With the launch of Landsat 7 a new band was added to the Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+). The new panchromatic band 8 covers wavelengths of 0.52–0.92μm and extends over band 2 (0.525–0.605 μm), band 3 (0.630–0.690 μm) and band 4 (0.750–0.900 μm). Its high resolution, with a pixel length of 15 m, is of interest for high-spatial-resolution analysis. This project focused on using Landsat 7 band 8 as a precise tool to obtain remotely the size and shape of permanent snowpatches in the mountainous area west of Abisko, Sweden. In the supervised classification employed, shadowed and non-shadowed areas were classified separately. Supervision of the classification was based on ground-truthing consisting of photographic mapping of the snow cover in the study area. The results from this single-band classification were compared to the results from the normalized- difference snow index (NDSI) and false-color images using bands 2, 4 and 5. This comparison showed similar estimates of the total amount of snow-covered area, with the additional advantage that the Landsat 7 band 8 (LB8) classification detects details in the extent of individual snowfields. This new application and the insights documented here support the use of Landsat 7 band 8 for snow-cover investigations in the future.

Mechanisms that determine time-dependent changes of the marine ice margin in dynamic ice-sheet models are important but poorly understood. Here we derive an empirical formulation for changes in the marine extent when modelling the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets over the last glacial cycle in a three-dimensional thermomechanically coupled ice-sheet model. We assume that the strongest control on changes in marine extent is ice calving, and that the variable most crucial to calving is water depth. The empirical marine-extent relationship is tuned so that the major marine-retreat history of the Laurentide and Eurasian ice sheets is modelled accurately in time and space. We find that this empirical treatment relating marine extent to water depth is sufficient to reproduce the observations, and discuss the implications for the physics of marine margin changes and the dynamics of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets since the Last Glacial Maximum.

Ultra-high-resolution firn-core records covering four annual cycles of oxygen isotope ratios (Δ18O) and trace-ion species were generated from a high-accumulation site on Law Dome, East Antarctica. Event-scale dating of the records was established using hourly snow accumulation measurements from a co-located automatic weather station (AWS). These net accumulation events were used to examine the seasonal timing of Δ18O and a suite of trace-ion species including marine biogenic sulphur compounds (methanesulphonic acid (MSA), non-sea salt sulphate), nitrate and major sea-salt species (sodium, chloride, magnesium). The ultra-high-resolution nature of this study and independent dating scale provide an opportunity to examine exact timings in the seasonality of each species. The traditional summer-maximum species of Δ18O and MSA show consistent relative phasing during midsummer over the four annual cycles. Nitrate shows an erratic seasonal cycle with a general trend characterized by narrow peaks during spring and early summer, preceding the mid-summer peaks in Δ18O and MSA. Non-sea-salt sulphate cycles indicate similar characteristics to MSA signals during summer, but are more comparable to nitrate signals during spring, autumn and winter. This suggests the summer non-sea-salt sulphate signal is driven by biological activity, although this species appears to be linked with nitrate signals outside the summer season. Finally, the sea-salt species indicate a seasonal cycle characterized by maximum concentrations during spring, winter and autumn. Event-scale dating of the firn-core records allows direct comparisons between the seasonal cycles and meteorological conditions. Contemporaneous local air-temperature measurements are compared with the high-resolution Δ18O record. This allows a detailed investigation of the relationship between site temperature and Δ18O signals in the ice core.

The potential effect of meltwater input from the Antarctic ice sheet is studied in sensitivity experiments with an ocean general circulation model coupled to an energy-balance model of the atmosphere. The effect is generally a reduction of surface salinity and deep convection in The Southern Ocean, associated with surface cooling. There is an accompanying, delayed intensification of the overturning in the Northern Hemisphere, leading to warmer conditions over both the North Atlantic and North Pacific With a sufficiently large meltwater pulse it is possible to trigger switches between different steady states of the ocean's thermohaline circulation, which differ mainly in the formation rates of North Atlantic Deep Water. Thus a transient perturbation in the Southern Ocean can lead to long-term climate changes in both hemispheres. The model reacts morè sensitively to melt water input into theWeddell Sea than into the Ross Sea.

Continuous measurements of the radiation budget and meteorological components, along with frequent snow-pit work, were performed in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, during two winters from 2003 to 2005. The measured relationships between broadband albedos and the mass concentration of snow impurities were compared with theoretically predicted relationships calculated using a radiative transfer model for the atmosphere–snow system in which different types (in light absorption) of impurity models based on mineral dust and soot were assumed. The result suggests that the snow in Sapporo was contaminated not only with mineral dust but also with more absorptive soot. A comparison of the measured relationships between broadband albedos and snow grain size for two different layers with the theoretically predicted relationships revealed that the visible albedo contains information about the snow grain size in deeper snow layers (10 cm), and the near-infrared albedo contains only surface information. This is due to the difference in penetration depth of solar radiation into snow between the visible and the near-infrared wavelengths.

This study is part of research activities concentrating on the real-time application of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor for snow-cover analysis of the European Alps. For mapping snow cover in heterogeneous terrain, we implement the widely used linear spectral mixture algorithm to estimate snow cover at sub-pixel scale. Principal component analysis, including the reflective part of AVHRR channel 3, is used to estimate fractions of “snow” and “not snow” within a pixel, using linear mixture modeling. The combination of these features leads to a fast, simple solution for operational and near-real-time processing. The presented algorithm is applied on the European Alps on 17 January 2003 and successfully maps snow at sub-pixel scale. The detailed snow-cover information makes it easy to recognize the complex topography of the Alps, more so than with either a classic binary map or a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow product. The sub-pixel algorithm reasonably identifies snow-cover fractions in regions and at altitudes where neither the classic binary map nor the MODIS algorithm detects any snow. Differences concerning the snow distribution are found in forested areas as well as in the lowest-elevation zones. The algorithm substantially improves snow mapping over complex topography for operational and near-realtime applications.

Benchmark glaciers were established in many alpine areas during the 1960s as part of the International Hydrological Decade to represent ‘typical’ mass and energy processes on glaciers in different climatic regions around the world. These glaciers have received new interest in the past decade because they are used to infer the contribution of alpine glacier wastage to global sea-level rise. We compare South Cascade Glacier, the benchmark glacier for the northwest contiguous USA, and four other secondary glaciers, against the topographic, area and mass changes of 321 glaciers in the surrounding region. Results show that South Cascade Glacier is unusually large, of lower slope and much larger area and had mass losses greater than most other glaciers in the region. Three of the four secondary glaciers were much more typical. Year-to-year variations in mass balance were highly correlated between all five glaciers, and any of these glaciers, including the benchmark glacier, could be used to infer temporal mass variations in the region. However, the use of South Cascade Glacier to estimate area/mass losses for the region would result in overestimating the area/mass changes by a factor of three. Local differences in the magnitude of annual glacier mass balance control cumulative mass changes and area changes. There appears to be no way to select a representative glacier a priori, and knowledge of changes over the region is required. Therefore, there may be great uncertainty in estimates of sea-level rise from the wastage of alpine glaciers based on the benchmark approach. We recommend re-evaluation of regional glacier mass changes inferred from benchmark glaciers in critical regions.

Jakobshavn Isbræ, which terminates in Ilulissat Icefjord, has undergone rapid retreat and is currently the largest contributor to ice-sheet mass loss among Greenland's marine terminating glaciers. Accelerating mass loss is increasing fresh water discharge to the ocean, which can feed back on ice melt, impact marine ecosystems and potentially modify regional and larger scale ocean circulation. Here we present hydrographic observations, including inert geochemical tracers, that allow the first quantitative description of the glacially-modified waters exported from the Jakobshavn/Icefjord system. Observations within the fjord suggest a deep-reaching overturning cell driven by glacial buoyancy forcing. Modified waters containing submarine meltwater (up to 2.5 ± 0.12%), subglacial discharge (up to 6 ± 0.37%) and large portions of entrained ocean waters are seen to exit the fjord and flow north. The exported meltwaters form a buoyant coastal gravity current reaching to 100 m depth and extending 10 km offshore.

A three-dimensional perfectly plastic ice-sheet model, developed for determining the surface elevations and the flow pattern of an ice sheet with given bottom topography and ice-margin positions, is applied to the reconstruction of the glacial ice covers of Greenland and the Canadian Arctic islands. In the northern regions, two different reconstructions have been performed with ice margins along the present 600 and 200 m sea-depth contours, respectively. In central Greenland, the ice margin is considered to be at the outermost ice-margin deposits on the coastal shelf to the west, and at the present 200 m sea-depth contour to the east.

The main conclusions to be drawn from the reconstructions are: (1). The flow pattern of the glacial ice cover of Greenland shows a great resemblance to the present one, the central ice divide being displaced less than 50 km from its present position and being no more than 200 m higher than today. (2). The main ice divide of the ice sheet covering the Canadian Arctic islands (the Innuitian ice sheet) was located over the highlands of eastern Ellesmere Island with local domes positioned over the present ice caps, indicating that even the deep ice of Wisconsin age in these ice caps is of local origin. This is also the case for the Devon Island ice cap. (3). Even in the not very likely case of a rather extensive glacial ice cover in north-west Greenland, the ice-flow pattern upstream of the Camp Century deep drill site would not have changed radically compared to the present flow pattern. Thus it is concluded that even advanced ice margins in late-Wisconsin time could at most have resulted in an elevation of the deposition site of the late-Wisconsin ice at Camp Century 600 m higher than at present. The consequences of this conclusion are discussed.

A mass-balance programme was initiated on Jutulstraumen ice stream, western Dronning Maud Land,Antarctica, during the austral summer 1992-93. As a part of the mass-balance programme, accumulation rate was measured along the centre line of Jutulstraumen from the shelf edge up to the plateau at about 2500 m a.s.l.

Accumulation distribution obtained from seven shallow firn cores and 48 slake readings is presented. The overall net accumulation trend displays a decreasing accumulation with increasing elevation and distance to coast, but on both the mesoscale and microscale there are significant variations. This is due to complex patterns of precipitation controlled by orography and redistribution by katabatic winds. The local accumulation distribution (few km scale) was found to be dependent on downslope surface gradient (aspect north, northwest), and variations up to 100% were found over distances of less than 3 km. The large variation in accumulation is important when selecting new core sites and for interpretation of temporal and spatial variations in accumulation derived from firn cores.

We revisit the input–output mass budget of the high-elevation region of the Greenland ice sheet evaluated by the Program for Arctic Regional Climate Assessment (PARCA). Our revised reference period (1961–90) mass balance of 54±48 Gt a–1 is substantially greater than the 0±21 Gt a–1 assessed by PARCA, but consistent with a recent, fully independent, input–output estimate of high-elevation mass balance (41±61 Gt a–1). Together these estimates infer a reference period high-elevation specific mass balance of 4.8±5.4 cm w.e. a–1. The probability density function (PDF) associated with this combined input–output estimate infers an 81% likelihood of high-elevation specific mass balance being positive (>0 cm w.e. a–1) during the reference period, and a 70% likelihood that specific balance was >2 cm w.e. a–1. Given that reference period accumulation is characteristic of centurial and millennial means, and that in situ mass-balance observations exhibit a dependence on surface slope rather than surface mass balance, we suggest that millennial-scale ice dynamics are the primary driver of subtle reference period high-elevation mass gain. Failure to acknowledge subtle reference period dynamic mass gain can result in underestimating recent dynamic mass loss by ~17%, and recent total Greenland mass loss by ~7%.

Rapid Access Ice Drill is a new drilling technology capable of quickly accessing the glacial bed of Antarctic ice sheets, retrieving ice core and rock core samples, and providing boreholes for downhole logging of physical properties. Scientific goals include searching for old ice near the glacial bed and sampling subglacial bedrock. During field trials near McMurdo Station on a piedmont glacier at Minna Bluff in the 2019–20 austral summer, we successfully completed a ‘top-to-bottom’ operational sequence in three boreholes by (1) augering through firn, (2) creating a borehole packer seal in non-porous ice, (3) establishing fluid circulation, (4) quickly drilling a borehole in ice at penetration rates up to 1.2 m min−1, (5) acquiring a short ice core at depth, (6) penetrating the glacial bed at a depth of ~677 m, (7) recovering a 3.2 m core of ice, basal till and subglacial bedrock, (8) optically logging the borehole on wireline, (9) testing hydrofracture potential by overpressuring the borehole fluid and (10) operating in an environmentally benign yet rapid field mode. Minna Bluff testing, therefore, demonstrates the effectiveness of this integrated system to drill rapidly through thick ice and penetrate across the glacial bed to take cores of bedrock.

Crystal size and c-axis orientation patterns were measured on the Dye 3, Greenland, deep ice core in order to investigate time-dependent changes or alterations in the physical character of the core as a function of time after recovery. The physical measurements were expanded to include depth intervals not previously studied in the field. The recent study focused on core samples located between 1786 m and the bottom of the ice sheet at 2037 m.

Manual c-axis measurements were made on 23 new thin sections using a Rigsby-type universal stage. A new semi-automatic ultrasonic wave-velocity measuring device was developed in order to compare the results with the earlier manual measurements and to study an additional 114 ice-core samples in the Wisconsin-age ice. Crystal-size measurements were made on specimen surfaces by inducing evaporation grooves at crystal boundaries and measuring linear intercepts. The ultrasonically measured test samples were subsequently cleaned and analyzed by ion chromatography in order to measure impurity concentration levels of Cl−, NO3− and SO42− and study their effects on crystal growth and c-axis orientation.

Airborne, Ship-borne and Surface low-frequency electromagnetic (EM) methods have become widely applied to measure Sea-ice thickness. EM responses measured over Sea ice depend mainly on the Sea-water conductivity and on the height of the Sensor above the Sea-ice–sea-water interface, but may be Sensitive to the Sea-ice conductivity at high excitation frequencies. We have conducted in Situ measurements of direct-current conductivity of Sea ice using Standard geophysical geoelectrical methods. Sea-ice thickness estimated from the geoelectrical Sounding data was found to be consistently underestimated due to the pronounced vertical-to-horizontal conductivity anisotropy present in level Sea ice. At five Sites, it was possible to determine the approximate horizontal and vertical conductivities from the Sounding data. The average horizontal conductivity was found to be 0.017 Sm–1, and that in the vertical direction to be 9–12 times higher. EM measurements over level Sea ice are Sensitive only to the horizontal conductivity. Numerical modelling has Shown that the assumption of zero Sea-ice conductivity in interpretation of airborne EM data results in a negligible error in interpreted thickness for typical level Antarctic Sea ice.

Variability of the sea-ice cover (extent) in the Northern Hemisphere (Arctic and subpolar regions) associated with the Arctic Oscillation (AO) is investigated using historical data from 1901 to 1997. A principal-component analysis (empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs)) was applied to sea-ice area (SIA) anomalies for the period 1953−95. The leading EOF mode for the SI A anomaly shows an in-phase fluctuation in response to the AO and is called the Arctic sea-ice oscillation (ASIO). Arctic sea ice experiences seasonal variations that differ in timing and magnitude. Four types of seasonal variation are identified in the Arctic sea ice, and are superimposed on long-term interannual to decadal variability. Consistent with the total Arctic SIA anomaly eight regional SIA anomalies have shown significant in-phase decrease (downward trend) since 1970, possibly part of a very long-term (century) cycle. Thus, it is recommended that SIA anomalies in the sensitive seasons be used to better capture interannual, interdecadal and longer (century) variability. Major decadal and interdecadal time-scales of SIA anomalies are found at 12−14 and 17−20 years. In the Sea of Okhotsk, a century time-scale is evident. The reduction rate (negative trend) of the total Arctic sea-ice cover in the last three decades is −4.5% per decade, with the summer rate being the highest (-10.2% per decade). The contribution to this total reduction varies from region to region, with sea-ice cover in the Greenland and Norwegian Seas experiencing the highest reduction rate of −20.2 % per decade.

Significant improvements to the representation of climate forcing and mass-balance response in a coupled two-dimensional global energy balance climate model (EBM) and vertically integrated ice-sheet model (ISM) have led to the prediction of an ice-volume chronology for the most recent ice-age cycle of the Northern Hemisphere that is close to that inferred from the geological record. Most significant is that full glacial termination is delivered by the model without the need for new physical ingredients. In addition, a relatively close match is achieved between the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) model ice topography and that of the recently-described ICE-4G reconstruction. These results suggest that large-scale climate system reorganization is not required to explain the main variations of the North American (NA) ice sheets over the last glacial cycle. Lack of sea-ice and marine-ice dynamics in the model leaves the situation over the Eurasian (EA) sector much more uncertain.

The incorporation of a gravitationally self-consistent description of the glacial isostatic adjustment process demonstrates that the NA and EA bedrock responses can be adequately represented by simpler damped-relaxation models with characteristic time-scales of 3–5ka and 5 ka, respectively. These relaxation times agree with those independently inferred on the basis of postglacial relative sea-level histories.

Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) snow-depth data for Antarctic sea ice are compared with ship-based visual observations of snow depth, ice type and ridged-ice fraction, and with satellite C-band and Ku-band radar backscatter observations for two ship cruises into the Weddell Sea (ISPOL 2004–05,WWOS 2006) and one cruise into the Bellingshausen Sea (SIMBA 2007) during late winter/spring. Most (>75%) AMSR-E and ship-based snow-depth observations agree within 0.2 m during WWOS and SIMBA. Remaining observations indicate substantial underestimations of snow depths by AMSR-E data. These underestimations tend to increase with the ridged-ice fraction for WWOS and SIMBA. In areas with large snow depths, a combination of relatively stable low C-band radar backscatter and variable Ku-band radar backscatter is associated with undeformed first-year ice and may indicate snow metamorphism at this time of year during SIMBA. In areas with small snow depths, a combination of relatively stable low Ku-band radar backscatter, high C-band radar backscatter and low C-band radar backscatter standard deviations is associated with rough first-year ice during SIMBA. This information can help to better understand causes of the observed AMSR-E snow-depth bias during late-winter/spring conditions with decreasing average snow depth and to delineate areas where this bias occurs.

Grease ice is a mixture of sea water and frazil ice crystals forming in Arctic and Antarctic waters. the initial grease-ice cover, or the grease ice forming during winter in leads and polynyas, may therefore have mixed properties of water and ice. Most sea-ice models use a lower thickness limit on the solid sea ice, representing a transition from grease ice to solid ice. Before grease ice solidifies it is often packed into a layer by the local wind. Existing field measurements of grease ice are compared and used to evaluate a new thickness parameterization including the drag from the wind as well as the ocean current. the measurements support a scaling of the wind drag and the back pressure from the grease-ice layer using a nonlinear relation. the relation is consistent with an increasing grease-ice thickness towards a solid boundary. Grease-ice data from Storfjorden, Svalbard, confirm that tidal currents are strong enough to add significant drag force on the grease ice. A typical wind speed of only 10ms −1 results in a 0.3m thick layer of grease ice. Tidal currents of 0.5ms −1 will pack the grease ice further towards a stagnant boundary to a mean thickness of 0.8 m.

Hydrogen peroxide is present in polar snow and ice in remarkably high concentrations. With values up to 300 ppb, H2O2 is one of the most concentrated impurities in polar ice. We present a continuous H2O2 firn record from Siple Station (Antarctica); it covers the last 83 years with a resolution of 10–20 samples per year. A very strong seasonality is present in this record. This seasonality is also observed in a Greenland ice core from Dye 3, where we have continuously measured the top 10 m with the same resolution. The maximum concentrations correspond to summer snow layers and can exceed winter snow concentrations by a factor of 10. This property makes H2O2 a useful tracer for dating suitable cores by counting annual layers. The different steps needed to relate the atmospheric to the ice–core H2O2 concentration are discussed. As with isotopic tracers, diffusion in the firn smooths the original H2O2 concentration profile.

Long-term trends, interannual and intra-seasonal variability in the mass-balance record from Djankuat glacier, central Greater Caucasus, Russia, are related to local climate change, synoptic and large-scale anomalies in atmospheric circulation. A clear warming signal emerged in the central Greater Caucasus in the early 1990s, leading to a strong increase in ablation. In the absence of a compensating change in winter accumulation, the net mass balance of Djankuat has declined. The highest value of seasonal ablation on record was registered in the summer of 2000. At the beginning of the 21st century these trends reversed. Ablation was below average even in the summer of 2003, which was unusually warm in western Europe. Precipitation and winter accumulation were high, allowing for a partial recovery of net mass balance. The interannual variability in the components of mass balance is weakly related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Scandinavian teleconnection patterns, but there is a clear link with the large-scale circulation anomalies represented by the Rossby pattern. Five synoptic categories have been identified for the ablation season of 2005, revealing a strong separation between components of radiation budget, air temperature and daily melt. Air temperature is the main control over melt. The highest values of daily ablation are related to the strongly positive NAO which forces high net radiation, and to the warm and moist advection from the Black Sea.
