In this note we derive the local asymptotic power function of the standardized averaged Dickey–Fuller panel unit root statistic of Im, Pesaran, and Shin (2003, Journal of Econometrics, 115, 53–74), allowing for heterogeneous deterministic intercept terms. We consider the situation where the deviation of the initial observation from the underlying intercept term in each individual time series may not be asymptotically negligible. We find that power decreases monotonically as the magnitude of the initial conditions increases, in direct contrast to what is usually observed in the univariate case. Finite-sample simulations confirm the relevance of this result for practical applications, demonstrating that the power of the test can be very low for values of T and N typically encountered in practice.

This paper studies a procedure to combine individual forecasts that achieve theoretical optimal performance. The results apply to a wide variety of loss functions and only require a tail condition on the data sequences. The theoretical results show that the bounds are also valid in the case of time varying combination weights.

In many stated choice experiments researchers observe the random variables Vt, Xt, and Yt = 1{U + δ⊤Xt + εt < Vt}, t ≤ T, where δ is an unknown parameter and U and εt are unobservable random variables. We show that under weak assumptions the distributions of U and εt and also the unknown parameter δ can be consistently estimated using a sieved maximum likelihood estimation procedure.

In this paper, we propose nonparametric estimators of sharp bounds on the distribution of treatment effects of a binary treatment and establish their asymptotic distributions. We note the possible failure of the standard bootstrap with the same sample size and apply the fewer-than-n bootstrap to making inferences on these bounds. The finite sample performances of the confidence intervals for the bounds based on normal critical values, the standard bootstrap, and the fewer-than-n bootstrap are investigated via a simulation study. Finally we establish sharp bounds on the treatment effect distribution when covariates are available.

Fractionally integrated time series, which have become an important modeling tool over the last two decades, are obtained by applying the fractional filter to a weakly dependent (short memory) sequence. Weakly dependent sequences are characterized by absolutely summable impulse response coefficients of their Wold representation. The weights bn decay at the rate nd−1 and are not absolutely summable for long memory models (d > 0). It has been believed that this rate is inherited by the impulse responses of any long memory fractionally integrated model. We show that this conjecture does not hold in such generality, and we establish a simple necessary and sufficient condition for the rate nd−1 to be inherited by fractionally integrated processes.

Least absolute deviations (LAD) estimation of linear time series models is considered under conditional heteroskedasticity and serial correlation. The limit theory of the LAD estimator is obtained without assuming the finite density condition for the errors that is required in standard LAD asymptotics. The results are particularly useful in application of LAD estimation to financial time series data.

In this paper we derive an alternative asymptotic approximation to the sampling distribution of the limited information maximum likelihood estimator and a bias-corrected version of the two-stage least squares estimator. The approximation is obtained by allowing the number of instruments and the concentration parameter to grow at the same rate as the sample size. More specifically, we allow for potentially nonnormal error distributions and obtain the conventional asymptotic distribution and the results of Bekker (1994, Econometrica 62, 657–681) and Bekker and Van der Ploeg (2005, Statistica Neerlandica 59, 139–267) as special cases. The results show that when the error distribution is not normal, in general both the properties of the instruments and the third and fourth moments of the errors affect the asymptotic variance. We compare our findings with those in the recent literature on many and weak instruments.
