Pests and diseases cause appreciable loss to tea in north-east India, but their incidence and intensity of attack vary widely from district to district, and within districts with variation in climate, elevation and the jat (seed-source) of tea. For example, blister blight is a serious disease in Darjeeling and looper catepillar is mainly localized in certain tea estates of the Assam valley. Thus recommendations regarding pesticides and their application in a particular region must be based on a thorough knowledge of the distribution of the diseases or pests in the region. This can best be obtained through sample surveys, planned in representative estates of the region and carried out with the help of trained investigators. Such surveys will also provide basic data on jat, environment and disease, as a guide to experimentation.

When a leaf absorbs radiant energy, only a small fraction is stored chemically in photosynthesis. In sunlight, this fraction is at most one-fifth of the energy in the visible spectrum, decreasing with increasing light intensity because of the finite resistance to the diffusion of carbon dioxide through the leaf to the chloroplasts. Energy absorbed but not stored in photosynthesis is dissipated by transpiration and convection.

The potential or maximum photosynthesis of a crop canopy can be estimated from a set of six parameters describing the photosynthesis-light curve of single leaves, the arrangement of leaves in the canopy, and radiation climate. Comparing estimates of potential photosynthesis with measurements of carbon dioxide exchange over a field of sugar beet, the estimated rate of respiration was 2 gm carbohydrate per m2 leaf area per day, equivalent to 44 per cent of gross photosynthesis over the whole growing season. Over the season, the foliage lost 34 per cent of incident radiation by transmission to the soil.

The potential rate of transpiration can be found from Penman's formula assuming values of external (aerodynamic) and internal (mainly stomatal) resistance for the canopy as a whole. In south-east England, the energy for potential transpiration is almost equal to net heat H in summer and is therefore about half the energy of incoming solar radiation. For a real crop of grass subject to moisture stress, transpiration was less than the potential rate at about 0·8 H on average and 0·3 H in very dry weather.

During the summer, cumulative photosynthesis increases linearly with cumulative transpiration to give a production ratio (gross photosynthesis/transpiration) of 1/100 in the Thames Valley and 1/200 in the Sacramento Valley. The production ratio is expected to change with crop type as well as with climate.

The Mashona cattle of Rhodesia are a strain of the Sanga type, which is found in specific areas of Central and Southern Africa. They are descended from protogenic Bos taurus, Bos indicus and Bos brachyceros cattle which were cross-bred in ancient times. in spite of the pandemics which ravaged herds at the turn of the last century, it seems that Mashona cattle have changed little since first brought to the country. An account is given of the Central African environment and the way it affects the physiological processes of cattle. Because Mashona cattle have lived in the Rhodesian environment for many centurites they are well adapted to it. A description is given of Mashona cattle which are being developed as a distinct breed in Rhodesia.

At doses of 75 mg./kg. given per os, Neguvon was ineffective against Sarcoples scabiei var. Auchenidae. Benzene hexachloride (BHC) per os was ineffective at doses of 20 mg./kg. and killed alpacas when the dose was increased. Spraying the lesions with BHC killed the acari and lesions quickly disappeared. Psoroptes communis, the cause of otitis in alpacas, was equally susceptible to spraying. Lesions and their location are described and attention is drawn to the possible role of acari in nostrils and perinea in the epidemiology of the disease. Dipping is, at present, the only method of cure worth using, but the search for systemic acaricides should be continued.

Results are reported from experiments with nitrogen and potash fertilizers in irrigated Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana), into which annual winter legumes, e.g. berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum) and vetch (Vicia sativa) were overseeded. The experiments were carried out over a three year period on a sandy loam soil at Bet Dagan Experimental Farm, Israel. Ammonium sulphate, applied in equal split rates of up to 384 lb N per acre, linearly increased dry matter yields of Rhodes grass, and the increase of yield proportionally increased the uptake of K by harvest. The K content of the dry matter decreased with increasing nitrogen fertilization to 0·47 per cent which, however, was still found sufficient for maintaining maximum production of Rhodes grass. The yield of annual winter legumes decreased proportionally to the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied during the summer. Acute potassium starvation was observed. An autumn application of potassium chloride restored dry matter production to normal levels. Availability of soil K, expressed in terms of energies of replacement [ΔF(− 1)], decreased proportionally to the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied. When ΔF reached approximately 4,250 cal/mol, overseeded legumes were K-deficient, whereas Rhodes grass at that value was still able to extinct sufficient K from the soil for normal growth.

An attempt is made to investigate some techniques of experimentation, based on data from uniformity trials and experiments on tea conducted in different regions of north-east India. The study showed that:

1. i. Adjustment of yield due to covariance generally ceased to be efficient after the first four years of experimentation in manurial trials and after two years in pruning trials. Adjustment based on average yield over a period of four to six years resulted in an increase in efficiency.

2. ii. Among the ancillary variables of pretreatment yield and pruning weight, the former proved to be generally more efficient, but when cost of operation is taken into account the latter was economical and, therefore, preferable. The two variables together, in a multiple regression, did not show any extra gain. Use of the pretreatment late crop, from September to December, was generally more efficient than using the whole season's crop.

3. iii. Coefficient of variation showed a declining tendency with age, the fall being more marked up to six years of age. This suggests that, for a given degree of precision, more replication would be required for experiments with young tea than with mature tea.

4. iv. Increase in plot size, up to 48 bushes, resulted in an increase in information per replicate in Darjeeling, though plots of smaller size would be more economical.

5. v. On the basis of five uniformity trials in the Assam valley, Darjeeling and Cachar district, it was observed that for the same values of cost components proportional to number of replications and total area under experiment, the optimum plot size in Darjeeling and Cachar was about half that for the Assam valley.

6. vi. Long and narrow plots, oriented with their longer sides extending along the contour lines, within blocks of which the longer sides ran down the slope, proved more efficient than other alternatives in Darjeeling district.

7. vii. Systematic plucking of 1 in 2 out of the totality of plucking rounds, for experiments running for two or more years, provided estimates of treatment contrasts within 5 per cent of the population mean (P = 0-05). For a higher margin of error, of 10 per cent of the mean, systematic pluckings of 1 in 3 or even 1 in 4 would suffice if the treatment comparisons were based on five or more years.

The fixation of nitrogen in root nodules of Mucuna untilis was studied, and its transfer to other parts of the plant. Fixation reached a maximum of 6 mg. per day per plant, and the rate of transfer of nitrogen from the nodules increased gradually until it almost equalled the rate of fixation. Older plants seem to be more efficient fixers of nitrogen than younger ones.

The results are recorded of three field experiments, designed to investigate the effects of plant population and nitrogen fertilizer on growth and yield of maize. High yields of grain can be obtained in Trinidad provided plant populations are at least 20 000 plants per acre, nitrogenous fertilizer is added at the rate of 5–6 cwt per acre, weed and insect pests are controlled, and water is not a limiting factor at any stage of crop growth. Growth analysis has shown the importance of high leaf area indices in the production of high grain yields.

Internal and external factors affecting the germination of seeds of six common East African weeds were studied by sowing the seeds in each of 13 different treatments chosen to provide a wide range of different germination environments. The results indicate how germination is regulated in each of these species and provide the basic information necessary for further field studies.

A four-year study from 1958 to 1962 showed that time of application of fertilizer nitrogen greatly influenced the yield of grain, the percentage of nitrogen and the crude protein of the grain under Nigerian conditions characteristic of the early maize cropping season from March to July. Split applications of nitrogen fertilizer significantly increased maize grain yield by 35 per cent when two equal doses were given one month and two months after planting; and by 31 per cent when four equal doses were supplied at planting and one month, two months and three months after seeding. Yield was significantly reduced when application was delayed two months after planting. High yields of maize were not obtained by supplying the whole of nitrogen fertilizer at one time, eidier at sowing or any time later during the growing season. However, applying all of the nitrogen fertilizer one month after planting significantly increased the percentage of nitrogen and of the crude protein content of the grain. The maize ear weight was favourably influenced by spreading the nitrogen application over the three-month period of the maize growth.

The incidence of rotting among three varieties of yams (Dioscorea rotunda, D. alata and D. cayenensis), stored in a yam barn at Ibadan for about four months, was between 0·6 and 68·5 per cent. The micro-organisms which caused rotting on experimental re-inoculation into yam tubers were the fungi, Botryodiplodia theobromae, Penicillium sp., Marcophomina phaseoli, Hendersonula toruloidea and a motile gram-negative orange-red pigmented bacterim, probably Serratia sp. This is the first record of the ability of M. phaseoli, and H. toruloidea to cause rotting in yam.

A simple method of studying the reaction of detached cacao pods to Phytophthora palmivora is described. The results, which bear a close relation to field observations, are discussed in this context.

Digestibility of the herbage of the indigenous tree Antiaris africana was investigated. Digestion coefficients (%) were—organic matter 67, dry matter 64, crude protein 78, crude fibre 39, nitrogen-free extract 74, ether extract 36 and ash 36. Calculated nutritive values were—starch equivalent 23·2 and digestible crude protein 3·7, giving a nutritive ratio of about 1 : 6. The herbage was young and its palatability high.

Forty-one factorial experiments on rates and forms of the three major elements and rates of some minor and trace elements were carried out over the period 1954–1962 in Iringa, as part of a project to introduce Virginian-type tobacco varieties into the area. There were major responses to nitrogen and phosphate, and a close relationship between their effects, but no responses to other elements. Nitrogen raised yield, particularly in wet seasons, but generally tended to reduce quality, severely above 44 lb N per acre and at lower levels in dry years. Phosphate raised yield and quality, and in some instances crop failures occurred in its absence. Data suggested the optimal N : P2O5 ratio in fertilizer mixtures to be 1 : 15. Despite lack of response to potassium a small amount was recommended, to cover requirements for leaf characteristics which were not measured. The programme amply succeeded in its aim of establishing ‘average’ fertilizer recommendations, which were fundamentally sound, for the whole of the Iringa tobacco growing area. These recommendations are summarized.

The nature of the soil, the influence of previous natural grassland, ley, fallow or cultivation, and the weather conditions before and after planting are shown to affect the yield of wheat, and its response to fertilizers, especially nitrogen. Out of seventeen experiments over four seasons, involving nitrogen top-dressings on wheat, thirteen gave economic increases after the application of I cwt per acre of ammonium sulphate nitrate (A.S.N.). Such applications to the first, second or third wheat crops after Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) ley, or to land continuously cropped for a number of years, nearly always gave an economic increase in grain yield, but on continuously cultivated land, with normal rainfall after planting, an economic return to a second cwt per acre was probable. Following a one-season fallow, economic responses to nitrogen only occurred when the pre-planting period was very wet. Yields of wheat after ley, both with and without applied nitrogen, tended to be superior to those on continuously-cropped land. Responses to phosphorus only occurred in one area, where the importance of applying both N and P, particularly to newly-ploughed grassland, was very evident. Loss of organic matter, and structural deterioration accompanied by lower efficiency in the utilization of water and nitrogen, are probably the main causes of falling yields on soils cultivated for many years. The use of grass/legume leys is suggested as the best means of maintaining these naturally fertile soils in a highly productive state, even though the present returns from the legs themselves may be less profitable than wheat cropping.

Certain statistical techniques, useful in collecting and interpreting ordinal data, are described and their applicability in plant breeding explained. It is suggested that these statistical techniques may be particularly valuable to plant breeders in determining taste Preferences. A series of experiments are described, investigating the taste Preferences of the Itero of Uganda, who show a strong preference for a mixture of cassava, sorghum and Eleusine millet for food. They do not apparently prefer white sorghum grains for food, nor coloured grains for beer, although such Preferences have been recorded elsewhere. They dislike maize and Pennisetum millet. It is suggested that an experimental approach to quality in the breeding of tropical food crops is both desirable and possible, using rank correlation techniques.

A series of N × P field experiments with irrigated rice, conducted over the period 1958–1962 on the same plots on alluvial soils considered representative for most of the bottom ‘fadama’ land in Niger and Ilorin Provinces, Northern Nigeria, showed small increases with medium dressings of P2O5 and large responses with high dressings of N. The N responses showed considerable variation between soil types and years. The variation between soil types was attributed to different cation exchange capacities, which resulted in NH4′ leaching from the root zone at different rates. The variation in N responses between years was probably due to different physiological timings of the top dressings. Results of chemical analyses of straw and grain samples of the 1961 crop were used to estimate the percentage of N and P2O5 recovered by the crop with the various treatments over the untreated plots in the previous years of the experiments on two soil types. The recovery percentages for the different levels of N on the clay ‘basin’ soils were moderate, about 18 per cent, whereas those for the sandy ‘levee’ soils were lower, averaging only 9 per cent. Recovery of P2O5 varied from good at medium N levels (14 per cent) to moderate at high N levels (9 per cent) on the basin soils. Recovery of P2O5 on the levee soils was poor. The utilisation of the recovered N (75 lb paddy/lb N) and P2O5 (42 lb paddy/lb P2O5) was very good for N and fair for P2O5.

Digestion coefficients (%) were—organic matter 70, dry matter 70, crude protein 78, crude fibre 54, nitrogenfree extract 81, ether extract 13 and ash 52. Calculated nutritive values were—starch equivalent 27.3 and digestible crude protein 5.0, giving a nutritive ratio of about 1 : 5. The material used was moderately young.
