A characterization of the space of symmetric Laurent polynomials of type (BC)n, which vanish on a certain set of submanifolds, is given by using the Koornwinder–Macdonald polynomials. A similar characterization was given previously for symmetric polynomials of type An by using the Macdonald polynomials. We use a new method which exploits the duality relation. The method simplifies a part of the proof in the An case.

We determine the local deformation rings of sufficiently generic mod $l$ representations of the Galois group of a $p$-adic field, when $l \neq p$, relating them to the space of $q$-power-stable semisimple conjugacy classes in the dual group. As a consequence, we give a local proof of the $l \neq p$ Breuil–Mézard conjecture of the author, in the tame case.

We consider a mod 7 Galois representation attached to a genus 2 Siegel cusp form of level 1 and weight 28 and using some of its Fourier coefficients and eigenvalues computed by N. Skoruppa and the classification of maximal subgroups of PGSp(4,p) we show that its image is as large as possible. This gives a realization of PGSp(4,7) as a Galois group over ℚ and the corresponding number field provides a non-solvable extension of ℚ which ramifies only at 7.

We prove a certain Riemann–Roch-type formula for symmetric powers of Galois modules on Dedekind schemes which, in the number field or function field case, specializes to a formula of Burns and Chinburg for Cassou–Noguès–Taylor operations.

We prove a 1966 conjecture of Tate concerning the Artin–Tate pairing on the Brauer group of a surface over a finite field, which is the analog of the Cassels–Tate pairing. Tate asked if this pairing is always alternating and we find an affirmative answer, which is somewhat surprising in view of the work of Poonen–Stoll on the Cassels–Tate pairing. Our method is based on studying a connection between the Artin–Tate pairing and (generalizations of) Steenrod operations in étale cohomology. Inspired by an analogy to the algebraic topology of manifolds, we develop tools allowing us to calculate the relevant étale Steenrod operations in terms of characteristic classes.

Nous développons dans cet article des techniques d'aplatissement des faisceaux cohérents en géométrie de Berkovich, en nous inspirant de la stratégie générale que Raynaud et Gruson ont mise en œuvre pour traiter le problème analogue en théorie des schémas. Nous donnons ensuite quelques applications à l’étude des morphismes entre espaces analytiques compacts, et obtenons notamment une description de l'image d'un tel morphisme.

Fix a prime $p\geq 11$. We show that there exists a positive integer $m$ such that any subset of $\mathbb {F}_p^n\times \mathbb {F}_p^n$ containing no nontrivial configurations of the form $(x,y)$, $(x,y+z)$, $(x,y+2z)$, $(x+z,y)$ must have density $\ll 1/\log _{m}{n}$, where $\log _{m}$ denotes the $m$-fold iterated logarithm. This gives the first reasonable bound in the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem for a two-dimensional four-point configuration in any setting.

Let $G$ be a split semisimple algebraic group over a field and let $A^*$ be an oriented cohomology theory in the Levine–Morel sense. We provide a uniform approach to the $A^*$-motives of geometrically cellular smooth projective $G$-varieties based on the Hopf algebra structure of $A^*(G)$. Using this approach, we provide various applications to the structure of motives of twisted flag varieties.

We prove the Green–Lazarsfeld secant conjecture [Green and Lazarsfeld, On the projective normality of complete linear series on an algebraic curve, Invent. Math. 83 (1986), 73–90; Conjecture (3.4)] for extremal line bundles on curves of arbitrary gonality, subject to explicit genericity assumptions.

In this article, we apply the methods of our work on Fontaine’s theory in equal characteristics to the φ/𝔖-modules of Breuil and Kisin. Thanks to a previous article of Kisin, this yields a new and rather elementary proof of the theorem ‘weakly admissible implies admissible’ of Colmez and Fontaine.

In this paper we study persistence features of topological entropy and periodic orbit growth of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on surfaces with respect to Hofer's metric. We exhibit stability of these dynamical quantities in a rather strong sense for a specific family of maps studied by Polterovich and Shelukhin. A crucial ingredient comes from enhancement of lower bounds for the topological entropy and orbit growth forced by a periodic point, formulated in terms of the geometric self-intersection number and a variant of Turaev's cobracket of the free homotopy class that it induces. Those bounds are obtained within the framework of Le Calvez and Tal's forcing theory.

A zero set of a holomorphic vector field is totally degenerate, if the endomorphism of the conormal sheaf induced by the vector field is identically zero. By studying a class of foliations generalizing foliations of ${\rm C}^*$-actions, we show that if a projective manifold admits a holomorphic vector field with a smooth totally degenerate zero component, then the manifold is stably birational to that component of the zero set. When the vector field has an isolated totally degenerate zero, we prove that the manifold is rational. This is a special case of Carrell's conjecture.

La formule des traces relative de Jacquet–Rallis (pour les groupes unitaires ou les groupes linéaires généraux) est une identité entre des périodes des représentations automorphes et des distributions géométriques. Selon Jacquet et Rallis, une comparaison de ces deux formules des traces relatives devrait aboutir à une démonstration des conjectures de Gan–Gross–Prasad et Ichino–Ikeda pour les groupes unitaires. Les termes géométriques des groupes unitaires ou des groupes linéaires sont indexés par les points rationnels d'un espace quotient commun. Nous établissons que ces termes géométriques peuvent être vus comme des fonctionnelles sur des espaces d'intégrales orbitales semi-simples régulières locales. En outre, nous montrons que point par point ces distributions sont en fait égales, via l'identification des espaces d'intégrales orbitales locales donnée par le transfert et le lemme fondamental (essentiellement connus dans cette situation). Cela donne leur comparaison et cela clôt la partie géométrique du programme de Jacquet–Rallis. Notre résultat principal est donc un analogue de la stabilisation de la partie géométrique de la formule des traces due à Langlands, Kottwitz et Arthur.

Let $ \mathcal{X} $ be a curve over ${ \mathbb{F} }_{q} $ and let $N( \mathcal{X} )$, $g( \mathcal{X} )$ be its number of rational points and genus respectively. The Ihara constant $A(q)$ is defined by $A(q)= {\mathrm{lim~sup} }_{g( \mathcal{X} )\rightarrow \infty } N( \mathcal{X} )/ g( \mathcal{X} )$. In this paper, we employ a variant of Serre’s class field tower method to obtain an improvement of the best known lower bounds on $A(2)$ and $A(3)$.

Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a rank-2 bundle over a smooth complex projective surface X. Whenever the subscheme of zeros of a global section of $\mathcal{E}$ is zero-dimensional, it gives a geometric realization of the second Chern class $c_2(\mathcal{E})$. Taking the incidence correspondence

and considering the Zariski open subset $U_f \subset \bf{P} (H^0(\mathcal{E}))$ over which the morphism p2 is finite, we have

a family of zero-dimensional subschemes of X of length $\deg (c_2(\mathcal{E}))$. This can be viewed as a distinguished geometric representative of $c_2(\mathcal{E})$.

We define a new invariant of $\mathcal{E}$ which can be viewed as a ‘lifting’ of $c_2(\mathcal{E})$ to Uf. This invariant is a sequence of sections of some coherent sheaves on Uf. These sheaves are built from the following cohomology cup-products:

The main property of our invariant is as follows: either it determines the family $\mathcal{Z}_f \stackrel{p_2}{\longrightarrow} U_f$, or the vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$ is ‘special’. The speciality is expressed in terms of the special geometry of zero-loci of global sections of $\mathcal{E}$ and the special geometry of X.

The sequence of sections entering the definition of our invariant is obtained by starting with the one defined by the cup-product $\gamma_2$ and deriving others inductively by using a geometric interpretation of a part of the cup-product $\gamma_1$ together with the Grothendieck residue map. So one can view our invariant as $\gamma_2$ together with some kind of higher-order cohomology cup-products.

The emergence of these higher-order cohomology cup-products is explained conceptually as higher-order derivatives of a natural deformation of $\gamma_2$ associated to a certain ‘natural’ deformation of the complex structure on $\mathcal{E}$. The variety of these natural deformations of $\mathcal{E}$ has all the features of the classical Jacobian of curves: it carries a distinguished divisor which either determines the family $\mathcal{Z}_f \stackrel{p_2}{\longrightarrow} U_f$ or ‘sees’ that $\mathcal{E}$ is special in the aforementioned sense. An essentially new feature of this Jacobian of $\mathcal{E}$ is that it also carries a variation of Hodge-like structures which arises naturally from our invariant.

We compute the connective spectra of maps from $\mathbb {Z}$ to the Picard spectra of the spherical Witt vectors associated with perfect rings of characteristic $p$. As an application, we determine the connective spectrum of maps from $\mathbb {Z}$ to the Picard spectrum of the sphere spectrum.

A new family of sheaves has been recently studied by M. Kashiwara and P. Schapira generalizing to constructible sheaves the notion of moderate and formal cohomology. We prove comparison theorems when we regard these sheaves as solutions of a $\cal D$-module. These results are natural generalizations of those of Y. Laurent and the author.

We give dimension formulas for the cotangent cohomology groups Ti for all rational surface singularities. The computations take place on the first blow-up of the singularity.

Let Rk(n) denote the number of representations of a natural number n as the sum of three cubes and a kth power. In this paper, we show that R3(n) [Lt ] n5/9+ε, and that R4(n) [Lt ] n47/90+ε, where ε > 0 is arbitrary. This extends work of Hooley concerning sums of four cubes, to the case of sums of mixed powers. To achieve these bounds, we use a variant of the Selberg sieve method introduced by Hooley to study sums of two kth powers, and we also use various exponential sum estimates.
