Two models relating various measures of camp surface area to population size among !Kung Bushmen are examined. It is shown that though there does exist a significant, positive correlation between some areal measures and population size, neither of the previously published models correctly represents these relationships. Alternative regression models are presented for the !Kung Bushmen which describe surface area as a function of population size in an acceptably accurate and reasonably concise fashion.

A recalculation of the regression and correlation with which Casteel finds fault shows that it is Casteel who is incorrect. He goes astray because he does not understand what "LS:NA" means, and consequently all of the X values on his graph are wrong.

Gramly (1977) has recently argued that competition over deer hids was the primary variable stimulating conflict and warfare among the Huron during Late Woodland times. This variable, as well as two others dismissed by him, is reviewed here.

Two of Gramly's (1977) assumptions, aboriginal deer density and a hunting orientation among the Huron aimed at procuring deerskins, are evaluated using ethnohistorical data. An alternate hypothesis concerning the relationship between a Huron tribal confederacy and deer hunting is then offered.

The type-variety system of ceramic classification has been criticized on a number of theoretical points concerning typology in general; yet it remains very popular among archaeologists. This paper adds a methodological criticism to the debate: ceramic data presented according to the highest standards of type-variety analysis simply cannot be used for independent reanalysis. An attempt to reanalyze some data presented according to the type-variety system [Formative period ceramics from the site of Barton Ramie, Belize] is described, and shortcomings of type-variety data presentation are pointed out. These findings are in direct opposition to claims made by type-variety practitioners as to the adequacy of their format of ceramic description and illustration.
