We study the action of a real reductive group G on a real submanifold X of a Kähler manifold Z. We suppose that the action of G extends holomorphically to an action of the complexified group and that with respect to a compatible maximal compact subgroup U of the action on Z is Hamiltonian. There is a corresponding gradient map where is a Cartan decomposition of . We obtain a Morse-like function on X. Associated with critical points of are various sets of semistable points which we study in great detail. In particular, we have G-stable submanifolds Sβ of X which are called pre-strata. In cases where is proper, the pre-strata form a decomposition of X and in cases where X is compact they are the strata of a Morse-type stratification of X. Our results are generalizations of results of Kirwan obtained in the case where and X=Z is compact.

We develop spectral theory for the generator of the $q$-Boson (stochastic) particle system. Our central result is a Plancherel type isomorphism theorem for this system. This theorem has various implications. It proves the completeness of the Bethe ansatz for the $q$-Boson generator and consequently enables us to solve the Kolmogorov forward and backward equations for general initial data. Owing to a Markov duality with $q$-TASEP ($q$-deformed totally asymmetric simple exclusion process), this leads to moment formulas which characterize the fixed time distribution of $q$-TASEP started from general initial conditions. The theorem also implies the biorthogonality of the left and right eigenfunctions. We consider limits of our $q$-Boson results to a discrete delta Bose gas considered previously by van Diejen, as well as to another discrete delta Bose gas that describes the evolution of moments of the semi-discrete stochastic heat equation (or equivalently, the O’Connell–Yor semi-discrete directed polymer partition function). A further limit takes us to the delta Bose gas which arises in studying moments of the stochastic heat equation/Kardar–Parisi–Zhang equation.

We consider the problem of preservation of stability under the Fourier–Mukai transform ℱℰ:D(X)→D(Y ) on an abelian surface and a K3 surface. If Y is the moduli space of μ-stable sheaves on X with respect to a polarization H, we have a canonical polarization on Y and we have a correspondence between (X,H) and . We show that the stability with respect to these polarizations is preserved under ℱℰ, if the degree of stable sheaves on X is sufficiently large.

We prove that, near the boundary of weight space, the 2-adic eigencurve of tame level 1 can be written as an infinite disjoint union of ‘evenly spaced’ annuli, and on each annulus the slopes of the corresponding overconvergent eigenforms tend to zero.

In this paper we study the p-rank of Abelian prime-to-p covers of the generic r-pointed curve of genus g. There is an obvious bound on the p-rank of the cover. We show that it suffices to compute the p-rank of cyclic prime-to-p covers of the generic r-pointed curve of genus zero. In that situation, we show that, for large p, the p-rank of the cover is equal to the bound.

Smooth cubic hypersurfaces $X\subset \mathbb{P}^{5}$ (over $\mathbb{C}$) are linked to K3 surfaces via their Hodge structures, due to the work of Hassett, and via a subcategory ${\mathcal{A}}_{X}\subset \text{D}^{\text{b}}(X)$, due to the work of Kuznetsov. The relation between these two viewpoints has recently been elucidated by Addington and Thomas. In this paper, both aspects are studied further and extended to twisted K3 surfaces, which in particular allows us to determine the group of autoequivalences of ${\mathcal{A}}_{X}$ for the general cubic fourfold. Furthermore, we prove finiteness results for cubics with equivalent K3 categories and study periods of cubics in terms of generalized K3 surfaces.

Kac introduced the notion of the canonical decomposition for a dimension vector of a quiver. Here we will give an efficient algorithm to compute the canonical decomposition. Our study of the canonical decomposition for quivers with three vertices gives us fractal-like pictures.

The Severi degree is the degree of the Severi variety parametrizing plane curves of degree $d$ with ${\it\delta}$ nodes. Recently, Göttsche and Shende gave two refinements of Severi degrees, polynomials in a variable $y$, which are conjecturally equal, for large $d$. At $y=1$, one of the refinements, the relative Severi degree, specializes to the (non-relative) Severi degree. We give a tropical description of the refined Severi degrees, in terms of a refined tropical curve count for all toric surfaces. We also refine the equivalent count of floor diagrams for Hirzebruch and rational ruled surfaces. Our description implies that, for fixed ${\it\delta}$, the refined Severi degrees are polynomials in $d$ and $y$, for large $d$. As a consequence, we show that, for ${\it\delta}\leqslant 10$ and all $d\geqslant {\it\delta}/2+1$, both refinements of Göttsche and Shende agree and equal our refined counts of tropical curves and floor diagrams.

In this paper, we study special configurations of lines and points in the complex projective plane, so called k-nets. We describe the role of these configurations in studies of cohomology on arrangement complements. Our most general result is the restriction on k: it can equal only 3, 4, or 5. The most interesting class of nets is formed by 3-nets that relate to finite geometries, latin squares, loops, etc. All known examples of 3-nets in $\mathbb{P}^2$ realize finite Abelian groups. We study the question of which groups can be realized in this way. Our main result is that, except for groups with all invariant factors below 10, the realizable groups are isomorphic to subgroups of a 2-torus. This follows from the ‘algebraization’ result asserting that, in the dual plane, the points dual to lines of a net lie on a plane cubic.

A K3 category is by definition a Calabi–Yau category of dimension two. Geometrically K3 categories occur as bounded derived categories of (twisted) coherent sheaves on K3 or abelian surfaces. A K3 category is generic if there are no spherical objects (or just one up to shift). We study stability conditions on K3 categories as introduced by Bridgeland and prove his conjecture about the topology of the stability manifold and the autoequivalences group for generic twisted projective K3, abelian surfaces, and K3 surfaces with trivial Picard group.

We give another proof of Ekedahl, Lando, Shapiro, and Vainshtein's remarkable formula expressing Hurwitz numbers (counting covers of P1 with specified simple branch points, and specified branching over one other point) in terms of Hodge integrals. Our proof uses virtual localization on the moduli space of stable maps. We describe how the proof could be simplified by the proper algebro-geometric definition of a ‘relative space’. Such a space has recently been defined by J. Li.

The purpose of this work is to give a definition of a topological K-theory for dg-categories over $\mathbb{C}$ and to prove that the Chern character map from algebraic K-theory to periodic cyclic homology descends naturally to this new invariant. This topological Chern map provides a natural candidate for the existence of a rational structure on the periodic cyclic homology of a smooth proper dg-algebra, within the theory of noncommutative Hodge structures. The definition of topological K-theory consists in two steps: taking the topological realization of algebraic K-theory and inverting the Bott element. The topological realization is the left Kan extension of the functor ‘space of complex points’ to all simplicial presheaves over complex algebraic varieties. Our first main result states that the topological K-theory of the unit dg-category is the spectrum $\mathbf{BU}$. For this we are led to prove a homotopical generalization of Deligne’s cohomological proper descent, using Lurie’s proper descent. The fact that the Chern character descends to topological K-theory is established by using Kassel’s Künneth formula for periodic cyclic homology and the proper descent. In the case of a dg-category of perfect complexes on a separated scheme of finite type, we show that we recover the usual topological K-theory of complex points. We show as well that the Chern map tensorized with $\mathbb{C}$ is an equivalence in the case of a finite-dimensional associative algebra – providing a formula for the periodic homology groups in terms of the stack of finite-dimensional modules.

Simple, or Kleinian, singularities are classified by Dynkin diagrams of type $ADE$. Let $\mathfrak {g}$ be the corresponding finite-dimensional Lie algebra, and $W$ its Weyl group. The set of $\mathfrak {g}$-invariants in the basic representation of the affine Kac–Moody algebra $\hat {\mathfrak {g}}$ is known as a $\mathcal {W}$-algebra and is a subalgebra of the Heisenberg vertex algebra $\mathcal {F}$. Using period integrals, we construct an analytic continuation of the twisted representation of $\mathcal {F}$. Our construction yields a global object, which may be called a $W$-twisted representation of $\mathcal {F}$. Our main result is that the total descendant potential of the singularity, introduced by Givental, is a highest-weight vector for the $\mathcal {W}$-algebra.

This paper concerns the Galois theoretic behavior of the p-primary subgroup SelA(F)p of the Selmer group for an Abelian variety A defined over a number field F in an extension K/F such that the Galois group G(K/F) is a p-adic Lie group. Here p is any prime such that A has potentially good, ordinary reduction at all primes of F lying above p. The principal results concern the kernel and the cokernel of the natural map sK/F′ SelA(F′)p →  SelA(K)pG(K/F′) where F′ is any finite extension of F contained in K. Under various hypotheses on the extension K/F, it is proved that the kernel and cokernel are finite. More precise results about their structure are also obtained. The results are generalizations of theorems of B. Mazurand M. Harris.

A system of functional equations relating the Euler characteristics of moduli spaces of stable representations of quivers and the Euler characteristics of (Hilbert-scheme-type) framed versions of quiver moduli is derived. This is applied to wall-crossing formulas for the Donaldson–Thomas type invariants of M. Kontsevich and Y. Soibelman, in particular confirming their integrality.

We study the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Gushel–Mukai varieties. In the derived category of such a variety, we isolate a special semiorthogonal component, which is a K3 or Enriques category according to whether the dimension of the variety is even or odd. We analyze the basic properties of this category using Hochschild homology, Hochschild cohomology, and the Grothendieck group. We study the K3 category of a Gushel–Mukai fourfold in more detail. Namely, we show this category is equivalent to the derived category of a K3 surface for a certain codimension 1 family of rational Gushel–Mukai fourfolds, and to the K3 category of a birational cubic fourfold for a certain codimension 3 family. The first of these results verifies a special case of a duality conjecture which we formulate. We discuss our results in the context of the rationality problem for Gushel–Mukai varieties, which was one of the main motivations for this work.

Using the ‘slice filtration’, defined by effectivity conditions on Voevodsky's triangulated motives, we define spectral sequences converging to their motivic cohomology and étale motivic cohomology. These spectral sequences are particularly interesting in the case of mixed Tate motives as their $E_2$-terms then have a simple description. In particular this yields spectral sequences converging to the motivic cohomology of a split connected reductive group. We also describe in detail the multiplicative structure of the motive of a split torus.

We prove the following theorem characterizing Du Bois singularities. Suppose that $Y$ is smooth and that $X$ is a reduced closed subscheme. Let $\pi : \tilde{Y} \rightarrow Y$ be a log resolution of $X$ in $Y$ that is an isomorphism outside of $X$. If $E$ is the reduced pre-image of $X$ in $\tilde{Y}$, then $X$ has Du Bois singularities if and only if the natural map $\mathcal{O}_X \rightarrow R \pi_* \mathcal{O}_E$ is a quasi-isomorphism. We also deduce Kollár's conjecture that log canonical singularities are Du Bois in the special case of a local complete intersection and prove other results related to adjunction.

We investigate the large weight ($k\to\infty$) limiting statistics for the low lying zeros of a GL(4) and a GL(6) family of $L$-functions, $\{L(s,\phi \times f): f \in H_k\}$ and $\{L(s,\phi \times {\rm sym}^2 f): f \in H_k\}$; here $\phi$ is a fixed even Hecke–Maass cusp form and $H_k$ is a Hecke eigenbasis for the space $H_k$ of holomorphic cusp forms of weight $k$ for the full modular group. Katz and Sarnak conjecture that the behavior of zeros near the central point should be well modeled by the behavior of eigenvalues near 1 of a classical compact group. By studying the 1- and 2-level densities, we find evidence of underlying symplectic and SO(even) symmetry, respectively. This should be contrasted with previous results of Iwaniec–Luo–Sarnak for the families $\{L(s,f): f\in H_k\}$ and $\{L(s,{\rm sym}^2f): f\in H_k\}$, where they find evidence of orthogonal and symplectic symmetry, respectively. The present examples suggest a relation between the symmetry type of a family and that of its twistings, which will be further studied in a subsequent paper. Both the GL(4) and the GL(6) families above have all even functional equations, and neither is naturally split from an orthogonal family. A folklore conjecture states that such families must be symplectic, which is true for the first family but false for the second. Thus, the theory of low lying zeros is more than just a theory of signs of functional equations. An analysis of these families suggest that it is the second moment of the Satake parameters that determines the symmetry group.

We prove a decomposition formula of logarithmic Gromov–Witten invariants in a degeneration setting. A one-parameter log smooth family $X \longrightarrow B$ with singular fibre over $b_0\in B$ yields a family $\mathscr {M}(X/B,\beta ) \longrightarrow B$ of moduli stacks of stable logarithmic maps. We give a virtual decomposition of the fibre of this family over $b_0$ in terms of rigid tropical maps to the tropicalization of $X/B$. This generalizes one aspect of known results in the case that the fibre $X_{b_0}$ is a normal crossings union of two divisors. We exhibit our formulas in explicit examples.
