In this paper, we consider diffusion, reaction and dissolution of mobile and immobile chemical species present in a porous medium. Inflow–outflow boundary conditions are considered at the outer boundary and the reactions amongst the species are assumed to be reversible which yield highly nonlinear reaction rate terms. The dissolution of immobile species takes place on the surfaces of the solid parts. Modelling of these processes leads to a system of coupled semilinear partial differential equations together with a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with multi-valued right-hand sides. We prove the global existence of a unique positive weak solution of this model using a regularization technique, Schaefer's fixed point theorem and Lyapunov type arguments.

We consider the Halfin–Whitt diffusion process Xd(t), which is used, for example, as an approximation to the m-server M/M/m queue. We use recently obtained integral representations for the transient density p(x,t) of this diffusion process, and obtain various asymptotic results for the density. The asymptotic limit assumes that a drift parameter β in the model is large, and the state variable x and the initial condition x0 (with Xd(0) = x0 > 0) are also large. We obtain some alternate representations for the density, which involve sums and/or contour integrals, and expand these using a combination of the saddle point method, Laplace method and singularity analysis. The results give some insight into how steady state is achieved, and how if x0 > 0 the probability mass migrates from Xd(t) > 0 to the range Xd(t) < 0, which is where it concentrates as t → ∞, in the limit we consider. We also discuss an alternate approach to the asymptotics, based on geometrical optics and singular perturbation techniques.

We consider a nonlinear diffusion equation describing the planar spreading of a viscous fluid injected between an elastic sheet and an underlying rigid plane. The dynamics depends sensitively on the physical conditions at the contact line where the sheet is lifted off the plane by the fluid. We explore two possibilities for these conditions (or “regularisations”): a pre-wetted film and a constant-pressure fluid lag (a gas-filled gap between the fluid edge and the contact line). For both flat and inclined planes, we compare numerical and asymptotic solutions, identifying the distinct stages of evolution and the corresponding characteristic rates of spreading.

Of concern is the stability and bifurcation analysis of a free boundary problem modelling the growth of multi-layer tumours. A remarkable feature of this problem lies in that the free boundary is imposed with nonlinear boundary conditions, where a Gibbs–Thomson relation is taken into account. By employing a functional approach, analytic semigroup theory and bifurcation theory, we prove that there exists a positive threshold value γ* of surface tension coefficient γ such that if γ > γ* then the unique flat stationary solution is asymptotically stable under non-flat perturbations, while for γ < γ* this unique flat stationary solution is unstable and there exists a series of non-flat stationary solutions bifurcating from it. The result indicates a significant phenomenon that a smaller value of surface tension coefficient γ may make tumours more aggressive.

In this paper the free boundary problem for groundwater phreatic surface is represented in the form of a variational principle. It is proved that the flow domain Ω that solves the problem is a minimizer of some functional Λ(Ω). Weak solutions are introduced as minimizers of the lower semi-continuous regularization of Λ(⋅). Within this approach the existence of weak solutions is proved for a wide class of input data.

In this special issue of the European Journal of Applied Mathematics we celebrate the 75th birthday of its founding editor, Professor John Ockendon.

John started his research career with his D.Phil., awarded in 1965, working with Alan Tayler at the University of Oxford. John's background was in fluid mechanics, covering a wide range of topics, including, lubrication flows, flows in porous media, hypersonic aerodynamics, sloshing phenomena, and flow separation. He soon became involved in industrial research which led, in particular, to his interest in the field of free boundary problems, an area in which he became a driving force, through papers, conferences, and particularly through the fostering of regular international meetings and personal interactions. His pioneering work in the field was particularly concentrated in diffusion-controlled moving boundary problems that arise in various applications, such as in phase change problems, elastic-contact problems and the fundamental Hele-Shaw free boundary problem. The industrial collaborations also led to mathematical studies of lens design, fibre extrusion, fluidised beds, glass manufacture and semiconductor devices, to name but a few, and to problems in scattering and wave theory, non-linear wave propagation and non-linear oscillations, as well as mechanics and heat and mass transfer. He continues to work on PDEs and asymptotics applied to new well-founded models from the real world, with a particular focus in the physical and earth sciences.

In this paper, Chebyshev series and rigorous numerics are combined to compute solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations for the one-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau model of superconductivity. The idea is to recast solutions as fixed points of a Newton-like operator defined on a Banach space of rapidly decaying Chebyshev coefficients. Analytic estimates, the radii polynomials and the contraction mapping theorem are combined to show existence of solutions near numerical approximations. Coexistence of as many as seven nontrivial solutions is proved.

We consider a cell growth model involving a nonlinear system of partial differential equations which describes the growth of two types of cell populations with contact inhibition. Numerical experiments show that there is a parameter regime where, for a large class of initial data, the large time behaviour of the solutions is described by a segregated travelling wave solution with positive wave speed c. Here, the word segregated expresses the fact that the different types of cells are spatially segregated, and that the single densities are discontinuous at the moving interface which separates the two populations. In this paper, we show that, for each wave speed c > c, there exists an overlapping travelling wave solution, whose profile is continuous and no longer segregated. We also show that, for a large class of initial functions, the overlapping travelling wave solutions cannot represent the large time profile of the solutions of the system of partial differential equations. The structure of the travelling wave solutions strongly resembles that of the scalar Fisher-KPP equation, for which the special role played by the travelling wave solution with minimal speed has been extensively studied.

We consider Hele-Shaw flows driven by injection of a highly shear-thinning power-law fluid (of exponent n) in the absence of surface tension. We formulate the problem in terms of the streamfunction ψ, which satisfies the p-Laplacian equation ∇·(|∇ψ|p−2∇ψ) = 0 (with p = (n+1)/n) and use the method of matched asymptotic expansions in the large n (extreme-shear-thinning) limit to find an approximate solution. The results show that significant flow occurs only in (I) segments of a (single) circle centred on the injection point, whose perimeters comprise the portion of free boundary closest to the injection point and (II) an exponentially small region around the injection point and (III) a transition region to the rest of the fluid: while the flow in the latter is exponentially slow it can be characterised in detail.

The Polubarinova–Galin equation describes a parametric conformal map for the zero-surface-tension Hele-Shaw flow driven by injection or suction. In this paper, we classify degree three polynomial solutions to the Polubarinova–Galin equation into three categories: global solutions, solutions which can be continued after blow-up and solutions which cannot be continued after blow-up. The coefficient region of the initial functions in each category is obtained.

A new class of history-dependent variational–hemivariational inequalities was recently studied in Migórski et al. (2015Nonlinear Anal. Ser. B: Real World Appl.22, 604–618). There, an existence and uniqueness result was proved and used in the study of a mathematical model which describes the contact between a viscoelastic body and an obstacle. The aim of this paper is to continue the analysis of the inequalities introduced in Migórski et al. (2015Nonlinear Anal. Ser. B: Real World Appl.22, 604–618) and to provide their numerical analysis. We start with a continuous dependence result. Then we introduce numerical schemes to solve the inequalities and derive error estimates. We apply the results to a quasistatic frictional contact problem in which the material is modelled with a viscoelastic constitutive law, the contact is given in the form of normal compliance, and friction is described with a total slip-dependent version of Coulomb's law.

In this paper, we investigate from a theoretical point of view the 2D reaction-diffusion system for electrodeposition coupling morphology and surface chemistry, presented and experimentally validated in Bozzini et al. (2013J. Solid State Electr.17, 467–479). We analyse the mechanisms responsible for spatio-temporal organization. As a first step, spatially uniform dynamics is discussed and the occurrence of a supercritical Hopf bifurcation for the local kinetics is proved. In the spatial case, initiation of morphological patterns induced by diffusion is shown to occur in a suitable region of the parameter space. The intriguing interplay between Hopf and Turing instability is also considered, by investigating the spatio-temporal behaviour of the system in the neighbourhood of the codimension-two Turing--Hopf bifurcation point. An ADI (Alternating Direction Implicit) scheme based on high-order finite differences in space is applied to obtain numerical approximations of Turing patterns at the steady state and for the simulation of the oscillating Turing–Hopf dynamics.

An enhanced understanding of the microstructure of oxide ceramics will help scientists and engineers improve their efficiency and design. A phase-field model for the composition and phase distribution of the oxide ceramic components is studied. The model, which includes an obstacle in the phase portion of the energy potential, results in a minimisation problem that characterises the distribution of the bulk phases. The transition region between them is studied in several mathematically plausible asymptotic limits. The behaviour of the system in these limits provides insights into the applicability of the model and indicates appropriate parameter regimes.

In the limit of an asymptotically large diffusivity ratio of order $\mathcal{O}$(ϵ−2) ≫ 1, steady-state spatially periodic patterns of localized spots, where the spots are centred at lattice points of a Bravais lattice, are well-known to exist for certain two-component reaction–diffusion systems (RD) in $\mathbb{R}$2. For the Schnakenberg RD model, such a localized periodic spot pattern is linearly unstable when the diffusivity ratio exceeds a certain critical threshold. However, since this critical threshold has an infinite-order logarithmic series in powers of the logarithmic gauge ν ≡ −1/log ϵ, a low-order truncation of this series is expected to be in rather poor agreement with the true stability threshold unless ϵ is very small. To overcome this difficulty, a hybrid asymptotic-numerical method is formulated and implemented that has the effect of summing this infinite-order logarithmic expansion for the stability threshold. The numerical implementation of this hybrid method relies critically on obtaining a rapidly converging infinite series representation of the regular part of the Bloch Green's function for the reduced-wave operator. Numerical results from the hybrid method for the stability threshold associated with a periodic spot pattern on a regular hexagonal lattice are compared with the two-term asymptotic results of [10] (Iron et al. J. Nonlinear Science, 2014). As expected, the difference between the two-term and hybrid results is rather large when ϵ is only moderately small. A related hybrid method is devised for accurately approximating the stability threshold associated with a periodic pattern of localized spots for the Gray-Scott RD system in $\mathbb{R}$2.

Asymptotic homogenisation via the method of multiple scales is considered for problems in which the microstructure comprises inclusions of one material embedded in a matrix formed from another. In particular, problems are considered in which the interface conditions include a global balance law in the form of an integral constraint; this may be zero net charge on the inclusion, for example. It is shown that for such problems care must be taken in determining the precise location of the interface; a naive approach leads to an incorrect homogenised model. The method is applied to the problems of perfectly dielectric inclusions in an insulator, and acoustic wave propagation through a bubbly fluid in which the gas density is taken to be negligible.

In this paper, we focus on the process of mass transfer in the rotating disk apparatus formulated as a Stefan problem with consideration given to both the hydrodynamics of the process and the specific chemical reactions occurring in the bulk. The wide range in the reaction rates of the underlying chemistry allows for a natural decoupling of the problem into a simplified set of weakly coupled convective–reaction–diffusion equations for the slowly reacting chemical species and a set of algebraic relations for the species that react rapidly. An analysis of the chemical equilibrium conditions identifies an expansion parameter and a reduced model that remains valid for arbitrarily large times. Numerical solutions of the model are compared to an asymptotic analysis revealing three distinct time scales and chemical diffusion boundary layer that lies completely inside the hydrodynamic layer. Formulated as a Stefan problem, the model generalizes the work of Levich (Levich and Spalding (1962) Physicochemical hydrodynamics, vol. 689, Prentice-Hall Englewood Cliffs, NJ) and will help better understand the natural limitations of the rotating disk reaction vessel when consideration is made for the reacting chemical species.

This paper is concerned with the spatial dynamics of a monostable delayed age-structured population model in a 2D lattice strip. When there exists no positive equilibrium, we prove the global attractivity of the zero equilibrium. Otherwise, we give some sufficient conditions to guarantee the global attractivity of the unique positive equilibrium by establishing a series of comparison arguments. Furthermore, when those conditions do not hold, we show that the system is uniformly persistent. Finally, the spreading speed, including the upward convergence, is established for the model without the monotonicity of the growth function. The linear determinacy of the spreading speed and its coincidence with the minimal wave speed are also proved.

We prove that if Ω is a simply connected quadrature domain (QD) of a distribution with compact support and the point of infinity belongs to the boundary, then the boundary has an asymptotic curve that is a straight line, parabola or infinite ray. In other words, such QDs in the plane are perturbations of null QDs.

The superheating that usually occurs when a solid is melted by volumetric heating can produce irregular solid–liquid interfaces. Such interfaces can be visualised in ice, where they are sometimes known as Tyndall stars. This paper describes some of the experimental observations of Tyndall stars and a mathematical model for the early stages of their evolution. The modelling is complicated by the strong crystalline anisotropy, which results in an anisotropic kinetic undercooling at the interface; it leads to an interesting class of free boundary problems that treat the melt region as infinitesimally thin.

The present paper investigates the mechanism of interface closure in the root region of the solutions for steady deep-cellular growth. This phenomenon is determined by a transcendentally small factor beyond all orders. It is found that the root region comprises three inner-inner regions; the inner system in the root region has a simple turning point, whose presence generates the so-called trapped-waves mechanism, which is responsible for the interface closure at the bottom of root. The quantization condition derived from the trapped-waves mechanism yields the eigenvalue that determines the location of interface closure and its dependence on the interfacial energy and other physical parameters.
