Altered basaltic tephra from Haleakala, Maui, are characterized using multiple techniques in order to identify the minerals formed under a variety of conditions and to understand the soil formation processes here. We collected samples that are representative of typical bulk weathered material in the crater, as well as solfataric alteration in a hydrothermal environment. For this study X-ray diffraction, electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are coupled with spectroscopic techniques including Mössbauer, visible-infrared reflectance, transmission infrared, and thermal infrared emission spectroscopies to analyze these samples. The unaltered tephra are composed of feldspar, glass, pyroxene and olivine. Observed alteration products include Fe oxides, phyllosilicates and sulfates, as well as SAED amorphous Al-Si-bearing material. These samples are potential analogs for altered volcanic material on Mars as the pedogenic influences and contact with plants and animals are minimal. Results from this study may help to determine spectral signatures of these samples that could be used for identification on Mars of the minerals observed here.

The pH, Eh, electrical conductivity (EC), and the amounts and valency of replaceable iron were measured periodically on Fe2+- and Fe3+-saturated montmorillonite and cation-exchange resin at three temperatures. Differences in the pattern of change of pH, Eh, and EC with time appear to be related more to the histories and modes of preparation of the systems than to intrinsic differences in the hydrolysis of the iron in them. Electron transfer reactions involving crystal components of the clay can cause oxidation of adsorbed Fe2+ ions; the activation energy (Ea) for oxidation on the clay's surface was 6 kcal/mole, less than a third of the activation energy reported for Fe2+ oxidation in solution. In the Fe2+-resin, where Ea = 10.7 kcal/mole, perturbed surface-water molecules may act as electron acceptors enhancing Fe2+ oxidation.

Polymerization and precipitation of the adsorbed iron is affected by the necessity to maintain electroneutrality, the ability of the iron-hydroxy ions and small polymers to move about in the voids of the ion exchanger, and the steric hindrance posed by the matrix of the ion exchanger to the formation of large polymers. In resin, little or no iron precipitates, probably due both to steric hindrance and the inability of the resin to release ionic components to maintain electroneutrality. In clays, steric hindrance is small, and Al and Mg are released from the crystal to maintain electroneutrality, thus the precipitation of iron is abundant and is controlled by the rate of release of Al and Mg from the crystal.

The method for prediction of Gibbs free energies of formation, based on the parameter ΔGO=Mz+(clay) characterizing the oxygen affinity of the cation Mz+, on the smectites, considered as hydrated clay minerals, has been used for micas and brittle micas, and yielded underestimated values. This method of prediction can be improved by a new set of parameters ΔGO=Mz+(clay), characterizing the electronegativity of a cation in a specific site (interlayer, octahedral, tetrahedral in the 10 Å minerals), determined by minimizing the difference between experimental Gibbs free energies and calculated Gibbs free energies of formation from constituent oxides. By considering the crystal structure of 10 Å and 14 Å minerals, and assuming the same electronegativity of cations, ΔGO=Mz+(o), in the octahedral sheets, an attempt is made to determine the electronegativity of cations in the brucitic sheet, ΔGO=Mz+(b). The results indicate that this prediction method compared to other determinations, gives values within 0.25% of the experimentally-estim ated values. The relationships between ΔGO=Mz+(clay) corresponding to the electronegativity of a cation in the interlayer, octahedral, tetrahedral or brucitic sites and known ΔGO=Mz+(aq) were thus determined, allowing the determination of the electronegativity of transition metal ions and trivalent ions in each of the four sites and consequently contribute to the prediction of Gibbs free energies of formation of different micas and chlorites. Examples are given for low-Fe clinochlore whose solubility is measured experimentally and the results appear excellent when compared with experimental values.

Ammonium-saponite is hydrothermally grown at temperatures below 300°C from a gel with an overall composition corresponding to (NH4)0.6Mg3Si3.4Al0.6O10(OH)2. The synthetic saponite and coexisting fluid have been characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, Induced Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, CEC determination using an ammonia selective electrode, and pH measurement. In the crystallization model developed, crystallization started with the growth of individual tetrahedral layers with an aluminum substitution not controlled by the A1IV/A1VI ratio in the gel and hydrothermal fluid, on which the octahedral Mg layers can grow. During the synthesis, individual sheets stacked to form thicker flakes while lateral growth also took place. The remaining A1VI partly replaced ammonium as the interlayer cation.

A synergistic effect of reductant and complexant is observed in the dissolution of goethite by dithionite and citrate or EDTA. The rate data are interpreted using the surface complexation approach to describe the interface of the reacting oxide. Adsorption of both S2O42− (D) and complexant (L) generates three surface complexes that define the dissolution behavior: ≡ Fe-D, ≡ Fe-L, and dimeric surface complexes. The initial rate increases at lower pH values because of increased surface complexation conditional formation constants. At pH values below 4, however, the fast decomposition of S2O42− gives rise to a rapid depletion of reductant, and total dissolution is not observed. It is shown that for best analytical results in soil analysis, EDTA is a better complexant than citrate; the iron extracted in one dithionite-EDTA treatment at pH 5–6, under N2 at 315 K is not increased by increasing the number of extractions, and is equivalent to the total extractable iron found by previous procedures.

Two mutually exclusive views exist concerning the relative stabilities of gibbsite and boehmite in soils. These are examined in terms of experimental and thermodynamic evidence and it is shown that all three possible divariant assemblages of two phases that can exist between gibbsite, beohmite and H2O, may do so at 25°C and 1 atmosphere total pressure depending on the status of H2O. It is further shown that the conditions of H2O chemical potential needed to stabilize boehmite + H2O relative to gibbsite + H2O or gibbsite + boehmite, are unlikely to occur in natural waters in the zone of weathering.

High-resolution solid-state, fluorine-19, magic-angle spinning-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MAS-NMR) was used to study natural and synthetic fluorinated 2:1 layer silicates of known composition. This technique enabled us to determine directly the coordination of structural fluorine and it was found to be sensitive to both the chemical nature of the octahedral elements (Al, Mg, Li) and the type of octahedral sheet (di- or trioctahedral). The observed chemical shifts at −132, −152, −176 and −182 ppm (relative to CFC13) were assigned to different environments of fluorine. The results were then used to characterize synthetic 2:1 layer silicates with unknown octahedral composition.

The hydroxyl orientations in 31 dioctahedral and trioctahedral 2:1 phyllosilicate structures have been determined by electrostatic energy calculations. These structures included micas, brittle micas, and other related minerals exhibiting ordered as well as disordered cation distributions. The dioctahedral micas and brittle micas were examined with and without the interlayer cation. A range of orientations from 1.3° to 183.3° (the angle ρ between the O-H and (001) measured with respect to the M1 site) were found. The orientations for the dioctahedral structures represent a continuum of values whereas the trioctahedral species exhibit two possible orientations separated by an energy barrier. One orientation is near 90° the other is near 180°. The latter orientation results from a concentration of charge on the interlayer (IC) and tetrahedral (T) sites at the expense of the octahedral (M) sites. A multiple regression analysis of all 31 structures, using as predictors the a and b cell parameters, d001, and the charges for T, IC, M1, and M2 sites, was performed. This analysis indicated that the important factors are the charges for IC, T, and M2 sites. When treated as a separate group, one finds the same factors for the dioctahedral structures. The trioctahedral orientations are determined by the charge on the M2 site and the amount of tetrahedral rotation. Using these two predictor equations, the value of ρ can be estimated with a standard deviation of 4.7° and 2.9° for the dioctahedral and trioctahedral cases, respectively.

Calcium hydroxide was allowed to react with various clays, other silicates, and quartz at slightly elevated temperatures for several months. The reaction products were examined by X-ray diffraction, DTA, and electron microscopy, and were shown to be poorly-crystallized calcium silicate hydrates of the tobermorite family, and calcium aluminate hydrates. Quaternary phases were not detected, but some isomorphous substitution probably occurred. The extent of reaction was shown to be such that under appropriate conditions almost all of the clay mineral was decomposed. Electron micrographs of the reacted materials indicated that attack occurred from the edges of the particles, and in general the remaining unattacked portion of the clay did not suffer appreciable loss of crystallinity. It was postulated that the reaction involved progressive dissolution of the mineral at the edges of the particles in the strongly basic environment maintained by calcium hydroxide solution, followed by separate precipation of the reaction products.

In these experiments the calcium silicate hydrate generated by the reaction between lime and quartz was uniformly calcium silicate hydrate gel (CSH (gel)); reaction with kaolinite and montmorillonite produced either CSH (gel) or calcium silicate hydrate (I) (CSH (I)) depending on the conditions of the reaction. At 60°C the alumina-bearing phase was tricalcium aluminate hexahydrate; at lower temperature the phase produced was a hexagonal material closely resembling 4CaO.Al2O3.13H2O (C4AH13) but retaining a constant 7.6Å basal spacing regardless of its state of wetness or dryness.

It was found that under appropriate conditions the formation of CSH(I) resulted in as effective a cementation as did the formation of CSH (gel).

Adsorption of Ni(II) by Ca- and Na-saturated kaolinites was studied in equilibrating solutions with total Ni concentrations ranging from 118 to 946 μg/liter. Background electrolytes used in these experiments were 0.005,0.01,0.025, and 0.5 M Ca(N03)2,0.002 and 0.005 M CaSO4, 0.01 and 0.1 M NaNO3, and 0.005 and 0.05 M Na2SO4, Ion speciation in equilibrium solutions was calculated by the computer program GEOCHEM. Computed Ni2+ concentrations and activities at equilibrium were correlated with total Ni adsorbed by kaolinite. Increasing ionic strength resulted in decreasing Ni adsorption. Adsorption of Ni was greater from solutions when NO3 was the dominant anion. Based on adsorption data in SO4 medium, the standard free energy of adsorption of Ni2+ ion on kaolinite was computed to be —27 kJ/mole.

The dispersion of clays is of great importance in determining various soil properties such as hydraulic conductivity. A procedure which involves fixing followed by embedding of clay particles in an epoxy resin is described. This procedure enables the observation of cross sections of clay tactoids under a transmittance electron microscope, and the determination of the number of plates per tactoid. The use of the procedure for the determination of the relation between the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) and tactoid size in suspensions of a Na/Ca bentonite system is presented. It was demonstrated that even at ESP 5 significant dispersion already occurs, the average number of plates per tactoid being 6.6 as compared to 16.1 at ESP 0.

The Si/Al ratio of an hydrothermal system plays an important role in kaolinite synthesis. If the atomic Si/Al ratio of a system is greater than 2-0, kaolinite will disappear at 345 + 5°C and 2 kbars water pressure according to the reaction kaolinite + 2 quartz → pyrophyllite + H2O. If the atomic Si/Al ratio is less than 2-0, however, kaolinite will persist until 405°C where it will react according to the equation 2 kaolinite → pyrophyllite + 2 boehmite + 2 H2O. The Si/Al ratio of the system and temperature are also factors in determining whether b-axis ordered or disordered kaolinite will crystallize. The ordered variety is favored by a lower Si/Al ratio and a higher temperature than is the disordered form.

Hydrothermal experiments also show that kaolinite can be synthesized at 150°C and 5 bars pressure in distilled water from amorphous starting materials. Previous investigators were unsuccessful in forming kaolinite under these conditions because their systems were contaminated with alkalis.

Attempts to synthesize halloysite and dickite failed, but halloysite was converted to kaolinite at 150°C, suggesting that halloysite can be synthesized only at low temperatures.

The osmotic swelling of an n-butylammonium vermiculite in a 0.1 M solution of n-butylammonium chloride has been studied as a function of temperature and hydrostatic pressure by neutron diffraction. On application of a pressure of 1050 bar the vermiculite swelled macroscopically at 20°C, the c-axis spacing changing from 19.4 to 126 Å. The phase transition was completely reversible with respect to both pressure and temperature, and a complete study of the temperature-pressure phase diagram was made at pressures as high as 2000 bar. The heat capacity change with temperature across the swelling transition was measured at atmospheric pressure, and the enthalpy and entropy of the change from crystalline to osmotic phases were found to be, respectively, 5.2 J/g and 0.0183 J/K·g of dry clay. The combination of the entropy change with the gradient of the pressure-temperature phase boundary gave the volume change accompanying the transition. The total volume of the swollen phase was less than that of the crystalline phase plus the appropriate amount of solution, corresponding to a fractional decrease of about 0.1% in the water volume from bulk solution to between the plates.

The adsorption of CO2 at low temperature (~ -70°C) on thin films of homoionic smectites was studied by X-ray diffraction and by i.r. absorption. An increase in the d001 spacings of these clay films upon adsorption of CO2 was observed. In addition, a dichroic effect was readily discernible by comparing the i.r. spectra at two different orientations of the smectite films; i.e. with the film normal and tilted 35° with respect to the i.r. beam. The CO2 stretching vibration at 2350 cm-1 was used for the i.r. study. These observations conclusively show that CO2 intercalates the smectite structure rather than being adsorbed only in pores between clay tactoids—the limiting process proposed by other investigators.

Adsorption isotherm data from earlier surface area studies are re-examined here through application of the Dubinin equation. Again, intercalation is demonstrated by convergence of the plotted experimental data for smectites containing large monovalent interlayer cations toward a pore volume that is near the calculated theoretical value for a monolayer of intercalated CO2.

Scanning electron photomicrographs of Li- and Cs- smectites provide additional evidence that aggregation differences are not responsible for the large observed difference in BET surface areas obtained for these smectites with CO2 as the adsorbate. At low magnification, visual differences in macro-aggregates are apparent, but at high magnification no significant differences are observed in the micro-structure of individual aggregates where the major amount of gas adsorption really occurs.

The ultrasound technique was applied to the synthesis of layered double hydroxides. The use of ultrasound in the synthesis of these compounds was studied in terms of its effect on their crystal qualities and surface properties. The crystal qualities of the compounds synthesized with ultrasound were compared with those of compounds synthesized without ultrasound to elucidate the effect of the ultrasound on the synthesis. The effect of crystal quality (crystallite size) on the adsorption behavior of humic substances was examined. The compounds synthesized under ultrasonic conditions showed a larger crystallite size and a larger adsorption capacity for humic substances than those synthesized without ultrasonic treatment. The degree of adsorption correlated well with crystal quality.

Antibacterial clays in nature include a variety of clay mineral assemblages that are capable of killing certain human pathogens. Although clays have been used for medicinal applications historically, only in the last decade have analytical methods and instrumentation been developed that allow researchers to evaluate the antibacterial mechanisms of various clays applied medicinally. Comparisons of the mineralogical and chemical compositions of natural clays that kill bacteria have promoted a better understanding of the mineral properties that are toxic to a broad-spectrum of human pathogens, including bacteria that have developed resistance to antibiotics. Popular literature is filled with reports of ‘healing’ clays, that, when tested against pathogens in vitro and compared to controls, do not appear to have bactericidal properties. It is important, however, to differentiate what properties make a clay ‘healing,’ versus what makes a clay ‘antibacterial.’ Most antibacterial clays identified to date buffer pH conditions of a hydrated clay outside the range of conditions in which human pathogens thrive (circum-neutral pH) and require oxidation reactions to occur. It is the change in oxidation state and pH imposed by the hydrated clay, applied topically, that leads to a chemical attack of the bacteria. Healing clays, on the other hand, may not kill bacteria but have soothing effects that are palliative. This article reviews some of the historical uses of clays in medicine but focuses primarily on the common characteristics of natural antibacterial clays and early studies of their antibacterial mechanisms. In this era of bacterial resistance to antibiotics, mimicking the antibacterial mechanisms exhibited by natural clays could be advantageous in the development of new antimicrobial agents.

Synthetic aluminous hematites and goethites have been examined by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. For aluminous hematites prepared at 950°C a linear relationship exists between Al content and the location of the band near 470 cm−1, up to 10 mole % Al substitution which is shown to be the solubility limit. The spectra of aluminous goethites prepared in two different ways are qualitatively similar to each other, but differ as to the relationship between the position of the band near 900 cm−1 and the Al content. The spectra of the two series of hematites produced by calcining the goethites at 590°C also show a strong dependence of band position and intensity on the goethite preparative method.

Layer charge and cation-exchange characteristics of weathered biotite isolated from a Gray Luvisol in Saskatchewan showed that this product was a high-charge vermiculite. Cation-exchange capacity (CEC) of the sand-size (100–250 μm) weathered biotite particles from different horizons, as determined by a 30-min Ca/Mg exchange, was low (23–71 meq/100 g). Increasing the exchange period to 24 hr increased the CEC to 33–95 meq/100 g for samples from the solum horizons and to 155–163 meq/100 g for samples from C horizons. The free oxide coatings on the mineral particles in the solum horizon samples apparently prevented the exchange cations from entering the interlayers. Removal of free oxides followed by 24-hr exchange sharply increased the CEC of these samples to 105–155 meq/100 g. Oxidation and loss of structural iron resulted in lower octahedral-cation occupancy (2.4–2.6 per half unit cell), suggesting a transition of the trioctahedral biotite to dioctahedral vermiculite. X-ray powder diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopic analyses of alkylammonium-exchanged samples from the sand fractions of all horizons and magnetic separates of the coarse clays showed a linear increase in the d-value of the vermiculite with increasing chain length of the cations. The linear relationships suggest a paraffin-type arrangement having a uniform and high layer charge (0.70–0.76 per half unit cell in the sand-size particles; 0.80–0.84 in the clay fraction). The empirical relationship between tilt angle (α) and the layer charge density for paraffin-type structures, as suggested by Lagaly and Weiss, cannot be used for accurate layer-charge determination. Based on experimental evidence, a straight line relationship between the tilt angle and layer charge is suggested. The layer charge values show no marked variation within the profile and agree well with those calculated from the chemical composition. The repotassified layers of vermiculite in the sand-size weathered biotite particles did not respond to the Ca/Mg exchange, but were expanded by the alkylammonium cations; in contrast, a pure biotite standard (Bancroft, Ontario) of same particle size was unaffected by either treatment.

The use of porous filters is indispensable in laboratory- and field-scale diffusion studies, where sample confinement is needed for mechanical reasons. Examples are diffusion studies with compacted swelling clays or brittle clay stones. Knowledge of the diffusion properties of these filters is important in cases where they contribute significantly to the overall diffusive resistance in the experimental setup. In the present study, measurements of effective diffusion coefficients (Db) in porous, stainless steel filter discs are reported for tritiated H2O (HTO), 22Na+, Cs+, and Sr2+ before and after use of the filters in diffusion experiments with different clay minerals. The Db values for used filters were found to be less than those of the as-received filters by ∼30–50%. The Db values measured for the diffusion of HTO, 22Na+, Cs+, and Sr2+ in unused and used stainless steel filter discs correlated fairly well with the respective molecular diffusion coefficients in bulk water. Although such correlations are inherently associated with some uncertainties, they allow reasonable estimates to be made for diffusants for which no Db values are available. For the first time, a procedure is outlined that allows an integrative assessment to be made for the impact of the uncertainties in the filter diffusion properties on the combined standard uncertainties of the diffusion parameters obtained from through-diffusion experiments. This procedure can be used in the design and optimization of through-diffusion experiments in which the diffusive resistance of the porous filters must not be ignored. Shown here, as a general rule of thumb, is that, if the effective diffusion coefficient in the porous filter is at least three times larger than that in the clay, the choice of geometrical boundary conditions is rather uncritical, as long as the thickness of the clay sample is greater than that of the porous filters.

The modification of the external surface area and the two types of microporosity of palygorskite (structural and interfiber porosity) were examined as a function of the temperature of a vacuum thermal treatment to 500°C. The methods used included: controlled-transformation-rate thermal analysis, N2 and Ar low-temperature adsorption microcalorimetry, conventional and continuous gas-adsorption volumetry (for N2 and Ar) at 77 K and CO2 at 273 and 293 K, water vapor adsorption gravimetry, and immersion microcalorimetry in water. At temperatures < 100°C only 18% of the structural microporosity was available to N2, 13% to Ar, and 100% to CO2 at 273 K. In both experiments the channels filled at very low relative pressures. At temperatures between 70° and 130°C the structure folded, and the mineral transformed to anhydrous palygorskite, which showed no structural microporosity. The interfiber microporosity was found to be independent of the temperature treatment, and the external surface area decreased slightly from 65 to 54 m2/g. The water adsorption isotherms showed that the folding of the structure was reversible up to final outgassing temperatures >225°C.
