It is proposed to offer a series of papers, based primarily on the material collected by Professor E. H. Strickland of the University of Alberta at Edmonton.

Chelynia nitida (Cresson). This genus of parasitic bees has over twenty species in North America, the majority from the Pacific Coast region. There are two closely allied species described from females, black with cream-coloured abdominal bands. For some years I have had in my collection a male from Tolland, Colorado, July 1915, at flowers of Frasera, collected by L. A. Kenoyer, determined by me as C. nitida (Cress). I now receive a very similar but distinct male from Professor E. H. Strickland, collected by O. Peck at Beaverlodge, Alberta, July 6, 1931. I conclude that this must be the genuine C. nitida, and the Tolland one the undescribed male of the related C. idahoensis Swenk.

During late July and August, 1935, Mr. W. J. Brown made extensive insect collections at Lake Harbour, a trading post on the southern coast of Baffin Island. The following is a report on the Braconidae taken by Mr. Brown. Specimens of this family were comparatively rare and only six species were encountered. Two of these are represented by single males and cannot be positively identified at present. The material is deposited in the Canadian National collection; duplicate paratypes of new species are deposited in the United States National Museum.

The known ants of the state of Idaho comprise about 73 named species, subspecies and varieties. They occupy a wide variety of habitats ranging from dunes of pure sand, barren and wind-blown, to forests of yellow pine, fir and spruce, with an abundance of shade and moistuce. Because of the large amount of vegetation in the montane forests and subalpine pine meadows a large percentage of the ant fauna lives there, if not exclusively at least in very great numbers. It is, however, rather surprising to observe the large number of species which nest on the dry plains of sagebrush, bromegras and rabbitbrush, and on the scattered alkaline flats of greasewood in the southern part of the state.

In view of the abundance, wide distribution, and forage value of some of the rabbit brush species in western North America and the lack of knowledge concerning the range entomology of this region, it was felt that a study of the Capitophorus aphid fauna of this plant would be desirable.

Types of the following new species of Cicadellidae are in the Snow Entomological Collection, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas.

Hebecephalus hilaris n. sp.

Resembling H. crassus (DeL.) but head more roundingly blunt, female last ventral segment with median lobes sharp instead of rounded, and male style with foot distinctly boot-shaped. Length 3.25 mm.

Color. Cinereous with fuscous markings. Vertex with typical three pairs of spots. Pronotum and scutellum more or less irrorate with brown. Veins of elytra light more or less regularly margined with brown. Venter more or less infuscated.

Preliminary study of the outbreak of the European spruce sawfly (Diprion polytomum Htg.) in the Gaspe Peninsula, undertaken in 1931 by the Division of Forest Insects, showed that the extent of the infestation was such that the sawfly could not be economically controlled by chemical or mechanical means. It was found, also, that the sawfly was not attacked by parasites.

Female.—Length 7 mm. Head thick antero-posteriorly, the temples scarcely narrowed behind, distinctly broader than eyes viewed dorsally; vertex evenly convex; ocelli small ; ocellocular space fully three times diameter of lateral ocellus; malar space scarcely half basal width of mandible; face distinctly elevated above level of eye-margins, feebly shining with well separated fine punctures, the interspaces finely reticulately sculptured; antennae 23 segmented, first flagellar segment very nearly equal to second and third combined; thorax shining; propleura polished almost without punctures ; mesoscutum with only sparse punctures bearing vestiture ; mesopleura sparsely punctate above and polished impunctate behind, anteriorly and ventrally the punctures becoming more dense toward a patch of very fine dense punctures adjacent epicneimia; metapleura with larger shallow punctures which are somewhat confused by weak rugulae below; propodeum rather elongate, shining, impunctate, dorsally finely and faintly reticulate, median parallel longitudinal carinae very weak, lateral longitudinal carina distinct only on posterior half, apical transverse carina defined laterally but scarcely visible at middle; lateral face of propodeuin a little roughened; nervulus slightly postfurcal, nervellus broken about at middle.

The types of the spcies described below are in the author's collection except for the Acanthosmioides, which are in Prof. T. D. A. Cockerell's collection.

Osmia (Acanthosmioides) uncinata n. sp.

Male: Length 10 mm.; head and thorax green, the cheeks and pleura bluer, the abdomen blue, slightly greener posteriorly, the posterior margins of the tergites concolorous; flagellum crenulate, the under side brownish red; mandibles black, their bases greenish; legs black except for the green femora and rufescent claw joints of tarsi; hind tibiae perhaps faintly greenish basally; tegulae black, green anteriorly; hind basitarsus widest apically, tapering basally; head and thorax closely punctate, but the vertex and scutum not blackish; wings hardly dusky, the basal vein meeting transverse median, the second abscissa of cubital vein nearly twice as long as fourth; scutellum with a longitudinal median line, which is not distinctly polished; pubescence of head and thorax white, that of clypeus dense and erect as in other species of this subgenus; pubescence of abdomen white, the third tergite with a few black hairs posteriorly on dorsum, tergites four to six with more abundant black hairs intermixed among the pale; venter of abdoinen with some dark hairs among the pale; apex of abdomen normal for the subgenus, the teeth of seventh tergite rounded; process of second sternite not compressed apically, but rather narrowly rounded when seen from below, the base (in same view) widened; seen from the side, the apex of the process is minutely hooked on ventral side; ventral side of process, especially basally, somewhat excavated, but not grooved.

In the Canadian Entomologist, August, 1935, the writer presented a short life-history of the mealy bug, Phenacoccus aceris Sig. Since the preparation of the above paper, further interesting observations have been recorded.

The female nymphs emerge from the winter cocoons and disseminate over the tree to feed, considerably earlier in the spring than was originally suppsed. When visiting an infested orchard near -Annapolis Royal on March 20, 1935, the writer was surprised to find that the females were already feeding in small numbers on the fruit spurs. An estimate of the emergence at this date was from 4 to 5 percent of the total infestation. A few were also observed emerging from the winter cocoons and beginning to make their way to the outer limbs. These observations were made on a clear bright day about 4 p.m. At the time, it was slightly below freezing in the shade. In the sunshine the temperature was probably a few degrees above the freezing point. There was nearly a foot of snow under the trees in the orchard.

Male. Characterized by thle broad black outer border on the upper-side of both wings, this border being frequently 2 mm. in width. The blue color on the remaining wing-area is very deep, and, although quite shiny in certain lights, is more the color of P. icnrioides, and much darker than in the other western races. On the underside the black spots are very large, and prominently white-ringed; the ground color is a deep gray-brown, rather reminiscent of the type form and darker than is usual in the Coloradan oro Scud. Fringes white.

Through the courtesy of the authorities of the American Museum of Natural History I have been enabled recently to make slides of the genitalia of a number of Pearsall's types of Eupithecia, contained in their collections, and also to examine slides of type material made by Mr. S. Cassino. The following- new synonymy is based on a careful study of this slide material and a comparison with numerous slides and figures of the genitalia of type material of other authors before me. It continues illy work on this genus contained in several papers published in the Canadian Entonlolcgist in 1929-1932.

Last September, my wife and I visited the Prince Albert National Park, particularly to see Grey Owl and Anahareo and the beavers at Ajawaan Lake. The country was entirely new to me, and I found very much of interest. Saskatchewan is divided into two very different parts. The southern half has some large lakes, but is essentially a prairie region, where vast quantities of wheat are grown. As we crossed a portion of it travelling from Calgary to Saskatoon, the landscape was monotonous and not very interesting. But the northern half of the province is in complete ccntrast. It is a land of dense forests, with innumerable lakes, large and small. These lakes are warm enough in summer to be the delight of innumerable bathers, but covered with thick ice all winter. This region is in the Canadian zone, whereas the prairie region belongs to the Transition. In the northern (especially north eastern) part of the province is a large area in the Hudsonian zone, sufficiently distinct in aspect to be easily recognised from an aeroplane, I was informed.

In 1930 Dr. R. H. Emslie turned over to the author a small collection of mayfly nymphs collected by him in streams in Scotland. Among them was a small series of nymphs of Ecdyonurus venosus Fabricius in different instars collected at Tummel Bridge and Bridge of Weir. This species is unique in having prominent postero-lateral extensions of the prothorax resembling the wing-pads of the meso- and metathorax (Figs. 1 & 8).

A recent study of the male genitalia of the Lycaenidae of North America, made while the author was attending the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo., showed several interesting points, especially within the subfamily Lycaeniuae or “Coppers.”

In a recent number of the European publication Parnassiana (Vol. 111, p. 55) I was astonished to note that under the title “A Critical Revision of the Genus Parnassius based on Material in the Eisner Collection,” Messrs. Bryk and Eisner had described a race of P. smintheus with the subspecific name manitobaensis from “End Mountains, Manitoba.”

As it appeared extremely problematic that Parnassius would turn up in Manitoba without rumours of the find reaching- Ottawa, I got in touch with several collectors in the province. From one, Mr. J. F. May of Norgate, Man. I received a reply that the specimens in question had been supplied by him but that they had been distinctly labelled “End Mountain, Alta.,” a locality I believe to be situated in the Banff region. Under these circumstances the name manitobaensis will sink into the synonymy of the typical race smintheus, as found in the Canadian Rockies.

In working over my Phyllophaga of the lanceolata-group recently, the present new species was found; although very distinct from lanceolata the following nevertheless resembles it so markedly at a casual glance that it is difficult to pick it out in a series.
