We study the motion of a particle on a Riemannian 2-torus under the influence of a magnetic field and a Gaussian thermostat. We prove a Hopf type rigidity for this dynamical system without conjugate points.

For any $1\leq r\lt \infty $, we build on the disk, and therefore on any manifold, a ${C}^{r} $-diffeomorphism with no measure of maximal entropy.

In this paper we consider the sequence of Kakutani’s $\alpha $-refinements corresponding to the inverse of the golden ratio (which we call the Kakutani–Fibonacci sequence of partitions) and associate to it an ergodic interval exchange (which we call the Kakutani–Fibonacci transformation) using the ‘cutting–stacking’ technique. We prove that the orbit of the origin under this map coincides with a low discrepancy sequence (which we call the Kakutani–Fibonacci sequence of points), which has also been considered by other authors.

It is shown that if an infinite synchronized system has a flip, then it has infinitely many non-conjugate flips, and that the result cannot be extended to the class of coded systems.

Bowen showed that a continuous expansive map with specification has a unique measure of maximal entropy. We show that the conclusion remains true under weaker non-uniform versions of these hypotheses. To this end, we introduce the notions of obstructions to expansivity and specification, and show that if the entropy of such obstructions is smaller than the topological entropy of the map, then there is a unique measure of maximal entropy.

We give a new proof of Moeckel’s result that for any finite index subgroup of the modular group, almost every real number has its regular continued fraction approximants equidistributed into the cusps of the subgroup according to the weighted cusp widths. Our proof uses a skew product over a cross-section for the geodesic flow on the modular surface. Our techniques show that the same result holds true for approximants found by Nakada’s $\alpha $-continued fractions, and also that the analogous result holds for approximants that are algebraic numbers given by any of Rosen’s $\lambda $-continued fractions, related to the infinite family of Hecke triangle Fuchsian groups.

In this paper we consider a filtered chain complex $C$ and its differential given by a connection matrix $\Delta $ which determines an associated spectral sequence $({E}^{r} , {d}^{r} )$. We present an algorithm which sweeps the connection matrix in order to span the modules ${E}^{r} $ in terms of bases of $C$ and gives the differentials ${d}^{r} $. In this process a sequence of similar connection matrices and associated transition matrices are produced. This algebraic procedure can be viewed as a continuation, where the transition matrices give information about the bifurcation behavior. We introduce directed graphs, called flow and bifurcation schematics, that depict bifurcations that could occur if the sequence of connection matrices and transition matrices were realized in a continuation of a Morse decomposition, and we present a dynamic interpretation theorem that provides conditions on a parameterized family of flows under which such a continuation could occur.

We show that if $(X, T)$ is an extension of an aperiodic subshift (a subsystem of $(\mathop{\{ 1, 2, \ldots , l\} }\nolimits ^{ \mathbb{Z} } , \mathrm{shift} )$ for some $l\in \mathbb{N} $) and has mean dimension $\mathrm{mdim} (X, T)\lt (D/ 2), D\in \mathbb{N} $, then it can be equivariantly embedded in $(\mathop{(\mathop{[0, 1] }\nolimits ^{D} )}\nolimits ^{ \mathbb{Z} } , \mathrm{shift} )$. The result is sharp. If $(X, T)$ is an extension of an aperiodic zero-dimensional system then it can be equivariantly embedded in $(\mathop{(\mathop{[0, 1] }\nolimits ^{D+ 1} )}\nolimits ^{ \mathbb{Z} } , \mathrm{shift} )$.

Let $f: X\longrightarrow X$ be a map of a continuum. In this paper we examine the following dynamical conditions on $f$: (1) $f$ is continuum-wise fully expansive; (2) $f$ is weakly continuum-wise fully expansive; (3) $f$ is mixing; (4) $f$ is weakly mixing. We first show that (1) implies (2), (2) implies (3) and (3) implies (4). Then we investigate what topological conditions will force the reverse implications to hold and give examples of when the reverse conditions do not hold. In particular, a map of the universal dendrite is given that is weakly mixing but not mixing.

We prove that every compact manifold without boundary admits a pair of diffeomorphisms that generates ${C}^{1} $ robustly minimal dynamics. We apply the results to the construction of blenders and robustly transitive skew product diffeomorphisms.

Let the circle act symplectically on a compact, connected symplectic manifold $M$. If there are exactly three fixed points, $M$ is equivariantly symplectomorphic to $\mathbb{CP}^{2}$.

We completely classify the extreme tracial states on the cores of the ${C}^{\ast } $-algebras associated with self-similar maps on compact metric spaces. We present a complete list of them. The extreme tracial states are the union of the discrete type tracial states given by measures supported on the finite orbits of the branch points and a continuous type tracial state given by the Hutchinson measure on the original self-similar set.

Roth type irrational rotation numbers have several equivalent arithmetical characterizations as well as several equivalent characterizations in terms of the dynamics of the corresponding circle rotations. In this paper we investigate how to generalize Roth-like Diophantine conditions to interval exchange maps. If one considers the dynamics in parameter space one can introduce two non-equivalent Roth type conditions, the first (condition (Z)) by means of the Zorich cocycle [Finite Gauss measure on the space of interval exchange transformations. Lyapunov exponents. Ann. Inst. Fourier 46(2) (1996), 325–370], the second (condition (A)) by means of a further acceleration of the continued fraction algorithm by Marmi–Moussa–Yoccoz introduced in [The cohomological equation for Roth type interval exchange maps, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 18 (2005), 823–872]. A third very natural condition (condition (D)) arises by considering the distance between the discontinuity points of the iterates of the map. If one considers the dynamics of an interval exchange map in phase space then one can introduce the notion of Diophantine type by considering the asymptotic scaling of return times pointwise or with respect to uniform convergence (respectively conditions (R) and (U)). In the case of circle rotations all the above conditions are equivalent. For interval exchange maps of three intervals we show that (D) and (A) are equivalent and imply (Z), (U) and (R), which are equivalent among them. For maps of four intervals or more we prove several results; the only relation that we cannot decide is whether (Z) implies (R) or not.

We consider infinite measure-preserving non-primitive self-similar tiling systems in Euclidean space ${ \mathbb{R} }^{d} $. We establish the second-order ergodic theorem for such systems, with exponent equal to the Hausdorff dimension of a graph-directed self-similar set associated with the substitution rule.

A topological dynamical system was defined by Blanchard [Fully Positive Topological Entropy and Topological Mixing (Symbolic Dynamics and Applications (in honor of R. L. Adler), 135). American Mathematical Society Contemporary Mathematics, Providence, RI, 1992, pp. 95–105] to have topologically completely positive entropy (or TCPE) if its only zero entropy factor is the dynamical system consisting of a single fixed point. For ${ \mathbb{Z} }^{d} $ shifts of finite type, we give a simple condition equivalent to having TCPE. We use our characterization to derive a similar equivalent condition to TCPE for the subclass of ${ \mathbb{Z} }^{d} $ group shifts, which was proved by Lind and Schmidt in the abelian case [Homoclinic points of algebraic ${ \mathbb{Z} }^{d} $-actions. J. Amer. Math. Soc. 12(4) (1999), 953–980] and by Boyle and Schraudner in the general case [${ \mathbb{Z} }^{d} $ group shifts and Bernoulli factors. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 28(2) (2008), 367–387]. We also give an example of a ${ \mathbb{Z} }^{2} $ shift of finite type which has TCPE but is not even topologically transitive, and prove a result about block gluing ${ \mathbb{Z} }^{d} $ SFTs motivated by our characterization of TCPE.

A Smale space is a chaotic dynamical system with canonical coordinates of contracting and expanding directions. The basic sets for Smale’s Axiom $A$ systems are a key class of examples. We consider the special case of irreducible Smale spaces with zero-dimensional contracting directions, and characterize these as stationary inverse limits satisfying certain conditions.
