% respectively throughout the bandwidth. Properties such as smaller electrical size, simpler design, consistent radiation characteristics, and ease of fabrication are making this antenna suitable for GSM, WLAN/Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and WiMAX applications.

A miniaturized substrate-integrated coaxial line (SICL) bandpass filter with improved upper stopband using asymmetrical spiral stub-loaded resonators is presented in this paper. Owing to the space-filling feature of the spiral structure, the size of the proposed filter is significantly reduced. A theoretical analysis is carried out to examine the resonance property of the proposed resonator. It is found that the frequency ratios of the second and third harmonics to the fundamental frequency can be extended to 2.86 and 4.4. Benefiting from the circuit structure and SICL technology, the designed filter has a small size, wide stopband, low crosstalk, and high-density integration ability. The measured results show that the proposed filter, with dimensions of 0.051λ0 × 0.044λ0, operates at 1.056 GHz and the 20-dB rejection band is extended to 3.94f0.

This paper proposes an efficient and fast analysis of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) components using a new approach of the iterative method called WCIP, i.e. “Wave Concept Iterative Process”. This method is based on the iterative resolution of waves between two domains. The first is the spectral domain. We use the Floquet–Bloch decomposition to describe all modes in the spectral domain. The second describes the configuration of the circuit in the spatial domain. It allows taking the exact structure according to the appropriate boundary conditions. This method permits to reduce numerical complexity. The convergence of this approach is always guaranteed. The theoretical suggested study is validated by the simulation of two different examples of SIW circuits. The obtained results are in good agreement with those of measurement and with software HFSS simulations, which prove the advantage of this method.

In this paper, we demonstrate the successful implementation of an onwafer noise parameters test set that employs an extended six-port network and a conventional noise figure analyzer. The necessary formulation that enables the calibration of the noise parameter test set as well as extraction of the noise wave correlation matrix of a two-port device under test (DUT) was tested for coaxial connector-type DUT measurement in an earlier work but not for onwafer-type DUT. Furthermore, we demonstrate the performance of this technique against data obtained from the well-known tuner method. Measurement carried out for very low-noise figure (2 dB) onwafer-type amplifier demonstrates the capability of our technique. The measured noise parameters show fluctuations in minimum noise figure, NFmin of ±0.1 dB, and in noise resistance Rn of about 2%. This test set is simple and fast leading to tremendous time- and cost-savings as well as a simplified procedure in onwafer noise parameters measurements.

An ultra-wideband (UWB) frequency-selective surface (FSS) exhibiting band rejection characteristic is presented in this paper. The proposed unit cell has the size of 14 × 14 mm2 which is approximately 0.18 × 0.18 λo, where λo corresponds to free space wavelength at the lower cut-off frequency. The proposed UWB FSS consists of a single-layer substrate and provides 20 dB attenuation level for a wide bandwidth of 7.53 GHz at the normal incidence. The proposed FSS is polarization independent and also provides angular-independent operation for the EM wave incidences of 15°, 30° and 45° with 11.5 dB attenuation over a wide range from 4 to 14 GHz.

In this letter, a passive high-selectivity dual-band filter with two controllable transmission zero (TZ) pairs is proposed, while synthesis method and control mechanism of the two TZ pairs are investigated. Specifically, by employing the magnetic/electric mixed coupling (MEMC), source–load coupling (S–L coupling) and stepped-impedance resonators, a dual-band bandpass filter with two pairs of controllable TZs is constructed. Two controllable TZ pairs can be independently adjusted by re-modifying the associated coupling structures. To validate the synthesizability and controllability of the TZ pairs, mathematical synthesis, and EM simulations are carried out. Two demonstrative filters with identical passband performance and different central TZ distributions for GSM (0.9/1.8 GHz) are designed and measured. The analysis and experimental results show that the synthesis-controllable TZ pair (fz2, fz3) introduced by MEMC can be synthesized and controlled using inline mixed coupling synthesis, and the optimization-controllable TZ pair (fz1, fz4) because of S–L coupling is controlled by S–L coupling strength optimization procedure.

In this paper, a miniaturized elevated-coplanar-waveguide-fed antenna with a slotted ground plane is proposed. This antenna has a compact size of 25 mm × 25 mm × 1.6 mm where the ground plane is reduced by etching a trapezoidal slot along with two extended slits. A −10 dB wide-impedance bandwidth of 126% ranging from 2.8 to 12.4 GHz is achieved for the proposed antenna. The proposed antenna is successfully manufactured and experimentally investigated. The measurement shows a good agreement with the simulation. The measured radiation characteristic shows a stable and nearly omnidirectional pattern over the operating bandwidth region. The effects of various parameters on the antenna performance are analyzed and discussed as well.

Patch antennas with a meandering slot and different distributions of grounded metallic vias are presented in this paper. The meandering slot is adopted to stimulate dual-band operation, while the number and position of the grounded metallic vias are suggested to achieve different radiation performances. The characteristics are analyzed in detail where we find that the existence of the vias also improves the impedance matching. Four samples are designed, where dual-band with both linear polarization, dual-band with circular- and linear-polarization, and single band with linear polarization are obtained, respectively. The samples are finally fabricated and the measurement results agree well with the simulation results.

A miniaturized tri-passband power divider integrating a power divider with two tri-band bandpass filters is presented. The short- and open-stub-loaded resonators are used in this presented power divider to implement the bandpass-filtering response. Then, the presented power divider has not only the power-dividing/combining function, but also the tri-passband filtering response. When the central frequency of the second passband is fixed, the other two passband central frequencies of the tri-band power divider can be flexibly controlled by changing the lengths of the stubs. The even- and odd-mode equivalent circuits of the proposed tri-band power divider are analyzed, and the design equations are derived, which can be used to guide the design of the presented miniaturized tri-passband power divider. The measured results agree well with the simulated ones.

A dedicated hyperthermia (HT) system was designed for tumors in intact breast extending beyond the heating depth of our superficial 434 MHz antennas, consisting of a treatment bed fitted with a 50 cm × 40 cm × 16 cm temperature controlled open water bolus. The patient lies in prone position with the breast immersed in the water positioned in front of a 34 cm × 20 cm 70 MHz waveguide operating in the TE10 mode. E-field patterns were measured in a tissue-mimicking phantom. HT was applied once a week with the 70 MHz applicator for six patients treated with thermoradiotherapy for deep lesions of recurrent breast cancer or melanoma. Two 14-sensor thermocouple thermometry probes were placed in catheters to monitor the invasive temperature. Results: Phantom measurements showed sufficient penetration depth up to 10 cm depth. The combination of 300–900 W antenna power and a water temperature of 42°C was well tolerated for the entire session of 1 h and resulted in good tumor temperatures with T90 = 39.8°C, T50 = 41.1°C, and T10 = 42.2°C. No toxicity or complaints were associated with the heating. A water mattress and other measures were needed to assure a comfortable position throughout the treatment. Conclusion: the 70 MHz breast applicator system performed well and tumor temperatures were good.

In this paper, a solid co-planar waveguide-fed fractal metamaterial antenna is offered. The proposed design consists of Sierpinski gasket iterations and a complementary triangular split ring resonator (CTSRR) loaded underneath the substrate, which is accountable for pull off multiband uniqueness and resolve good impedance identical. In sketch to hassle multiresonant frequency band facet, these CTSRR are entrenched reverse side of the substrate. The anticipated antenna with a dense dimension of 12 × 14 × 1.6 mm3 is fabricated and tested. The testing result designates that the projected design has −10 dB of 5.72, 14.3, and 16.06 GHz, respectively, and covers 5.72 GHz wireless local area network, 14.3 GHz fixed satellite, and 16.06 GHz International Telecommunication Union (ITU) band. It has fine emission uniqueness for jointly E-plane and H-plane in all the preferred occurrence bands and produce superior performance compared with the offered antenna intend in the prose. The loaded CTSRR construction recital is validated all the way during negative permeability pulling out and assorted parametric study.

A compact printed 2 × 2 ultrawideband (UWB) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna with a single circular patch as a common radiator for both the antenna elements is presented in this paper. A single circular patch is excited by two tapered CPW feeds for dual polarization. To improve the isolation between two ports, a rectangular slot of dimension L1 × W1 is created in the radiator. The UWB MIMO antenna has impedance bandwidth of 3–12 GHz with a isolation better than 17 dB between the two ports. The envelope correlation coefficient and the capacity loss are evaluated to ensure the good diversity performance of UWB MIMO antenna. The antenna has a compact size of 45 × 45 mm2 and is fabricated on low cost FR4 substrate and measured using Agilent VNA. The simulated and measured results show that the proposed UWB antenna is good candidate for UWB MIMO applications.

Electromagnetic characteristics of the E-plane T-junction for two rectangular waveguides using resonant coupling between the waveguide sections were studied by mathematical modeling. The problem of coupling between infinite and semi-infinite rectangular waveguides through a resonant slot in the end-wall of the semi-infinite waveguide in the presence of resonant monopole is solved in a strict electrodynamic formulation. The monopole with variable surface impedance is placed parallel to the narrow walls at an arbitrary position inside the infinite waveguide. The problem is solved analytically by the generalized method of induced electro-magneto-motive forces. Impedance vibrator inclusions with variable electro-physical parameters have been analyzed as control elements for waveguide junctions. To this purpose energy characteristics of the junction in the single-mode regime of the both waveguides, and also in multi-mode regime of the semi-infinite waveguide is investigated. The results may be useful for development of variety antennas and waveguide devices, which involves waveguide junctions.
