Spherulitic concretions are very rare among carbonate concretions that generally consist of micritic carbonate. The occurrence of spherulitic concretions in Cambro-Ordovician black shales of unknown stratigraphic age on a mid-channel island in the St Lawrence Estuary in Quebec is a new example in addition to only three hitherto reported occurrences of spherulitic carbonate concretions. Their origin is still poorly understood. These concretions occur in close association with, and show various transitions to, cone-in-cone structure. The spherules, measuring 0.5 to 12 mm in diameter, consist of intergrown fine fibres of ferroan calcite and quartzine, pointing to the formation of the concretions below the sulfate-reduction zone. A phenomenological theory of spherulitic crystallization relates the thickness δ of an impurity-rich layer in front of impurity-rejecting growing crystals to the impurity-diffusion coefficient D and the growth velocity G of the crystal by δ = D/G. In spherulite-forming environments, extremely small values of δ (in the order of <10−4 cm) in conjunction with cellulation lead to spherulitic fibre growth. The theory of spherulitic crystallization is here applied to sedimentary deposits for the first time. The intimate association of calcite and quartzine in the concretions requires a chemical change from alkaline to acidic conditions, which occurs below the carbonate-reduction zone owing to the dissolution of sponge spicules or radiolarians. The transition from spherulite to the silica-free cone-in-cone structure occurs when the silica reservoir that acted as an impurity is exhausted in the crystallization process.

A form of natural rock marking is described from a site on the coast of Fujian in China. Having been defined as rock art, it has now been found to be natural, caused by the release of massive kinetic energy in collisions between large blocks of granite. A combination of compressive and tensile stresses has yielded geometric changes to the fabric of the rock, and the selective weathering of modified parts of the rock has produced visually distinct, large surface markings resembling a rising Sun. The processes involved are considered in the light of research into the similar effects of explosives on rock.

In contrast to the Norwegian and Danish sectors, where significant hydrocarbon reserves were found in chalk reservoirs, limited studies exist analysing the chalk evolution in the Dutch part of the North Sea. To provide a better understanding of this evolution, a tectono-sedimentary study of the Late Cretaceous to Early Palaeogene Chalk Group in the northern Dutch North Sea was performed, facilitated by a relatively new 3D seismic survey. Integrating seismic and biostratigraphic well data, seven chronostratigraphic units were mapped, allowing a reconstruction of intra-chalk geological events.

The southwestward thickening of the Turonian sequence is interpreted to result from tilting, and the absence of Coniacian and Santonian sediments in the western part of the study area is probably the result of non-deposition. Seismic truncations show evidence of a widespread inversion phase, the timing of which differs between the structural elements. It started at the end of the Campanian followed by a second pulse during the Maastrichtian, a new finding not reported before. After subsidence during the Maastrichtian and Danian, renewed inversion and erosion occurred at the end of the Danian. Halokinesis processes resulted in thickness variations of chalk units of different ages.

In summary, variations in sedimentation patterns in the northern Dutch North Sea relate to the Sub-Hercynian inversion phase during the Campanian and Maastrichtian, the Laramide inversion phase at the end of the Danian, and halokinesis processes. Additionally, the Late Cretaceous sea floor was characterized by erosion through contour bottom currents at different scales and resedimentation by slope failures.

Palaeogeography is the representation of the past surface of the Earth. It provides the spatial context for investigating how the Earth evolves through time, how complex processes interact and the juxtaposition of spatial information. In hydrocarbon exploration, palaeogeographies have been used to map and investigate the juxtaposition, distribution and quality of play elements (source, reservoir, seal and trap), as boundary conditions for source-to-sink analysis, climate modelling and lithofacies retrodiction, but most commonly as the backdrop for presentations and montages. This paper demonstrates how palaeogeography has been and can be used within an exploration workflow to help mitigate exploration risk. A comprehensive workflow for building palaeogeographies is described which is designed to provide a standard approach that can be applied to a range of tasks in exploration and academia. This is drawn from an analysis of the history of palaeogeography and how it has been applied to exploration in the past and why. Map applications, resolution and content depend on where in the exploration and production (E&P) cycle the map is used. This is illustrated here through three case studies, from the strategic decisions of global new ventures exploration to the more detailed basin and petroleum analyses of regional asset teams evaluating basins and plays. Through this, the paper also addresses three commonly asked questions: (1) How can I use palaeogeography in my workflow? (2) How reliable are the maps? (3) How do I build a palaeogeography?

The distribution of joints, veins and shear fractures in the Montagna dei Fiori overturned anticline is here reported. Two joint sets, longitudinal and transverse to the NNW–SSE anticline axial trend, and a conjugate system of shear fractures, are recognized. The transverse and longitudinal joint sets have a pre-folding development likely related to the foreland/foredeep flexure. The transverse joints were reopened during layer-parallel shortening along with the development of the shear fractures. Then, during syn-folding outer-arc extension and hinge-line culmination fold-axial parallel extension, both the longitudinal and transverse joints were enhanced and reactivated, respectively.

The Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion (SPICE) is globally distributed in late Cambrian sedimentary records but controversially heterogeneous in its magnitudes. Here we use multiple geochemical proxies to investigate the late Cambrian carbonates from the Tangwangzhai section in North China, which were deposited in a shallow coastal environment with three depositional sequences (S1–S3). Each sequence comprises a transgressive systems tract (TST) and a highstand systems tract (HST). The REE + Y and trace element records are consistent with the depositional condition and indicate that terrigenous influence was more significant in the TST than HST. δ13Ccarb and δ34SCAS are low in the TST relative to HST, consistent with the scenario that terrigenous inputs were profoundly aggressive to seawater by introducing 13C-depleted and 34S-depleted materials. Within the TST of S2, the SPICE excursion shows a scaled-down δ13Ccarb positive shift (∼1.7 ‰) relative to its general records (∼4–6 ‰); the corresponding δ34SCAS show no positive excursion. This ‘atypical’ SPICE record is attributed to enhanced 13C-depleted and 34S-depleted terrigenous influence during the TST, which would reduce the amplitude of δ13Ccarb excursion, and even obscure δ34SCAS excursion. Meanwhile the subaerial unconformity at the base of TST would also cause a partially missing and a ‘snapshot’ preservation. Our study confirms significant local influence to the SPICE records, and further supports the heterogeneity and low sulphate concentrations of the late Cambrian seawater, because of which the SPICE records may be vulnerable to specific depositional conditions (e.g. sea-level, terrigenous input).

We focused on the Pirin–Pangeon–Thasos carbonate sequence of the Rhodope thrust system, combining Sr isotopes from marble with U–Pb dating of detrital zircons from interlayered schists with outcrop near the villages of Ilindentsi and Petrovo in Bulgaria. The youngest zircon age at Ilindentsi is 266 Ma, i.e. Middle Permian, while the youngest zircon at Petrovo yielded an age of 290 Ma, i.e. Early Permian. Strontium isotopes range from 0.707420 to 0.707653, and are consistent with a Middle Permian maximum depositional age. Middle Permian sedimentation of this carbonate platform most likely occurred along the Eurasian margin rather than the Gondwana margin.

This work characterizes Late Cretaceous calc-alkaline volcanic rocks in Gastre, Northern Patagonia, Argentina. These newly found porphyritic rocks bear an 40Ar–39Ar amphibole age of ~ 74–76 Ma, a subduction-type geochemical signature and a deep, garnet-bearing source. Extruded in a stage of low magmatic activity in the Northern Patagonian Andes (~ 41–44° S), they could represent an eastward migration of the Late Cretaceous magmatic arc that was associated with a regional compressive deformational stage in the South American margin.

Studies on type-V fulgurites are very sparse in the literature. This work reports on the characterization of natural exogenic fulgurites found at the archaeological site of Cerro de la Ermita (Tiedra, Valladolid, Spain), which was firstly a Celtiberian and then a Roman locum sacrum. Data from X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy suggest that the fulgurites consist of naquite, piroxenes, iron oxides, shocked quartz and neo-formed cristobalite.
