Looking back to my earliest entomological recollections, I am struck with the number of noted entomologists that came to London to visit my father. Among the earliest of these was Augustus R. Grote, a rather dapper man of perhaps forty-five years, who visited us on several occasions. Another noted visitor was C. V. Riley who had an official position at Washington.

In work on responses of insects to sound at Belleville, by Mr. G. Wishart, a mechanical device was needed to provide a means of slowly revolving a pair of directional light-traps in a horizontal plane on the circumference of a circle 20 feet in diameter. One of the traps was to be used as an experimental trap and the other as a check against the results of the first. A machine was designed, constructed, and put into operation in July, 1961.

Larvae of Hypoderma bovis (L.) and H. lineatum (De Vill.) when incubated with the substrate acetylthiocholine iodide showed the presence of cholinesterase throughout the central nervous system and sense organs, in gonads, oenocytes, Malpighian tubes, anlagen of adult structures, part of the posterior midintestine, and at the junctions of the muscles of the body wall. Incubation with the substrate 5-bromoindoxyl acetate showed all the aforementioned and in addition demonstrated the presence of aliesterase (organophosphorus-sensitive esterase) in the cell cytoplasm of all the midintestinal epithelium, the ring gland, tracheal epithelium, salivary duct epithelium, and in the perineurium of the nerve sheath. Aromesterase (organophosphorus-resistant esterase) was particularly abundant in the epithelium of the midintestine. Lipase was prominent in the lipid droplets of the fat body cells and in similar droplets in the haemocytes.

When the larvae or their tissues, prior to incubation with the substrates, were treated with any one of the three organophosphorus insecticides coumaphos (Co-Ral), trichlorfon (Neguvon, Dipterex), or Ruelene, the cholinesterase was inhibited and so was much of the aliesterase, but not the aromesterase or lipase. Fixation of the larval tissues in formalin did not result in loss of enzyme activity, but on the other hand was not necessary for good histochemical demonstration of the enzymes.

It is concluded that these insecticides by their anticholinesterase action kill the first-instar cattle grubs before the latter can migrate to the lumbar region of the bovine host.

The discussions upon the subject of nomenclature in Zoology, and especially in the department of Entomology, have recently become very perplexing to American students. Many who have been unable either by want of time or lack of opportunity, to consult old works, which are to be found in but few libraries, are called upon suddenly to decide for themselves, whether they will or will not adopt changes in the names of some of the most familiar and best known objects.

Airplane application of the insect growth regulator CGA 13353, a juvenile hormone mimic used experimentally against spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.), did not drastically reduce percentage parasitism in field samples of that host, but there was some evidence of susceptibility. Exploratory sampling of maple defoliators suggested that one species and its parasitoids suffered some mortality, but another species and its parasitoids did not. The treatment did not influence the viability of ant colonies.

Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton (Ericaceae)) requires insect pollen vectors to maximise fruit yield. In many areas, commercial producers use managed bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) to supplement native pollinators. On the island of Newfoundland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, due to the small number of available honey bee hives and import restrictions on commercially reared bumble bees, the use of supplemental pollinators is rare. Four farms were studied for two years to identify key pollinators and determine the relationship between fruit yield and bee abundance. The most commonly collected bees were species of Bombus Latreille (Hymenoptera: Apidae), which buzz-pollinate and are likely the primary pollinator on these farms; thus, fruit yield was examined with respect to total Bombus abundance. Stigma loading was also used as a measure of pollinator effectiveness. Contrary to expectation, there was no relationship between Bombus abundance or stigma loading and either fruit set or weight, but there was significant year-to-year variation. Other factors were likely more important in determining yield, and further research is needed to identify those. Under current conditions, native bees provide ample pollination services for maximal yield.
