Let $\psi $ be a decreasing function. We prove zero-infinity Hausdorff measure criteria for the set of dual $\psi $-approximable points and for the set of inhomogeneous multiplicative $\psi $-approximable points on nondegenerate planar curves. Our results extend theorems of Huang [‘Hausdorff theory of dual approximation on planar curves’, J. reine angew. Math. 740 (2018), 63–76] and Beresnevich and Velani [‘A note on three problems in metric Diophantine approximation’, in: Recent Trends in Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, Contemporary Mathematics, 631 (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2015), 211–229] from s-Hausdorff measure, where $s\in \mathbb R$, to the more general g-Hausdorff measure, where g is a suitable class of dimension functions.

We present a Mordell–Weil sieve that can be used to compute points on certain bielliptic modular curves $X_0(N)$ over fixed quadratic fields. We study $X_0(N)(\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt {d}))$ for $N \in \{ 53,61,65,79,83,89,101,131 \}$ and ${\lvert d \rvert < 100}$.

By defining and applying the restricted topology, we have investigated certain connections between the boundary spectrum, the exponential spectrum, the topological boundary of the spectrum and the connected hull of the spectrum (see Mouton and Harte [‘Linking the boundary and exponential spectra via the restricted topology’, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 454 (2017), 730–745]). We now solve a remaining problem regarding the restricted connected hull.

Let G be a p-group for some prime p. Recall that the Hughes subgroup of G is the subgroup generated by all of the elements of G with order not equal to p. In this paper, we prove that if the Hughes subgroup of G is cyclic, then G has exponent p or is cyclic or is dihedral. We also prove that if the Hughes subgroup of G is generalised quaternion, then G must be generalised quaternion. With these results in hand, we classify the tidy p-groups.

Let G be a finite group and $\mathrm {Irr}(G)$ the set of all irreducible complex characters of G. Define the codegree of $\chi \in \mathrm {Irr}(G)$ as $\mathrm {cod}(\chi ):={|G:\mathrm {ker}(\chi ) |}/{\chi (1)}$ and denote by $\mathrm {cod}(G):=\{\mathrm {cod}(\chi ) \mid \chi \in \mathrm {Irr}(G)\}$ the codegree set of G. Let H be one of the $26$ sporadic simple groups. We show that H is determined up to isomorphism by cod$(H)$.

Let $\alpha $ be a complex-valued $2$-cocycle of a finite group $G.$ A new concept of strict $\alpha $-regularity is introduced and its basic properties are investigated. To illustrate the potential use of this concept, a new proof is offered to show that the number of orbits of G under its action on the set of complex-valued irreducible $\alpha _N$-characters of N equals the number of $\alpha $-regular conjugacy classes of G contained in $N,$ where N is a normal subgroup of $G.$

Let H be a subgroup of a finite group G and let $\alpha $ be a complex-valued $2$-cocycle of $G.$ Conditions are found to ensure there exists a nontrivial element of H that is $\alpha $-regular in $G.$ However, a new result is established allowing a prime by prime analysis of the Sylow subgroups of $C_G(x)$ to determine the $\alpha $-regularity of a given $x\in G.$ In particular, this result implies that every $\alpha _H$-regular element of a normal Hall subgroup H is $\alpha $-regular in $G.$

Lin introduced the partition function $\text {PDO}_t(n)$, which counts the total number of tagged parts over all the partitions of n with designated summands in which all parts are odd. Lin also proved some congruences modulo 3 and 9 for $\text {PDO}_t(n)$, and conjectured certain congruences modulo $3^{k+2}$ for $k\geq 0$. He proved the conjecture for $k=0$ and $k=1$ [‘The number of tagged parts over the partitions with designated summands’, J. Number Theory 184 (2018), 216–234]. We prove the conjecture for $k=2$. We also study the lacunarity of $\text {PDO}_t(n)$ modulo arbitrary powers of 2 and 3. Using nilpotency of Hecke operators, we prove that there exists an infinite family of congruences modulo any power of 2 satisfied by $\text {PDO}_t(n)$.

Suppose that R is an associative unital ring and that $E=(E^0,E^1,r,s)$ is a directed graph. Using results from graded ring theory, we show that the associated Leavitt path algebra $L_R(E)$ is simple if and only if R is simple, $E^0$ has no nontrivial hereditary and saturated subset, and every cycle in E has an exit. We also give a complete description of the centre of a simple Leavitt path algebra.

We obtain bounds for certain functionals defined on a class of meromorphic functions in the unit disc of the complex plane with a nonzero simple pole. These bounds are sharp in a certain sense. We also discuss possible applications of this result. Finally, we generalise the result to meromorphic functions with more than one simple pole.

Vertically vibrating a liquid bath may allow a self-propelled wave-particle entity to move on its free surface. The horizontal dynamics of this walking droplet, under the constraint of an external drag force, can be described adequately by an integro-differential trajectory equation. For a sinusoidal wave field, this equation is equivalent to a closed three-dimensional system of nonlinear ODEs. We explicitly define a stability boundary for the system and a quantised criterion for its partial integrability in the meromorphic category.

Erdős proved that every real number is the sum of two Liouville numbers. A set W of complex numbers is said to have the Erdős property if every real number is the sum of two members of W. Mahler divided the set of all transcendental numbers into three disjoint classes S, T and U such that, in particular, any two complex numbers which are algebraically dependent lie in the same class. The set of Liouville numbers is a proper subset of the set U and has Lebesgue measure zero. It is proved here, using a theorem of Weil on locally compact groups, that if $m\in [0,\infty )$, then there exist $2^{\mathfrak {c}}$ dense subsets W of S each of Lebesgue measure m such that W has the Erdős property and no two of these W are homeomorphic. It is also proved that there are $2^{\mathfrak {c}}$ dense subsets W of S each of full Lebesgue measure, which have the Erdős property. Finally, it is proved that there are $2^{\mathfrak {c}}$ dense subsets W of S such that every complex number is the sum of two members of W and such that no two of these W are homeomorphic.

A generating set S for a group G is independent if the subgroup generated by $S\setminus \{s\}$ is properly contained in G for all $s \in S.$ We describe the structure of finite groups G such that there are precisely two numbers appearing as the cardinalities of independent generating sets for G.

We discuss near-perfect numbers of various forms. In particular, we study the existence of near-perfect numbers in the Fibonacci and Lucas sequences, near-perfect values taken by integer polynomials and repdigit near-perfect numbers.

A natural operation on numerical semigroups is taking a quotient by a positive integer. If $\mathcal {S}$ is a quotient of a numerical semigroup with k generators, we call $\mathcal {S}$ a k-quotient. We give a necessary condition for a given numerical semigroup $\mathcal {S}$ to be a k-quotient and present, for each $k \ge 3$, the first known family of numerical semigroups that cannot be written as a k-quotient. We also examine the probability that a randomly selected numerical semigroup with k generators is a k-quotient.

Let $(x_n)_{n\geq 0}$ be a linear recurrence of order $k\geq 2$ satisfying $x_n=a_1x_{n-1}+a_2x_{n-2}+\cdots +a_kx_{n-k}$ for all integers $n\geq k$, where $a_1,\ldots ,a_k,x_0,\ldots , x_{k-1}\in \mathbb {Z},$ with $a_k\neq 0$. Sanna [‘The quotient set of k-generalised Fibonacci numbers is dense in $\mathbb {Q}_p$’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 96(1) (2017), 24–29] posed the question of classifying primes p for which the quotient set of $(x_n)_{n\geq 0}$ is dense in $\mathbb {Q}_p$. We find a sufficient condition for denseness of the quotient set of the kth-order linear recurrence $(x_n)_{n\geq 0}$ satisfying $ x_{n}=a_1x_{n-1}+a_2x_{n-2}+\cdots +a_kx_{n-k}$ for all integers $n\geq k$ with initial values $x_0=\cdots =x_{k-2}=0,x_{k-1}=1$, where $a_1,\ldots ,a_k\in \mathbb {Z}$ and $a_k=1$. We show that, given a prime p, there are infinitely many recurrence sequences of order $k\geq 2$ whose quotient sets are not dense in $\mathbb {Q}_p$. We also study the quotient sets of linear recurrence sequences with coefficients in certain arithmetic and geometric progressions.

For any Liouville number $\alpha $, all of the following are transcendental numbers: ${e}^\alpha $, $\log _{e}\alpha $, $\sin \alpha $, $\cos \alpha $, $\tan \alpha $, $\sinh \alpha $, $\cosh \alpha $, $\tanh \alpha $, $\arcsin \alpha $ and the inverse functions evaluated at $\alpha $ of the listed trigonometric and hyperbolic functions, noting that wherever multiple values are involved, every such value is transcendental. This remains true if ‘Liouville number’ is replaced by ‘U-number’, where U is one of Mahler’s classes of transcendental numbers.

For a nonconstant elliptic surface over $\mathbb {P}^1$ defined over $\mathbb {Q}$, it is a result of Silverman [‘Heights and the specialization map for families of abelian varieties’, J. reine angew. Math. 342 (1983), 197–211] that the Mordell–Weil rank of the fibres is at least the rank of the group of sections, up to finitely many fibres. If the elliptic surface is nonisotrivial, one expects that this bound is an equality for infinitely many fibres, although no example is known unconditionally. Under the Bunyakovsky conjecture, such an example has been constructed by Neumann [‘Elliptische Kurven mit vorgeschriebenem Reduktionsverhalten. I’, Math. Nachr. 49 (1971), 107–123] and Setzer [‘Elliptic curves of prime conductor’, J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 10 (1975), 367–378]. In this note, we show that the Legendre elliptic surface has the desired property, conditional on the existence of infinitely many Mersenne primes.

Given a Fell bundle $\mathscr C\overset {q}{\to }\Xi $ over the discrete groupoid $\Xi $, we study the symmetry of the associated Hahn algebra $\ell ^{\infty ,1}(\Xi \!\mid \!\mathscr C)$ in terms of the isotropy subgroups of $\Xi $. We prove that $\Xi $ is symmetric (respectively hypersymmetric) if and only if all of the isotropy subgroups are symmetric (respectively hypersymmetric). We also characterise hypersymmetry using Fell bundles with constant fibres, showing that for discrete groupoids, ‘hypersymmetry’ equals ‘rigid symmetry’.

Let a, b, c be fixed coprime positive integers with $\min \{ a,b,c \}>1$. Let $N(a,b,c)$ denote the number of positive integer solutions $(x,y,z)$ of the equation $a^x + b^y = c^z$. We show that if $(a,b,c)$ is a triple of distinct primes for which $N(a,b,c)>1$ and $(a,b,c)$ is not one of the six known such triples, then $c>10^{18}$, and there are exactly two solutions $(x_1, y_1, z_1)$, $(x_2, y_2, z_2)$ with $2 \mid x_1$, $2 \mid y_1$, $z_1=1$, $2 \nmid y_2$, $z_2>1$, and, taking $a<b$, we must have $a=2$, $b \equiv 1 \bmod 12$, $c \equiv 5\, \mod 12$, with $(a,b,c)$ satisfying further strong restrictions. These results support a conjecture put forward by Scott and Styer [‘Number of solutions to $a^x + b^y = c^z$’, Publ. Math. Debrecen 88 (2016), 131–138].
