Antarctic ice-elevation maps are presented, based on 4 000 measurement points, analysed from traverses made by constant-density balloons. These balloons were launched during the Tropical Wind, Energy Conversion and Reference Level Experiment (TWERLE). The TWERLE data yielded daily maps of the elevation of the 150 mbar pressure surface in the southern hemisphere. These maps serve as a reference level from which the altimeter readings are subtracted to yield the ice elevation.

The accuracy of the ice-elevation data is estimated at better than 60 m. The accuracy of the contouring depends on the density of measurements in the particular area. Two contouring techniques were used. One is based on generating elevation data at fixed grid-points from arbitrarily distributed measurements, using Cressman's method. The second is a surface spline interpolation technique by Duchon.

The elevation data are of special value on the inland plateau areas. There, the typical distance between balloon measurements is sufficiently small, relative to the typical distance between contour lines at 100 m intervals. Furthermore, the inland areas are the least accessible to other mapping techniques.

The morphology of snow crystals growing at a low temperature has been experimentally studied. The habit and the morphological instability of the crystals vary remarkably with air pressure. In addition, the morphological instability of the crystals depends not only on air pressure but also on supersaturation, crystal size, the ratio of growth rates and the ratio of axial lengths. It is supposed from the experimental results that long prisms with small skeletal structures forming at low supersaturation are precipitating in polar regions.

A numerical simulation of simple two-dimensional shear of round uniform grains is used to investigate the dynamic friction characteristics of the layer of snow at the base of an avalanche. For steady, uniform flow on a uniform flat surface, the dynamic friction coefficient transmitted through the shear array is found as it varies with the shear speed and normal force applied to the top of the shear layer, and the properties of the particles in the shear layer.

For this simple model, the flow in the shear layer is found to be independent of the total number of layers in the shear flow. A slip plane is formed along which most of the shearing motion takes places, so that the shear is confined to just two layers of particles which slide over one another. In the absence of gravity this slip plane jumps up and down randomly within the shear layer, which is otherwise composed of agitated semi-dispersed particles.

Topographic sketch mapping of the whole ablation area of the Khumbu Glacier, East Nepal Himalaya, is performed, using a simple, stereo-photogrammetric method. This map shows that the surface morphology can be classified into 11 morphologic characteristics. Depending on their distribution and combination, the ablation area can be divided into four morphologic areas. Detailed maps, on a scale of 1:1000–2500, of these four areas indicate that the distribution and combination of these 11 morphologic characteristics result from thickness of the debris cover, supraglacial streams and ponds, and glacier dynamics. The irregularity in the ablation area of the Khumbu Glacier can be considered to be a consequence of the mass balance between rate of ice charge from upstream and irregular distribution of ablation rate, depending on debris-cover characteristics in situ.

We review successes and challenges from five recent subglacial bedrock drilling campaigns intended to find evidence for Antarctic Ice Sheet retreat during warm periods in the geologic past. Insights into times when the polar ice sheets were smaller than present serve as guiding information for modeling efforts that aim to predict the rate and magnitude of future sea level rise that would accompany major retreat of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. One method to provide direct evidence for the timing of deglaciations and minimum extent of prior ice sheets is to extract subglacial bedrock cores for cosmogenic nuclide analysis from beneath the modern ice sheet surface. Here we summarize the lessons learned from five field seasons tasked with obtaining bedrock cores from shallow depths (<120 m beneath ice surface) across West Antarctica since 2016. We focus our findings on drilling efforts and technology and geophysical surveys with ground-penetrating radar. Shallow subglacial drilling provides a high risk, high reward means to test for past instabilities of the Antarctic Ice Sheet, and we highlight key challenges and solutions to increase the likelihood of success for future subglacial drilling efforts in polar regions.

A new gauge to detect drifting snow has been tested at an experimental site at La Molina, eastern Spanish Pyrenees during the 1996 winter.

Based on an acoustic principle, it consiste of a miniature microphone located at the base of an aluminium pole of a Variable length (depending on the average height of the snow accumulated in a season). While snowdrifting occurs and the pole is exposed to the flux (wind + snow particles), the snow grains impact on the pole and the sound produced by these collisions is recorded as an electrical signal.

30 m away from the snowdrifting detector, there is an anemometric station. The comparison of both records allows determination of thresholds and deposit wind velocities. In addition, this gauge allows users to know, during a wind episode, the exact amount of time during which snowdrifting occurs without being in the field. The interpretation of the values obtained using the acoustic detector is not yet an easy subject to discuss. We slill do not know what the drift-density equivalents for tile recorded noise levels are. However, these are only preliminary results and we expect to complete the calibration of the gauge during the coming months.

Ice-stream velocities can change rapidly. Understanding the spatial and temporal pattern of these changes and the forcings responsible is essential for predicting ice-sheet mass balance. Inland migration of the onset location will lead to more efficient drainage of inland ice. One way to monitor the stability of the onset location is to investigate changes in the velocity field. We report on the velocity near the onset of Bindschadler Ice Stream, West Antarctica, in 2002 and compare these data to the velocity measured in 1996. Mean annual velocities were determined by measuring the GPS position of markers during consecutive seasons. We compare our results with similar measurements from 1996 to investigate temporal changes in this ice-stream onset. Our results indicate that only minimal changes have occurred in the speed of the ice stream between 1996 and 2002.

Temperature measurements taken in young, landfast Antarctic sea ice show daily oscillations consistent with heating by solar radiation. We present and solve a heat conduction model for the temperature with a non-linear thermal capacity and a distributed source term for solar power absorption based on Monte Carlo scattering simulations of penetrating photons. We observe two characteristic modes for solar heating in sea ice, one dominated by travelling thermal waves or conduction in the upper half, and the other dominated by in-place solar heating in the lower half. We note that deep thermal responses to solar radiation are larger by a factor of ∼ 10 than predicted by scattering measurements, due possibly to the presence of algae and/or dissolved organic material.

Data collected over Svalbard on 28 June 1984 by a 13.81 GHz airborne radar altimeter enabled analysis of signals returned from two relatively large ice masses. Wave forms received over the ice caps of Austfonna and Vestfonna are analysed with the aid of existing aerial photography, radio echo-sounding data, and Landsat MSS images acquired close to the date of the altimeter flight. Results indicate that altimeter wave forms are controlled mainly by surface roughness and scattering characteristics. Wet snow surfaces have narrow 3 dB back-scatter half-angles and cause high-amplitude signals, in contrast to relatively dry snow surfaces with lower-amplitude diffuse signals. Metre-scale surface roughness primarily affects wave-form amplitude and leading-edge slope, this becoming apparent over ice streams on Vestfonna.

With an airborne lidar, we have observed massive plumes of condensate particles rising from wintertime leads in the Arctic Ocean. Some of these plumes reached an altitude of 4 km; some extended over 200 km down-wind from their surface source. Here we invert the lidar equation and use lidar backscatter data to infer particle concentrations within two such plumes. Assuming that the plumes consist of supercooled water droplets of radius 5 μm, we estimate typical concentrations of 3–6 × 105 droplets m-3 just above the leads. Concentrations within the plumes can still be as high as 104 droplets m-3 at an altitude of 3 km and 200 km down-wind from some leads. Had we assumed that the plume particles are ice spheres of radius 40 μm, concentrations would be just 100 times less than these.

Fourteen shallow snow/firn cores were drilled with the Polar Ice Coring Office light-weight hand-coring auger in Wilkes Land, along a line approximately long. 111°E between lat. 66° and 74°S. Five of these cores, all between 20 and 30 m deep, are studied in detail in this paper: LJ, BJ, GC30, GC40 and GC46. The physical geographical conditions differ at these five stations, but the general trend is for mean annual accumulation rate and mean annual temperature to decrease farther south, with increasing elevation. At the southernmost station, GC46, the mean annual temperature is –52.5°C, and accumulation rate is 52 kg m−2 a−1.

The density measurements of the snow/firn were made in a cold-room at temperatures from –14− to –18−C, by taking consecutive samples from the core and measuring the mass of each sample of known volume. The characteristics of the initial densification (to a density of 550 kg m−3) – variation in snow/firn density with depth, the densification rate of snow/firn, and the compactive viscosity coefficient of snow/firn – are studied, and the factors affecting this initial densification process are discussed.

The following observations were made and conclusions reached:

1. 1. Plots of all the measurements, from each core, of density against depth showed three different patterns. The first type, typical of the coastal areas, shows a very great variability of density at shallow depth, reducing with an increase in depth. The second, typical of the high inland stations, shows a smaller scatter of densities at shallow depth, again reducing with an increase in depth. The third type is a pattern intermediate between these two. So, the range of density fluctuation with a depth range in any core is greater at the top of the core than at the bottom, and at the same depth in different cores the variation in density is greater where the mean annual temperature is higher.

2. 2. The snow/firn density increases with an increase in depth at all stations, and the densification rate is higher at stations with higher mean annual temperature.

3. 3. The mean density of snow/firn in the top 1 m decreases farther inland, and this decrease appears to be closely related to the decrease in temperature.

4. 4. The mean densification rate is compared with the mean annual temperature and the mean annual accumulation rate over the past 40 years in the most southerly cores. The mean annual temperature is found to be the more important factor affecting the densification rate in the surface snow/firn on the cold ice sheet.

5. 5. At each station, for ρ = 550 kg m−3, a linear relationship is found between log compactive-viscosity coefficient of snow/firn and mean annual temperature for a constant density. If only stations with a mean annual temperature below –25°C (i.e. no melt features are present in the stratigraphy) are considered, then these results from Wilkes Land are very similar to the results obtained by Nishimura and others (1983) from Mizuho Plateau, East Antarctica.

Good hydrological knowledge is necessary for the planning of a hydro-electric power installation. Observations of daily discharge in Norwegian streams are available for several decades, but for glacierized basins there is a lack of information. Either the observation period is too short or it comprises mainly years when glaciers retreated and thus produced extra amounts of melt water – a direct result of negative mass balance. Consequently, many discharge figures are too ‘optimistic” — they indicate larger average run-off than would be the case if glaciers were in a steady state, or, even worse, if they started to grow and then started to reduce their melt-water contribution to rivers.

Our means of correcting actually observed discharge figures for glacier influence is to perform annual mass-balance measurements. This has been done since 1948 for one glacier and since 1962 for several glaciers and results have been used in the planning of power stations. The method is, however, relatively costly.

Another method is now being developed. Repeated glacier mapping makes it possible to calculate the average change (decrease) in glacier volume between the years when air photographs were taken. Therefore, several glacier maps have been produced based upon older vertical photographs and new maps are constructed from repeated air photography of the same glaciers. By subtraction, the total decrease in ice volume can be calculated and, hence, corrections of observed discharge be made.

This method is quicker and cheaper than conventional mass-balance measurements. Large potentials for this method lie in future digital maps.

Almost all the detailed (1:10 000) Norwegian glacier maps are printed in four colours and they have a standard UTM coordinate grid and 10 m contours. An example of a recent map is enclosed in the map pocket on the rear cover of this volume.

The meltwater percolation process through the snowpack greatly influences its physical and mechanical properties. The percolation process is important for understanding the spring avalanche phenomenon as well as the meltwater runoff for basin hydrology studies. The permeability of individual snow layers depends on parameters such as porosity, pore connectivity and the geometrical shape of the pores. Snowpack equivalent permeability plays an important role in governing the transmission of meltwater through the different layers of the snowpack. In this paper, we present the design, fabrication and installation of a snowmelt lysimeter at Patsio field research station, Himachal Pradesh, India, and determine the snowpack equivalent permeability using lysimeter discharge data. The snowmelt lysimeter, having a collector area of 6.25 m2 and a high-capacity snowmelt measuring tipping bucket, was installed on flat ground near the observatory with a data acquisition system. Snowmelt discharge measurements were made for two melt seasons, 2006/07 and 2007/08. Snow and meteorological data were collected at 15 min intervals using a semi-automatic weather station. The hourly surface snowmelt was estimated using an energy-balance approach. The maximum daily discharge was >2 mm w.e.h−1 for most of the observation period. The daily mean wave speed of the meltwater front varied from 109 to 285 mm h−1 for a daily mean discharge range of 0.6–1.8 mm w.e.h−1, while wave speeds for a particular melt flux of 2 mm w.e.h−1 varied between 113 and 486 mm h−1. The pore-size distribution index was estimated using the power-fit relation between wave speed and discharge. The equivalent permeability of the snowpack was found to vary between 3.4 × 10−8 and 9.9 × 10−12 m2.

A 43 year oxalate record has been recovered in a 14.08m ice core from Ürümqi glacier No. 1 (43˚06’N, 86˚49’ E), a mid-latitude glacier at Ürümqi river head, Tien Shan, western China. Averaging 3.6±9.2 ng g–1 the oxalate has a background level <2 ng g–1 with sporadic concentration enhancements. Most of the spikes reach beyond 10 ng g–1 and have durations 51 year. the oxalate variation correlates with that in Far East Rongbuk Glacier (27˚59’N, 86˚55’ E), Qomolangma (Mount Everest), which is located 1600 kmawayacross the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau and Taklimakandesert. Although the concentration enhancement in the latter is much higher, and lasts longer, oxalate reaches its highest concentration in both cores at the same time, during winter. the correlation of oxalate records suggests that the two areas may have had the same kind of local sources, but with a much larger (COO)22– flux in the Qomolangma area, or that they may have had a common source in the Indian subcontinent through the longitudinal atmospheric circulation. the concentration variation in the past 40 years coincides with industrial/economic development in southern Asia, and is mainly due to anthropogenic pollution.

Configurations of relict surface-crevasse bands and medial moraines that emanate from the shear margins of ice streams are simulated, using a numerical model of an ideal rectangular ice shelf to determine their potential for recording a past ice-stream discharge chronology.

Intense deformation within an extensive englacial debris layer appears to be a dominant flow mechanism for glaciers on Mount St Helens, Washington. Observations of this phenomenon have been made on Shoestring Glacier and more recently on other glaciers on the volcano. Transverse velocity profiles on Shoestring Glacier have shown a marked plug flow behavior occurring between narrow marginal zones of crevassing. Both longitudinal and transverse velocity profiles on Shoestring Glacier were measured during the year before and the two years after the cataclysmic eruption of the volcano on 18 May 1980.

The geometry and regime of every glacier on Mount St Helens dramatically changed during the eruption. The entire accumulation area of Shoestring Glacier was removed by a volcanic landslide and blast, and the glacier surface was deeply incised through the action of pyroclastic flows and mudflows. Surface velocity measurements were supplemented by vertical profiles taken along the newly exposed ice cliffs. Large velocity gradients seen in the transverse, longitudinal and vertical profiles coincided with the mapped location of a recently exposed englacial debris layer. Further detailed measurements on the vertical profiles show that the intense shear occurs by deformation internal to the debris layer, A study of the properties of debris-laden ice was undertaken to determine the mechanism for localization of deformation to the debris layer and for the associated response of the glacier to a sudden change in stress.

The equation describing the surface evolution of a large ice sheet is examined on the basis of a scale analysis applied to Antarctic conditions. Changes in the surface elevation are mainly driven by mass-balance fluctuations which approximately follow global atmospheric temperature variations. The essential spatial non-uniformity of the accumulation rate and the resultant difference between central and coastal regions in reaction time-scales are taken into account. The dynamic interaction of the time-lagging interior with the quasi-stationary margin is described. As a result, a simplified model is deduced to simulate the surface-elevation variations in the central parts of the Antarctic ice sheet caused by mass-balance perturbations corresponding to the main Milankovich cycles with the periods of 19–100 kyears. Special computational tests are performed to validate the model through intercomparison with the predictions obtained with a two-dimensional thermomechanical model. The sensitivity of the model to physical factors (represented by dimensionless tuning parameters) is discussed. Climatically controlled variations of the ice-sheet thickness in the vicinity of Vostok Station during the past 200 kyears are estimated.

The Polar Sea Ice Topography REconstruction System, or PSITRES, is a 3D camera system designed to continuously monitor an area of ice and water adjacent to an ice-going vessel. Camera systems aboard ships in the polar regions are common; however, the application of computer vision techniques to extract high-level information from the imagery is infrequent. Many of the existing systems are built for human involvement throughout the process and lack automation necessary for round the clock use. The PSITRES was designed with computer vision in mind. It can capture images continuously for days on end with limited oversight. We have applied the system in different ice observing scenarios. The PSITRES was deployed on three research expeditions in the Arctic and Subarctic, and we present applications in measuring ice concentration, melt pond fraction and presence of algae. Systems like PSITRES and the computer vision algorithms applied represent steps toward automatically observing, evaluating and analyzing ice and the environment around ships in ice-covered waters.
