Aims and scope
Geological Magazine, established in 1864, is one of the oldest and best-known periodicals in the Earth Sciences. Its worldwide circulation, broad scope and high production values keep the journal at the forefront of the field. Geological Magazine publishes original papers, review articles, rapid communications and discussions about all aspects of the geosciences. It covers petrology, geochemistry, palaeontology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural geology, geophysics, and geomorphology, and it includes contributions on volcanology, marine geology, glaciology, mineral deposit geology, palaeoclimatology, palaeoceanography, geochronology, biostratigraphy, geohazards and Earth history. Special issues devoted to a specific theme or papers from a major conference are also published. Geological Magazine has a particular strength in providing a niche for interdisciplinary papers on regional geology and Earth history that would be of interest to geologists from many different specialities. Papers of any length are considered, provided that the length is justifiable.
Categories of paper
The Editors welcome original, creative, high-quality contributions suitable for the journal’s international readership. There are no page charges for papers published in Geological Magazine, however, if you request colour figures in the printed version, you will be contacted by CCC-Rightslink who are acting on our behalf to collect Author Charges. Online reproduction of colour images is free of charge.
Original Articles*
This category is intended for full-scale research studies that fit within the journal’s scope. There is no page limit, however, papers should be as concise as clarity permits. They should include an abstract of up to 250 words, accompanied by 4–7 keywords. If your article has an appendix, this should be submitted as online-only Supplementary Material.
Rapid Communications*
This category is designed for concisely written research reports for which rapid publication is considered desirable. Papers in this category should not exceed six printed pages of the journal (approximately 5000 word-equivalents, plus one-and-a-half pages of figures), including an abstract of no more than 100 words, and 4–7 keywords. Rapid Communications will follow a streamlined schedule and will normally be published within six months of submission. To meet this schedule, authors will be required to make revisions with minimal delay.
Review Articles*
This category is intended for comprehensive scholarly reviews that summarise and critically evaluate research in the addressed field and identify future implications. Review Articles may be submitted or they may be invited by the Editors. They should contain no more than 5000 words (not including references, figures or tables), a summary of up to 250 words, and 4–7 keywords. (Exceptions to the length limitation will be considered by the Editors if justified by the scope of the review.)
Discussions**
This category is intended for discussions of papers that have already been published in Geological Magazine. Discussions in this category should not exceed six printed pages of the journal (approximately 5000 word-equivalents, plus one-and-a-half pages of figures).
Book Reviews**
Book Reviews are published on selected books that fall within the journal’s scope, on topics that the Book Review Editor considers to be of general interest to readers of Geological Magazine. Book Reviews are published by the invitation of the Book Review Editor and should not be submitted independently.
* All or part of the publication costs for these article types may be covered by one of the agreements Cambridge University Press has made to support open access. For authors not covered by an agreement, and without APC funding, please see this journal's open access options for instructions on how to request an APC waiver.
** No APCs are required for these article types.
Originality and copyright
To be published in Geological Magazine, a manuscript cannot have been published previously, nor can it be under review for publication elsewhere. Papers with multiple authors are reviewed in the assumption that all authors have contributed materially to the research report, have approved the submitted manuscript and concur with its submission to Geological Magazine. Authors of papers published in the journal retain copyright but assign Cambridge University Press a license to publish, with certain rights reserved by the author. Before your manuscript can be accepted for publication in the journal, the corresponding author must send the signed license to publish form to the following address:
- Geological Magazine, Journals Production, Cambridge University Press, Shaftesbury Road, Cambridge CB2 8RU.
