Acertadamente se ha calificado de “carta magna de la civilización mexicana” a la Obediencia e Instrucción que Fr. Francisco de los Angeles Quiñones, ministro general de la orden franciscana, entregara a Fr. Martín de Valencia y a sus compañeros poco antes de partir de España para el imperio axteca. En sus cláusulas, rebasando los límites de las fórmulas oficiales, vuelca Quiñones su espíritu misionero, de raigambre profundamente franciscana y sienta los principios básicos de todo apostolado con especial referencia al franciscano.
Con todo, nadie se ha parado a analizarlos bajo el aspecto misionológico ni subrayado la importancia e influjo que tuvieron en la epopeya evangelizadora de los Doce. Es lo que nos proponemos hacer en estas páginas.
