We investigate the existence of Denjoy minimal sets and, more generally, strictly ergodic sets in the dynamics of iterated homeomorphisms. It is shown that for the full two-shift, the collection of such invariant sets with the weak topology contains topological balls of all finite dimensions. One implication is an analogous result that holds for diffeomorphisms with transverse homoclinic points. It is also shown that the union of Denjoy minimal sets is dense in the two-shift and that the set of unique probability measures supported on these sets is weakly dense in the set of all shift-invariant, Borel probability measures.

In this article we consider conjugacies between differentiable expanding maps. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a conjugating map to be absolutely continuous, in terms of the Jacobian around periodic orbits.

For a topological dynamical system Σ = (X, σ) where X is a compact metric space with a single homeomorphism σ, we determine the largest postliminal ideal of the transformation group C*-algebra A(Σ) as the intersection of all kernels of irreducible representations of A(Σ) induced from those recurrent points which are not periodic. The result implies characterizations of topological dynamical systems whose transformation group C*-algebras are anti-liminal and post-liminal, that is, of type 1.

We study a new topological classification of suspension flows on subshifts of finite type, and obtain a new proof of a theorem of Boyle's which states that, in an appropriate sense, all such flows are alike. We prove that the stochastic version of this classification is non-trivial by exhibiting a certain invariant, and show that this invariant is complete in a particular case, although not in general. Symbolic flows are important as models of basic sets of Axiom A flows, and so we discuss the significance of our results for this latter type of flow.

Let N be the class of meromorphic functions f with the following properties: f has finitely many poles;f′ has finitely many multiple zeros; the superattracting fixed points of f are zeros of f′ and vice versa, with finitely many exceptions; f has finite order. It is proved that if f ∈ N, then f does not have wandering domains. Moreover, if f ∈ N and if ∞ is among the limit functions of fn in a cycle of periodic domains, then this cycle contains a singularity of f−1. (Here fn denotes the nth iterate of f) These results are applied to study Newton's method for entire functions g of the form where p and q are polynomials and where c is a constant. In this case, the Newton iteration function f(z) = z − g(z)/g′(z) is in N. It follows that fn(z) converges to zeros of g for all z in the Fatou set of f, if this is the case for all zeros z of g″. Some of the results can be extended to the relaxed Newton method.

We prove that the crossed product of the CAR algebra M2∞ by the shift is an inductive limit of homogeneous algebras over the circle with fibres full matrix algebras. As a consequence the crossed product has real rank zero, and where is the Cuntz algebra of order 2.

Let Ω be a totally disconnected compact metrizable space, and let α be a minimal homeomorphism of Ω. Let σ be a homeomorphism of order 2 on Ω such that ασ = σα−1, and assume that σ or ασ has a fixed point. We prove (Theorem 3.5) that the crossed product is an AF-algebra.

We prove that an infinite W ⊂ (0, 1) is an ω-limit set for a continuous map ƒ of [0,1] with zero topological entropy iff W = Q ∪ P where Q is a Cantor set, and P is countable, disjoint from Q, dense in W if non-empty, and such that for any interval J contiguous to Q, card (J ∩ P) ≤ 1 if 0 or 1 is in J, and card (J ∩ P) ≤ 2 otherwise. Moreover, we prove a conjecture by A. N. Šarkovskii from 1967 that P can contain points from infinitely many orbits, and consequently, that the system of ω-limit sets containing Q and contained in W, can be uncountable.

Let G be an abstract finite group. For an action α of G on a shift of finite type (SFT) S we introduce the periodic data of α, a computable finite-ordered set of complex polynomials. We show that two actions of G on possibly different SFTs are conjugate on periodic points iff their periodic data coincide. For each subgroup H of G the points fixed by α|H (the restriction of α to H) form a subsystem of S, which is of finite type. Our result shows that the zeta functions of these subsystems determine the conjugacy class (on periodic points) of α up to finitely many possibilities.

The orbit space of a finite skew action on an SFT S, endowed with the homeomorphism induced by S, is shown to have a zeta function equal to the zeta function of an SFT which is a left-closing quotient of S. We show that this zeta function equals the zeta function of S iff the skew action is inert with respect to a certain power of S.

Finally we consider functions of the periodic data as for example gyration numbers.

This paper is about the existence of transitive non-hyperbolic attractors with corresponding SRB measures for arcs of diffeomorphisms crossing the boundary of the Axiom A systems, obtained through an elementary generic bifurcation (Hopf, saddle-node or flip) on a transitive Anosov diffeomorphism or an attracting basic set.

In this paper we discuss the topology and dynamics of Eλ(z) = λez when λ is real and λ > 1/e. It is known that the Julia set of Eλ is the entire plane in this case. Our goal is to show that there are certain natural invariant subsets for Eλ which are topologically Knaster-like continua. Moreover, the dynamical behavior on these invariant sets is quite tame. We show that the only trivial kinds of α- and ω-limit sets are possible.

We study the problem of lifting ergodicity to certain skew-product extensions over shifts of finite type. This can be done by computing the asymptotic range of the defining cocycle. For a class of ergodic shift-invariant measures and a class of functions (defining conservative extensions) we give a characterization of ergodicity in terms of weights of periodic orbits in the shift space.

For a certain pair of discrete measured ergodic equivalence relations, we specify how one is imbedded into the other and obtain a factor and its subfactor. For this pair of factors index theory is developed. We obtain an index formula, an ‘extended’ relation corresponding to the basic extension, and so on. Our formulas as well as construction are very explicit and are given in terms of ‘measure theoretic’ data. We also present examples showing the contrast between type III0 index theory and type II1 (or IIIλ) index theory.

where d = log 2/log 3, and c is the almost-sure value of the right-hand order-two density of the middle-third Cantor set. The proof uses renormalization to a scaling flow, plus identification of (M, σ) as a tower over the Kakutani-von Neumann dyadic odometer.

We give necessary conditions for an endomorphism of the interval not to be C2+α-approximated by endomorphisms having a link between critical points. We apply these techniques to show that on a C2+α-generic set of unimodal maps the endomorphisms are either Axiom A or there exists an ergodic measure with zero Lyapunov exponent. Applying this result we prove the formula conjectured by Eckmann and Ruelle for the rate of escape of the complement of the basin of the sinks. We add some remarks on the C2-stability conjecture.

The enveloping semigroup of a flow (X, T) has been used to study its dynamical properties. In this paper a detailed study is made of the class of enveloping semigroups which arise in the study of flows where T is a subgroup of GL(V) and X is the associated projective space, P(V).

A structure theorem is established for amenable actions of a countable discrete group.

Let f be an Axiom A diffeomorphism, Ω its non wandering set, µ the Gibbs measure for the Lipschitz continuous potential. We consider the (suitably normalized) return times of the orbit to the ε-neighborhood of a point z ∈ Ω and prove that for µ-a.e. z the sequence of the normalized return times converges to the Poisson point process in finite dimensional distribution as ε → 0.

Let (resp. ) be a smooth contact flow on a compact manifold V1 (resp.) V2 with Anosov splitting of class C1. We show that every time-preserving conjugacy Λ:(V1, )→( V2, ) is necessarily of class C2.

This paper studies the structure of isometric extensions of compact metric topological dynamical systems with ℤ action and gives two decompositions of the general case to a more structured case. Suppose that Y → X is a M-isometric extension. An extension, Z, of Y is constructed which is also a G-isometric extension of X, where G is the group of isometries of M. The first construction shows that, provided that (X, T) is transitive, there are almost-automorphic extensions Y′ → Y and X′ → X, so that Y′ is homeomorphic to X′ × M and the natural projection Y′ → X′ is a group extension. The second shows that, provided that (X, T) is minimal, there is a G-action on Z which commutes with T and which preserves fibres and acts on each of them minimally. Each individual orbit closure, Za, in Z is a G′-isometric extension of X, where G′ is a subgroup of G, and there is a G′-action on Za which commutes with T, preserves fibres and acts minimally on each of them. Two illustrations are presented. Of the first: to reprove a result of Furstenberg; that every distal point is IP*-recurrent. Of the second: to describe the minimal subsets in isometric extensions of minimal topological dynamical systems.
