We show that systems with some specification properties are topologically or almost Borel universal, in the sense that any aperiodic subshift with lower entropy may be topologically or almost Borel embedded. This improves, with elementary tools, previous results of Quas and Soo [Ergodic universality of some topological dynamical systems. Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.368 (2016), 4137–4170].

We investigate factoriality, Connes' type III invariants and fullness of arbitrary amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras using Popa's deformation/rigidity theory. Among other things, we generalize many previous structural results on amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras and we obtain new examples of full amalgamated free product factors for which we can explicitely compute Connes' type III invariants.

$\mathbb{Z}^{d}$-extensions of probability-preserving dynamical systems are themselves dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure, and generalize random walks. Using the method of moments, we prove a generalized central limit theorem for additive functionals of the extension of integral zero, under spectral assumptions. As a corollary, we get the fact that Green–Kubo’s formula is invariant under induction. This allows us to relate the hitting probability of sites with the symmetrized potential kernel, giving an alternative proof and generalizing a theorem of Spitzer. Finally, this relation is used to improve, in turn, the assumptions of the generalized central limit theorem. Applications to Lorentz gases in finite horizon and to the geodesic flow on Abelian covers of compact manifolds of negative curvature are discussed.

We study a rich family of robustly non-hyperbolic transitive diffeomorphisms and we show that each ergodic measure is approached by hyperbolic sets in weak$\ast$-topology and in entropy. For hyperbolic ergodic measures, it is a classical result of A. Katok. The novelty here is to deal with non-hyperbolic ergodic measures. As a consequence, we obtain the continuity of topological entropy.

We study convergence of return- and hitting-time distributions of small sets $E_{k}$ with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}(E_{k})\rightarrow 0$ in recurrent ergodic dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$. Some properties which are easy in finite measure situations break down in this null-recurrent set-up. However, in the presence of a uniform set $Y$ with wandering rate regularly varying of index $1-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in (0,1]$, there is a scaling function suitable for all subsets of $Y$. In this case, we show that return distributions for the $E_{k}$ converge if and only if the corresponding hitting-time distributions do, and we derive an explicit relation between the two limit laws. Some consequences of this result are discussed. In particular, this leads to improved sufficient conditions for convergence to ${\mathcal{E}}^{1/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}{\mathcal{G}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$, where ${\mathcal{E}}$ and ${\mathcal{G}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$ are independent random variables, with ${\mathcal{E}}$ exponentially distributed and ${\mathcal{G}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$ following the one-sided stable law of order $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ (and ${\mathcal{G}}_{1}:=1$). The same principle also reveals the limit laws (different from the above) which occur at hyperbolic periodic points of prototypical null-recurrent interval maps. We also derive similar results for the barely recurrent $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=0$ case.

Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}:(X,T)\rightarrow (Y,S)$ be an extension between minimal systems; we consider its relative sensitivity. We obtain that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ is relatively $n$-sensitive if and only if the relative $n$-regionally proximal relation contains a point whose coordinates are distinct; and the structure of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ which is relatively $n$-sensitive but not relatively $(n+1)$-sensitive is determined. Let ${\mathcal{F}}_{t}$ be the families consisting of thick sets. We introduce notions of relative block ${\mathcal{F}}_{t}$-sensitivity and relatively strong ${\mathcal{F}}_{t}$-sensitivity. Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}:(X,T)\rightarrow (Y,S)$ be an extension between minimal systems. Then the following Auslander–Yorke type dichotomy theorems are obtained: (1) $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ is either relatively block ${\mathcal{F}}_{t}$-sensitive or $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}:(X,T)\rightarrow (X_{\text{eq}}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}},T_{\text{eq}})$ is a proximal extension where $(X_{\text{eq}}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}},T_{\text{eq}})\rightarrow (Y,S)$ is the maximal equicontinuous factor of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$. (2) $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ is either relatively strongly ${\mathcal{F}}_{t}$-sensitive or $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}:(X,T)\rightarrow (X_{d}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}},T_{d})$ is a proximal extension where $(X_{d}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}},T_{d})\rightarrow (Y,S)$ is the maximal distal factor of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$.

For an arbitrary discrete probability-measure-preserving groupoid $G$, we provide a characterization of property (T) for $G$ in terms of the groupoid von Neumann algebra $L(G)$. More generally, we obtain a characterization of relative property (T) for a subgroupoid $H\subset G$ in terms of the inclusions $L(H)\subset L(G)$.

We study the ergodic properties of a class of measures on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}^{\mathbb{Z}}$ for which $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{{\mathcal{A}},t}[x_{0}\cdots x_{n-1}]\approx e^{-nP}\Vert A_{x_{0}}\cdots A_{x_{n-1}}\Vert ^{t}$, where ${\mathcal{A}}=(A_{0},\ldots ,A_{M-1})$ is a collection of matrices. The measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{{\mathcal{A}},t}$ is called a matrix Gibbs state. In particular, we give a sufficient condition for a matrix Gibbs state to have the weak Bernoulli property. We employ a number of techniques to understand these measures, including a novel approach based on Perron–Frobenius theory. We find that when $t$ is an even integer the ergodic properties of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{{\mathcal{A}},t}$ are readily deduced from finite-dimensional Perron–Frobenius theory. We then consider an extension of this method to $t>0$ using operators on an infinite- dimensional space. Finally, we use a general result of Bradley to prove the main theorem.

In this paper we prove that the set of translation structures for which the corresponding vertical translation flows are disjoint with its inverse contains a $G_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}}$-dense subset in every non-hyperelliptic connected component of the moduli space ${\mathcal{M}}$. This is in contrast to hyperelliptic case, where for every translation structure the associated vertical flow is reversible, i.e., it is isomorphic to its inverse by an involution. To prove the main result, we study limits of the off-diagonal 3-joinings of special representations of vertical translation flows. Moreover, we construct a locally defined continuous embedding of the moduli space into the space of measure-preserving flows to obtain the $G_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}}$-condition. Moreover, as a by-product we get that in every non-hyperelliptic connected component of the moduli space there is a dense subset of translation structures whose vertical flow is reversible.

Let (Mt:t>0) be a Markov process of tessellations of ℝℓ, and let (𝒞t:t>0) be the process of their zero cells (zero polytopes), which has the same distribution as the corresponding process for Poisson hyperplane tessellations. In the present paper we describe the stationary zero cell process (at𝒞at:t∈ℝ),a>1, in terms of some regenerative structure and we show that it is a Bernoulli flow. An important application is to STIT tessellation processes.

For any measure-preserving system $(X,{\mathcal{B}},\unicode[STIX]{x1D707},T_{1},\ldots ,T_{d})$ with no commutativity assumptions on the transformations $T_{i},$$1\leq i\leq d,$ we study the pointwise convergence of multiple ergodic averages with iterates of different growth coming from a large class of sublinear functions. This class properly contains important subclasses of Hardy field functions of order zero and of Fejér functions, i.e., tempered functions of order zero. We show that the convergence of the single average, via an invariant property, implies the convergence of the multiple one. We also provide examples of sublinear functions which are, in general, bad for convergence on arbitrary systems, but good for uniquely ergodic systems. The case where the fastest function is linear is addressed as well, and we provide, in all the cases, an explicit formula of the limit function.

Although piecewise isometries (PWIs) are higher-dimensional generalizations of one-dimensional interval exchange transformations (IETs), their generic dynamical properties seem to be quite different. In this paper, we consider embeddings of IET dynamics into PWI with a view to better understanding their similarities and differences. We derive some necessary conditions for existence of such embeddings using combinatorial, topological and measure-theoretic properties of IETs. In particular, we prove that continuous embeddings of minimal 2-IETs into orientation-preserving PWIs are necessarily trivial and that any 3-PWI has at most one non-trivially continuously embedded minimal 3-IET with the same underlying permutation. Finally, we introduce a family of 4-PWIs, with an apparent abundance of invariant non-smooth fractal curves supporting IETs, that limit to a trivial embedding of an IET.

Let $X$ be a solenoid, i.e. a compact, finite-dimensional, connected abelian group with normalized Haar measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$, and let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}\rightarrow \operatorname{Aff}(X)$ be an action of a countable discrete group $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ by continuous affine transformations of $X$. We show that the probability measure preserving action $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}\curvearrowright (X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})$ does not have the spectral gap property if and only if there exists a $p_{\text{a}}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4})$-invariant proper subsolenoid $Y$ of $X$ such that the image of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ in $\operatorname{Aff}(X/Y)$ is a virtually solvable group, where $p_{\text{a}}:\operatorname{Aff}(X)\rightarrow \operatorname{Aut}(X)$ is the canonical projection. When $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ is finitely generated or when $X$ is the $a$-adic solenoid for an integer $a\geq 1$, the subsolenoid $Y$ can be chosen so that the image $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ in $\operatorname{Aff}(X/Y)$ is a virtually abelian group. In particular, an action $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}\curvearrowright (X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})$ by affine transformations on a solenoid $X$ has the spectral gap property if and only if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}\curvearrowright (X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})$ is strongly ergodic.

The results of Bergelson, Host and Kra, and Leibman state that a multiple polynomial correlation sequence can be decomposed into a sum of a nilsequence (a sequence defined by evaluating a continuous function along an orbit in a nilsystem) and a null sequence (a sequence that goes to zero in density). We refine their results by proving that the null sequence goes to zero in density along polynomials evaluated at primes and along the Hardy sequence $(\lfloor n^{c}\rfloor )$. In contrast, given a rigid sequence, we construct an example of a correlation whose null sequence does not go to zero in density along that rigid sequence. As a corollary of a lemma in the proof, the formula for the pointwise ergodic average along polynomials of primes in a nilsystem is also obtained.

We prove the stable ergodicity of an example of a volume-preserving, partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism introduced by Berger and Carrasco in [Berger and Carrasco. Non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms derived from the standard map. Comm. Math. Phys.329 (2014), 239–262]. This example is robustly non-uniformly hyperbolic, with a two-dimensional center; almost every point has both positive and negative Lyapunov exponents along the center direction and does not admit a dominated splitting of the center direction. The main novelty of our proof is that we do not use accessibility.

Abelian cellular automata (CAs) are CAs which are group endomorphisms of the full group shift when endowing the alphabet with an abelian group structure. A CA randomizes an initial probability measure if its iterated images have weak*-convergence towards the uniform Bernoulli measure (the Haar measure in this setting). We are interested in structural phenomena, i.e., randomization for a wide class of initial measures (under some mixing hypotheses). First, we prove that an abelian CA randomizes in Cesàro mean if and only if it has no soliton, i.e., a non-zero finite configuration whose time evolution remains bounded in space. This characterization generalizes previously known sufficient conditions for abelian CAs with scalar or commuting coefficients. Second, we exhibit examples of strong randomizers, i.e., abelian CAs randomizing in simple convergence; this is the first proof of this behaviour to our knowledge. We show, however, that no CA with commuting coefficients can be strongly randomizing. Finally, we show that some abelian CAs achieve partial randomization without being randomizing: the distribution of short finite words tends to the uniform distribution up to some threshold, but this convergence fails for larger words. Again this phenomenon cannot happen for abelian CAs with commuting coefficients.

We construct entropy increasing monotone factors in the context of a Bernoulli shift over the free group of rank at least two.

We consider divergent orbits of the group of diagonal matrices in the space of lattices in Euclidean space. We define two natural numerical invariants of such orbits: the discriminant—an integer—and the type—an integer vector. We then study the question of the limit distributional behavior of these orbits as the discriminant goes to infinity. Using entropy methods we prove that, for divergent orbits of a specific type, virtually any sequence of orbits equidistributes as the discriminant goes to infinity. Using measure rigidity for higher-rank diagonal actions, we complement this result and show that, in dimension three or higher, only very few of these divergent orbits can spend all of their life-span in a given compact set before they diverge.

We study the Furstenberg-entropy realization problem for stationary actions. It is shown that for finitely supported probability measures on free groups, any a priori possible entropy value can be realized as the entropy of an ergodic stationary action. This generalizes results of Bowen. The stationary actions we construct arise via invariant random subgroups (IRSs), based on ideas of Bowen and Kaimanovich. We provide a general framework for constructing a continuum of ergodic IRSs for a discrete group under some algebraic conditions, which gives a continuum of entropy values. Our tools apply, for example, for certain extensions of the group of finitely supported permutations and lamplighter groups, hence establishing full realization results for these groups. For the free group, we construct the IRSs via a geometric construction of subgroups, by describing their Schreier graphs. The analysis of the entropy of these spaces is obtained by studying the random walk on the appropriate Schreier graphs.

We consider the quasi-periodic Fermi–Ulam ping-pong model with no diophantine condition on the frequencies and show that typically the set of initial data which leads to escaping orbits has Lebesgue measure zero.
