In this study we examined variations in ore and other trace-metal concentrations in titanite, a ubiquitous product of magmatic (and subsequent sub-solidus) crystallisation in oxidised silicic magmas. Accessory titanite occurs in the Tuolumne Intrusive Suite (TIS), Sierra Nevada Batholith, as euhedral to anhedral, poikilitic, or interstitial grains. Zoned crystals of titanite were analysed by electron microprobe and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence for major and trace elements. Backscatter electron images reveal zoning, with bright areas correlating positively with total REE concentrations. REE concentrations generally decrease toward the edge of titanite crystals; however, some crystals are reversely zoned, and others exhibit oscillatory or patchy zoning; some grains contain discrete anhedral cores. Most elements in magmatic titanite decrease in concentration towards crystal rims, independent of host rock composition.

At least one major reduction event in the magma chamber(s) transiently stabilised ilmenite, now present only as inclusions in titanite, and resulted in a reduction in the REE concentration in titanite. We suggest the hypothesis that the reduction in the REE concentration in these zones is due to the diminished activity of the (REE)Fe3+ Ca−1Ti−1 exchange component; however, the scatter in the data, together with the operation of other exchange vectors for Fe and Al, did not allow us to test this hypothesis herein. Secondary (i.e. sub solidus, hydrothermal) titanite can be recognised on the basis of its chemistry, sometimes by its anhedral form, and by its position as an alteration rim around primary magmatic phases; however, secondary titanite growth on primary titanite crystals may be harder to discern. Secondary titanite rims on magnetite contain higher Cr, Zr and Mo, and lower REE, relative to magmatic titanite. U/Th ratios increase toward the rim of most titanite grains; however, Th decreases in concentration from core to rim. This is due, most likely, to complications resulting from the coupled substitutions necessary for replacement of Ca by tetravalent Th; factors of this sort are commonly overlooked in trace element analysis.

The analysed titanites are from rocks of the normally zoned TIS which ranges in 87Sr/86Sri, from 0·7059 (tonalite and quartz-diorite) to 0·7066 (granite). Many element ratios in the titanites exhibit little to no functional dependence on 87Sr/86Sri. However, log Mo/W increases with increasing 87Sr/86Sri, of the host unit from the equigranular quartz-diorite and tonalite, to the interior granodiorites, possibly reflecting the greater crustal contribution to the interior, more felsic units. Neither Mo nor W increase significantly from core to rim in titanite. If these trends are indicative of the general behaviour of these elements during in-situ fractionation, then these data suggest that Mo and W are not strongly incompatible, and indeed may behave compatibly, in some titaniteand magnetite-bearing granodioritic magmas.

The Lebowa Granite Suite of the Bushveld Complex is a large, 2054 Ma old, A-type batholith, characterised by numerous relatively small magmato-hydrothermal, polymetallic ore deposits. The mineralisation is represented by a three-stage paragenetic sequence: early magmatic Sn-W-Mo-F ores (600°C > T > 400°C), followed by a Cu-Pb-Zn-As-Ag-Au paragenesis (400°C > T > 200°C) and then late-stage Fe-F-U mineralisation (< 200°C). The first stage of mineralisation (typified by the endogranitic Zaaiplaats tin deposit) is related to incompatible trace element concentration during crystal fractionation and subsequent fluid saturation of the magma. Evolution of the late magmatic fluids as they were channelled along fractures, as well as mingling with externally derived connate or meteoric fluids, resulted in the deposition of the second stage of mineralisation (typified by the fracture-related, endogranitic Spoedwel and Albert deposits and the exogranitic, sediment-hosted Rooiberg mine) which is dominated by polymetallic sulphide ores. As the externally derived fluid component became progressively more dominant, oxidation of the polymetallic sulphide assemblage and precipitation of hematite, pitchblende and fluorite occurred generally along the same fracture systems that hosted the earlier sulphide paragenesis.

Small hydrothermal zircons trapped along quartz growth zones from the Spoedwel deposit yield a U-Pb concordia age of 1957 ± 15 Ma. Whole-rock Rb-Sr age determinations from the Lebowa Granite Suite fall in the range 1790 ± 114 Ma to 1604 ± 70 Ma and are interpreted to reflect alkali element mobility and isotopic resetting during exhumation of the Bushveld granite. In contrast to thermal modelling which indicates that hydrothermal activity should have ceased within 4 my of emplacement, isotopic evidence suggests that mineralisation was long-lived, but episodic, and that fluid flow events were linked to major periods of Palaeo- and Mesoproterozoic orogenic activity along the margins of the Kaapvaal Craton. During these orogenic episodes, fluid flow was enhanced by tectonically induced fluid over-pressuring and/or exhumation of the Bushveld Complex.

Multidisciplinary three-dimensional modelling, involving geophysical, structural and geochemical data, has been used to study the relationships between magmatism, tectonics, fluid circulation and mineralisation in the northern Limousin, and to provide P-T-Z-t paths constrained by the available dating. The ore deposit occurrence displays little spatial relationship with granites emplaced in the 360-320 Ma period, probably because the low global permeability and tectonic regime did not allowed vertical fluid exchanges to be established. In contrast, the change in the tectonic regime induced by the delamination of the lower lithosphere (320-300 Ma), and characterised by the passage to general extension, has played a major metallogenic role. However, the ore deposit processes appear to be specific to each metal. Most of the W-Sn deposits appear to be synchronous with rare metal granites emplacement, at c. 310 Ma, that allowed the focus of fluids of different origins towards the apex of plutons. In contrast, for Au and U, the whole mineralisation process covers several tens of-millions of years. It is controlled by the regional tectonic evolution of the Limousin area during the same period, and especially by a rapid exhumation of the ductile crust which occurred in the 310-300 Ma period.

The 370 Ma peraluminous South Mountain Batholith (SMB) intrudes Meguma Supergroup metasedimentary rocks in Nova Scotia. The New Ross area of the SMB contains polymetallic mineralisation (Sn, W, U, Mo, Cu and Mn) in pegmatite, greisen and vein directly or indirectly associated with highly evolved fractions of the SMB. Eight mineral deposits from this area have several fluid inclusion types hosted by quartz: (1) monophase liquid (L); (2) monophase vapour (V); (3) aqueous, L-V (4) aqueous, L-rich + solids; (5) aqueous, L-rich + halite. Inclusions have irregular to equant shapes and are pseudo-secondary or secondary. The irregularity and variability of L:V ratios within fluid inclusion populations suggest post-entrapment modifications of inclusions (i.e. necking).

Thermometric data indicate three distinct fluids in terms of salinity: (1) 19-25 wt. % equiv. NaCl (rarely 14-25 wt. % NaCl equiv.), (2) 29-43 wt. % equiv. NaCl, and (3) 0-9 wt. % equiv. NaCl. Temperatures of first melting and ice/hydrohalife melting indicate CaCl2 in solution. Proximity of the deposits to Meguma Supergroup metasedimentary rocks suggests that this Ca component may be externally derived. The majority of the low-salinity fluid population has the composition of meteoric water. Electron microprobe analyses of artificially decrepitated mounds identify Na, Ca and K as major solutes, with a continuum in terms of compositions. Other solute components in the mounds are Fe and Ba, and a variety of metals of unknown speciation also occur (Cu, Zn, Fe, Ni). Homogenisation temperatures (Th) range from c. 80°C to 370°C, but for inclusion assemblages the range is 10°C to 20°C. Given the 3 kbar depth of emplacement of the SMB, estimated entrapment temperatures are c. 200°C to 550°C. The fluid inclusion data appear to reflect: (1) trapping of mixed Na-K-Ca brines during isobaric cooling in pegmatite and greisen deposits as indicated by large ranges in Th; (2) formation of deposits at different ambient pressures (i.e. depth); and (3) mixing of fluids of different reservoirs (i.e. magmatic, metamorphic, meteoric).
