We present an $\ell$-adic trace formula for saturated and admissible dg-categories over a base monoidal differential graded (dg)-category. Moreover, we prove Künneth formulas for dg-category of singularities and for inertia-invariant vanishing cycles. As an application, we prove a categorical version of Bloch's conductor conjecture (originally stated by Spencer Bloch in 1985), under the additional hypothesis that the monodromy action of the inertia group is unipotent.

We undertake a systematic study of Lipschitz normally embedded normal complex surface germs. We prove, in particular, that the topological type of such a germ determines the combinatorics of its minimal resolution which factors through the blowup of its maximal ideal and through its Nash transform, as well as the polar curve and the discriminant curve of a generic plane projection, thus generalizing results of Spivakovsky and Bondil that were known for minimal surface singularities. In an appendix, we give a new example of a Lipschitz normally embedded surface singularity.

For complex simple Lie algebras of types B, C, and D, we provide new explicit formulas for the generators of the commutative subalgebra $\mathfrak z(\hat {\mathfrak g})\subset {{\mathcal {U}}}(t^{-1}\mathfrak g[t^{-1}])$ known as the Feigin–Frenkel centre. These formulas make use of the symmetrisation map as well as of some well-chosen symmetric invariants of $\mathfrak g$. There are some general results on the rôle of the symmetrisation map in the explicit description of the Feigin–Frenkel centre. Our method reduces questions about elements of $\mathfrak z(\hat {\mathfrak g})$ to questions on the structure of the symmetric invariants in a type-free way. As an illustration, we deal with type G$_2$ by hand. One of our technical tools is the map ${\sf m}\!\!: {{\mathcal {S}}}^{k}(\mathfrak g)\to \Lambda ^{2}\mathfrak g \otimes {{\mathcal {S}}}^{k-3}(\mathfrak g)$ introduced here. As the results show, a better understanding of this map will lead to a better understanding of $\mathfrak z(\hat {\mathfrak g})$.

In this paper we study Zimmer's conjecture for $C^{1}$ actions of lattice subgroup of a higher-rank simple Lie group with finite center on compact manifolds. We show that when the rank of an uniform lattice is larger than the dimension of the manifold, then the action factors through a finite group. For lattices in ${\rm SL}(n, {{\mathbb {R}}})$, the dimensional bound is sharp.

Let $C$ be a smooth curve over a finite field of characteristic $p$ and let $M$ be an overconvergent $\mathbf {F}$-isocrystal over $C$. After replacing $C$ with a dense open subset, $M$ obtains a slope filtration. This is a purely $p$-adic phenomenon; there is no counterpart in the theory of lisse $\ell$-adic sheaves. The graded pieces of this slope filtration correspond to lisse $p$-adic sheaves, which we call geometric. Geometric lisse $p$-adic sheaves are mysterious, as there is no $\ell$-adic analogue. In this article, we study the monodromy of geometric lisse $p$-adic sheaves with rank one. More precisely, we prove exponential bounds on their ramification breaks. When the generic slopes of $M$ are integers, we show that the local ramification breaks satisfy a certain type of periodicity. The crux of the proof is the theory of $\mathbf {F}$-isocrystals with log-decay. We prove a monodromy theorem for these $\mathbf {F}$-isocrystals, as well as a theorem relating the slopes of $M$ to the rate of log-decay of the slope filtration. As a consequence of these methods, we provide a new proof of the Drinfeld–Kedlaya theorem for irreducible $\mathbf {F}$-isocrystals on curves.

In earlier work, the first named author generalized the construction of Darmon-style $\mathcal {L}$-invariants to cuspidal automorphic representations of semisimple groups of higher rank, which are cohomological with respect to the trivial coefficient system and Steinberg at a fixed prime. In this paper, assuming that the Archimedean component of the group has discrete series we show that these automorphic $\mathcal {L}$-invariants can be computed in terms of derivatives of Hecke eigenvalues in $p$-adic families. Our proof is novel even in the case of modular forms, which was established by Bertolini, Darmon and Iovita. The main new technical ingredient is the Koszul resolution of locally analytic principal series representations by Kohlhaase and Schraen. As an application of our results we settle a conjecture of Spieß: we show that automorphic $\mathcal {L}$-invariants of Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight $2$ are independent of the sign character used to define them. Moreover, we show that they are invariant under Jacquet–Langlands transfer and, in fact, equal to the Fontaine–Mazur $\mathcal {L}$-invariant of the associated Galois representation. Under mild assumptions, we also prove the equality of automorphic and Fontaine–Mazur $\mathcal {L}$-invariants for representations of definite unitary groups of arbitrary rank. Finally, we study the case of Bianchi modular forms to show how our methods, given precise results on eigenvarieties, can also work in the absence of discrete series representations.

We prove a generic smoothness result in rigid analytic geometry over a characteristic zero non-archimedean field. The proof relies on a novel notion of generic points in rigid analytic geometry which are well adapted to ‘spreading out’ arguments, in analogy with the use of generic points in scheme theory. As an application, we develop a six-functor formalism for Zariski-constructible étale sheaves on characteristic zero rigid spaces. Among other things, this implies that characteristic zero rigid spaces support a well-behaved theory of perverse sheaves.

We show that the completed Hecke algebra of $p$-adic modular forms is isomorphic to the completed Hecke algebra of continuous $p$-adic automorphic forms for the units of the quaternion algebra ramified at $p$ and $\infty$. This gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Serre in a 1987 letter to Tate. The proof is geometric, and lifts a mod $p$ argument due to Serre: we evaluate modular forms by identifying a quaternionic double-coset with a fiber of the Hodge–Tate period map, and extend functions off of the double-coset using fake Hasse invariants. In particular, this gives a new proof, independent of the classical Jacquet–Langlands correspondence, that Galois representations can be attached to classical and $p$-adic quaternionic eigenforms.

For a not-necessarily commutative ring $R$ we define an abelian group $W(R;M)$ of Witt vectors with coefficients in an $R$-bimodule $M$. These groups generalize the usual big Witt vectors of commutative rings and we prove that they have analogous formal properties and structure. One main result is that $W(R) := W(R;R)$ is Morita invariant in $R$. For an $R$-linear endomorphism $f$ of a finitely generated projective $R$-module we define a characteristic element $\chi _f \in W(R)$. This element is a non-commutative analogue of the classical characteristic polynomial and we show that it has similar properties. The assignment $f \mapsto \chi _f$ induces an isomorphism between a suitable completion of cyclic $K$-theory $K_0^{\mathrm {cyc}}(R)$ and $W(R)$.

We formulate a version of the integral Hodge conjecture for categories, prove the conjecture for two-dimensional Calabi–Yau categories which are suitably deformation equivalent to the derived category of a K3 or abelian surface, and use this to deduce cases of the usual integral Hodge conjecture for varieties. Along the way, we prove a version of the variational integral Hodge conjecture for families of two-dimensional Calabi–Yau categories, as well as a general smoothness result for relative moduli spaces of objects in such families. Our machinery also has applications to the structure of intermediate Jacobians, such as a criterion in terms of derived categories for when they split as a sum of Jacobians of curves.

For oriented $-1$-shifted symplectic derived Artin stacks, Ben-Bassat, Brav, Bussi and Joyce introduced certain perverse sheaves on them which can be regarded as sheaf-theoretic categorifications of the Donaldson–Thomas invariants. In this paper, we prove that the hypercohomology of the above perverse sheaf on the $-1$-shifted cotangent stack over a quasi-smooth derived Artin stack is isomorphic to the Borel–Moore homology of the base stack up to a certain shift of degree. This is a global version of the dimensional reduction theorem due to Davison. We give two applications of our main theorem. Firstly, we apply it to the study of the cohomological Donaldson–Thomas invariants for local surfaces. Secondly, regarding our main theorem as a version of the Thom isomorphism theorem for dual obstruction cones, we propose a sheaf-theoretic construction of the virtual fundamental classes for quasi-smooth derived Artin stacks.

Let $Q$ be an acyclic quiver and $w \geqslant 1$ be an integer. Let $\mathsf {C}_{-w}({\mathbf {k}} Q)$ be the $(-w)$-cluster category of ${\mathbf {k}} Q$. We show that there is a bijection between simple-minded collections in $\mathsf {D}^b({\mathbf {k}} Q)$ lying in a fundamental domain of $\mathsf {C}_{-w}({\mathbf {k}} Q)$ and $w$-simple-minded systems in $\mathsf {C}_{-w}({\mathbf {k}} Q)$. This generalises the same result of Iyama–Jin in the case that $Q$ is Dynkin. A key step in our proof is the observation that the heart $\mathsf {H}$ of a bounded t-structure in a Hom-finite, Krull–Schmidt, ${\mathbf {k}}$-linear saturated triangulated category $\mathsf {D}$ is functorially finite in $\mathsf {D}$ if and only if $\mathsf {H}$ has enough injectives and enough projectives. We then establish a bijection between $w$-simple-minded systems in $\mathsf {C}_{-w}({\mathbf {k}} Q)$ and positive $w$-noncrossing partitions of the corresponding Weyl group $W_Q$.

We prove a formula, which, given a principally polarized abelian variety $(A,\lambda )$ over the field of algebraic numbers, relates the stable Faltings height of $A$ with the Néron–Tate height of a symmetric theta divisor on $A$. Our formula completes earlier results due to Bost, Hindry, Autissier and Wagener. The local non-archimedean terms in our formula can be expressed as the tropical moments of the tropicalizations of $(A,\lambda )$.

Let $f\colon Y \to X$ be a proper flat morphism of locally noetherian schemes. Then the locus in $X$ over which $f$ is smooth is stable under generization. We prove that, under suitable assumptions on the formal fibers of $X$, the same property holds for other local properties of morphisms, even if $f$ is only closed and flat. Our proof of this statement reduces to a purely local question known as Grothendieck's localization problem. To answer Grothendieck's problem, we provide a general framework that gives a uniform treatment of previously known cases of this problem, and also solves this problem in new cases, namely for weak normality, seminormality, $F$-rationality, and the ‘Cohen–Macaulay and $F$-injective’ property. For the weak normality statement, we prove that weak normality always lifts from Cartier divisors. We also solve Grothendieck's localization problem for terminal, canonical, and rational singularities in equal characteristic zero.

Let $U_q'({\mathfrak {g}})$ be a quantum affine algebra with an indeterminate $q$, and let $\mathscr {C}_{\mathfrak {g}}$ be the category of finite-dimensional integrable $U_q'({\mathfrak {g}})$-modules. We write $\mathscr {C}_{\mathfrak {g}}^0$ for the monoidal subcategory of $\mathscr {C}_{\mathfrak {g}}$ introduced by Hernandez and Leclerc. In this paper, we associate a simply laced finite-type root system to each quantum affine algebra $U_q'({\mathfrak {g}})$ in a natural way and show that the block decompositions of $\mathscr {C}_{\mathfrak {g}}$ and $\mathscr {C}_{\mathfrak {g}}^0$ are parameterized by the lattices associated with the root system. We first define a certain abelian group $\mathcal {W}$ (respectively $\mathcal {W} _0$) arising from simple modules of $\mathscr {C}_{\mathfrak {g}}$ (respectively $\mathscr {C}_{\mathfrak {g}}^0$) by using the invariant $\Lambda ^\infty$ introduced in previous work by the authors. The groups $\mathcal {W}$ and $\mathcal {W} _0$ have subsets $\Delta$ and $\Delta _0$ determined by the fundamental representations in $\mathscr {C}_{\mathfrak {g}}$ and $\mathscr {C}_{\mathfrak {g}}^0$, respectively. We prove that the pair $( \mathbb {R} \otimes _\mathbb {\mspace {1mu}Z\mspace {1mu}} \mathcal {W} _0, \Delta _0)$ is an irreducible simply laced root system of finite type and that the pair $( \mathbb {R} \otimes _\mathbb {\mspace {1mu}Z\mspace {1mu}} \mathcal {W} , \Delta )$ is isomorphic to the direct sum of infinite copies of $( \mathbb {R} \otimes _\mathbb {\mspace {1mu}Z\mspace {1mu}} \mathcal {W} _0, \Delta _0)$ as a root system.
