In this paper, we consider the transform magnetic (TM) model of electromagnetic scattering in the cavity. By the Polynomial Preserving Recovery technique, we present superconvergence analysis for the vertex-edge-face type finite element. From the numerical example, we can see that the provided method is efficient and stable.

This study investigates the applicability of the singular boundary method (SBM), a recent developed meshless boundary collocation method, for the analysis of two-dimensional (2D) thin structural problems. The troublesome nearly-singular kernels, which are crucial in the applications of SBM to thin shapes, are dealt with efficiently by using a non-linear transformation technique. Promising SBM results with only a small number of boundary nodes are obtained for thin structures with the thickness-to-length ratio is as small as 1E-9, which is sufficient for modeling most thin layered coating systems as used in smart materials and micro-electro-mechanical systems. The advantages, disadvantages and potential applications of the proposed method, as compared with the finite element (FEM) and boundary element methods (BEM), are also discussed.

Intrigued by our recent experimental work (H. Yamaguchi and X. D. Niu, J. Fluids Eng., 133 (2011), 041302), the present study numerically investigate the flow-structure interactions (FSI) of three rigid circular particles aligned moving in an inclined channel flow at intermediate Reynolds numbers by using a momentum-exchanged immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method. A ”frog-leap” phenomenon observed in the experiment is successfully captured by the present simulation and flow characteristics and underlying FSI mechanisms of it are explored by examining the effects of the channel inclined angles and Reynolds numbers. It is found that the asymmetric difference of the vorticity distributions on the particle surface is the main cause of the “frog-leap” when particle moves in the boundary layer near the lower channel boundary.

In this paper, we investigate the error estimates of mixed finite element methods for optimal control problems governed by general elliptic equations. The state and co-state are approximated by the lowest order Raviart-Thomas mixed finite element spaces and the control variable is approximated by piecewise constant functions. We derive L2 and H–1-error estimates both for the control variable and the state variables. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the theoretical results.

We consider inviscid, incompressible shear flows with variable density and variable cross section. For this problem, we derived a new estimate for the growth rate of an unstable mode and a parabolic instability region which intersects semiellipse instability region under some condition.

In this paper, we consider the numerical method that is proposed and analyzed in [J. Cao and C. Xu, J. Comput. Phys., 238 (2013), pp. 154–168] for the fractional ordinary differential equations. It is based on the so-called block-by-block approach, which is a common method for the integral equations. We extend the technique to solve the nonlinear system of fractional ordinary differential equations (FODEs) and present a general technique to construct high order schemes for the numerical solution of the nonlinear coupled system of fractional ordinary differential equations (FODEs). By using the present method, we are able to construct a high order schema for nonlinear system of FODEs of the order α, α>0. The stability and convergence of the schema is rigorously established. Under the smoothness assumption f,g ∈ C 4[0,T], we prove that the numerical solution converges to the exact solution with order 3+α for 0<α≤1 and order 4 for α>1. Some numerical examples are provided to confirm the theoretical claims.

The Stokes axisymmetric flow of an incompressible viscous fluid past a micropolar fluid spheroid whose shape deviates slightly from that of a sphere is studied analytically. The boundary conditions used are the vanishing of the normal velocities, the continuity of the tangential velocities, continuity of shear stresses and spin-vorticity relation at the surface of the spheroid. The hydrodynamic drag force acting on the fluid spheroid is calculated. An exact solution of the problem is obtained to the first order in the small parameter characterizing the deformation. It is observed that due to increase spin parameter value, the drag coefficient decreases. Well known results are deduced and comparisons are made with classical viscous fluid and micropolar fluid.

Semi-Lagrangian (S-L) methods have no CFL stability constraint, and are more stable than the Eulerian methods. In the literature, the S-L method for the level-set re-initialization equation was complicated, which may be unnecessary. Since the re-initialization procedure is auxiliary, we propose to use the first-order S-L scheme coupled with a projection technique to improve the accuracy at the grid points just adjacent to the interface. Standard second-order S-L method is used for evolving the level-set convection equation. The implementation is simple, including on the block-structured adaptive mesh. The efficiency of the S-L method is demonstrated by extensive numerical examples including passive convection of interfaces with corners/kinks/large deformation under given velocity fields, a geometrical flow with topological changes, simulations of bubble/ droplet dynamics in incompressible two-phase flows. In terms of accuracy it is comparable to the other existing methods.

In this paper, we propose two new explicit multi-symplectic splitting methods for the nonlinear Dirac (NLD) equation. Based on its multi-symplectic formulation, the NLD equation is split into one linear multi-symplectic system and one nonlinear infinite Hamiltonian system. Then multi-symplectic Fourier pseudospectral method and multi-symplectic Preissmann scheme are employed to discretize the linear subproblem, respectively. And the nonlinear subsystem is solved by a symplectic scheme. Finally, a composition method is applied to obtain the final schemes for the NLD equation. We find that the two proposed schemes preserve the total symplecticity and can be solved explicitly. Numerical experiments are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Understanding blood flow in human body’s cerebral arterial system is of both fundamental and practical significance for prevention and treatment of vascular diseases. The mechanism and treatment for the growth of daughter aneurysm on its mother aneurysm are not yet fully understood. Themain purpose of the present paper is to elucidate the relationships between hemodynamics and the genesis, growth, subsequent rupture of the mother and daughter aneurysm on the cerebral vascular. The intensified stents with different porosities and structures are investigated to reduce the wall shear stress and pressure of mother and daughter aneurysm. The simulation is based on a lattice Boltzmann modeling of non-Newtonian blood flow. A novel stent structurewith “dense in front and sparse in rear” is proposed,which is verified to have good potential to reduce the wall shear stress of both mother and daughter aneurysm. In this paper, we present a superconvergence result for the bi-k degree time-space fully discontinuous finite element of first-order hyperbolic problems. Based on the element orthogonality analysis (EOA), we first obtain the optimal convergence order of discontinuous Galerkin finite element solution. Then we use orthogonality correction technique to prove a superconvergence result at right Radau points, which is higher one order than the optimal convergence rate. Finally, numerical results are presented to illustrate the theoretical analysis.

In this paper, we propose a new energy-preserving scheme and a new momentum-preserving scheme for the modified regularized long wave equation. The proposed schemes are designed by using the discrete variational derivative method and the finite volume element method. For comparison, we also propose a finite volume element scheme. The conservation properties of the proposed schemes are analyzed and we find that the energy-preserving scheme can precisely conserve the discrete total mass and total energy, the momentum-preserving scheme can precisely conserve the discrete total mass and total momentum, while the finite volume element scheme merely conserve the discrete total mass. We also analyze their linear stability property using the Von Neumann theory and find that the proposed schemes are unconditionally linear stable. Finally, we present some numerical examples to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

In this work, vortex convection is simulated using a dynamic mesh adaptation procedure. In each adaptation period, the mesh is refined in the regions where the phenomena evolve and is coarsened in the regions where the phenomena deviate since the last adaptation. A simple indicator of mesh adaptation that accounts for the solution progression is defined. The generation of dynamic adaptive meshes is based on multilevel refinement/coarsening. The efficiency and accuracy of the present procedure are validated by simulating vortex convection in a uniform flow. Two unsteady compressible turbulent flows involving blade-vortex interactions are investigated to demonstrate further the applicability of the procedure. Computed results agree well with the published experimental data or numerical results.

In this paper, a new combined method is presented to simulate saltwater intrusion problem. A splitting positive definite mixed element method is used to solve the water head equation, and a symmetric discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method is used to solve the concentration equation. The introduction of these two numerical methods not only makes the coefficient matrixes symmetric positive definite, but also does well with the discontinuous problem. The convergence of this method is considered and the optimal L2-norm error estimate is also derived.

Fluid-structure-interaction problems are ubiquitous, complicated, and not yet well understood. In this paper we investigate the interaction of a leading rigid circular cylinder and a trailing compliant filament and analyze the dynamic responses of the filament in the wake of the cylinder. It is revealed that there exist two flapping states of the filament depending on the cylinder-filament separation distance and the relevant critical distance distinguishing the two states is associated with the Reynolds number and the filament length. It is also found that the drag coefficient of the cylinder is reduced but that of the filament may be increased or decreased depending on its length. Compared with a single filament in a uniform flow, the filament of the same mechanical properties flapping in the wake of the cylinder has a lower frequency and a greater amplitude.

In this paper, a DG (Discontinuous Galerkin) method which has been widely employed in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is used to solve the two-dimensional time-domain Maxwell’s equations for complex geometries on unstructured mesh. The element interfaces on solid boundary are treated in both curved way and straight way. Numerical tests are performed for both benchmark problems and complex cases with varying orders on a series of grids, where the high-order convergence in accuracy can be observed. Both the curved and the straight solid boundary implementation can give accurate RCS (Radar Cross-Section) results with sufficiently small mesh size, but the curved solid boundary implementation can significantly improve the accuracy when using relatively large mesh size. More importantly, this CFD-based high-order DG method for the Maxwell’s equations is very suitable for complex geometries.

In this paper, we apply an a posteriori error control theory that we develop in a very recent paper to three families of the discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Reissner-Mindlin plate problem. We derive robust a posteriori error estimators for them and prove their reliability and efficiency.

In this paper, we apply the collocation methods to a class of Volterra integral functional equations with multiple proportional delays (VIFEMPDs). We shall present the existence, uniqueness and regularity properties of analytic solutions for this type of equations, and then analyze the convergence orders of the collocation solutions and give corresponding error estimates. The numerical results verify our theoretical analysis.

The nonlinear transverse vibrations of ordered and disordered two-dimensional (2D) two-span composite laminated plates are studied. Based on the von Karman's large deformation theory, the equations of motion of each-span composite laminated plate are formulated using Hamilton's principle, and the partial differential equations are discretized into nonlinear ordinary ones through the Galerkin's method. The primary resonance and 1/3 sub-harmonic resonance are investigated by using the method of multiple scales. The amplitude-frequency relations of the steady-state responses and their stability analyses in each kind of resonance are carried out. The effects of the disorder ratio and ply angle on the two different resonances are analyzed. From the numerical results, it can be concluded that disorder in the length of the two-span 2D composite laminated plate will cause the nonlinear vibration localization phenomenon, and with the increase of the disorder ratio, the vibration localization phenomenon will become more obvious. Moreover, the amplitude-frequency curves for both primary resonance and 1/3 sub-harmonic resonance obtained by the present analytical method are compared with those by the numerical integration, and satisfactory precision can be obtained for engineering applications and the results certify the correctness of the present approximately analytical solutions.

The nonlinear Dirac equation is an important model in quantum physics with a set of conservation laws and a multi-symplectic formulation. In this paper, we propose energy-preserving and multi-symplectic wavelet algorithms for this model. Meanwhile, we evidently improve the efficiency of these algorithms in computations via splitting technique and explicit strategy. Numerical experiments are conducted during long-term simulations to show the excellent performances of the proposed algorithms and verify our theoretical analysis.
