Let $q$ be a prime and $- D\lt - 4$ be an odd fundamental discriminant such that $q$ splits in $ \mathbb{Q} ( \sqrt{- D} )$. For $f$ a weight-zero Hecke–Maass newform of level $q$ and ${\Theta }_{\chi } $ the weight-one theta series of level $D$ corresponding to an ideal class group character $\chi $ of $ \mathbb{Q} ( \sqrt{- D} )$, we establish a hybrid subconvexity bound for $L(f\times {\Theta }_{\chi } , s)$ at $s= 1/ 2$ when $q\asymp {D}^{\eta } $ for $0\lt \eta \lt 1$. With this circle of ideas, we show that the Heegner points of level $q$ and discriminant $D$ become equidistributed, in a natural sense, as $q, D\rightarrow \infty $ for $q\leq {D}^{1/ 20- \varepsilon } $. Our approach to these problems is connected to estimating the ${L}^{2} $-restriction norm of a Maass form of large level $q$ when restricted to the collection of Heegner points. We furthermore establish bounds for quadratic twists of Hecke–Maass $L$-functions with simultaneously large level and large quadratic twist, and hybrid bounds for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions in certain ranges.

Let M be a hyperbolic surface and Γ(M) its extended mapping class group. We show that Γ(M) is isomorphic to the automorphism group of the following graph G(M). The set of vertices of G(M) is the set S(M) of nonseparating simple closed geodesics of M. Two vertices u and v of S(M) are related by an edge if u and v intersect exactly once in M. The graph G(M) can be thought of as a combinatorial model for M.

We find explicit free resolutions for the D-modules Dfs and D[s] fs / D[s] fs+1, where f is a reduced equation of a locally quasi-homogeneous free divisor. These results are based on the fact that every locally quasi-homogeneous free divisor is Koszul free, which is also proved in this paper.

We introduce a valuation-theoretic approach to the problem of semistable reduction (i.e. existence of logarithmic extensions on suitable covers) of overconvergent isocrystals with Frobenius structure. The key tool is the quasicompactness of the Riemann–Zariski space associated to the function field of a variety. We also make some initial reductions, which allow attention to be focused on valuations of height 1 and transcendence degree 0.

This paper generalizes the Gan–Gross–Prasad (GGP) conjectures that were earlier formulated for tempered or more generally generic L-packets to Arthur packets, especially for the non-generic L-packets arising from Arthur parameters. The paper introduces the key notion of a relevant pair of Arthur parameters that governs the branching laws for ${{\rm GL}}_n$ and all classical groups over both local fields and global fields. It plays a role for all the branching problems studied in Gan et al. [Symplectic local root numbers, central critical L-values and restriction problems in the representation theory of classical groups. Sur les conjectures de Gross et Prasad. I, Astérisque 346 (2012), 1–109] including Bessel models and Fourier–Jacobi models.

We investigate the distribution of real algebraic numbers of a fixed degree that have a close conjugate number, with the distance between the conjugate numbers being given as a function of their height. The main result establishes the ubiquity of such algebraic numbers in the real line and implies a sharp quantitative bound on their number. Although the main result is rather general, it implies new estimates on the least possible distance between conjugate algebraic numbers, which improve recent bounds obtained by Bugeaud and Mignotte. So far, the results à la Bugeaud and Mignotte have relied on finding explicit families of polynomials with clusters of roots. Here we suggest a different approach in which irreducible polynomials are implicitly tailored so that their derivatives assume certain values. We consider some applications of our main theorem, including generalisations of a theorem of Baker and Schmidt and a theorem of Bernik, Kleinbock and Margulis in the metric theory of Diophantine approximation.

Halász’s theorem gives an upper bound for the mean value of a multiplicative function $f$. The bound is sharp for general such $f$, and, in particular, it implies that a multiplicative function with $|f(n)|\leqslant 1$ has either mean value $0$, or is ‘close to’ $n^{it}$ for some fixed $t$. The proofs in the current literature have certain features that are difficult to motivate and which are not particularly flexible. In this article we supply a different, more flexible, proof, which indicates how one might obtain asymptotics, and can be modified to treat short intervals and arithmetic progressions. We use these results to obtain new, arguably simpler, proofs that there are always primes in short intervals (Hoheisel’s theorem), and that there are always primes near to the start of an arithmetic progression (Linnik’s theorem).

We develop a language that makes the analogy between geometry and arithmetic more transparent. In this language there exists a base field $\mathbb{F}$, ‘the field with one element’; there is a fully faithful functor from commutative rings to $\mathbb{F}$-rings; there is the notion of the $\mathbb{F}$-ring of integers of a real or complex prime of a number field $K$ analogous to the $p$-adic integers, and there is a compactification of $\operatorname{Spec}O_K$; there is a notion of tensor product of $\mathbb{F}$-rings giving the product of $\mathbb{F}$-schemes; in particular there is the arithmetical surface $\operatorname{Spec} O_K\times\operatorname{Spec} O_K$, the product taken over $\mathbb{F}$.

We compute the characters of the simple $\text{GL}$ -equivariant holonomic ${\mathcal{D}}$ -modules on the vector spaces of general, symmetric, and skew-symmetric matrices. We realize some of these ${\mathcal{D}}$ -modules explicitly as subquotients in the pole order filtration associated to the $\text{determinant}/\text{Pfaffian}$ of a generic matrix, and others as local cohomology modules. We give a direct proof of a conjecture of Levasseur in the case of general and skew-symmetric matrices, and provide counterexamples in the case of symmetric matrices. The character calculations are used in subsequent work with Weyman to describe the ${\mathcal{D}}$ -module composition factors of local cohomology modules with determinantal and Pfaffian support.

We derive lower bounds for the rank of Picard groups of modular varieties associated with natural congruence subgroups of the orthogonal group of an even lattice of signature (2, l). As an example we consider the Siegel modular group of genus 2. The analytic part of this paper also leads to certain class number identities.

The face ring of a homology manifold (without boundary) modulo a generic system of parameters is studied. Its socle is computed and it is verified that a particular quotient of this ring is Gorenstein. This fact is used to prove that the algebraic g-conjecture for spheres implies all enumerative consequences of its far-reaching generalization (due to Kalai) to manifolds. A special case of Kalai’s conjecture is established for homology manifolds that have a codimension-two face whose link contains many vertices.

Assuming the Tate conjecture and the computability of étale cohomology with finite coefficients, we give an algorithm that computes the Néron–Severi group of any smooth projective geometrically integral variety, and also the rank of the group of numerical equivalence classes of codimension $p$ cycles for any $p$.

Let p be a rational prime number. We refine Brauer‘s elementary diagonalisation argument to show that any system of r homogeneous polynomials of degree d, with rational coefficients, possesses a non-trivial p-adic solution provided only that the number of variables in this system exceeds $(rd^2)^2^(d-1)$. This conclusion improves on earlier results of Leep and Schmidt, and of Schmidt. The methods extend to provide analogous conclusions in field extensions of Q, and in purely imaginary extensions of Q. We also discuss lower bounds for the number of variables required to guarantee local solubility.

We explicitly compute all the slopes of the Hecke operator U2 acting on overconvergent 2-adic level 1 cusp forms of weight 0: the nth slope is 1 + 2v((3n)!/n!), where v denotes the 2-adic valuation. We formulate an explicit conjecture about what these slopes should be for weight k forms.

We show that the Kodaira dimension of the moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces of degree 2n in non negative if n = 42, 43, 51, 53, 55, 57, 59, 61, 66, 67, 69, 74, 83, 85, 105, 119 or 133. We use an automorphic form associated with the fake monster Lie algebra constructed by Borcherds.

We give an interpretation of the energy function and classically restricted one-dimensional sums associated to tensor products of level-zero fundamental representations of quantum affine algebras in terms of Lakshmibai–Seshadri paths of level-zero shape.

We prove the longstanding physics conjecture that there exists a unique two-parameter ${\mathcal {W}}_{\infty }$-algebra which is freely generated of type ${\mathcal {W}}(2,3,\ldots )$, and generated by the weights $2$ and $3$ fields. Subject to some mild constraints, all vertex algebras of type ${\mathcal {W}}(2,3,\ldots , N)$ for some $N$ can be obtained as quotients of this universal algebra. As an application, we show that for $n\geq 3$, the structure constants for the principal ${\mathcal {W}}$-algebras ${\mathcal {W}}^k({\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak l}_n, f_{\text {prin}})$ are rational functions of $k$ and $n$, and we classify all coincidences among the simple quotients ${\mathcal {W}}_k({\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak l}_n, f_{\text {prin}})$ for $n\geq 2$. We also obtain many new coincidences between ${\mathcal {W}}_k({\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak l}_n, f_{\text {prin}})$ and other vertex algebras of type ${\mathcal {W}}(2,3,\ldots , N)$ which arise as cosets of affine vertex algebras or nonprincipal ${\mathcal {W}}$-algebras.

Let X be a smooth complex Fano variety. We study ‘quasi-elementary’ contractions of fiber type of X, which are a natural generalization of elementary contractions of fiber type. If f:X→Y is such a contraction, then the Picard numbers satisfy ρX≤ρY+ρF, where F is a general fiber of f. We show that, if dim Y ≤3 and ρY≥4, then Y is smooth and Fano; if moreover ρY≥6, then X is a product. This yields sharp bounds on ρX when dim X=4 and X has a quasi-elementary contraction of fiber type, and other applications in higher dimensions.

In this paper we establish a general form of the mass transference principle for systems of linear forms conjectured in 2009. We also present a number of applications of this result to problems in Diophantine approximation. These include a general transference of Lebesgue measure Khintchine–Groshev type theorems to Hausdorff measure statements. The statements we obtain are applicable in both the homogeneous and inhomogeneous settings as well as allowing transference under any additional constraints on approximating integer points. In particular, we establish Hausdorff measure counterparts of some Khintchine–Groshev type theorems with primitivity constraints recently proved by Dani, Laurent and Nogueira.

Gaudin subalgebras are abelian Lie subalgebras of maximal dimension spanned by generators of the Kohno–Drinfeld Lie algebra . We show that Gaudin subalgebras form a variety isomorphic to the moduli space of stable curves of genus zero with n+1 marked points. In particular, this gives an embedding of in a Grassmannian of (n−1)-planes in an n(n−1)/2-dimensional space. We show that the sheaf of Gaudin subalgebras over is isomorphic to a sheaf of twisted first-order differential operators. For each representation of the Kohno–Drinfeld Lie algebra with fixed central character, we obtain a sheaf of commutative algebras whose spectrum is a coisotropic subscheme of a twisted version of the logarithmic cotangent bundle of .
