The “Formation Rouge” from the Jbel Rhassoul in Morocco is composed of detrital sediments which have a lacustrine origin. The clays contained in the less than 2 µm fraction of the sediments are detrital phengites and illites, illite/smectites or smectites, and palygorskite. Due to the presence of well preserved long fibers, the palygorskite could not have been transported. They are authigenic and must have formed directly by precipitation from solutions rich in Mg and Al. The detrital illites are impoverished in K and tetrahedral Al. The illite/smectites or smectites, on the contrary, are K-rich but have a low tetrahedral charge. They are also richer in Mg and Fe and have a different crystal size, composition, and crystallinity from the illites. They most probably formed by crystallization, similar to the palygorskites, directly from the solution. The Al could have been provided by the detrital illite, which may have been unstable in an alkaline environment and released K and Al to the solutions.

Complexes formed by macroscopic vermiculite crystals and n-alkylammonium ions with alkyl chains of 3‐4 carbon atoms swell unidimensionally in water until the silicate layers are several hundred Ångströms apart.

The initiation of swelling is thought to involve the development of “icebergs” of the Frank-Evans type around the alkylammonium ions. Hydration of the oxygen surfaces of the silicate layers may also be a significant factor in the swelling process.

Cataphoresis experiments on finely dispersed aqueous suspensions indicate the presence of diffuse double layers of positive ions around negatively charged silicate particles. Further swelling on applying an electric field to individual swollen crystals immersed in water and dilute solutions also has been observed.

X-Ray powder diffraction and thin section analyses indicate that marginal lacustrine mudstones of the Green River Formation in the south-central Uinta basin, Utah, contain abundant analcime. The analcime has a low Si/Al ratio (<2.31) and occurs as very fine grained disseminated crystals and, to a lesser extent, as coarser-grained pore-filling cement. Analcime-rich mudstones and associated sandstones, siltstones, and carbonates lack volcanic detritus and zeolites other than analcime, thus making it difficult to support the concept that the analcime formed from precursor zeolites derived from volcanic glass altered in saline, alkaline-lake water. Abundant dolomite, syneresis cracks, and the absence of freshwater pelecypods and gastropods suggest that the lake (Lake Uinta) was moderately saline and alkaline. The restricted illite-illite/smectite clay mineral suite in the analcime-rich mudstones suggests that detrital clays significantly altered in a moderately saline and alkaline environment, thereby providing a source of Si and Al for the formation of analcime.

Red mudstones contain twice as much analcime as green mudstones (14 vs. 7 wt. %). Green mudstones have a day mineral suite consisting of illite (44 wt. %), mixed-layer illite/smectite (35 wt. %), smectite (12 wt. %), and minor kaolinite (4 wt. %) and chlorite (5 wt. %), whereas red mudstones have a more restricted day mineral suite consisting ofillite (68 wt. %) and mixed-layer illite/smectite (26 wt. %) with very minor smectite, chlorite, and kaolinite. Periodic minor fluctuations in lake level probably exposed large areas of shallow lacustrine-interdistributary green mud. Evaporative pumping on the exposed mudflats concentrated the moderately saline and alkaline-lake water, thereby producing Na-rich brines that enhanced the formation of analcime by accelerating the alteration of detrital clays and, perhaps, other minerals. Oxidation of iron from altered iron-bearing minerals stained the analcime-rich mud red with iron hydroxide or oxide (perhaps hematite). The overall reaction from green to red mud (mudstones) was probably: detrital phyllosilicates + Na-brine + iron-bearing minerals + oxygen → analcime + iron hydroxide or iron oxide.

The thermal maturity of samples of the Posidonia Shale collected from the Hils Syncline, northern Germany, varies significantly as a function of location indicating variations in local history. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction was used to document the composition and the preferred orientation of four samples of the Posidonia Shale with different degrees of maturity (0.68–1.45%, Ro) to determine possible effects on diagenesis and preferred orientation. Overall, the degree of preferred orientation of all clay minerals (illite-smectite, illite-mica, and kaolinite) and in all samples is similar, with (001) pole figure maxima ranging from 3.7 to 6.3 multiples of a random distribution (m.r.d.). Calcite displays weak preferred orientation, with c axes perpendicular to the bedding plane (1.1–1.3 m.r.d.). Other constituent phases such as quartz, feldspars, and pyrite have a random orientation distribution. The difference in thermal history, which causes significant changes in the maturity of organic matter, influenced the preferred orientation of clay minerals only marginally as most of the alignment seems to have evolved early in their history. Synchrotron X-ray microtomography was used to characterize the three-dimensional microstructure of a high-maturity sample. Low-density features, including porosity, fractures, and kerogen, were observed to be elongated and aligned roughly parallel to the bedding plane. The volume of low-density features was estimated to be ~7 vol.%, consistent with previous petrophysical measurements of porosity of 8–10 vol.%. Transmission electron microscopy analysis of samples with different degrees of maturity (0.74%Ro and 1.45%Ro) was used to document microstructures at the nanoscale as well as the presence of kerogen. In the high-maturity sample, pores were less abundant while minerals were more deformed as shown by fractured calcite and by kinked and folded illite. Some of the porosity was aligned with clay platelets.

The Fe3+ substituted for Al3+ at the 2 octahedral positions is one of the most common impurities in the kaolinite structure detected by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Evidence has been provided for a relationship between the shape of EPR spectra for structural Fe and the structural disorder in kaolinite. It is proposed that the structural Fe be used as a sensitive probe for the degree of disorder of natural kaolinites. With this aim in view, an EPR disorder index (E) is defined from the width of selected EPR lines. Using reference kaolinites, it is shown that this index can account as well for long-range disorder detected by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) as for local perturbations such as radiation-induced defects (RID). It is shown that the disorder observed through EPR has some points in common with the XRD-measured one. The influence on E of the presence of RID is shown by the study of artificially and naturally irradiated kaolinites.

Vesicular and groundmass phyllosilicates in a hydrothermally altered basalt from the Point Sal ophiolite, California, have been studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Pore-filling phyllosilicates are texturally characterized as having coherent, relatively thick and defect-free crystals of chlorite (14 Å) with occasional 24-Å periodicities. Groundmass phyllosilicates are texturally characterized as 1) randomly oriented crystals up to 200 Å in width and 2) larger, more coherent crystals up to 1000 Å in width. Small crystallites contain predominantly 14-Å layers with some 24-Å units. Large crystals show randomly interlayered chlorite/smectite (C/S), with approximately 50% chlorite on average. Adjacent smectite-like layers are not uncommon in the groundmass phyllosilicates. Electron microprobe analyses show that Fe/Mg ratios of both groundmass and vesicular phyllosilicates are fairly constant.

Termination of brucite-like interlayers has been identified in some of the TEM images. The transformation mechanisms represented by these layer terminations are 1) growth of a brucite-like interlayer within smectite interlayer regions and 2) the dissolution and reprecipitation of elements to form chlorite layers. Both mechanisms require an increase in volume as smectite transforms to chlorite.

The data, combined with that from previously published reports, suggest that randomly interlayered C/S is a metastable phase formed in microenvironments with low water/rock ratios. Chlorite forms in microenvironments in the same sample dominated by higher water/rock ratios. The relatively constant number of Mg's in the structure (Mg#) of both structures indicates that in both microenvironments the bulk rock composition has influence over the composition of phyllosilicates.

The idealized symmetry of kaolinite-type minerals (1:1 phyllosilicates) is analysed in detail. They can be considered as OD-structures consisting of three kinds of OD-layers. Each of them, taken separately, possesses higher symmetry than their combination. This explains the well-known tendency of kaolinite-type minerals to form a wide variety of ordered and disordered polytypes as well as twins. The possible stacking sequences result from the different kinds of pairs of kaolinite layers which are derived for dioctahedral, trioctahedral as well as ‘monoctahedral’ kaolinite-type minerals, the latter being defined as those in which the three octahedral positions are occupied by three different cations or two different cations and a void. The analysis makes use of a simple symbolism and a simplified pictorial representation.

A brief summary of the most important terms and definitions of the theory of OD-structures is given in an Appendix.

The effects of ultrasound treatment on the mean particle size, crystal structure, crystallite dimensions and specific surface area of natural muscovite and biotite samples have been investigated. Sonication of macroscopic flakes of muscovite and biotite produced a drastic particle-size reduction. The conditions for the preparation of micron and submicron-sized muscovite and biotite particles of narrow particle-size distribution by sonochemistry are described. The effect of sonication on particle-size reduction is more significant for muscovite than for biotite. Thus, for long sonication times (100 h), submicron and micron particles are predominant in muscovite and biotite, respectively. The resulting materials are crystalline, as assayed by X-ray diffraction, only broadening of the diffraction lines due to size-reduction was observed. Nuclear magnetic resonance studies revealed that the coordination of Al and Si was not modified by the treatment. Chemical analysis showed that the composition of the sample was not affected by the sonication except for a small contamination by Ti from the tip cup of the sonication instrument.

When Li-saturated montmorillonite is heated to 200–300 °C, the Li ions migrate from interlayer positions to sites in the layer structure. However, the identity of these sites has not been clearly established. Here we have investigated the migration of Li ions in montmorillonite, after heat treatment at 250 °C, using chemical and instrumental analyses. The latter include X-ray diffractometry (XRD), 7Linuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Heating causes a large reduction in cation exchange capacity (CEC) and an almost complete loss of interlayer expansion with glycerol as shown by XRD. Static and magic angle spinning (MAS) 7Li-NMR spectroscopy shows that the quadrupole coupling constant of Li increases markedly over the corresponding value for unheated Li-montmorillonite (where Li occupies exchange sites in the interlayer space) and for hectorite (where Li is located in the octahedral sheet). This would indicate that, in heated montmorillonite, Li occupies structural sites of low symmetry which, however, cannot be identified with octahedral vacancies in the layer structure as is commonly assumed. XPS shows that the binding energy (BE) for Li in unheated montmorillonite is comparable to that for other exchangeable cations. Heating broadens the Li 1s band and decreases the BE. The BE for Li in heated montmorillonite is significantly higher than that in either spodumene or lepidolite, where Li is known to occupy octahedral sites. The combined data suggest that heating induces Li to migrate from interlayer sites to ditrigonal cavities in the tetrahedral sheet, rather than into vacancies in the octahedral sheet, of montmorillonite.

Trimethylammonium ions (TMA+) with formula CH3(CH2)n-1N+(CH3)3, with n = 4, 8, 12, 16, 18 and 22 were intercalated into synthetic Li-fluorotaeniolite (Li-FTN) and Li-fluorohectorite (Li-FHT) by cation exchange. The products were analyzed by thermogravimetric (TGA) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). XRD patterns exhibited variable (001) spacings of the TMA+/mica complexes depending upon the exchange ratio of TMA+/Li+ and the carbon number of TMA+. Detailed inspection of these XRD patterns clarified the structures of the complexes and also the intercalation mechanism, as follows: The fundamental structure of the complexes is the commonly known intercalation structure where the “paraffin-type bilayers” of TMA+ are in the mica interlayer and their long chains incline at approximately 30° to the silicate sheet. This structure appeared at the final stage of the intercalation reaction. During the intermediate stage of the reaction, units of this structure and those of hydrated mica formed randomly and regularly interstratified structures. Variable (001) spacings in XRD patterns showed the structural change of the complex with an increasing number of TMA+-intercalated units.

Boron adsorption on 2-0.2-μm size fractions of kaolinite at 25° ± 2°C at pH values between 6.0 and 10.5 was studied. The kaolinite sample was pretreated to remove any surface oxide and hydroxide coatings. The initial concentrations of boron in solution ranged between 2 and 10 mg/liter with either KClO4 or Ca(ClO4)2 as background electrolyte at constant ionic strength of 0.09 ± 0.01 mole/liter. Boron speciation in equilibrium solutions was calculated by using the chemical equilibrium computer program GEOCHEM. The adsorption of boron on kaolinite in either medium showed similar dependence on pH and initial boron concentrations. Boron adsorption at higher pHs was noticeably higher in Ca(ClO4)2 medium as compared to KClO4 medium. These differences were attributed to the formation and adsorption of CaB(OH4)+ ion-pair species.

The sorption of anisole and some related aromatic ethers on the interlamellar surfaces of Cu(II) hectorite has been investigated by i.r. and e.s.r. spectroscopy. In addition to physical adsorption, anisole forms two distinct types of Cu(II) complexes which are analogous to the type I and II species previously reported for benzene-Cu(II) smectite systems. These complexes can be transformed to type I and II complexes of 4,4’-dimethoxybiphenyl. Possible mechanisms are proposed for the oxidation process. Butyl phenyl ether formed a type II complex with Cu(II)-hectorite, but no dimerization reaction was noted in this system. Phenyl ether and benzyl methyl ether form a type I π complex with Cu(II)-hectorite. No type II analog was noted. E.S.R. spectra of each of the type II ether-Cu(II)-hectorite systems showed a single, narrow band with g near the value expected for a “free spinning” electron. The type I phenyl ether and benzyl methyl ether complexes also exhibited this e.s.r. band. Ag(I) hectorite adsorbs anisole by forming exclusively a type I complex. Na(I) and Co(II) hectorite adsorb anisole by physical means only, indicating association with the silicate surface.

Due to swelling, smectite minerals are capable of intercalating many organic molecules in their interlayer space. Tetracycline (TC) is a group of antibiotics used extensively in human and veterinary medicine. The great aqueous solubility and long environmental half life of TC mean that the study of interactions between swelling clay minerals and TC are of great importance in TC transport and retention in subsurface soils. In the present study, the intercalation of TC molecules at different levels into smectites was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The shift of the FTIR bands of amide I and II in comparison to crystalline TC suggested a strong interaction between the amide groups and the clay surfaces. The band at 1455 cm−1 remained the same after TC intercalation into SAz-1, SWy-2, and SYn-1, suggesting that complexation was not a dominant mechanism of TC uptake by these minerals. With cation exchange as the major mechanism of TC intercalation into these minerals, simultaneous removal of H+ from solution protonated the TC molecules and provided a positive charge to interact with negatively charged mineral surfaces even in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions. The increase in interlayer distance after intercalation by TC, as revealed by XRD, suggested a tilted orientation of the intercalated TC molecules in both twisted conformation in acidic condition and extended conformation in alkaline condition.

The crystallinity of minerals in terms of crystallite size distribution and lattice perfection is quantified by means of statistical measures derived from X-ray line profiles (2 σ values). A low degree of crystallinity facilitates the non-stoichiometric incorporation of foreign elements in the crystal lattice. Crystallinity is affected by a number of factors and in natural profiles it may vary laterally as well as vertically.

For instance, goethite in laterite deposits shows decreasing crystallinity with increasing depth. Serpentine type minerals, on the other hand, show the lowest crystallinity at the surface where the degree of weathering is the most advanced. The presence of silica in migrating solutions prevents crystal growth and results in a low degree of crystallinity of minerals such as goethite. This has been observed in natural profiles and has been confirmed by laboratory experiments on the synthesis of goethite and sodium-birnessite. The crystallinity of minerals affects their response to extractive procedures. It could also be an important parameter in soil science.

Formulas calculated from modern analyses of vermiculites and hydrobiotites show that these minerals resemble phlogopites and magnesian biotites in tetrahedral and octahedral layer composition, but usually have a higher proportion of trivalent octahedral cations. None of the formulas studied resembles those of ferroan biotites in composition.

In a few formulas the negative layer unit charge and the neutralizing positive interlayer charge are as high as those found in phlogopite; about 1.00 in the half-cell formula, but in most vermiculite formulas the charge on the layer unit and the interlayer charge are considerably lower than in phlogopite. Such a decrease in the amount of these charges may be due to oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+, which would increase the positive octahedral charge, and, consequently, decrease the layer unit charge. Oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ also explains the higher proportion of trivalent octahedral cations in vermiculites and hydrobiotites.

Few papers furnish both cation exchange data and analyses of the samples studied; consequently it is difficult to correlate interlayer charge and cation exchange capacity, but empirically the interlayer charge multiplied by 200 yields a value that approximates the cation exchange capacity, provided the Mg has been allotted correctly between octahedral and interlayer positions.

On the basis of composition and charge relations, vermiculites may be interpreted as formed from phlogopites or magnesian biotites by replacement of K by Mg.

Two orientations of white micas with subordinate chlorite have been observed in a fine-grained (50 Å to 2 μm) matrix of a Silurian lower anchizonal mudrock from central Wales: one parallel to bedding and one parallel to cleavage that is approximately 30°-50° to bedding. Bedding-parallel micas consist of small (50-200 Å thick) deformed packets (1Md polytype) and larger (100 Å-2 μm) strain-free grains (2M1 polytype). All strained micas and some strain-free grains have compositions varying from Mu86Pg14 to Mu58Pg42, intermediate to muscovite and paragonite, and falling within the Mu-Pg solvus. Individual packets of layers are chemically homogeneous and some of them give only one set of 00l reflections (d ≈ 19.6 Å). Micas with such intermediate compositions are metastable. Some packets of coarse, strain-free micas have compositions of approximately Mu93Pg7 or Mu11Pg89. Split pairs of 00l reflections with d-values of 20 Å and 19.6 Å, and 20 Å and 19.2 Å, respectively, were observed in some SAED patterns, suggesting coexistence of muscovite and intermediate Na/K mica (∼Mu60Pg40), and of discrete muscovite and paragonite, consistent with the splitting of the basal reflections of micas as observed in bulk-rock XRD patterns. Cleavage-parallel micas (2M1 and 3T polytypes) occur as strain-free large grains (200 Å to 2 μm) of discrete muscovite (Mu100Pg0) and paragonite (Mu6Pg94), often with subhedral to euhedral cross-sections.

The data suggest that bedding-parallel metastable micas with disordered interlayer K and Na were initially derived from alteration of smectite during burial diagenesis. They subsequently underwent dissolution, with crystallization of more evolved bedding-parallel micas during deep burial. Discrete grains of stable muscovite and paragonite then crystallized in the cleavage orientation through tectonic stress-induced dissolution of bedding-parallel matrix micas. Combined XRD and TEM/AEM data further show that the so-called 6:4 ordered mixed-layer paragonite/muscovite actually corresponds to cation-disordered, homogeneous mica of intermediate composition.

Hydrothermal reactions in the system sepiolite/H2O have been examined between 149° and 316°C. Approximately 10–20% of the starting sepiolite was converted to a smectite (stevensite) at 204°C within 24 hr. Similar results were obtained when CaCl2, NaOH, Ca(OH)2, or Mg(OH)2 was added to the system. In the presence of NaCl, about 60% of the sepiolite was converted to stevensite, whereas, only 5% stevensite formed in the presence of MgCl2. Greater amounts of stevensite formed at 260°C in these systems. Above 316°C, 60–80% of the sepiolite was converted to stevensite in 24 hr, regardless of the presence or absence of salts. Within the experimental conditions used, temperature is the most important factor in the sepiolite-to-stevensite conversion.

At or below 216°C, sepiolite appears to transform into stevensite by dislocations involving c12 glides that are triggered by the stresses of the hydrothermal conditions. Above this temperature, stevensite seems to form by direct precipitation after dissolution of sepiolite.

A comprehensive study of clay minerals should include determination of the vacancy pattern of the dioctahedral sheet. The purpose of this report is to consider the advantages and limitations in various diffraction and non-diffraction methods for the determination of the layer types in clay minerals. Identification of trans-vacant (tv) and cis-vacant (cv) clay minerals reported here is based on powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns calculated for different polytypes consisting of either tv or cv layers, on the simulation of experimental XRD patterns corresponding to illite or illite fundamental particles in which tv and cv layers are interstratified, and on the semi-quantitative assessment of the relative content of the layer types in the interstratified structures by generalized Méring’s rules. A simple and effective method for identification of tv and cv layers in dioctahedral 2:1 layer silicates employs thermal analysis and is based on different dehydroxylation temperatures for tv and cv illite and smectite layers.

Crystal chemical analysis of various dioctahedral 2:1 layer silicates consisting of tv and cv layers indicates that compositional control is present in the distribution of octahedral cations over trans- and cis-sites. In dioctahedral smectites the formation of tv and cv layers is related to the layer composition and local order-disorder in the distribution of isomorphous cations. Dioctahedral 1M micas with abundant Fe3+ and Mg occur only as tv varieties. In contrast, 1M-cv illite, as well as cv layers in illite fundamental particles of I-S, can form only as Fe- and Mg-poor varieties. In illites and illite fundamental particles of I-S consisting of tv and cv layers, cv layers prevail when the amounts of Al in octahedra and tetrahedra are >1.55 and >0.35 atoms per O10(OH)2, respectively.

The main factors responsible for the stability of cv and tv illites have been established. Monomineral cv 1M illite, its association with tv 1M illite, and interstratified cv/tv illite occur around ore deposits, in bentonites, and in sandstones mostly as a result of different types of hydrothermal activity. The initial material for their formation should be Al-rich, and hydrothermal fluids should be Mg- and Fe-poor.

Tv and cv smectites of volcanic origin differ in terms of octahedral cation composition and distribution of isomorphous octahedral cations. Mg-rich cv smectites have random distribution of isomorphous octahedral cations, whereas in Mg-bearing tv smectites octahedral Mg cations are dispersed so as to minimize the amount of Mg-OH-Mg arrangements.

The adsorption of metals by clay minerals is a complex process involving different mechanisms, and is controlled by different variables which can interact. The aim of this work was to study the retention mechanisms of Cd on illite. We obtained Cd adsorption isotherms at constant pH, adsorption edges as a function of pH, adsorption isotherms at 5, 25 and 45°C (pH = 7), and response surfaces of the simultaneous effect of pH, initial concentration, ionic strength, and temperature on the retention of Cd on illite. Below pH 6, adsorption of Cd on illite is via ion exchange with H3O+ and Na+ ions which saturate the exchange sites, the exchange with Na+ being the main mechanism between pH 4.5 and 6.0. For pH values >6, the effect of ionic strength on the amount of Cd2+ retained decreased with pH, being negligible at pH 8; the proton stoichiometry was greater than for pH values <6 and an increase in the temperature favored the retention of Cd. These facts are compatible with a more specific process involving hydrolyzed species, in which Cd can associate with illite as an inner sphere complex.

The Source Clays Program of The Clay Minerals Society was initiated in 1972 to distribute a set of reference clays, so that distributed clays could be identical for all recipients. Because most clays do not consist of a single phase, the immediate objective was not to produce a pure product consisting of one clay mineral, but to provide a uniform product. These materials were collected and processed carefully, and sufficient amounts were collected so that material was available for researchers for many years, Large numbers of researchers were thereby assured of working on identical material. Initial descriptions of these materials were presented in the Data Handbook (van Olphen and Fripiat, 1979). An updated version of this book was suggested several years ago because of the availability of new analytical techniques and to provide descriptions of material added to the reference set since 1979.
