This series includes pioneering editions of medieval historical accounts by eye-witnesses and contemporaries, collections of source materials such as charters and letters and works that applied new historiographical methods to the interpretation of the European middle ages. The nineteenth century saw an upsurge of interest in medieval manuscripts, texts and artefacts, and the enthusiastic efforts of scholars and antiquaries made a large body of material available in print for the first time. Although many of the analyses have been superseded, they provide fascinating evidence of the academic practices of their time, while a considerable number of texts have still not been re-edited and are still widely consulted.

  • Trained at the École Royale des Chartes at the Sorbonne, Paul Marchegay (1812–1885) dedicated his life to publishing the rich manuscript history found in the archives in his native Anjou. Volume 1 contains a collection of important texts by religious and lay authors written about the Angevin dynasty in its early years, dating from roughly the tenth to twelfth centuries. The most important manuscript printed in this collection is the Gesta Consulum Andegavorum. It is the only printed version of this manuscript, although modern scholars consider Marchegay's edition to be of poor quality. The collection also includes the only biography written about Geoffrey 'le bel' (Plantagenet), Count of Anjou, by Jean, a twelfth-century monk at Marmoutier. This book retains an interest for modern readers because it includes rare printed manuscripts, and also because descendants of the family, the Plantagenets, became the ruling monarchy in England.

  • The abbey of Landévennec, an important foundation dedicated to the Celtic saint Guénolé, was brought under the Benedictine rule by Louis the Pious in the ninth century. Its cartulary, compiled in the eleventh century, is an essential source for historians of medieval Brittany. The Latin charters were edited and published in 1886 by Réne-François-Laurent Le Men and Émile Ernault. Their preface provides a detailed description of the manuscript, including foliation, scripts, rubrication and an analysis of Breton personal and place names, whose changing orthography provides evidence for the development of the language over the centuries. The text includes a list of Landévennec's abbots, charters documenting the expansion of the abbey's holdings over the course of the tenth and eleventh centuries, and a list of the counts of Cornouaille. A complete index also provides translations of Breton terms into French.

  • Adolphus Ballard (1867–1915) was an English historian specialising in the medieval history of the borough. This volume, first published in 1913, was the first major examination of borough charters from the early medieval period. Ballard analyses an extensive collection of municipal documents and charters dating from before 1216 to understand the stages in the origin and development of boroughs, their mercantile and jurisdictional privileges and the relationship of burgage privileges and finances to those in other boroughs. The first half of the book discusses these topics in detail, with three supplementary essays concerning the essentials of the borough, its development as a legal entity, and comparisons with borough developments in other European countries which provide additional historical context. The second half gives the Latin text and English translations of the collection of documents analysed in the first part.

  • The Charters of Grenoble Cathedral are also commonly known as the Charters of St Hugues (1053–1132), who was consecrated bishop of the see in the late eleventh century and remained there until his death. In this 1869 work, the editor gives a thorough introduction to the history of the cathedral and to St Hugues' Charters. Marion discusses the controversial question of whether or not the second charter is authentic by examining the historical sources, and he demonstrates that out of the three charters, two can definitely be ascribed to St Hugues. Although the third charter was possibly begun in St Hugues' lifetime, it was probably completed by his successors. The first charter, probably written around 1130, describes the history of southern France and its inhabitants, and is followed by the much less accomplished second charter. The final charter shows signs of having been considerably re-edited.

The introduction is by Émile Mabille (1828–1874), a leading archivist in the manuscript department at the Bibliothèque National in Paris. The most important text in these volumes is the Gesta Consulum Andegavorum.   • M. R. James (1862–1936) is probably best remembered as a writer of chilling ghost stories, but he was an outstanding scholar of medieval literature and palaeography, who served both as Provost of King's College, Cambridge, and as Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, and many of his stories reflect his academic background. First published in 1930, this volume contains a guide to many historical places of interest in the counties of Suffolk and Norfolk. James concentrates mainly on the medieval history of these counties, weaving fascinating details of personalities and daily life with surviving examples of churches, monasteries and manors. In this tour around the two counties, the history of rich monastic foundations such as Bury St Edmunds and Norwich is discussed together with lesser-known historical sites in a clearly written and richly illustrated volume, which remains a valuable source for medieval scholars and historians.

  • First published in 1925 as part of the Cambridge Studies in Medieval Life and Thought series, Coulton's The Medieval Village was an expanded version of lectures given at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. Although a rigorous academic, who stressed the importance of using primary sources, Coulton was skilled at making medieval history accessible to a wider audience. He played an important role in encouraging interest in the study of social and economic, rather than political and military, history of the Middle Ages among younger scholars. In the present work, he used his extensive reading to discuss all aspects of peasant life throughout medieval Europe. He covers a wide range of topics, including the peasants' legal status and access to justice, their relationship with the Church, their landlords, and their work and aspects of daily life. The result is a fascinating picture of medieval life for the common man.

  • The Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy of Conques, located in the south-west of France, was a stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. A masterpiece of Romanesque art, it was constructed from the second half of the eleventh century, and completed around 1120. Today, the thoroughly restored church is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The abbey's cartulary, containing 548 charters and other documents written between 801 and 1180, was rediscovered and edited by French archivist and palaeographer Gustave Desjardins (1834–1902), and published in 1879. These original documents not only provide information relating to the history of the abbey, but also yield valuable facts about the customs, the institutions, and the status of properties between the ninth and twelfth centuries. This volume, which includes an introduction putting the cartulary into its historical context, remains an essential reference for medievalists.

  • This 1955 book is an expanded version of Pantin's 1948 Birkbeck Lectures on the English church in the fourteenth century. The period saw great changes, in part due to the Black Death and its consequences. The work is divided into three parts. In the first, Pantin examines social and political aspects of the church, such as the make up of the episcopacy, and the influence of the crown on church affairs. In the second he deals with the intellectual activities and culture of the church in a time of change and controversy, as university education became more common for priests and monks. The final section discusses the religious literature of the period, for both clergy and laity, and the growth of the mystical tradition in England. The result is a scholarly but accessible account of the church at a time of rapid change.

  • The Cartulaire de l'Abbaye de Noyers, first edited in 1872, remains a vital source for the political, economic and cultural history of this important Benedictine foundation in Anjou. Its 661 charters, ranging in date from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries, attest to numerous central events in the life of the abbey, including its foundation and the election of its abbots. They also provide a wealth of information concerning the foundation's properties and possessions, its benefactors and its tenants. Each charter is carefully annotated to reflect differences among the extant evidence, and two full indices of personal and geographic names aid in searching. Appended here as well is a short life of St Gratian. This reissued edition makes this valuable resource once again widely available to scholars of medieval monastic and political history.

  • John Horace Round (1854–1928) published Feudal England in 1895. The volume is a collection of Round's articles on feudalism, most of which had been previously published in the English Historical Review. The essays cover the period 1050–1200. They are linked by Round's overarching argument that it was the Norman Conquest that transplanted feudalism to England and that during the Anglo-Saxon period England had no real feudal institutions. The volume includes Round's groundbreaking article 'The Introduction of Knight Service into England', first published in the English Historical Review for 1891–1892; a number of his important essays on the Domesday Book, a topic on which he was long regarded as the leading expert; and several essays challenging the historical methods of Professor Freeman, the main opponent of Round's ideas. Feudal England was highly influential in medieval scholarship, and is still an important resource for researchers.

A Formula Book of English Official Historical Documents

  • This 1908 work supplements Hall's Studies in English Official Historical Documents. It gives examples of a wide range of English diplomatic documents from the seventh to the nineteenth centuries. These are arranged according to type and purpose, the majority in Latin, but others in French or English. The intention is to assist the user of such archival materials, by familiarising them with the format and language used in each kind of document, and explaining why and how they were written. The 211 transcriptions were made by palaeography students at the London School of Economics, and classified and edited with extensive notes by Mr Hall. They are not literal transcriptions, as contractions have been expanded, and the punctuation and capitalisation modernised. To save space, standard formulas have not been repeated each time. Despite the lack of any illustrations of originals, the book filled a need long felt by students of history.

  • For this 1916 work, Archdeacon E. H. Pearce searched through the extensive muniments of Westminster Abbey to provide a list of all the known members of the monastic community until the Dissolution. Over 700 individuals are included, with all the information about them available to the author. While the list is not complete, and the use of other sources would add additional names for the early period, Pearce completed a remarkable achievement. Westminster was a substantial foundation, with an average community of 47 for the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. About half of these, who held some office or function, are naturally better documented than ordinary monks. Scholarship was evidently valued by the abbey, although the majority of the writings evidenced were on the history of the community rather than theological or literary works. Some monks were supported at Oxford, but little is known of the education offered to the remainder.
