Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) represents a relatively large cryptic species complex. Australia has at least two native populations of B. tabaci sensu lato and these were first found on different host plants in different parts of Australia. The species status of these populations has not been resolved, although their mitochondrial sequences differ by 3.82–4.20%. We addressed the question of whether these AUSI and AUSII B. tabaci populations are distinct species. We used reciprocal cross-mating tests to establish whether the insects from these different populations recognize one another as potential mating partners. The results show that the two native Australian populations of B. tabaci have a mating sequence with four phases, each of which is described. Not all pairs in the control crosses mated and the frequency of mating differed across them. Some pairs in the AUSI-M × AUSII-F did mate (15%) and did produce female progeny, but the frequency was extremely low relative to controls. Microsatellite genotyping of the female progeny produced in the crosses showed these matings were successful. None of the AUSII-M × AUSI-F crosses mated although some of the males did search for females. These results demonstrate the critical role of the mate recognition process and the need to assess this directly in cross-mating tests if the species status of different populations is to be tested realistically. In short, AUSI and AUSII B. tabaci populations are distinct species because the individual males and females do not recognize individuals of the alternative population as potential mating partners.

Despite the fact that symmetry is common in nature, it is rarely perfect. Because there is a wide range of phenotypes which differs from the average one, the asymmetry should increase along with deviation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the level of asymmetry in normal individuals as well as in phenodeviants categorized as minor or major based on abnormalities in forewing venation in honey bees. Shape fluctuating asymmetry (FA) was lower in normal individuals and minor phenodeviants compared with major phenodeviants, whereas the former two categories were comparable in drones. In workers and queens, there were not significant differences in FA shape between categories. FA size was significantly lower in normal individuals compared with major phenodeviant drones and higher compared with minor phenodeviant workers. In queens, there were no significant differences between categories. The correlation between FA shape and FA size was significantly positive in drones, and insignificant in workers and queens. Moreover, a considerable level of directional asymmetry was found as the right wing was constantly bigger than the left one. Surprisingly, normal individuals were significantly smaller than minor phenodeviants in queens and drones, and they were comparable with major phenodeviants in all castes. The correlation between wing size and wing asymmetry was negative, indicating that smaller individuals were more asymmetrical. The high proportion of phenodeviants in drones compared with workers and queens confirmed their large variability. Thus, the results of the present study showed that minor phenodeviants were not always intermediate as might have been expected.

Pidorus euchromioides Walker has two separate diapauses during its life cycle, a winter diapause as a fourth larval instar and a summer diapause as a prepupa in a cocoon. Winter diapause was induced by short photoperiods. The critical day length of 13 h 20 min to 13 h 40 min at 23.3°C under insectary conditions was very similar to the critical day length (13 h 32 min) observed in the field. Sensitivity to day length was restricted to the first 9 days, corresponding to the first and second instars. The duration of larval diapause was not only strongly correlated with the inducing photoperiod, but also dependent on the number of short days experienced during the larval growth period. The shortest diapause occurred at the critical day length, or when the larvae were exposed for 6 days (a critical number of short days) to a photoperiod of LD 12 h:12 h. The summer diapause appeared to be primarily determined by a genetic factor and only occurred in part of the overwintering generation and the first generation. The two different diapause mechanisms play important roles. Winter diapause ensures that P. euchromioides synchronizes its development and activity with the phenology of specific host plants, and summer diapause provides the species with a high degree of adaptation to an unpredictable environment.

A number of insect species infest human households and stored foods and products, leading to their designation as pests. Until recently, little was known about the factors driving the evolution of pests that feed on stored dry foods. Here, I review the effects of changes in climate and species interactions on the evolution and ecology of beetles that feed on dried seeds/grains. My review focuses on evidence that the host utilization by part of the species in the subfamily Bruchinae (Chrysomelidae) is a preadaptation for utilizing stored dry seeds and grains, thus leading to their status as a pest. These and other stored product pest beetles retain a higher percentage of water in their body, relative to the water content of their diet, than beetles that feed on fresh crops. I review the studies that have documented adaptation, acclimation and polyphenetic response to high temperatures and desiccation and/or made direct comparisons between these traits between developmental stages, populations and among higher taxonomic groups. Finally, I review evidence for the effects of environmental change on insect host-parasitoid and competitor assemblages.

The European cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis cerasi (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a major pest of cherries in Europe and parts of Asia. Despite its big economic significance, there is a lack of studies on the genetic structure of its natural populations. Knowledge about an insect pest on molecular, genetic and population levels facilitates the development of environmentally friendly control methods. In this study, we present the development of 13 microsatellite markers for R. cerasi, through cross-species amplification. These markers have been used for the genotyping of 130 individuals from five different sampling sites in Greece. Our results indicate that (i) cross-species amplification is a versatile and rapid tool for developing microsatellite markers in Rhagoletis spp., (ii) the microsatellite markers presented here constitute an important tool for population studies on this pest, and (iii) there is clear structuring of natural European cherry fly populations.

The increase in tolerance to topically applied chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides shown by pregnant female tsetse flies was investigated in Glossina pallidipes. Solvent extracts of male and pregnant female flies, traeted with DDT and endosulfan labelled with carbon-14, were analysed by thin-layer chromatography and autoradiography of the developed chromatograms. No metabolites of these compounds were detected in the internal and faecal extracts. It was considered, therefore, that detoxication of absorbed insecticide was not the machanism responsible for the lower susceptibility to insecticide in the pregnant female fly. It was shown, however, by the above technique, that insecticide was absorbed by the in utero larva.

Measurement of labelled DDT absorbed by the larva was carried out by liquid scintillation counting. The results indicated that this insecticide was slowly taken up by the larva, in an amount increasing with time, and it was suggested that inert storage of toxicant in the larva is a pregnant female. This would be in addition to the effects of increase in weight and other possible physiological factors.

We tested the sulfur-modulated plant resistance hypothesis using potted cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) plants that were grown without and with increasing levels of sulfur fertilization. Changes in plant chemical traits were assessed and developmental performance of Plutella xylostella, a highly host-specific leaf-chewing insect, was followed. Leaf sulfur concentration gradually increased with growing addition of sulfur in soil; however, there was a generalized saturation response curve, with a plateau phase, for improvements in total leaf nitrogen, defense glucosinolates and insect performance. Plutella xylostella performed better in sulfur-fertilized cabbage probably because of the higher level of nitrogen, despite of the higher content of glucosinolates, which are toxic for many non-specialized insects. Despite the importance of sulfur in plant nutrition and production, especially for Brassica crops, our results showed that sulfur fertilization could decrease plant resistance against insects with high feeding specialization.

Morphometric studies of allopatric populations of the Cotesia flavipes species complex representing three putative species; C. flavipes Cameron, C. sesamiae (Cameron) and C. chilonis (Matsumura), were conducted. Sixteen characters were measured. Principal component analysis separated the complex into three somewhat overlapping groups that corresponded well with previous concepts of the species. Canonical variate analysis separated the complex into three distinct clusters with populations from Africa together, populations from Asia and the Neotropics forming a second cluster, and material from China and Japan forming a third cluster. The Mahalanobis squared distances between the three clusters were nearly equal. Results support recognition of three species in the C. flavipes complex.

The evolution of reproductive isolation without geographic isolation (sympatric speciation) has recently gained strong theoretical and empirical supports. It is now widely admitted that many host-specific phytophagous insect species have arisen through shifting and adapting to new plants. The pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum has received considerable attention in this context and is now considered as a probable case of incipient sympatric speciation through host specialization. In Europe, three host races have been described so far, one on annual plants (pea and broad bean) and two on perennial plants (red clover and alfalfa, respectively). These host races are genetically differentiated and exhibit strong ecological specialization affecting their preferences and performances on alternative plants. Here, we investigate whether other life-history traits of ecological importance are associated with host specialization in the species. In particular, because A. pisum shows a genetically determined male wing variation, we tested if its host races also differ in their proportion of winged/wingless male phenotypes. We used a large collection of pea aphid lineages sampled on pea, broad bean, red clover and alfalfa and analyzed their male production by placing them in conditions inducing the sexual phase in A. pisum. Striking differences in the frequency of male dispersal genotypes were found between host populations; aphids producing winged males were in high proportion among lineages from annual hosts, while those producing wingless males were in high proportion on perennial ones. The evolutionary maintenance and ecological consequences of this association between habitat specialization and male wing variation are discussed.

Choice of the targeted host developmental stage, regulation of parasitoid numbers released and introduction of food supplements are operational factors with a potential to influence the level of biological control. In a closed laboratory storage system maintained over two generations of the host, the impact of these three parameters on the control potential of the parasitoid Dinarmus basalis Rondani was investigated for high populations of larvae of Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) feeding inside dry common bean seeds Phaseolus vulgaris. The beans were already infested with immature bruchids at the beginning of the storage period to simulate harvest conditions, characterized in a previous study. Treatments resulted in a reduction of 48–75% of the bruchid population within 16 weeks of storage. The best timing of parasitoid release was at the simulated harvest, as later releases reduced the bruchid population only by about half this percentage. Host feeding is postulated to be the key factor involved in the observed difference. The effect of increasing the number of parasitoids strongly depended on host age and food supplement. Addition of vials with honey had no direct effect on the bruchid population or on the parasitoid progeny. The ecological significance of these findings and implications for biological control are discussed.

Various insecticide use strategies including rotations, sequential use, and mixtures were evaluated experimentally on Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) in California and Arizona (USA) cotton fields. Toxicological responses of adult B. tabaci were measured along with preimaginal densities and cotton yields from plots subjected to different insecticide regimens. Weekly monitoring for susceptibility changes over ten consecutive weeks in four different trials failed to detect significant differences between sequential use and rotation regimens, nor in comparison to the control plots. There were, however, significant differences among study-site locations and between study years as well as significant within-season time effects. Relative infestations in insecticide-treated plots expressed as a percentage of preimaginal densities in control plots indicated that better control was obtained by all insecticide treatments in conjunction with higher susceptibility levels observed in the second year. Lower preimaginal densities of B. tabaci were measured in the rotation treatment in comparison to sequential treatments of endosulfan, chlorpyrifos, or amitraz, but all were less effective than sequential treatments of bifenthrin or the mixture of bifenthrin + endosulfan. Cotton lint yields were inversely related to B. tabaci densities, with highest yields in the bifenthrin and mixture plots and lowest yields in the control plots. Suppression of B. tabaci infestations in insecticide-treated plots relative to untreated control plots also improved under conditions of lower B. tabaci pressure. The increases in cotton yield and susceptibility to insecticides seen in the current study support the trend observed in the southwestern USA of improved management of B. tabaci despite continuing intensive use of insecticides.

The height and direction of mosquito flight related to wind speed and direction, in the absence of a host, was investigated in open savanna in The Gambia, West Africa. Non-directional suction traps (at heigts of 0·68, 2·13 and 3·15 m); directional flight traps facing four directions ar three levels (0·00–1·37 m, 1·45–2·82 m and 2·90–4·27 m) and directional suction traps facing two directions at three heights (0–1·2 m, 2·4–3·7 m nd 4·9–6·1 m) were used. Catches form the non-directional suction traps and pooled data from all flight traps at each level showed an inverse relationship between wind speed and the height of flight of Anopheles melas (Theo.), of gravid females and of male mosquitoes. There was no indication of a similar relationship for the Culex decens Theo. group or for C. thalassius Theo. The results from flight traps and directional suction traps showed that all mosquitoes were apparently flying upwind at all the levels investigaed. It is concluded that, although upwind flight probably does not occur naturally in the open at eights of more than 1 or 2 m, these experiments indicate that upwind flight could occur at higher levels, in the lee of tree and other obstacles.

Six isofemale lines of the aphid parasitoid Aphelinus abdominalis (Dalman) were compared for life history traits related to parasitism of three cereal aphid species. The lines differed most in the number of hosts parasitized in 24 h and the developmental times of females and males. Cluster and discriminant analysis showed that these differences were pronounced between line I, line II and lines III-VI, but not between lines III, IV, V and VI. Cross-breeding experiments revealed reproductive barriers between the lines which proved to differ most in life history traits, indicating the possible existence of morphologically similar species. Given the variability in life history traits between lines of A. abdominalis recorded in this study, we suggest a careful selection of candidate strains for biological control will be rewarding.

The hoverfly Eristalinus aeneus is an important pollinator of crops and wild plants. However, there is a lack of detailed information about its foraging behaviour and its potential as a managed pollinator of mango. Given the growing economic importance of protected cultivation of mango, our aim is to study the flight activity and foraging behaviour of E. aeneus on this crop. Eristalinus aeneus displayed a bimodal daily activity, with peaks during mid-morning and mid-afternoon. The activity was maintained over a wide range of temperature (from 17.8 up to 37.4°C), light intensity (from 8.2 up to 57.4 klux) and relative humidity (from 19.0 up to 88.8%). The syrphids were active most of the time in this crop, and we observed five different types of activity: foraging (67%), resting (17%), flying (10%), grooming (4%) and walking (2%). This hoverfly visited hermaphrodite flowers more often than male flowers. On average, it visited 36.46 ± 13.92 flowers per 5 min, with a higher number of floral visits for nectar feeding. The duration of the visits to hermaphrodite and male flowers was similar but pollen-feeding visits lasted longer (6.44 s per flower) than nectar-feeding ones (5.51 s per flower). The highest number of visits to mango inflorescences was observed during the morning, but the longest visits occurred at midday. The implication of these results for the potential use of E. aeneus as a managed pollinator in protected cultivation of mango is discussed.

The insects referred to in this paper were collected in various parts of Africa: those from Egypt by Mr. F. C. Willcocks, Entomologist to the Khedivial Agricultural Society, Cairo; those from Uganda by Mr. C. C. Gowdey, the Government Entomologist; and the remainder by Mr. S. A. Neave. The collections comprise several species which are known to be destructive to cultivated crops and fruits in various parts of the world; and others, judging by their numbers, must at least be considered of potential economic importance. Out of the total of 32 species, ten are new to science, and the lac-producing Tachardia decorella, Maskell, has not hitherto been recorded from Africa

The beetle, Lema melanopa, is a serious pest of cereal crops in certain areas of Europe and is becoming increasingly common on cereals in Britain. A survey of the literature indicates that the life-history differs in various localities, and no previous account has been given of the life-history in this country.

The life-cycle in Britain is briefly as follows. The adult beetles emerge from hibernation in April, mate and commence to oviposit towards the end of May. Oviposition continues for nearly two months, and adults commence to emerge early in July and continue to do so until September. There is no indication that a second brood occurs, although the climate would permit of one.

The adults feed freely after emergence, but largely on grasses, prior to hibernating in November. In the spring they feed almost exclusively on the leaves of young cereals. The larvae feed principally on cereals. Adults tend to be gregarious and are very long-lived, numbers living over a second winter.

Two larval parasites occur in Britain and further information concerning these is being obtained. Of all larvae collected in the field 25 per cent. were found to be parasitised.

The loss of crop sustained as a result of attack by this pest amounts on the Continent, in extreme cases, to as much as 50 per cent. of the total. Control measures consist of cultural methods, spraying and dusting. Certain of these might be adapted for use in this country with reasonable hope of success.

Possible sources of adults of Spodoptera exempta (Wlk.) giving rise to outbreaks in East Africa at the beginning of the season were estimated by assuming downwind displacement and using the technique of backtracking. The accuracy of backtracks was limited by the availability of suitable weather data, but they provided a reasonably objective means of analysis. Eastern Kenya and eastern Tanzania were found to be the most likely source areas for moths. Migration from Ethiopia was very unlikely. Immigration from southern Somalia into Kenya, and from Malawi, Zambia or northern Mozambique into southern Tanzania was possible in a few years. In most years, there were likely to be sources in Kenya or Tanzania, probably of low density and in places suitable for the larvae to survive the dry season.

The attempt to effect the control of insect pests by the introduction of other insects parasitic elsewhere on members of the same or allied genera, and their propagation in the laboratory on their new host until sufficient numbers for field distribution have been obtained, represents a recent and highly important development of Applied Entomological Science. In this connection may be instanced the introduction into Hawaii of parasites destructive to the sugar-cane leafhopper; the introduction of the Scoliid Tiphia parallela, Smith, from Barbados into Mauritius for the control of the Melolonthid Lachnosterna (Phytalus) smithi, Arrow, a sugar-cane pest; the importation into the U.S.A. of Chalcid, Tachinid, and other parasites of the gipsy and brown-tail moths; and the recent despatch to New Zealand of Tachinid files destructive in England to Forficulidae.

Four species of the genus Rhagoletis are native to Chile: R. nova (Schiner), R. conversa, (Brèthes), R. penela Foote and R. tomatis Foote. Currently, identification of these species is based on morphological criteria, but their strong similarity makes precise recognition difficult. To clarify species separation for quarantine purposes, a reliable method based on a PCR–RFLP procedure is reported. A DNA region containing mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase genes was selected as a target sequence for the analysis. The amplification products (c. 1 kb) were digested with either SspI or DdeI, yielding specific patterns that differentiated each of the endemic species. Complete nucleotide sequences were determined, confirming empirical restriction maps. This report updates information on the geographical distribution of Rhagoletis species in Chile.

Prefatory Note.

Having had the privilege of seeing something of Mr. Chorley's very fine work against Glossina palpalis, and having had four of his traps (of the types shown in Pl. xi, figs. 1, 2, 5) in experimental use myself, I would like to state that he has, in my opinion, done particularly excellent service in evolving several good types of trap for this tsetse-fly. They have not been properly tested yet against other species of tsetse. The choice of exactly suitable sites for the traps, as with all tsetse-traps, is a matter of considerable difficulty and demands expert knowledge, but if skilfully sited, the traps catch well. They represent the acme of cheapness. The mere tacking of a skirt on a Conical Hoop Trap (1912), a Hughen's trap (1919) or a Barrel Trap (Burnett 1918) makes a “ Chorley ” Trap for tsetse-fly. A mere sack or trouserleg kept open by a hoop and with a non-return cage on the top suffices ; and the trap collapses, like a lady's dress, into no space at all. It is simply, in some of its forms (as in Pl. xi, figs. 1, 2, 5), a very slight adaptation to tsetse of Richmond's Crinoline Trap for mosquitos, published in 1927 in the Government of India's Health Bulletin, No. 11 ; in its “ ventilator ” forms (e.g., fig. 3), it is an adaptation of the Wahl & du Plessis trap for blow-flies, published in 1923 in the Journal of the Department of Agriculture of South Africa—though even here the form most used has been cylindrical.
