Personality Disorders (PDs) are psychiatric conditions involving maladaptive personality traits and behaviours. Previous research has shown that musical preferences and the use of music may be related to personality traits. Additionally, music therapy (MT) is increasingly being used as a treatment option for people with PDs.

This systematic review aimed to summarise the findings of the existing literature on music, MT, and PDs, and to identify any gaps in the existing literature.

Using the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search was undertaken using three databases: PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycInfo.

A total of 24 studies were included in this review and summarised into four categories: music preference, MT, music performance, and music imagery, all in relation to PDs or traits associated with PDs. The analysis found that individuals with personality traits associated with PDs may prefer different types or genres of music or interact with music differently than those without these traits. Additionally, MT was found to offer a potentially useful treatment option for PDs.

The power of these findings was limited by the small number of included studies. This review offers a useful foundation upon which further research looking at MT as a potential treatment option for PDs can be built. As selected music has been reported to help to reduce violence and hostility, patients may develop playlists with the support of their therapists to manage aggression and violent impulses in foreseeably difficult situations; appropriate music for bedtime relaxation can be recommended to improve sleep length and quality; and people who experience insecurities may be encouraged to try music to aid cognitive problem solving and improve their mood.

Gender dysphoria (GD) is characterized by a marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and gender assigned at birth, associated with clinically significant distress or impairment in important areas of functioning. Persons with GD are a population with specific healthcare needs. In our hospital, psychiatric assessment of these individuals started in 2008.

Characterization of a population of transgender individuals and their perceived negative mental health and life experiences.

Since the beginning of evaluations of transgender individuals in our hospital, from 2008 to 2022, they were asked to freely elaborate their “life story”: a report of the most relevant events in their lives, related to their condition. We retrospectively analyzed the content of the reports that were sent and associated with the clinical files.

We collected the data of 104 individuals. The gender attributed at birth consisted of 74 (71.2%) females and 30 (28.8%) males. As for the gender identity, the sample consisted of 73 (70.2%) males, 28 (26.9%) females, 2 (1.9%) nonbinary and 1 (1%) person didn’t identify with any of the existent denominations. The medium age in October of 2022 was 27.4 (minimum 18, maximum 60, SD 7.3). The age at first evaluation at consult was 23.6 (minimum 15, maximum 56, SD 7.2). 99 (95.2%) individuals mentioned symptoms of gender non-conformity beginning in childhood, and of those who mentioned their adolescence (n=43, 41.3%), all expressed feelings of anguish relating to their changing bodies. The medium age of recognition of their condition was 17.2 (minimum 11, maximum 30, SD 4.3). Of those who recall their first contact with health practitioners regarding their symptoms (n=31, 29.8%), 32.3% admitted they didn’t feel they were helped. Of those who mentioned early relationships with family and carers (n=65, 62,5%), 35.4% reveal dysfunctional relationships and 79% mention gender expectations from their families. Similarly, 42 (40.4%) individuals reveal experiences of victimization and bullying because of their gender nonconformity. 53 (60.2%) described symptoms of a likely comorbid psychiatric illness throughout their life, particularly depressive symptoms, anxious symptoms, suicide attempts and non-suicidal self-injury.

GD has gained more attention in the recent years, and the scientific community has now developed a more accurate set of criteria for the recognition of this condition. The findings in our study are in accordance with these criteria. Unfortunately, much of the suffering this condition entails is also associated with distress related to stigma and societal gender expectations, and that was evident in this investigation.

Stress is an integral part of the profession of health care personnel (HCP) and manifests in higher rates of depressive and anxiety disorders (ADD).

Screening of anxiety and depressive disorders factors among HCPs

A descriptive cross-sectional study in two university hospitals in Ariana was carried out ont september 2022. It included HCP who were examined for medical periodic visit. Data was collect from medical records, anxiety and depression Scale (HAD) and somnolence questionnaire (Epworth).

One hundred and nine HCP were included in the study. Women represented 87.2% of cases. The average age was 38 ±10.7 years. The average occupational seniority varied between one to 38 years. Nurses represented 38.5%, technicians 24% and doctors 7%. They had night work in 12% of cases. Depression and anxiety were found for 20% and 31% of cases respectively. Successive daytime sleepiness was found in 7% of cases. A statistically significant relationship was found between excessive daytime sleepiness and anxiety (p=0.005) and between depression (p=0.002).

Anxiety and depressive disorders in HCP were considerable. they were assiciated with sleepiness disorder. Night or day time shift wasn’t statistically correlated with ADD. Referral to psychiatric consultations after psychological opinion was done in order garantee therapeutic support and decide fitness to work.

Intensive home treatment (IHT) for people experiencing a mental health crisis has been progressively established in many western countries as an alternative to in-ward admission. But is this a real alternative? We previously reported that patients treated in our IHT unit only differ from those voluntarily admitted to hospital in suicidal risk and severe behaviour disorders (not in other factors such as clinical severity) (Martín-Blanco et al., Rev Psiquiatr Salud Ment 2022;15:213-5). Now we are interested in disentangle if those patients who used to require inward management can be successfully treated at home.

To describe subsequent treatment trajectories of the first 1000 admissions to our IHT unit and to compare clinical characteristics among the different groups of trajectories.

Retrospective cohort study. Subsequent treatment trajectories were collected from December 2016 to October 2022 and classified: absence, hospital, IHT, and mixed (hospital and IHT). Statistical significance was tested by means of ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test for quantitative variables (corrected for multiple comparisons) and chi-square tests for qualitative variables.

Tables 1 shows the characteristics of the whole sample. Of the 1000 IHT admissions, 12.1% needed subsequent hospital admission(s), 12.7% IHT admission(s), and 9.3% mixed admission(s). There were no differences among these groups in median severity at IHT admission, but there were differences in the number of previous admissions (p=0.0001): the group with no subsequent admissions had less previous admissions than the other groups (pBonf<0.0001), and the group with subsequent IHT admissions had less than the group with mixed admissions (pBonf=0.0123). There were differences between groups regarding distribution of diagnoses (p<0.0001) (Fig. 1). Epidemiological studies indicate an alarming narrowing in the gender gap of alcohol and tobacco use especially in adolescents, which may reflect changes in sociocultural patterns in women. Moreover, women use more often alcohol to cope with stress and negative feelings. Suicidal thinking is relevant in patients with First Episode Psychosis (FEP). However, longitudinal studies specifically examining treatment response for suicidal ideation in FEP are still relatively scarce, especially with long-term design and in real-world clinical settings.

The aims of this research were (A) to longitudinally assess suicidal thoughts in people with FEP along a 2-year follow-up period and (B) to overtime investigate any significant association of suicidal ideation levels with the specific treatment components of an ‘Early Intervention in Psychosis’ (EIP) protocol along the 2 years of follow-up.

At entry, 232 FEP participants (aged 12–35 years) completed the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), including a ‘Suicidality’ item subscore. Multiple linear regression analysis was then performed.

Across the follow-up, FEP subjects showed a relevant decrease in suicidal thinking levels overtime. This was specifically predicted by the total number of individual psychotherapy sessions offered within the 2-year EIP protocol and antidepressant dose (at least as regards the first year of our intervention).

Suicidal ideation is clinically relevant in FEP but seems to improve overtime together with the provision of specific, patient-tailored and integrated EIP treatments, especially individual psychotherapy.

Occupational exposure to organic solvents can have multiple health effects for exposed employees.Neuropsychic effects represent an important part of these effects and have a significant impact on patients’ ability to work

• - To describe the socio-professional and medical characteristics of workers exposed to organic solvents

• - To screen among the study population for neuropsychological effects related to an organic psychosyndrome using the Q16 questionnaire.

A retrospective descriptive study of workers exposed to organic solvents, who were referred to the occupational medicine department of Charles Nicolle Hospital in Tunis for a medical assessment of their fitness for work over the period from 2016 to 2022. The socio-professional data were collected from the medical records. The Swedish Q16 questionnaire in its French version was used to screen for neuropsychological signs of organic psycho-syndrome.

A total of 37 workers were included. The mean age was 45.38 ± 8.63 years with a clear male predominance (77%). The mean occupational seniority was 21.39 ± 11.11 years. The average duration of the occupational exposure to organic solvents was 18.25 ± 11.29 years. The most represented sectors of activity were the plastics industry (11%), the automotive industry (19%), the carpentry sector (14%) and the aeronautics sector (9%). Our population was represented by polyvalent workers in 49% of cases and by painter in 24% of cases. Psychiatric history was noted in only one case. The main functional signs reported by the workers were wheezing dyspnea with breathing difficulties (13%) and headaches (11%).

The Q16 questionnaire was found to be positive in 65% of the cases, with a higher rate of positivity for the items relating to unusual fatigue (73%), irritability for no particular reason (67%), short memory (64%) and headaches (58%). Acquired dyschromatopsia detected by a Lanthony test was found in 39% of the cases, 23% of which was associated with a positive Q16 questionnaire. Additional exploration by specific psychotechnical tests was carried out in five cases, all of which came back positive with significant attentional and cognitive impairment.

A declaration of an occupational disease according to the Table n°23 (Halogenated derivatives of aliphatic hydrocarbons) and Table n°40 (other liquid organic solvents for professional use) of the Tunisian list of occupational diseases eligible for compensation was made in three and two cases respectively. A definitive exemption from exposure to organic solvents was indicated for all workers with a positive Q16 questionnaire.

Exposure to organic solvents is a risk encountered in various occupational sectors. Thus, education of the employees to the dangers encountered with a reinforcement of the collective and individual technical protection means are essential in order to avoid their detrimental effects on health.

Work addiction is currently an increasingly frequent phenomenon in several sectors of activity, particullarly the engineering sector, given the importance of technological advances and the development of organizational climates favoring competition.

To describe work addiction impact among tunisian computer engineers.

A descriptive cross sectional study was carried out from September first, 2020 to December 31st, 2020 including computer engineers working in several private engineering companies located at Grand Tunis area. Data collection was done through an online self-administered questionnaire. The level of work addiction was assessed by the Work Addiction Risk Test (WRAT) in its French version validated with 25 items evaluating five dimensions namely : Compulsive tendencies, control, lack of communication, inability to delegate and self-esteem. Burnout was identified by The Maslach Burnout Inventory.

A total of 92 computer engineers were included. The average age was 27 ± 4.7 years with extremes ranging from 23 to 55 years. The sex ratio (M / F) was equal to 1.48. Sixty-nine percent (69%) of engineers considered that their work takes so much energy and time that it had a negative impact on their private lives (less time spent with family, more marital conflicts, etc…). Fifty-four percent (54%) of engineers suffered from sleep disorders (difficulty falling asleep, repetitive nocturnal awakenings, etc). The results of the WART questionnaire showed that 58% of engineers were at risk of work addiction, of which 27% had a high risk. This group of engineers with a medium to high risk of work addiction had an average age of 26 ± 3.6 years with extremes ranging from 23 to 42 years. The sex ratio was equal to 1.52. They reported more negative impact of their work on their personal lives (p=0.010) and more reproaches from family members (p= 0.038). They were at risk of burnout syndrome (p=0.038). No statistically significant relationship between the risk of work addiction and the occupational characteristics (occupational category, seniority in the engineering position, number of hours spent at work / week, etc.) was found.

The occupational physician has a crucial role in screening work addiction and its consequences among engineers. Early detection among at-risk populations must be carried out by a multidisciplinary team for appropriate management of workaholic employees.

The psychological burden of the COVID-19 pandemic can have a lasting impact on the emotional well-being of healthcare workers (HCWs). Healthcare professionals working during the pandemic experienced increased occupational stress due to the high risk of contracting the virus, work overload, significantly increased working hours and overlapping job responsibilities

The study aimed to assess the dynamics of mental health and coping and to analyze how HCWs’ emotional responses to a pandemic at the beginning of the pandemic and at the two-year follow-up. This study compared the results of examination of emotional response of HCWs in 2020 and 2022. The relationships between stress and alexithymia, emotional processing, and negative / positive affect in healthcare professionals were analyzed.

All respondents of the study were hospital or ambulatory healthcare professionals. Overall, 285 subjects were examined in 2020 while 252 subjects were examined in 2022. Respondents completed several questionnaires such as e.g., the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), the Emotional Processing Scale (EPS), and the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS).

Significant increased scores were observed forthe following parameters: alexithymia, identifying feelings, verbalizing feelings, operative thinking style, emotional processing, suppression, signs of unprocessed emotion, controllability of emotions, avoidance of emotional triggers, impoverished emotional experience, surrogate activities, denial, substance use, self-blame, stress, negative mood, somatic disorders, concern, dysfunction, depression, anxiety state and trait.

The results were significantly lower for planning, using instrumental support, positive reframing, acceptance, religion, using emotional support, venting and positive mood.

Statistically significant differences could not be found for acceptance, active coping, humor and behavioral disengagement

Research indicates that exposure to the pandemic a pandemic is associated with greater severity of a range of symptoms in HCWs. Two years of the pandemic may have led to psychological impairment. Nowadays, tobacco consumption among the student population has become a very worrying phenomenon. Given the high rate of its morbidity and mortality, knowledge of the inventory of consumption and especially tobacco addiction seems necessary.

To determine the prevalence of tobacco use and the main factors associated with it in a sample of Tunisian students.

This is a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study carried out during the 2020/2021 academic year with a sample of Tunisian students.We used an anonymous self-administered questionnaire distributed online via social networks. Our questionnaire included a section focusing on socio-demographic characteristics and the Fagerström test to detect tobacco addiction.

Our study enrolled 772 students .The average age of the study population was 23.29 3.25. The prevalence of tobacco consumption was 32.1%. Among the study population, 168 respondents (67.9%) were regular smokers.By evaluating our population with the Fagerström scale, 16.9% presented a strong dependence with a score >six.One hundred and six smokers (63.1%) began their smoking out of curiosity. The search for relaxation and the response to a need were the effects sought mainly (55.8% and 56.6%).The festive context and stress were the main elements increasing tobacco consumption (71% and 69.5%). The factors associated with smoking were age (p<0.005), male gender (p<10-3) and being single (p=0.035).

Tobacco consumption represents a public health problem, particularly among young people. Measures for the prevention and management of tobacco addiction should be put in place in the university environment.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and nonmotor symptoms, the latter contributing significantly to morbidity, mortality, nursing home placement and quality of life.

We present a literature review about the impact of psychosis on PD’s prognosis.

A literature review is performed on PUBMED, using the next keywords: "Parkinson’s disease”, “psychosis” and “prognosis”. We focused on data from systematic reviews, clinical trials and meta-analysis published in English on last 10 years.

Psychosis is a common feature of Parkinson’s disease, occurring in up to 30% of PD patients treated chronically with antiparkinsonian drugs. Visual hallucinations are the most common psychotic symptom observed, delusions being considerably less common and affecting only 5% of treated patients.

Positive symptoms in PD vary across its course: early in the disease, passage hallucinations, illusions and presence hallucinations occur; later, complete visual hallucinations, initially with good insight, then without insight.

Psychosis spectrum symptoms in early PD predict a decline in cognitive function at 2 years, especially visual hallucinations. There is an association between visual hallucinations and the subsequent emergence of dementia.

Current evidence highlights the role of PD psychosis as a clinical biomarker of disease stage, distribution and future progression. Early recognition and treatment of psychotic symptoms improves disease’s outcomes.

Antidepressants (AD) are one of the most prescribed pharmacological treatments in developed countries. AD efficacy is well-proven in anxiety, depressive and other mental disorders, but their use is also common in individuals without psychiatric health conditions. Indeed, recent evidence reported an increase in AD prescription over the latest years. Concern has been raised on the overuse of AD in several countries, and societal policies and national guidelines have been developed to regulate their use in the general population.

Several factor might be used to explain this increase, including the more safety profile of new AD classes (i.e. SSRI, or vortioxetine) compared to old AD, a possible overall increase in the incidence of depressive and anxiety disorders, or their inappropriate prescription in mild conditions which could be managed without pharmacological treatment as first-step option in primary care (PC).

Explore AD prescription patterns in relation to mental health diagnoses and identify the most relevant factors involved in PC health systems. Understanding the variables influencing AD prescription would allow designing strategies and guidelines to make appropriate use of this pharmacological group in PC. As part of the PRESTO project (www.prestoclinic.cat), here we investigated the changes in frequency and the variables associated with AD prescription in a population-representative sample of people attending PC between 2010 –2019 in Catalonia, Spain.

We retrieved AD prescription, sociodemographic, and health-related data using individual electronic health records from a population-representative sample (N=947.698) attending PC between 2010-2019. Prescription of AD was calculated using DHD (Defined Daily Doses per 1,000 inhabitants/day). We compared cumulative changes in DHD with cumulative changes in diagnoses with an indication for AD during the study period. We used Poisson regression to examine sociodemographic and health-related variables associated with AD prescription.

Both AD prescription and mental health diagnoses with an indication for AD gradually increased. At the end of the study period, DHD of AD prescriptions and mental health diagnoses with an indication for AD reached cumulative increases of 404% and 49% respectively. Female sex (incidence rate ratio (IRR)= 2.83), older age (IRR = 25.43), and lower socio-economic status (IRR= 1.35) were significantly associated with increased risk of being prescribed an AD.

Our results from a large and representative cohort of patients confirm a steady increase of AD prescriptions that is not explained by a parallel increase in mental health diagnoses with an indication for AD. A trend on AD off-label and over-prescriptions in the PC system in Catalonia can be inferred from this dissociation.

Plasma zonulin is acknowledged to be a biomarker for intestinal permeability. Previous studies have demonstrated significant relationships regarding potential effects of zonulin in several major psychiatric conditions including attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder and depression, however its role in schizophrenia still remains unclear.

We aimed to identify the alterations of plasma zonulin levels between the different periods of the illness and we strive to reveal the associations between plasma zonulin levels and symptoms in patients with chronic schizophrenia.

30 patients with schizophrenia and 29 healthy controls participated in the study. Sociodemographic data form and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were administered. Blood sampling was performed for patients who are in exacerbation and following treatment response periods along with the healthy controls. ELISA method was utilized to measure plasma zonulin levels.

The groups did not differ in plasma zonulin level comparisons. Plasma zonulin did not fluctuate between the symptom exacerbation and treatment response periods of the patients. Besides, plasma zonulin level was found to be associated with passive/apathetic social withdrawal, active social avoidance, and somatic concern items of the PANSS in a negative direction.

This is the first follow-up study in the literature that assesses plasma zonulin in patients with schizophrenia. The measurement of plasma zonulin may not be a convenient parameter in distinguishing symptom exacerbation and treatment response periods in chronic schizophrenia, nevertheless it may have implications on reduced social interaction and somatic symptoms. Our study can provide better insight for future studies to be more cautious while interpreting the associations of plasma zonulin levels with psychiatric disorders.

The reduction of vitamin D (VitD) has often been associated with pathological cognitive processes and in general with various mental illnesses2,3. More frequent reports of reduced concentrations of VitD concern patients with schizophrenia, however it has not been clarified whether this concerns the pathology itself of the disorder or if nutritional factors are involved1.

The measurement of VitD in the serum of hospitalized patients with mental illness (schizophrenia) compared to the levels of people without mental illness.

The serum levels of VitD were measured in the serum of 45 psychiatric patients of psychiatric hospital “Dromokaiteion” (22 men and 23 women) mean age 59 ±14 years. The control group consisted of 49 healthy subjects (24 men and 25 women) with a mean age of 57 ±14 years (Table 1). Serum VitD levels were measured on the Architect ci4100 immunobiochemical analyzer, Abbott Laboratories Ltd, by the chemiluminescent microparticle immune assay (CMIA) method and according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The statistical analysis of the data was done with the software program SPSS V.25.

Mean values of Vit D (ng/ml) were 15.8±10.7 and 15.3±12.5 in male and female patients, respectively. For the control group the mean values were 22.4±7.9 in men and 26.4±13.9 in women. Vit D values in the psychiatric patients of both groups compared to the control group were statistically significantly different (men p=0.021 and women p=0.006). (Table2, 3).

The findings of the study are consistent with those of similar studies confirming low concentrations of VitD in the serum of patients with mental illness. This parameter should be taken into account as its measurement is not included in the routine laboratory control to date. Further future studies should correlate VitD deficiency with specific demographic and clinical characteristics.

Modern warfare in a civilian setting may expose combatants to severe moral challenges. Whereas most of these challenges are handled effectively, some potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) may have deleterious psychological effects on the combatants, such as suicide ideation (SI). Self-disclosure, which includes sharing distressing thoughts and emotions, has been recognized as a protective factor against SI in the aftermath of stressful events.

The current study is the first to examine the moderating role of self-disclosure in the relationship between PMIEs exposure and SI among combat veterans.

A sample of 190 recently discharged Israeli combat veterans completed validated self-report questionnaires in a cross-sectional design study, tapping combat exposure, PMIEs, depressive symptoms, SI, and self-disclosure.

PMIE dimensions, and self-disclosure significantly contributed to current SI. Importantly, the moderating model indicated that self-disclosure moderated the link between PMIE-Self and current SI , as PMIE-Self and current SI were more strongly associated among veterans with low levels of self-disclosure than among high self-disclosing veterans.

Self-disclosure, as a factor promoting a sense of belongingness, interpersonal bonding, and support, might reduce SI risk following PMIE exposure. Various mechanisms accounting for these associations are suggested, and clinical implications of these interactions are discussed.

CBT for childhood anxiety is used as the gold treatment of choice for anxiety disorders in children. Video-assisted CBT can serve as a cost and time effective intervention method in a low-resource setting.

To develop, validate video-assisted CBT for children and adolescents with Anxiety disorder with secondary objective to explore feasibility of brief video assisted CBT as an additional component to treatment as usual in improving symptom severity.

Study was divided into 2 phases. In the 1st phase videos (1 common introductory video and 2 videos each for children and adolescents,in Tamil and English) based on a validated CBT workbook was made. A second phase involving exploration of feasibility of video-based interventions along with treatment-as-usual was carried out in OPD of tertiary care hospital. Of 13 children recruited with anxiety disorder,2 were lost to follow-up. In 2nd phase, intervention delivered on OPD computer and provided to family members to watch at home through phone. Assessment of symptoms were done using SCARED, CGAS, CGI-S, VAS (parent) at baseline & 8 weeks. Written narratives were taken from participant at baseline & 8 weeks. Parent semi structured proforma was used to assess perceived benefit by parent.

In first phase validation was obtained from 3 experts. All experts agreed or strongly agreed for videos to be appropriate for use in children and adolescents with anxiety disorder. Most frequent diagnosis was social anxiety disorder.Family history of psychiatric illness was there in 61.54% of participants. Post intervention at 8 weeks when compared to baseline found statistically significant reduction in symptom severity on SCARED, CGAS and VAS (parent) scores. In parent semi structured proforma good improvement in understanding, perceived reduction of symptom severity reported.For qualitative data, manual content analysis done with clustering of themes and sub-themes.

In theme of Treatment impact on self, codes of decreased self-esteem and overthinking generated the maximum response. In theme of impact of illness in various contexts, codes of peer relationship and academic performance generated the maximum responses. At the end of 8 weeks participants reported Relaxation techniques as most used, followed by coping skills and challenging negative thoughts with help of tension diary respectively.

In aspects of videos liked by parents, brevity and simplicity generated most responses. In aspects requiring improvement most of parents reported no improvement needed in videos.

This pilot study on video based CBT can serve as a time and cost-effective treatment strategy for anxiety disorders in children and adolescents especially in low resource settings. Similar studies involving development of similar videos can be made for various mental illnesses in various vernacular languages and tested in a larger population.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic, neurodegenerative disorder leading to dopamine deficiency. Phenotypically, there is a wide spectrum of motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS). Among NMS, sexual dysfunction (SD) is one of the most disabling and crippling symptom. However, SD are usually neglected and underdiagnosed in PD patients.

Our study aimed to estimate the effect of motor disability and the disease course on sexual dysfunction in PD patients.

This retrospective study included 42 patients (18 males and 24 females) from the department of neurology of the National Institute of Neurology Mongi Ben Hmida in Tunis, Tunisia, diagnosed with PD between 1999 and 2022. The diagnosis of PD was confirmed according to the Movement Disorder Society (MDS) diagnostic criteria of PD. The MDS Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) motor was used to estimate motor disability and Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) stage was used to rate disease severity. The SD of PD patients was measured by applying the sexual items of Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson’s Disease - Autonomic Dysfunction (SCOPA-AUT).

SD was observed in only 11 patients (26.2%) with a sex-ratio of M/F = 1.2 and a mean age of 52 (between 40 and 72). The mean age of PD onset was 47. According to the MDS-UPDRS part III, 1 patient had a severe motor disorder (MDS-UPDRS> 59), and according to the H&Y scale, no patient had a severe stage of the disease. Nine patients had motor complications such as motor fluctuations and L-Dopa induced dyskinesia.

The SD described by our patients were: women reported Vaginal Dryness (4 patients), with difficulties reaching an orgasm (3 patients); men reported erectile dysfunction (6 patients), and difficulties in reaching an orgasm (6 patients). Among these patients, 3 were treated for SD with Tadalafil (all males).

In our study, no significant gender-related differences were found in scores related to SD in patients with PD. Neither the disease severity nor the motor disability was significantly associated to sexual disorders (respectively p=0.26 and p=0.12). Also, Motor complications induced by L-Dopa medication, assessed by the part IV of MDS-UPDRS scale, had no significant effect in the occurrence of SD in PD (p=0.78).

Sexual behavior has neuronal and hormonal modulation. Lack of dopamine seems to have an important role in the development of SD. However, it occurs independently of the disease severity and the motor disability. Thus, clinicians should be aware of the importance of assessing and treating such symptoms since the beginning of the disease.

Despite the projected growth of the geriatric population, there is currently no clear treatment framework for these patients. This treatment requires specific training for psychiatrists in the field of geriatric psychiatry.

to evaluate the attitudes of psychiatric residents in Tunisia with regard to gerontopsychiatry.

All psychiatry residents at Razi Hospital in Tunis in April 2022 were asked to complete an anonymous online survey with questions related to previous experience with the elderly, exposure to geriatric psychiatry patients during medical school, future career plans and interest in pursuing a geriatric psychiatry rotation, and factors involved in their decision.

55 of 72 (76%) residents responded, of whom 63 (n=34)% were in their second year of residency. 69% (n=38) of residents reported no exposure to geriatric psychiatry patients during medical school, but of those who had, 70% (n=24) had a positive experience. Only four residents (7%) reported considering a career in geriatric psychiatry. With respect to the geriatric psychiatry curriculum, all residents felt that changes were needed in geriatric psychiatry education and career path.

Residents’ interest in further training in geriatric psychiatry is low. The most common reason is the perception of a poor prognosis for this patient population. Future studies are needed to develop strategies to increase interest in this field.

The development of the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases has rekindled the research interest surrounding diagnostic classification systems (DCSs). According to expert consensus, the main purpose of DCSs is to provide guidance in clinical practice. There are no reviews in the international literature, however, assessing what mental health practitioners believe is the main purpose of DCSs.

The aims of this systematic review were to assess what mental health professionals think is the single most important purpose of DCSs and how they rate DCSs’ utility for various purposes. All DCSs were considered.

Two separate searches were conducted in Medline Via Ovid and PsycInfo: one for articles assessing the main purpose of DCSs according to mental health professionals and one for studies on how practitioners rate the utility of DCSs for various purposes. The first search revealed eight articles on the main purpose of DCSs and the second three articles on how practitioners rate their utility for various purposes. The total number of participants from all included studies for the first search was 9,276 and for the second 2,363. The studies included clinicians from a wide range of world regions, languages, and income-level countries.

The results of the meta-analyses for the first search showed that 44% (95%CI=38-49%) of the responders believe that the main purpose of the DCSs is facilitating inter-clinician communication, 20% (4-35%) to inform treatment decisions, 14% (11-16%) to aid the communication between clinicians and patients, 11% (4-18%) to reflect on aetiology/pathogenesis, 9% (2-16%) to facilitate research, 4% (2-7%) to provide a national statistical base and 1% (0.1-2%) to indicate prognosis. Regarding how responders rate the utility of DCSs for various purposes, the highest ratings were given for meeting administrative requirements and inter-clinician communication in the two of the three included studies, and clinical diagnosis and training in the third.

“Inter-clinician communication” was the most voted purpose of DCSs and was rated relatively high in the tier of DCSs’ clinical utility. In contrast, “inform management decisions”, even though it was voted as the second most popular purpose of DCSs, was placed on the bottom of the rating tier of DCSs’ clinical utility. Interestingly, none of the included studies asked the responders whether “making a diagnosis” is the main purpose of DCSs. Further research is needed to assess what mental health professionals expect from DCSs, so as to improve their clinical utility in the future.
