The species of flesh-fly under consideration are Wohlfahrtia vigil Wlk., Calliphora crythrocephala Mg., and Lucilia sericata Mg.

Oviposition under laboratory conditions occurred in most cases at night. Under outdoor conditions wild individuals of these species were observed to oviposit only during the day. Lack of disturbance in the cages is suggested as the deciding factor, since temperature and light were kept constant night and day.The site of oviposition preferred is the undersurface of a dry ledge of the meat. On being disturbed the ovipositing female is loth to leave the site.

Attention of the zoological profession is invited to the fact that request for the “Suspension of the Rules” has been made in the following cases, on the ground that “the strict application of the Règles will clearly result in greater confusion than uniformity.” According to procedure one year's notice is hereby published, “making it possible for zoologists, particularly specialists in the group in question, to present arguments for or against the suspension under consideration.”

The species considered below are commonly confused in collections under the name inflatus Say. They resemble one another very closely, but critical study of the material at hand has shown the value and constancy of the characters noted below. The most important characters are those of the antennae, noted in the first couplet of the following key, and of the aedeagus.

Say's grain bug, Chlorochroa sayi Stal, made its initial appearance in Alberta, in appreciable numbers, during the season of 1935. The history of the recorded damage by this insect is available in the publication by Caffrey and Barber (U. S. D. A. Bul. 779). This publication is the only adequate treatise to date on this pest of economic grains. The first recorded damage was reported by farmers from Gila and Salt River Valleys of Arizona in 1903. Further outbreaks were recorded in the southern states of New Mexico, Arizona, Texas and Colorado, reaching the peak of depredation during the period, 1915 to 1919. Its first occurrence in Montana was noted during the years 1931 and 1932. where it has been causing considerable losses to the farmers in the northern part of that state ever since. Localized outbreaks were reported in Utah during this same period.

On a visit to lake Winnibigoshish, Minnesota, on August 26, 1932, my attention was attracted by numbers of this wasp engaged in dragging the mature larvae of the Notodontid moth, Symmerista albifrons S. and A. over the sandy surface of the broad beach. The lake shore is about 300 feet wide at that place and composed of several distinct levels. The lower areas nearest the water are covered with low growths of willow and poplar, among which the wasps seemed to prefer to bury the paralysed caterpillars. The latter had developed on the oaks in the forest bordering the lake and several were seen crawling on the sand below the trees, presumably seeking places for pupation. The wasps doubtlessly seized their victims on the ground.

On Tuesday morning, July 17, 1933 I noticed a Trypoxylon politiforme Roh. starting to build its nest against the side of a vertical cement pillar in our basement, by Friday night, July 20, 1933 the first row of cells was completed.

This wasp builds a mud cell about one inch long and somewhat larger in diameter than a lead pencil. It provisions this cell with paralyzed spiders, then it closes the cell leaving about one-fourth inch of the cell projecting. It then extends the cell for another inch, and fills the second compartment or cell with paralyzed spiders, closing this second cell off with another mud partition. The first row of cells were slightly more than seven inches long, and contained seven cells. The second row of cells was started on Saturday morning, July 21, these being built along the side of the first row. I noticed two wasps bringing in mud. I dropped some white Duco paint upon one of the wasps, which later I found to be a male.

The writer is not aware that observations on the exceedingly interesting oviposition habits of Phlepsius decorus O. & B. have ever been published. A single female of this species was captured on a sunflower plant at Webster Groves, Mo., June 30, 1933. It was placed in a celluloid, cylinder cage enclosing the terminal bud and young leaves of a half-grown sunflower plant where it began feeding at once.

Head, palpi and thorax clothed with rough olive-ochreous hair, the palpi with a considerable admixture of black hairs apically. Pectus and legs with similarly colored, rough vestiture. Abdomen dorsally with sparse ochreous hairs over a black ground and with the posterior margins of segments ringed narrowly with ochreous scales ; laterally and ventrally with strong vestiture of rather bright yellow hair. Primaries deep pink with a broad, subterminal curved band of oliveochreous from below apex of wing to near base of wing above vein I, narrowing considerably at this point; a streak of the same color in the cell.

Looking at the map, I have often wondered what bees might be found in those great northern regions of Alberta and Saskatchewan, from which few collections have been seen. Professor E. H. Strickland has sent me numerous species of Andrena from the region about Edmonton and thence southwest to Lethbridge. But he has also included two species obtained in the far north, in a latitude about the same as that of the southern tip of Greenland. They are quite different from the more southern species, and so far as I can see, they have not been described. It would thus appear that there is a distinctive northern Andrena fauna, probably of few species.
