Previous publications have called attention to the problem of flint decomposition or alteration in artifact and workshop materials from Archaic horizons in coastal Georgia. On the Macon Plateau, Georgia, there are stratigraphic indications of a prepottery horizon characterized by an old artifact assemblage of stemmed and concave-based projectiles, a wide range of cutting tools, both scraper and knife categories, all exhibiting partial or complete chemical alteration of the material (Kelly 1938). Related sites showing similar phenomena of altered flint, in contexts implying Archaic quarries or workshops, have been found in archaeological surveys at Lane Springs in northern Decatur County, Georgia, and in Kinchafoonee, in a Highway 19 road profile on the outskirts of Albany, Georgia (Kelly 1950). Recently, Kelly summarized these and other occurrences indicative of the widespread distribution of such materials over the entire coastal plain of Georgia (Kelly 1954). The difficulties of utilizing decomposed flint for chronometric studies were also summarized (Kelly 1953).

The University of Arizona Archaeological Field School under the joint auspices of the Arizona State Museum and the Department of Anthropology has been in operation for over 10 years. During the course of this longterm archaeological program several reports concerning Point of Pines archaeology have appeared. As a result of work since the publication of these reports, certain changes are justified in the phase sequence and in the terminology as it applies to textured pottery types. Making these changes known in abbreviated form reflects the current status of these 2 subjects. The changes and the resulting implications will be considered in detail in dissertations being prepared individually by the authors.

The large oyster shell heaps on both sides of the Damariscotta River, just north of the towns of Damariscotta and Newcastle, Maine, have been known for many years and both geologists and archaeologists have speculated about their age. During the summer of 1955 I made 2 collections of Mya shells from the largest shell heap on the west side of the river (Glidden estate) for radiocarbon age determinations.

The Marksville site lies about a mile to the east of the small town of that name, in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. Its earthworks, which were first described by Gerard Fowke (1928: 405–34), belong to several distinct components: the Nick site, the Greenhouse site, and the Marksville site proper (Ford 1951: 13–14). The latter component — the oldest of the three — consists of Fowke's “Enclosure A” (Fig. 1), a group of 5 mounds situated on the edge of a steep, eastward-facing bluff and enclosed on the west by a semicircular earthen rampart 4 to 7 feet high and more than half a mile long. Just to the south of this enclosure lies a circular embankment which may be of comparable age. Further south lies the Nick site (Fowke's “Mound 1“) which is known to be younger than the structures of Enclosure A.

It seems somewhat tardy to set right a mistake made 24 years ago, especially as I learned that it was one not very long after. But better late than never.

The matter concerns some tubular carved bone objects I published in Artifacts of Pecos, page 263, and Figure 220. I was at a loss as to their use, but said that although I had no clue to their exact period, one was certainly prehistoric.

In Notes and News in 1953 in American Antiquity (Vol. 19, No. 1, pp. 100–1) there is the following statement: “If interglacial artifacts are present in America, they will of necessity be of very crude nature.” This follows a discussion of the specimens found and described by George F. Carter in California, Carmen Baggerly in Michigan, and others in California and Texas. Amos Green of Eau Claire, Michigan, has recently collected and submitted to us at the University of Michigan a number of specimens equally as crude as those from the West and Southwest.

Laboratory and library research, undertaken in the course of preparing a report on the Manakaway site of the East River aspect, Greenwich, Connecticut, have caused me to entertain doubts about some of the interpretations and divisions set forth by Smith in his Archaeology of Coastal New York (1950). This paper will air these doubts in the hope of soliciting comment and of stimulating interest in the unworked areas of this region, so that workers in the future will have more accurate data on which to build their conclusions.

A few weeks prior to the bulldozing of a segment of the Schurz site (Lopez 1955), in the southeast corner of the Bronx, within the city limits of New York, a salvage dig was conducted by Harry Trowbridge, George Younkheere, Stanley Wisniewski, Theodore Kazimiroff, and Wayne Arnold under the writer's direction.

One of the items found was a polished birdstone frag’ ment (Fig. 1) which deserves special mention since so few effigies of this sort have been discovered hereabouts.

For the student of the archaeology of the Plains, Browns Valley Man has been an engima. Loosely dated between 8000 and 12,000 years ago by Jenks (Jenks 1937a: 17) it has remained in splendid isolation — an important group of artifacts found in a burial site with the skeleton of a man who may be presumed to have been their maker — with, heretofore, no known close affiliations. That he hunted the giant bison has been inferred in an unpublished script by Lloyd Wilford to accompany a filmstrip on Minnesota archaeology being prepared by the University of Minnesota. This must be presumed to be based on one or both of 2 midden sites of giant bison dug by Jenks, Wilford, and Eddy. One of these has been described in a brief note in Science by Jenks (Jenks 1937b: 243–4). The other site has no published data.

The subject of this report is a group of 70 gravers collected in 1954 and 1955 from the surface of a village site about 12 miles southeast of Madison, Wisconsin. The finding of this number of gravers at a single site is unusual and is also of special interest since gravers have usually been associated with Archaic and earlier horizons. A separate report (Nero 1955) has been published on the total assemblage of artifacts from the site, material which represents a conglomeration of several cultures, though an Archaic-like complex predominates.
